Guard Up is better anyway because Second Chance counts as a continue. Lots of higher-level quests have a no continue challenge, and Proud Mode doesn't allow continues at all (pretty sure Second Chance is disabled)

If you go into a second turn, it's better to get a DEF boost and survive the attack than maybe possibly come back from the dead.

Second Chance does not count as a continue. Not sure if proud mode stops it from activating because I don't have anything with the skill to test it out but if you use second chance in a quest with a "without continue" objective you'll still get the objective as long as you don't pay jews for a revive.
