Let's see if we can get a nice Poker general going, mainly online as this is /vg/ but all formats welcome.
Post hands histories, questions, strategy, what you are playing, your history of playing?

How do I get into poker? It seems very interesting to me. The strategies, the bluffs, etc.
>>
>>169871461
Loads of ways to get into poker, maybe get a book like "harrington on holdem" though that assumes you at least know the rules, the rules are simple anyway.
You can play online in nearly all countries, so once learnt the rules maybe try the lowest stake games, after a point it's best to stick to a certain format, like cash games or tournaments. There are so many complexities to poker it'd be hard to explain it all now but I'd be happy to answer any questions.

What's the best online poker game that's not Facebook/P2W tier, OP? I also enjoy Blackjack

The one in your post looks kinda nice

As in the best site?
Pokerstars is the biggest, most games below highstakes run 24/7. Other sites have an easier pool of players though like any poker site thats with a bookmaker i.e bet365 poker, williamhill poker..
888 is also pretty popular.

Cool thanks will check a few out.

Any sites that pay out real money if you get lucky? Or does that kind of online gambling not exist
>>
>>169873152
I'm slightly confused by your question. Online poker (unless play money) is played with and for real money. It's debatebly a form of gambling, though not against the house so you can profit from it.

Sorry I'm just used to playing Facebook poker where they allot you like 5K chips for you to squander - I am looking to up the ante by playing with real cash, any tips for a beginner?
>>

I guess I should mention if you live in US the online poker situation isn't great there , if you live in NJ you can play on pokerstars with other people from NJ. Elsewhere in US though the best option is probably Americas Card Room.
Yeah my biggest tip is play small pots with small hands and big pots with big hands, at the lowest stakes people kinda get attatched to shit hands so if you are patient you can beat it fairly easily.
Also at first don't play too much like maybe 2 or 3 tables at once a few tournaments or <1000 hands a day. the mental game in poker, like remaining emotionless, is a hugely underestimated thing by new players, the more you play the less ridiculous bad beats effect you.

Excellent thanks man.

From Australia so should be all good - just would like to practise on the computer before heading out the tables, is there any correlation between online poker and the casinos irl in your opinion?
>>
>>169874184
Online plays a lot faster, but there is a lot less information to go off of. Reading people in real life and interacting make it quite a bit different, where online gets to be more about math and speed, playing as many hands as possible and getting ahead by percentage. Real life can be more of a gut feeling kind of thing that some players really excel at (not that the math and everything else isn't still relevant)

But yeah I would get a shitton of online practice in and maybe read a book or watch a ton of videos on youtube before jumping into a casino. The seasoned casino players will probably fuck your shit up regardless your first time unless you are really lucky, but I would build a solid knowledge base before going in for your first time. It is fun as hell playing in a fancy ass casino for some decent money against good people though. Nothing like it, can't get that feeling online.

But yes online play will help you in the casinos if that is what you were wondering specifically. Its all poker, and the more things you see the better you will be. Just keep in mind you will be playing against people who have played tens to hundreds of thousands of hours so don't take it lightly. If you want to be any good you need to live and breathe poker, otherwise you'll just be donating to the people that know what they're doing.

Yeah live poker is easier, but there are pros and cons to both. I'm a cash game player so will just comment on that.
Live pros:
Players are way worse, lowest stake casino's offer is usually $1/$2 (called 200nl online) which usually translates to about 10nl (5c/10c) skill level online on average but you do get complete donkeys playing spewing chips all over, but generaly if you can beat 10nl online you can beat live 200nl..
No one has HUDs in live (online programs that tell a player stats on another player, allowed on most sites)
Live cons:
Variance is high because you can only play one table and about 1 hand every 2-3 minutes
You can't autorefill your stack as easily as online (you want to have the maximum ammount of chips so that when you hit your hands you get the most value, there are short stackinh strats but yh..)
Also arguably harder to keep track of peoples stack sizes, who bet what etc..

Online pros:
Play anywhere anytime
Way quicker to improve online
More different stakes
Play more hands, more tables, less variance
Can use huds
Loads of tools to make things easier like autorefill stack, hotkeys, pot odds calculators.
Lower rake
Rakeback

Cons:
Tougher players
No live tells possible

Probably other stuff anyway.

Another live con is the loud fat guy that keeps ordering food.
