This is why polearms are gimped in mountainblade. The inability to do these two kinds of spear attacks.

If someone gets close to you with a spear you should be able to simply sidestep and hit them in the head with the butt of the spear shaft, even if they are for some reason so close that their chest is literally touching yours.

There should be no minimum range for pole weapons.

Specialized formation weapons like the really really long ones used by classic phalanxes, or the ones used by schiltrons, etc.

Anything under 10 feet long is probably short enough to use as a 'normal' weapon with some penalty, though we should go for 7 feet and down for unpenalized.

I think its perfectly reasonable to use a 7 foot pole weapon in close range assuming you are not in enclosed areas that will make maneuvering the pole out to your sides difficult.

A prime example of whats wrong with pole weapons. Here we have essentially the same exact weapon in pole and two handed variant. The two handed version is in all meaningful ways superior. The pole version has immense drawbacks for slightly longer reach

while infantry combat weapons were as tall as their user (using 6ft as a clean measurement, or 180cm) the equivalent length in warband doesn't work for that
reach in warband is in cm, so a cqc weapon should be 180 or lower
of course the thing is in warband is that reach is measured from the attachment point to the tip if you want to accurately measure the weapon, but that does not account for the back end haft
so really a proper infantry polearm in warband is going to be around 140 or lower, 120 is ideal
which is 5 to 4 feet long
