I'm a scrub new to FGs. Tried out sfv but didn't like it too much, want to get into the older sf games and the KoFs.

Don't jump in with j.short/lk, it has awful range. It's extremely active for a long time like j.lp though, and is good if they have no more health and you want an almost certain trade for the win

Fireball more, it's ryu's best tool. You're gonna want to try to learn how to zone better, don't just chuck fireballs brainlessly you can alter the timing, fake out when you're going to throw fireballs/feint with jab or stand short so they hop right into a fireball or if you're close enough, dp their jump-in. practice the dp motion if it gives you trouble. try to dp with jab dp/LP dp more often, it is a little less risky. Try to stay on the ground a little more, you often backed up a ton by jumping backward to avoid their potential pokes, which is a good instinct, but try to not back up that far, just walk back past the reach of their normals/pokes so you can stay in a safe zone without losing much space. Eventually you should try to walk/pressure them into a corner and fireball trap them which is supposed to be ryu's end-game and ideal scenario, but not all matches play out like that. I fought you a little bit yesterday, you're not too bad you just need to play more and get the hang of things

What's the best tool for jump ins instead of j.lk?

DP isn't that much of a problem, sometimes I fuck it up because I bought a stick from someone with a circle gate and it was hard to DP so now that I installed a square it's a little different. I'm pretty good with the motion and can pull it off 8/10 times, but my stick is a seimitsu so it's a bit more sensitive and less forgiving than a jlf from what I've read.

How do I learn the neutral/footsies? Like feinting and faking out my opponent. Seems in high level vids it's an elaborate dance but I don't have the faintest idea how to do footsies.

Feel good that you said I'm not too bad, appreciate it, especially since I have like... probably less than 25 hours in FGs cumulatively.

What are your thoughts on sfv? /r/kappa says it's awful but I really like karin as a character. I played some a3 in mame though to see what it was about and was disappointed they got rid of her dp+p.

Some advice I can give based on the set we had would be to stop playing ST like it is SFV in regards to jump-ins. Jump-ins are really floatly and televised, whereas walk-speed is really quick in ST, so I would use walking more for approaching. Another bit of advice is to learn more combos. There was some wiffed fierce DPs that could've been punished a lot better. I am a huge fan of Ryu's crMK into hadoken in ST, it is so basic but so good. Also as you said having better AAs is always going to be important. Basically, you just need to play more and learn from experience. GGs and thanks for the games.

I never played sfv besides buying it on sale when it was on steam and dicking around with karin in training mode so I wouldn't know about the jump ins of sfv. I played some sf2 on snes for a couple hours with my brothers and some sf4ae at a friend's house but that's my experience with the genre other than some arcade mode in mame in a couple games (kof and sfa) just to dick around, without knowing anything. But I've been reading some guides and practicing ST against the cpu and decided to take it online.

I am not even a good player so I wouldn't put too much weight in my advice.

I try to keep combos very simple and limited in ST because the execution of the game is kind of stiff. Basically I would just try to go for medium normal (either punch or kick, standing or crouching depending on character and other factors), into special move. When you are a Ryu and you are punishing a big whiff like a fierce DP, I would start with a standing neutral into fierce DP, because standing neutral into DP is a bit easier to input than crouch normal into DP, and fierce DP instead of fireball because extra damage. I think fierce DP and roundhouse tatsu do roughly the same damage, and can be combod into the same way.

I am pretty sure i was using DPs wrong in our match. The use-case for Ryu's fierce DP is either anti-airs, or using when you are extra close to the opponent. I am not 100% certain the ideal use-case for the medium shoryuken.

Because charge moves and combos are easy as fuck and most charge characters are unga by design, see Balrog and Urien (the latter is only slightly less unga than Balrog). Their gameplay style also tends to be very gimmicky.

The only charge character in SFV that is not low IQ is Fang even when his gameplay style is very spammy as well. Chun is also somewhat "demanding" in S2.

Anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter, KoF and MK have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" rage art moves are just laughably broken. Instead of a supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T7 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their rage move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, slow motion over and over again also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!

If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, might.
