Zealot's oath makes your regen apply to your energy shield. Regen is always active.

For instance, if you had a stone golem you would always have an extra 100 energy/sec regen on your shield active at all times the stone golem was up.

Recharge is when it comes back fast after a delay, and is a separate mechanic.

You can make almost everything work and your first build will be shit no matter what, just experiment and look for skills you like and how you support them. As a general rule melee is weak, ranged is strong, summoning is easy mode.

You are going to have to rely on a defensive mechanic. Depending on what you're playing it can be Energy Shield, Life, or Evasion.

Life needs significantly more nodes to be worthwile, and you're probably using other defenses, typically armor, while you're at it. Don't go crazy looking for damage as a marauder/duelist/ranger. Make sure you have +150% life in your base build at absolute minimum. You're going to end up replacing all of that when you start geting oneshot in the endgame, but if you have a base it can still be handled somehow.

ES is currently and forever completely broken and capable of entirely replacing Life. All the nodes for it are at Shadow and Witch though.

Evasion can be strong but typically needs Life to supplement it.
