Don't give up. It sounds like you have a lot to learn about the game.

It's ok some of us have been there before.

Here's some basic questions. First of all are your resists capped? Resists should be your number one focus in gear, above life or energy shield. A good metric is to get them capped before act 3 piety on each difficulty.

Second of all what's your range? Melee characters have a lot more defensive needs than ranged characters.

When you create a new character it says next to breach/legacy etc "THIS IS THE DEFAULT LEAGUE."

So they've already kind of indicated that they don't want new players on standard.

Now that ssf is a thing what if they made standard ssf only.

It's actually not that hard. 1-2 efficient training jewels, in addition to Brawn jewels, which you'd eventually want to replace with Emperors, and lots of strength gear and passive nodes.
