About that...

It's possible she wanted to keep her identity secret to not cause a panic among the group. After all, the only ones who knew her identity were the people who saw her motive video, Hoshi and Ouma. It's more likely her strategy was to connect with as little people as possible, but Tsumugi put a stop to that by giving out the videos.

Also, the whole "pushing Hoshi to depression" were Ouma's words, and given he's a liar who hates killers, should be taken with a grain of salt. It's possible Maki just gave the motive video in exchange for Hoshi's silence, and it's possible she never actually did see the video herself.

The thing about Chapter 2 is that it doesn't show us the whole truth of what happened, and the two major sources of information had vested interests, so it's not wholly reliable.

I actually doubt that if only because Gonta wanted to sacrifice himself to defeat the Exisals but he certainly couldn't do so using his strength alone.

Of course, the people who say that Maki planned for Hoshi to die are missing an important point: How could she know for sure that Hoshi would react exactly the way she wants him to react?

Maki is not someone who leaves things up to chance. If she wants someone dead, she has to make absolutely sure he is dead. However, this is a game where killing people marks you for death unless you can convince otherwise, and Maki can't lie well enough. It's also possible she didn't want to kill someone just because he knew her talent. As soon as Hoshi revealed he had her motive video and knew her talent, she realized that hiding it might be impossible as there might be multiple copies of her motive video released to others. Her best bet would be to trade his motive video for his silence in order to prevent the situation from worsening. She probably thought she had no choice in the matter but to hope that he kept his word.

Agreed. To be honest I just disliked her so much before this, and keeping an open mind was what allowed me to get over my biases and listen to other anons like you talk about other more controversial characters such as Miu which ended up making me like them so much more in the end.

Certainly it seems more like she had little choice as a running theme of Maki's character is how unhealthily bound she was to her career as an assassin and also her desire to protect her orphanage, since she actually does like children and would rather not kill. Kaito was the start of perhaps the first healthy relationship she ever had of her own accord, so it's heart-breaking he had to die to set her free.

One of Maki's themes is about choice and how it affects her. During her training, she never had much of a choice in anything.

Besides the situation in Chapter 2, there's also Chapter 5, which was about the whole thing with her trying to kill Ouma. While it's still her fault, because it was her choice that she decided to kill Ouma, her choice were due to lack of information from Ouma, who absolutely no one wanted to cooperate with after the shit he pulled in Chapter 4, false information from Tsumugi, who deliberately set it up to get the game rolling again, and her own upbringing. So the blame can be laid on Ouma, Tsumugi, her trainers, and herself.

That came back to bite her in the ass horribly, and she regretted it. She might have realized that Kaito might have actually killed Ouma, or she herself might have killed Kaito, which is why she was the main opposition during the trial: she didn't want them to find out the truth she was denying herself. Of course, she didn't know the mastermind didn't know what happened either.

What's worse is that if she gave up and allowed herself to be executed, it would all be for NOTHING, as Kaito did it to protect Maki, knowing he would die instead, but probably realizing he didn't have much time to live. It's really sad that Kaito had to die to make her truly grow out of her mindset, but I think that's what Kodaka intended: sometimes, there is no easy way to learn. Just look at Kaede and Shuichi, and Tenko and Himiko.

Not that I like it, but that might be what he was going for.

Also, if we assume Ouma knew in advance that Maki would go after his ass and he was going to escape anyway, he likely roped Kaito in well before he got shot by her poison arrow by coming up with an absolutely crazy plan which also involved Kaito getting shot. Why so? Maki certainly wasn't going to learn much from Ouma even after he asked her if she really liked killing so much that she'd start up the game again, but she definitely regretted it when she tried to shoot him again and Kaito jumped in the way instead.

It's certainly suspicious that Kaito told Saihara he could reach the truth before his confrontation with Ouma happened, and I think he and Ouma actually talked about something while they were locked up. Maki being a survivor would have meant nothing if she hadn't learned her lesson after indirectly getting Kaito executed and if she hadn't offered herself up as a sacrifice thus making Saihara reject both hope and despair, so I wonder if there's more awesome in chapter 5 than what we've even seen in the game itself.

Now I kind of wonder if anyone can persuade me that Shirogane is a good character. Maki's kind of boring still but her arc is nicely written.

I don't think Ouma planned for that in advance. If he did rope in Kaito, Kaito wouldn't have asked Himiko to supply him a crossbow to threaten and shoot Ouma with. Ouma never expected that Tsumugi would have a way to counter his plan without getting her own hands dirty. He probably expected her to retaliate by attacking Ouma himself, but he couldn't have known that the Remembering Lights could be manufactured, and she could get Maki to be a proxy.

This doesn't detract Ouma's awesomeness though, since he must have realized that Maki and the rest were manipulated somehow, since they didn't act before, and he prepared a script the size of a phonebook while heavily injured and poisoned. His talent is all about prediction of future events, but his main problem is his inability to consider everything about the present and his high amount of distrust, which is why Chapters 4 and 5 went the way it did.

His ability, to put it simply, is best visualized as playing chess. Within the game, he can see future moves and make the best moves based on how his opponents would react to them, making the ones with the least risk. However, he's so focused on the game that he can't see what happens outside the game (Gonta putting the wires wrong/Tsumugi and the Remembering Light) and his distrust makes him take blunders that, while seemingly harmless, turns out to be extremely damaging for him(his plan to get Miu killed/his plan to end the killing game). He had a much simpler solution (just talking about what happened outside/Miu's trap and why the should deal with her first) but his innate distrust and despair from finding out about the world outside drove him to take more extreme and risky actions, and that doomed him.

I'll probably think of Tsumugi as more of an opportunist than a planner, who desires the limelight. She's the type of person who, whenever she sees a chance to either continue Danganronpa or a chance for herself to shine, she'll take it.

This does depend on whether he already knew whether Shirogane's a copycat or not, since he does tell you in his FTE that he won't reveal his backstory because he'd get into trouble if someone copies him.

Also, a lot of people who don't read such stories might not realize it but having the ability to see the future doesn't make it easy as pie to change the 'script', especially when Shirogane has Remembering Lights in her arsenal to re-write the script back to how it was supposed to be done.

Because Ouma and Gonta were mentioned to have spent time in chapter 3 I honestly doubt that he never noticed Gonta being left-handed since he was sharp enough to see that Amami's Monopad must be special even after everyone else gave up on it, and the existence of the Monocubs also meant there was no way Ouma could fully retaliate until they were all gone, so his villain act in chapter 4 and chapter 5 could have been intentionally done to trick Shirogane into thinking everything's going to plan, only to crash her hopes and dreams because in the end she's just an empty person who thinks she can make people into puppets.

The most important thing we're lacking is we don't know what Ouma's true talent is, but I'm pretty positive it's something that's based on analysis and also allows him to see through lies.

Now that I thought about it, Tsumugi is certainly interesting in a way.

Tsumugi is all about opportunity. If Ouma is the planner, than Tsumugi is the one who excels at opportunities. From her FTEs, she herself says she's the type of person who is invisible. She even says that she doesn't really like cosplaying in general.

And that may actually be the truth, in a sense.

She has a very special talent, for not just cosplaying fictional characters, but IMITATING them to the point that she can even change her height, voice and width to match them. So why does she not like it?

Simple. She wants to be known as Tsumugi Shirogane. That is, she wants to bask in the limelight as herself.

That is why she takes great offense at Rantaro painting Kaede's nails - he stole her thunder.

This is where her opportunist nature comes into play. Whenever she finds a chance to be given attention, she takes it. Her "conversion" in Chapter 3 and her attempts to "seduce" Saihara in Chapter 4 are great examples of this.

The thing is, she's not dangerous because of that. She's dangerous because she can use her nature to take out dangerous people.

That is why when Kaede states that no one will kill each other, she takes the opportunity to add the two-day rule. And when Amani and Kaede set up their plans to take out the mastermind, she uses their plans to craft her own, so that even if Kaede missed, Amani would still be killed.

Chapter 2's motive video scramble was planned to ensure Maki's video ended up in the hands of someone else. Even if that plan failed, she could still fall back on Kirumi's.

In Chapter 4, when Gonta revealed he didn't know about the murder, she mostly liked realized that she can use it as an opportunity to take out Ouma, who was getting too dangerous to live. This is why she decided to side with Kaito. Even though she failed in the end, no one noticed it.
