I'm at military level 11 and the horde is at military 14 (fucking institutions haven't reached me yet and it's almost 1600)

I had 60k~ troops with a 5:2:3 unit makeup and I lost against 35k~ horde troops

does 3 military levels really matter that much even though I have defensive ideas?

Playing EU3 trying to unite japan and I have a question.
I'm Fujuiwara (the northern clan) and I just claimed the Taira throne. Pressed it in war and now have PU with Taria clan. But it says on monarch death a Taria noble takes the throne. How do I keep the PU or absorb their land?

After years of playing HOI3 I've come back and started Black Ice inb4 >black ice

I'm a little confused about how division composition works in it. I notice for example the standard UK infantry division is roughly:
>Infantry Regiment
>Command/HQ
>AT Detachment
>AA Detachment
>Artillery Detachment
>Recon element of some form (Armoured cars, Motorbike recon etc)
>Trucks / other transport stuff

But I can't seem to find or work out what the specific advantages of some of these brigades are. I.e in the vanilla game, 3INT + 1ART worked well as a line infantry division because it gave enough strength and artillery took up no frontage. But now they do take up frontage but instead give %att/def bonuses which seems odd but fair enough).
But things like armoured cars/ scouts (not sure "spotting" is modeled in the land combat mechanics at all) and they give very little in stats, so what do they actually provide? The same goes for trucks, they just lower the combat stats of the division slightly. Anybody got any tips?

Conclave is a big overhaul and update to the political system in CK2. A lot of people complain about it because it makes the game more difficult for the player.

If you have played hundreds of hours of pre-conclave CK2 and just want to keep playing the same game, you might choose to turn it off. If you are interested in playing a more complex and up-to-date CK2, and you are prepared to learn new things, there's no reason not to play with it.

It changes laws a bit and makes the council more important. Depending on how your council power laws are set the council will need to vote on everything from declaring war, handing out titles to imprisonment and banishment.

Poland didn't take the pu and they are neutral towards me. Everyone is neutral towards me no matter what I do. I was allied to TO for a bit, but I decided to just attack them instead. Lithuania is bothering my progress a bit, but at least I haven't had a serious conflict with them just yet. I have been very tentative with the hordes because I'm behind in mil-tech and they aren't. But I've grown enough to yield an army of 40k now without having financial problems, so I think I can make some progress soon.

Russia can be pretty difficult if you don't get that easy start, you can't really declare war on any of the hordes without Lithuania or maybe Denmark declaring on you. If you rival Poland when Ottoman's discover you they should be friendly, also try getting Bohemia or Hungary as an ally, or support Sweden's independence if you don't want Finland yet.

They are there to simulate that the crown doesn't own everything in your land. They won't bother you if you just leave them alone (with their required % of land). For the most part. Sometimes you'll have to please them with one of the options giving them loyalty if an event made them unhappy. When you are used to them, you can even use them to get nice bonuses.

If I remember right, you don't need Quest for the New World in order to get the Azores of Madeira. It would be best to stick with those two colonies until later on when you're financially comfortable and then start on Brazil. Africa has a lot of hostile natives and it makes it a bit tougher and more expensive to colonize for a while.

Not really sure about dynasties. I think it has something to do with claiming their throne maybe. I never tried it so I'm not sure how it plays out for sure

I'm starting fairly new in EU4 and I have a couple of questions. Also I'm basically following the Arumba - Filthy EU4 tutorial in which I'm playing as the Scots.

1) So, I'm aiming to ally with France before i war with England, however, tEngland vs France started early. If I ally with France, would I be immediately be put in the war?

a) If yes, will France be the primary, i.e. if they ask for a peace deal I won't be able to make demands since I'm a secondary?

2) What's the primary best build or aim (or ideas) to have the strongest infantry or at least a crushing build?

3) Are the dice rolls totally random?

That is what you are doing wrong. Look at how the interest on your loans is 5.2 per month, and your deficit is 4.8
If you didn't have those loans, you'd be breaking even at this point (which is often good enough).
In EU3 your research sliders should be maxed out on one tech at a time (most of the time), minus whatever minting you need.
Reduce your military maintenance (and even your colonial maintenance) as needed when you aren't at war.
Get national bank and a level 5 or 6 master of mint to allow you to mint to the point that you never go bankrupt during the course of the year. Most of your tax income happens on Jan 1, and then you have to survive small losses every month for the rest of the year without running out.
You should be thinking along the lines of a budget--that is, if your monthly deficit is going to be 5, you should make sure that you don't spend so much of your tax income that you have less than 60 ducats by the end of January (because then you will eventually hit 0 at some point in the year and have to take out another horrible loan).

Playing as scotland as a beginner isn't what I'd recommend to be honest. Anyway, Scotland can be fun.

1. Yes they will drag you into the war unless the war has been going for a year or something, not sure how long before they can't call you in. Maybe it's 2 years.

1a. France will be primary, so taking from you in the peace deal will be more expensive. However, not impossible. England want your land, so he may be inclined to pay more adm for your land than for French land. But generally speaking the AI will for the most part only take your ally's land if he is primary foe.

2. Quality makes the best quality-soldiers, it's in the name really. This is what you should take if you want your inf cav art to be better. It also has discipline.

Offensive is good too, but this focus more on your leader's pips. If you take both Quality and Offensive it will make you really strong. Top this off with Defensive and you'll be extra strong.

3. Yes, but your pips will help you roll higher than your opponent. Pips on your leader that is. The terrain will help you roll higher than your opponent as well - or lower if you're the attacker. Be observant about the terrain, and use it to your advantage, and you'll be a lot better at warfare just like that.

As Portugal, take National Bank for your first idea and Quest for the New World as your second idea after you get trade 7 and govt 9. Switching ideas almost never makes sense, except in ridiculous situations usually involving playing as some extremely underpowered shithole country that needs gamey tactics to survive. Portugal is the tutorial island of EU3, so you don't need to do that.

Don't take more colonies than you can afford. You get a fixed number of colonists per year, and sending them to colonies costs a significant amount. Letting the colonies grow naturally costs just as much over time, but doesn't cost you any colonists. So you have to play the tradeoff between developing your colonies quickly (by sending colonists repeatedly), and letting them grow naturally (while sending your colonists to start fresh colonies in other places) which means they will be a drain on your finances for many decades.

Same deal with natives in colonies, right? If you leave them alone you will get a much larger population in the province after your colony fully develops (which will still have your culture), but they may attack your colony wasting valuable time and money for you. If you send your troops to kill the natives, when your colony fully develops it will only have a population of 1000. Usually you are just going to want to fight off the most aggressive natives (which you may have to do to even begin to establish a colony in some places) and leave the gentlest ones alone.

Buildings are good, but their payoff is very longterm, so if you are struggling at the beginning, it would be better to save your money for essential things like not going bankrupt. However certain buildings can be extremely profitable in the right provinces. Use the ledger to figure out which of your provinces to develop first and which buildings to put there.
Some provinces are relatively worthless and only worth building on with buildings that benefit your country as a whole.

In EU3 Scotland is easy because any time England attacks you, you get a free doomstack of Highlanders you just need to pay maintenance for. You just tear bits off England while they are also being attacked by France, eventually take over the whole island, and then just play as Britain (whether you officially form GB or not).

Like a basic guide to play Scotland, you mean? Or simply just the ideas? The ideas will depend on what kind of game you're having. As Scotland I think the common thing to do is just forming UK in a bit different manner. If so I would focus on economy, since Scotland is low on money. You can take trade when you get some power in the english channel. But first thing first. You will spend the first part of your campaign taking over the british isles. Economy, and military ideas is what I'm thinking. Many people will say administrative for coring cost reduction. This is a wise decision too. You will have to choose between these two, because you won't be able to take both before you have taken some dip or mil ideas as well. Maybe you should choose administrative first because you will gain more money once you start taking over English land. I think administrative is the winner now that I think about it. I would start with this one, but it's your choice. Don't rush through those first ideas tho, because you want to be quick to open the second idea slot, I would choose quality here.

I'm sure if you're following Arumba he will know where to expand first. I would take Ireland first, while I wait for French favors and their help to take on England. Ally Denmark too if you're not rivaled to them. However, you may want to backstab Denmark later if you go colonizing in the northern parts of America:

If you want to colonize, you can take colonization ideas, attack Norway with the mission, take Iceland, and basically do what Norway will be doing, take some canadian provinces and go from there.

But you may want to wait until you have the british isles before you go colonizing. I don't know. Starting on colonizing early means you'll be in a defensive position to an England that will only become stronger.

As for further ideas, quanity will be good later in the game because you will be low on manpower compared to other big nations.

After your scotland campaign, you may want to start a campaign as Spain. It's a great starter-country, and you will get to colonize the world. If you want to play a comfy game then you can restart your game until you start without France rivaling you. Then you will ally him, and you will be safe the entire campaign, and you can just colonize and have fun.

If you want a game with warfare but not too difficult, then Poland is a good choice. You will have Poland-Lithuania, so you'll be strong. You will have enemies on all sides, but it's a lot of fun and it's not like you'll be eaten up, because you're big and strong.

What do you mean? if you change the template of an existing division that is deployed they are switched to whatever you changed in the template e.g adding a an artillery thing to a template means all divisions of that type will now be allocated arty. If you want to change a deployed division to another template e.g Infantry into Motorised you select it then click on the counter on the left

I'm not trying to ebin le genocide maymay, I'm trying to get resources and soldier pops so my tiny country can have some hope of surviving and even expanding.

The congo supplies a lot of the resources I was lacking in my economy and tons of soldiers, which is great, but I'm struggling to make it work which is why I haven't posted in a while. My taking the congo has really seemed to piss off the european powers who are now taking turns shitting on me. My only ally in Europe is KuK who gets stomped by Italy and Germany before I can even move my congolese troops anywhere useful, and then abandons me when Russia (and now France) attack me.
I thought I could use annexing the congo as a way to take back some of my clay in Europe, which would give me soldier pops and reserves in the right place, more NFs, etc, but now it seems like maybe I should go back and keep it as a puppet or something instead, rather than deal with this disaster.

Near the beginning of the game I actually made a choice in an event to get closer with prussia. For a while I was Russia's substate while in Germany's sphere. Unfortunately, when UBP gets independence, an event fires that tanks its relations with both Russia and Germany. That's why only countries that are afraid of Russia will be my allies now.

Russia does have cores on me, but before independence I didn't even have cores on myself, so...

Having lots of vassals are not wise in my experience. They get rebellious so easily now if there are more than one of them. I'm currently annexing estonia without influence, so I'm not sure I need it.
