Fair enough. Okay, my point is that Silver should be the comedic relief. The guy the narrative makes fun of for even trying because he'll always fail and he'll always look like an idiot no matter what he does. The only times he does anything it's by sheer accident and he'll ALWAYS look dumb doing it. He keeps trying only because he genuinely doesn't know any better

So, I have tried now some romhacks. I still don't get what is the point of Sonic 3 complete, but still finished the game with Sonic and Knuckles. That Sonic 2 hack where is a little like Mario 64 was fantastic. Project S, or whatever is called was interesting, at least Silver's gameplay was. Before and After sequel had great soundtracks but level design was a bit lackluster for me. Megamix is fantastic though, also Sonic 3 & Amy was adorable, thanks to that anon who recommended it.

As for the comics, so far so good. I do enjoy the adventure and characters, but I think that I like universe more than the main ones Team Shadow a best, and Amy is also great in the comics, she is basically a pink sonic when she fights. But the more I get myself into the sonic franchise and embrace the autism, the more baffled I feel when the press or e-celebs slams on Sonic that hard.

Some people seem to forget that Silver was hated upon his introduction along with debuting in one of the worst games in the franchise.

my issue with silver is that whenever people try to use him seriously as a experienced, powerful character he simply ends up looking ridiculous.

I think Silver has the real potential to bring some realism into the series, you see, there is Sonic, a young hero, strong, travelled all over the world, faced huge challenges, and he is barely an adult.

Silver could be used to show the journey of a character with powers that wants to be a hero but has zero experience on it, show that becoming a hero is not easy, you have to train a lot, people will shit on you, you will get hurt and lose a lot, you will have to bleed to earn respect amongst the other guys, and so on.

this is a thing I feel they should have shown with Sonic, but if they missed the opportunity, Silver could be used.

Sonic is actually my favorite character among the comic cast. He has his ups and downs but he comes across as a real cool guy, relatively likeable and feels like a proper friend, with his big bro moments to Tails and all. I feel like I actually admire him as a character like Tails and the others would, instead of liking him as a mascot, because of how fun and enjoyable he can be yet flawed.

This is the biggest reason why SA2 and Heroes are Shadow's best portrayals. He seemed to enjoy himself more, and was boastful and cocky like Sonic.

In Heroes, upon reaching Casino Park, he says "cool city". The Shadow that started in Shadow's game has never been easygoing like that, and it's something that should be brought back.

I think it's just that Shadow is a very hard character to write without making him edgy or grumpy. You want him to be -somewhat- socially under-developed and distant but at the same time you need him to be able to keep up with other characters in conversation. It's not impossible to do (as SA2 showed), but it'd take a skilled writer to pull it off.

Unfortunately, I believe skilled writing is something SEGA currently lacks.

Knuckles is the default more serious/mature character in the Sonic spectrum and always has been. He also filled the on again off again rival/ally role. He can be more dramatic or adult (in a pre-teen way), or side step into comedy or slice of life as needed. Knuckles fills most needed roles Sonic and Tails are unsuited or less suited for.

Shadow fills teen edginess and "finding yourself" roles, both of which I'd strongly argue have no place in Sonic games or probably Sonic media. If Knuckles didn't exist, Shadow could be put into a similar character role, but Knuckles does so Shadow's presence accomplishes -- what exactly?

I'm not suggesting all character roles are filled, or that the series doesn't need fresh characters for new games. But what I am saying is that Shadow is a solution looking for a problem in the narrative of these games.

Meanwhile, Knuckles has way more breadth, depth and way more narrative potential, all of which are disgracefully under utilised in the current franchise-meta, including this very thread! So to repeat my previous motion...

Sort of related but in particular I like the recent Universe arc where Knuckles works with Team Dark and Amy to return the Master Emerald to Angel Island before Chip fixes the world and sends it crashing.

There's a nice moment towards the end, where he actually addresses to Amy his doubt about whether he's really cut out to be a guardian since he's clearly so bad at it. Amy basically says "no one even gives a shit about the Guardian but you do it anyway, your dedication isn't just something that can be replaced". It was one of the nicer Knuckles (and Amy) moments within the series, especially for the reboot, and if I find the panels I need to share it. As a whole in the comics I believe he hits a wonderful nice balance between brash, hotheaded goof and awkward yet focused and reliable guy. Except that's not his original role and a waste of his character; he's always been the more spiritual, self-conscious serious character with a mission to contrast Sonic's free-spirited wanderer and Tails' wide-eyed smart sidekick

Shadow, meanwhile, is a more introspective and emotional (destructive emotion, such as rage and a sense of vengenance) character, with a much more analytical and calculated persona. He's the blue oni to Knuckles' red oni, the think first and act effeciently to to Knux's better ask for forgiveness than permission kind of atitude. Shadow does best when he's closed-off because of his past but still has enough presence to play off of other characters while Knuckles finds his niche in the more self-conscious of his actions yet still passionately driven to fulfill his duty kind of guy; all this clashing with Sonic's devil-may-care recklessness and adrenaline junkie vibe, not forgetting his sense of justice and personal beliefs

tl;dr Knuckles is calm-but-not-so-above-sillyness guardian while Shadow is the self-reflective and introspective mirror of his protag look-alike

Knuckles, as Sonic's Rival, is the counterforce to Sonic. His "opposite" in a way. If Sonic is the wind, Knuckles is the mountain. Sonic is a free spirit chasing adventure, Knuckles has a great responsibility that defines his life and existence. Sonic is like chaos, Knuckles is like order.

Shadow is a Dark Sonic, but he's also treated sort of like a version of Sonic that's wrapped up in Knuckles' order-based themes. Chaos wrapped in Order, i.e. Chaos Control. He directly controls the Chaos Emeralds' power, like Knuckles can with the Master Emerald, he has a "purpose" that he defines himself with, like Knuckles, and so on. For some reason, Shadow has some slight similarities with Knuckles. It's gotten to the point where some fans of Shadow, or fans in general, interpret Shadow as having Knuckles' own traits, and then they interpret Knuckles as dumb muscle and nothing more.

Shadow's mind and memories were heavily altered and manipulated by Gerald after Maria's death. This is the real reason why Shadow's memory of Maria wasn't accurate, and why he was searching for revenge. It wasn't really his own reaction to her death. The entire time, he was just Gerald's puppet, he was Gerald's Living Weapon. When Amy spoke to Shadow, the brainwashing was broken and Shadow's mind began returning to it's natural state and the real memory was able to shine through.

Knowing all of this, I theorize that the reason Shadow has amnesia after SA2 is because his mind and memories were already in that weird state, so experiencing whatever happened after he fell must have caused his memory to ...

I think you all took my statement a little too seriously. I don't have any major headcanons about Shadow, and it's not that I'm doubting what Sega has said about his character (obviously nothing they say is "bullshit", canon is canon), my frustration was simply that the personality traits he exhibits and the actions he takes don't really match up with what they say. Fact is fact - it's canon that Shadow apparently jumps into situations without thinking, the "bullshit" part to me is just the issue that this isn't really properly reflected at all through his role in the story of the games he's in, not necessarily the fact itself.
