I've been playing Guilty Gear since #Reload and I think Xrd is a better Guilty Gear than the XX series. That's even without my former main making it into Xrd. FRC was a pain in the ass and the new mechanics are fun. Also the online lobby system is second only to actually being at the arcade.

the game is arguably better overall too, the RC system is extremely clever and intuitive, you can pick up a new character and do fun stuff.

very little is lost from XX, it's even the same speed (startups and hitstop are identical) just about everyone was satisfied with it. best sequel we could possibly have got desu.

Sort of. I would actually say there are no "bad" beginner characters provided you are willing to put in the effort to learn hard execution with characters like Johnny and Zato. Every character will teach you something different about the game, with some being more widely applicable than others.

Axl isn't nearly as rushdown as most other characters, which is where he fails as a newbie character. On the other hand, he is forced to play neutral very consciously, and he's not very hard execution-wise.

The most important thing is that you like the character (and don't mind losing ten million times to people better than you.)

Not really, he requires a bit more matchup knowledge than most other characters. You've got to play him in a range of different ways depending on who he's fighting. And his normals can combo into each other, but you've got to know how and when to get the right angles. He's a good character but requires a little work.

Yes and no. Axl isn't too hard execution-wise. However, reading the opponent and knowing the placement/timing of his normals are what make him a little more complicated. Stick with him if you are interested.

Microsoft was foolish to do what they did on the Xbox One's launch. Sony should have been playing catchup after dropping their special snowflake processing that no dev wants to deal with, but they managed to hit the same point by not fucking up as hard as MS did at the start.

They are free-form, but you usually use the free-formness to pick the best combo for the situation. You almost always want knockdown (unless you can kill). You want to carry to a corner. Then you optimize for damage, which is slightly different against different characters, and even different health levels (you might jab a low-health Potemkin 20 times rather than do a normal combo on him because Guts).

Compare this to the one and only combo you need for (almost) every character in SF.

It really depends. If you have a lot of flexibility, comboing itself can be exciting because players have the option to go for harder (easier to drop) combos to get bigger damage or go for resets (risk:reward). Also, players have to keep in mind their opponent's options like Burst.

Long combo potential means that pressure can also be long and, this part is actually super-interesting and very similar to neutral game. And here again you have to keep in mind the defenders' options like alpha counter, burst, blitz, etc.

I don't particularly miss huge combos when I play SF, but I do miss the real pressure. For the record, I really like SF... I just hate SFV.

In my opinion Guilty Gear isn't a game you can really learn in training mode. You can learn a lot of things, but generally your best course of action is to play online, recognize situations where you failed to take advantage of an opening, and then go to training mode to figure out something you can do. For instance: you keep landing throws but you don't get any damage off it? Hit the lab and find out what you can do so that when you actually play you'll win. The neutral/pressure game is too chaotic to really learn against a dummy.

Might help if we knew who your character was and what your issues are. I have a lot of fun with Xrd's tutorial, mission, and (to a lesser extent) the combo modes. The best thing you can do is learn something really basic and widely applicable and then get that consistent.

Also don't force yourself to play Ky or whatever if you don't actually like that character. I often see two things in Guilty Gear: SF players forcing themselves to play The Ryu (which is probably actually Sol anyway), and Smash players tier whoring like it actually matters in GG.

I'd just grind out IAD's in training mode until it becomes second nature. If you aren't landing them in a "stress-free" situation then there is no way you can land them, at least consistently, in a real match. Whether the match is serious or not.

Yeah those IAD combos are tough. They get easier as doing the 956 and 754 motions gets more and more second-nature. Unfortunately, they're a part of most of Millia's good combos.

You might want to pick up a secondary character that's easier to play. I like having a character I aspire to master and a character with whom I can gorilla my way to victory. You'll always feel better winning with Millia, but every once in a while you just gotta switch to Sol or Leo and lay down the law on that fuckhead who plays Jack-O.

Why is the JJBA story mode so easy? Never played it before and perfected my way through it first time as Mariah pressing nothing but fireball and dp, the AI sits back and occasionally runs into it.
