The inherent problem with Archie Sonic is that it started out being saddled with SatAM's cast and storyline, (which already wasn't that great or inspired) rather than utilizing the core cast (such as it was at the time) and working outward from there. When you get down to it, Archie Sonic's pretty much always been an official fan comic of a cartoon that's already taken a lot of liberties with Sonic's IP to begin with, and not many of them for the better.

Throw Penders into the mix and-- mama mia, that's a spicy shitball. Even with Flynn coming in and cleaning house, he's still working within an inherently flawed book. It's a shame he couldn't (or wouldn't) use the lawsuits to do a clean reboot so he could start fresh. ...What? Okay, yes-- alright--guys shut up-- of course, it's true that doing something completely original has its own pitfalls, especially when given to a fan fiction writer, but the more I look back on the first 150 issues, the more I'm convinced that being forced to work within the framework of SatAM is the real reason Archie Sonic had, and still has, so many problems. Penders just took an already shaky situation and escalated it into a crazed, enchilada-fueled, shitshow.

tl;dr I more or less agree. Dunno about a manga being much better though. Remember, the most notable thing the Japs gave us was Sonic X. Just saying.

Haven't played the Advances, so you've got me there.

In SA2 he was really only aggressive towards Rouge, and Eggman obviously, which makes sense because she stole the Master Emerald. He wasn't ever all that stoic in the game.

When I first played Heroes as a kid I didn't really like how they wrote Knuckles, but I've since come to like it. Especially with Shadow now filling the direct rival role for Sonic, Knuckles as the friend who gives him shit sometimes but still has his back works pretty well.

I sort of agree with you, but at the same time I don't.

Sticking to SatAM did hold a number of things back, but at the same time SatAM was arguably the most interesting version of Sonic yet. Did you expect the comics to just continually run with Sonic and Tails going on an Eggman adventure and have Knuckles pop up occasionally? A good portion of the SatAM characters made for nice dynamics, in particular at the time it was important for Sonic that the only person he talked to wasn't just Tails, that we could see other sides of the same guy. Ian Flynn isn't the godsend everyone makes him out to be but I think he's done a more than adequate job at cleaning the universe up and keeping things fresh.

Since that seems to be where your complaints are focused at, I think it'd be best if I knew some of your frustrations with SatAM and its presentation in the Archie continuity. As far as cartoons go it was far from amazing, but way back, it held a lot of potential as far as an expansive Sonic world went, and the comics only capitalized on that, Penders mess aside.

We're talking about the comic though, not the cartoon, and the comic came out around the same time as Sonic 2. So you have Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, and the animal friends, and that's it. Plus Sega of Japan wasn't telling them shit, so the only info they had to go on was what Sega of America was telling them and what they could figure out from promotional material. Even in the late 90s, they had to go and get a Japanese edition of Sonic Adventure just to figure out what was in it so they could do their Adventure adaption, and that was almost 100 issues into the comic.

Honestly, if we really want to make it great again, we need to scrap Boom, or at least replace it with a cartoon that's pretty much the games but animated. Make every part of the franchise virtually the same in terms of the cast, story, and tone. Unity and consistency is what Sonic needs. Sonic went to shit because each part of the franchise was so different and did its own thing. It confused people and made it lose its identity

Yeah, back then the games were good, and the cartoons and comics were just there to advertise the games. And SEGA themselves were in a better situation. Now, they're at their wits end and wasting time on something that could've been avoided if said publisher of that comic wasn't so inept and incompetent. If SEGA is gonna bring back Sonic into a good light, there's gonna have to be some changes made, including things that may not be beneficial to what they intend on doing with the mainline series. Especially if a certain branch can't settle a silly thing like someone suing them over a recolor of the mascot of the company the comic based on.

It's not shitposting to want to start things off. Sonic's 15th was a disaster and caused them to intervene. 20th was a step in the right direction. Now 25 years in and they see that Sonic still has the potential to be great, with Mania being developed by actual fans. There's no place for Archie's bullshit politics and foolishness and if that means the comic gets axed, so be it. Mania could be the first step to a true reboot. Say what you will about Mario being boring and even stagnant(Prior to Odyssey), but at least there's some form of consistency and competence found with the series. If SEGA is taking Sonic in the Mario route, they may be looking to trim some fat where appropriate.

The games come first. Everything else is expendable.

As a comicfag I don't want the games to be like the comics at all. HOWEVER, I think that if game Amy and game Knuckles were like their current comic selves they'd be a hell of a lot better

The problem is 3 things.

1. Making games that are very "retro" is popular because they're nostalgic for sure. If you wanted sonic to become nothing but that then you'll run into "New Super Mario Bros." syndrome. Which is to say those games are legitimately fun, but no one really regards them as amazing and people get bored of them quickly.

2. Sonic fans do nothing but argue about what is their favorite gameplay style. People who prefer classics, People who prefer dreamcast era and people who prefer the boost era. And if you reboot it to the classic era only it'd only really satisfy those people.

3. At this point there wouldn't even be a reason to reboot it. Like you could legitimately just...make more sonic games that play like how you want and no one would care. Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles and Eggman (for the most part) have been the only characters since Unleashed. If they just...started making games more classic or advanced styled no one would really even notice, without even the need to reboot anything.

What Sonic universe did a cool world and story better, anon? The most interesting thing about the Genesis era games was Knuckles being the guardian of the Master Emerald. Everything else amounted to "here's an island, here's a snarky blue dude who goes fast, a smart yellow guy with a birth defect, and here's an evil doctor who tries to take over the world". Amy wants a sense of stability (marriage, kids, etc.) that Sonic can't provide since he's adventurous and free-spirited, but Shadow can as he's more serious and focused. Sonic doesn't need the emotional support Amy can bring but Shadow can.

Some of this is headcanon (it's a ship, duh) but it tries to extrapolate based on personalities in the games and licensed material such as comics, mostly with Shadow being the serious guy who works with G.U.N. instead of being the glorified Donte he is in Free Riders and Boom.

For as much flak the Sonic Fanbase gets the current Freedom Planet Fanbase is pure toxicity. Even though the game is alright in its own way. Do not expect to freely talk within the forums or their discord without one of the moderators to get salty and get a rise out of you.

I believe they're normal-people eyes in the newer games. In the pre-reboot Archie comics as well as Fleetway STC, Eggman's eyes are black with red irises (like AoSTH/SatAM). As of the reboot they're normal-people eyes like in the games.

You don't need a fucking cast change when proper direction is the only thing different. The difference between the games and Boom is night and day so just tell the people directing the game voices to stop being retards.

This even goes for Shadow. Thornton is also Orbot, Zik, and like a dozen different characters on Boom, plus an assortment of roles over his career. If you want Shadow to sound different from how he is now then chances are he can do the voice you want, it's just not the voice the game devs want.

I've always thought of eggman as like A Scientific snake oil salesman or circus ring leader. I think Sonic was Cyrogenetically based from years ago when Dr.Gerald Robotnik decided to take a few DNA samples from him when he was young to help create Shadow. I know everyone here hates the comics, but I genuinely think Archie Eggman is a really nice balance. He hits a good note between comedic and genuinely intimidating. He's too serious for his own good in Adventure 2, but he's also way too goofy and wimpy in Colors and Lost World.

The problem with this is that the actual canon says otherwise.
From what is shown in the games...
Sonic doesn't just "run fast", he has full blown Flash-esque super speed, the kind where kinetic energy, movement, space-time, and physics are being manipulated.
"Isn't prophesized for anything" is just straight-up wrong, because Sonic 3 and Knuckles clearly shows a mural with Sonic and Eggman on it. The Echidnas apparently had legends about Sonic and Eggman's battles.
"The Ultimate Lifeform" created by the most brilliant scientist that has ever lived is an exact copy of Sonic, with alien blood. This same being has even called Sonic the 'real' Ultimate Lifeform.

It's been made pretty much clear in the games' canon that Sonic IS NOT NORMAL. The ONLY person that thinks Sonic is just some dude IS SONIC HIMSELF, and that's just his modesty and humbleness speaking because he doesn't actually care about the epic crazy prophetic whatever stuff.

He left in 2014 to do charity work and make a difference, and then Sega of America downsized, and asked him to come back, so he did because basically no one else could fill the role he could. Jason Griffith's voice acting is my least favorite thing about that era of Sonic. He had these incredibly obnoxious inflections. For Sonic, it was rising, like:

Worst of all were those godawful exclamations Sonic did.
