New to WH, but not Total War.

Is magic really, REALLY shitty?
I've been playing custom battles for a few days and I'm quite decent at it.
That is, as long as I use a conventional army.
Every time I try to add magic to the mix I end up with a Close Defeat.
And I've tried everything.
I thought that at least the support magic, using regeneration and shit would help, but heeeell no.
Seems like I'm better getting some artillery + infantry instead of a single wizard/whatever.

The only exception seem to be the VC.
Their abilities seem to be the only ones that have a decent impact on the battle.

So I'm impressed by the AI in Warhammer - and this is just on Hard mode. Does VH and Legendary simply give the AI extra buffs? Or does the AI get better as well?

Also, do you guys recommend battle realism mode? I had alot of fun with it in Shogun but it seems a bit well...unrealistic for a game filled with mages and magic and all sorts of technologies - seems to me every faction would have some means of observing the entire battlefield at all times.

No its just there's a lot of different variables to magic. You need to know the lore the spell and the target to really get the most use out of it.

You can't just spam magic attacks. You need to know to use certain spells against certain targets. generally armored spells against armored targets. And also try to pin the enemy in place before hitting them with a spell because they can dodge it.

A lot of unit buffs are also really good.

Also if you're making an army in custom batttles. its actually best to modify the spells that your wizard brings. each spell has a cost and they're quite expensive, especially since you're limited in your winds of magic so its best to pick which spells you're going to use most often and only bring those and use the rest of the money on infantry.

Cheaper wizards or buying the right abilities is key in understanding multi player, too.

Its more fun to fight 3 units of gobbos than 1 unit of gobbo with +20 leadership. Meaning the veryhard campaign difficulty will spawn more armies, balancing it out.

Fun! My first attempt at sieging Marienburg was disastrous, but my 2nd attempt was really good, and I claimed it.

I had my peasant core with 6 siege towers come in and do a straight forward attack. I recruited a bunch of men-at-arms and they were able to defeat the shitty spearmen up top, so later on I was able to come down the ramparts early and flank the force I was fighting down on the ground.

My artillery chipped away at their ranged in the center, and earlier on destroyeda wall in the far right where I used my knights to flank. Pegasus Knights were used to sweep away any ranged infantry.

The Chaos Dwarf fanbook is pretty decent, mostly because it's an expansion to an existing army list (Legion of Azgorh) based on a faction with a well-established lore and playstyle.

The other fan books suffer from being too cluttered with redundant units and unimaginative knockoffs of historical units. The chaos dorf one is 60% Legion of Azgorh, 20% 4th ed Chorf stuff and 20% OC that actually fits the army.

How anyone can be so fucking stupid to "lose" track of enemy armies when every army has a gigantic flag (larger than terrain features, so they can't get "hidden by mountains" like he claims) on their back. As for the supposed confusion over what terrain is and isn't impassible, you get a gigantic yellow circle when you click on an army. If you're not a chucklefuck, you will notice that this goes across the terrain feature that looks like a ford, and thus work out that that place is a ford.

Also sooner is better than later since no garrison and they don't build up.

Two siege weapons in your army means their defenses are trash. Just stay in on portion of the wall. Put peasants in front, Use trebs to knock down the important towers and then move up and either knock holes in the wall or open the gate (move up for better accuracy, don't get within their small arms or artillery fire however.)

And then hit their defending infantry through the breach. And then archers. And then glorious charge to their center. Should be doable. don't even need to delay. hit them before they can recruit to much or maybe if they get distracted with another army. And before the garrison becomes too big.
