Just do stuff other than play video and watch anime. Don't cut these things out completely, that's not fair to yourself. Instead, set aside a small amount of time every day to work on your game. Every week increase that block of time by an hour until you're up to 4-6 hours a day.

That way you only have to have the will power to stop your game/anime for an hour at first, then slowly work your way up.

This doesn't bother me for political correctness 'muh diversity' reasons, it just bugs me from an actual aesthetic diversity standpoint when every human in a vast fictional world has the same skin color.

Same reason I hate when games set in fantasy worlds with tons of non-human races somehow end up with all-human (or human analogous) playable casts 90% of the time.

An entire cast of ambiguously eurasian young adults who all happen to be immaculately beautiful just isn't visually or thematically interesting.

That's partly my beef.

Tons of RPGs have huge fantasy worlds but the whole party ends up being just attractive anime teens anyways, ignoring the fact that a way more mixed cast would be not only more interesting, but more thematically fitting as well.

I get that the main character and love interest at least need to be human so players can relate to them, but it is a missed opportunity when you've created an RPG world that already incorporates lizardmen or goblins or whatever other non-human races with apparent intelligence and they all get relegated to plot-unimportant NPCs.

Stuff like Final Fantasy XII and Star Ocean immediately come to mind as being games that show monsterfolk and alien races (that aren't just space elves) existing alongside humans, yet leave them mostly ignored even when it comes to villains.

Not really a dealbreaker or anything, I just really appreciate when an RPG has a visually diverse cast of characters.

Well you're using a side-view perspective instead of the traditional Three-Quarters view.

3 frame walk cycles, IMO, don't work well with larger sprite styles either.

Increasing the walking frames is easily accomplished with plug-in.

Never localized but there's a translation patch if you feel like piratin'.
It's pretty much a straight upgrade of the original and retains basically everything so I highly recommend it if FFL2 was your jam.

I don't feel like that's quite the spirit of it. The original "but thou must" allows the player to *refuse*, but then that line comes up and you're booted back to the choice. This example allows for varying flavours of yes, but it doesn't pretend that you have the option not to do it - it's more an attempt to let you angle an existing personality a bit rather than trying to let you make your own.

99% of RPGs are pretty flimsy plotwise so I don't think that's an inherent problem with having diverse characters. Even beloved franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest almost exclusively have 'excuse' plots, so it's not going to make it any worse if you make some character designs interesting.

Of course if you have what you think is a good, serious story that would be compromised if you shoehorned in a bunch of magic shotas or a brother who keep chickens in his afro, there's obviously no need for diversity for the sake of diversity.

But in non-grimdark high fantasy it can't hurt to pile on the wacky shit if you feel so inclined. Or to be Yoko Taro and mix your grimdark with wacky shit anyways.

Do increased frame plug-ins cause problems with other types of animations? For example, would that trick of rotating and using steps to create a "dance" sequence that some guy was trying to do two threads ago work with plug ins for 5 frame steps? I ask because I will need that sort of trick to make lewd scenes.

Also note that I am making that game mostly because I'd like to "have a game under my belt" in order to approach more competent artists to make future games, so I am ok with the frame rate looking a little bit off for the sake of cutting on production time, as long as it is good enough to attract some 200 or so blog followers once I release the game for free.

Got about 600 views thus far. Overall between everything I've had around 1000 impressions. Not terrible but I'm hoping for more. I have like six months of straight dev time to gradually build up interest. Eventually a beefed up version of the demo will be released. Going to be putting it in Greenlight hopefully before it shuts down.

Any advice on getting more of a word out there? The people who see it generally enjoy it, so I think I'm doing okay so far.

The entire world is about 19% black. Unless your game adequately explains it, I'm gonna have questions if your game takes place on earth or has a very similar setting and has a 40% black population.
The inverse applies as well, if a setting gives me adequate reason to believe there wouldn't be terribly many white people I'll notice the whitewashing.

i'd say you want around half an hour to an hour of solid gameplay and storytelling for a demo. too little gameplay and too much story in your demo will feel like it has no narrative substance, while the flipside will feel empty and pointless.

to give a solid answer varies game by game, but if you're doing traditional "story, dungeon, story, dungeon" style, I'd recommend waiting until a few dungeons in + story before you start considering a demo. this will give you time to get into a flow for the game, iron out awkward bits that tend to happen with new projects, and get presentation work started. plus if you (like many people) get sick of your project and drop it at some point (99% chance you will like everyone else) then you're not bound and committed to a project you don't want to continue with no demo floating around.

Same. When I don't work on my project directly, I think about it all the time. I think it's pretty normal reaction for things one's very invested in, especially if the thing in question requires creativity.

Anyway, if your dedication to the project doesn't make you neglect other things or overwork yourself, then you're completely fine. It can even let you stay motivated to finish your project if only because of the sheer time you've invested into it, even outside the Maker.

Not really, no. I'd imagine you could do them somewhat easily with the .psds though.

I feel you buddy. I'm the same way. I have no friends and barely any family left and my life feels like an ever-increasingly gloomy grind of work, eat, sleep.

But I love vidya and I don't want to leave this world without making a reasonably rad video game. I think about making games all the time and it helps me ignore the dread, loneliness and anxiety hanging over my head when I get to tinker around in a world of my own creation.

Hell, even if I make a shitty video game at least I'll still have created something more than the average person can say, and I'll have had fun doing it. Maybe if it's shitty enough, I can even make the people who play it feel just as awful as me. That'd be artsy.

You have to cling onto your love of video games and make that your reason to wake up early in the morning. Don't let the horror of dying alone sink in, tell yourself it doesn't bother you and just think about your video game. It's easy to lose motivation but sometimes if you can force yourself to start working anyways you'll tunnel vision into doing a bunch of shit. Think about how cool it is to create something of your very own, but take it at a reasonable pace at the same time. While being lethargic about it isn't good, there's also no rush to finish a game as soon as humanly possible.

If you feel talentless, work to improve yourself in your spare time, but at the same time you can't give into a perfectionist mindset. You can always revise things at a later date, but having something finished sooner will always be better than having something perfect "later" (never).

If you're like me, having no friends gives you a ton of free time, I practice drawing and coding whenever I have the energy, and even though I'm still a talentless artist even the tiniest improvements are progress. Putting your ideas into practice isn't easy, but nothing worth achieving ever was, so please hold on to your dream of making video games and don't second-guess yourself.

I understand your thinking, I've been there before frequently. This is the curse of being a self-aware, relatively intelligent, conscious living thing. You know that you are temporary and there isn't much you can do to control that. You don't and probably won't ever know what happens (if anything) after you cease to be.

There is no answer. For people like us this is terrifying and frustrating. But there is hope.

Through the loss of many people I love dearly over my life, I've come to realize that death is permanent and irreversible. The dead cannot right the wrongs they have done, they cannot love anymore, they cannot impact the world at all. The dead will never see you ever again, they can never spend time with you. This is important because it brings immediate attention to the fact that you are alive right fucking now! You are not dead yet! The dead have no tomorrow but you (probably) do. You can pretty much do whatever you want to do. If the dead were around us in spirit, they would be clawing at you with jealousy for your ability to just be alive. Just taking a shower, having a conversation. These are all things you only have a temporary ability to do. The worst thing you can do in life is waste time doing things that you do not enjoy.

I have spoken to a handful of dying people before and only one of them faced their death with full acceptance. That person was exceptional and lived in the moment every single day of their lives. They lived in the moment most all moments available to them. This is an exception, most people die full of regret. They realize all too late that this wasn't some test run, this was the only life they have. It's sad but true, most don't fully understand that they aren't immortal once they are dying. Don't be like that. Recognize that your short life is yours to do whatever the fuck you want with. Enjoy the fuck out of it.

I think you need to spend some time alone. Let your ego die, because an ego is only used to distinguish you in society. You can take that mask off when you're alone (or anonymous online). Then you'll realize it doesn't matter what you do in life because life isn't a story book and you're not meant to do anything. You can put on any mask. You're just the coalescing of circumstances. A fluctuating pattern. And the only comfort in that is that a possibly infinite universe with limited quantum states means a pattern such as yourself is bound to repeat infinitely. All possible permutations that can exist, will exist. Maybe even do exist, if you want to consider higher dimensions that incorporates all of space and time.

Which version of RPG Maker has the most free/complete tilesets available and which look the best?

The only reason I want to use RPG Maker is so I can make maps for Roll20. Specifically I'm looking for tilesets that are strictly top down only, not the usual RPG Maker fair where you can see the walls for 2-3 tiles and such since that will just not look that well in a Tabletop setting.

I was thinking MV simply because of the higher resolution tilesets looking better when I upscale them, but I think it still may be too early for that many tilesets to be available. Would Ace be a better choice?

More than thinking about nonexistence after death, I hurt my brain when I stay up at night wondering what existed before the universe. If nothing existed beforehand, how did the universe come into being? Even if we go by the created by an intelligent designer cop-out, where did that God or Gods come from? Even if a magic man made THIS universe that still, where did the magic man come from? And if he, or an infinite system of universes 'always' existed, how could that eternity possibly arise even if it 'always' existed?

By all means everything should be infinite nothingness all the way down, man. Not even an empty void, cuz' that'd BE something.

Just like one day we'll all return to complete nonexistence, the universe itself will eventually succumb to entropy and cease to exist as we know it. What is left when all matter and space is destroyed? Surely some kind of material our minds couldn't possibly comprehend 'exists' beyond nonexistence and beyond our concept of things needing a starting point.

Also if the incomprehensible-to-humans conditions were met for ONE god to arise, logically it stands to reason there should be multiple or even infinite gods with their own personal universes. Or perhaps even multiple gods with multiple universes each. If God is omnipotent, why would he/she/it/they stop at just one universe? If a God truly exists it obviously has a non-intervention policy at this point, probably made a cooler universe somewhere else.

Or maybe they didn't even make this universe from scratch. Look at all those trillions of pointless planets and empty space. Maybe he was just using the RPG Maker equivalent of world-crafting tools, generated a giant map and got bored after filling one planet.

He's probably left us alone because he can't motivate himself to keep working on his game because he's depressed nobody wants to play things that use the faceset randomizer, and his artistic skills aren't up to par. And if he's the Abrahamic God then he's probably cringing that he ever used an Author Avatar self-insert as a plot-important mary sue.

Well you definitely jumped to a lot of conclusions.

The point is life is purposeful and each person has their own purpose. You might not know it now and it might not come for a long time, but it exists.

The best thing you can do is find appreciation for life and the things you do have. Everything you can see and have access to, praise and be grateful for. I'm not talking about the SJW "privilege" I'm talking about feeling appreciative for what you have and let that be the guiding virtue in life. Wonderful things follow that mindset and healing comes quickly.

Although perhaps on some scale that's sort of true. Efficient patterns reappear in nature through convergent evolution, like how Octopi evolved specialized eyeballs independently from other animals, or how the 'fish' shape consistently reappears (Icythosaurs, Dolphin ,Whales, and Penguins are probably a few million years away from assuming a similar form).

If neckbeards making RPGs is for some reason an ergonomic form to take under certain environments, then perhaps there is a planet out there somewhere in the cosmos exactly like this one. Except where we've finished all of our games.
