Huge Orianna fan here.

Ori chunks enemies with her combo and aa's. Her bread and butter is her W. She doesn't need her ult to take down other players. With a max W and sufficient AP backing it up she can bring a squishy to a quarter health. That's usually happening midgame. The ult is just to keep the opponent there (shouldn't be too much of a problem if you land w and use q well) or to pin down the more mobile enemies like Ahri or Kat. Brand is not mobile. It's also efficient as self-peel. It's an ult that you should only use if you have to.

If you're having a hard time with the range on the ball (it's tricky, way too little range imo) try bringing Exhaust or Ghost and maybe get Rylai's.

imo the key to her is to get your auto attacks on an enemy during your combo and move the ball
around a lot (duh). Max Q W E and don't give them a chance to get out of range if you're going all in, if they escape you're left pretty vulnerable until late game as her skills take a shit-ton of mana. Most Orianna kills come from an auto for me, not her ult if that makes sense.

You probably played a bit of Orianna in your time but considering such things might help.

How do i play Ryze? There are just way better choices. It would mitigate her mana issues but unless you're planning on taking a load of damage it's outclassed by most of the 'heavy' AP items. Morello's gives you 40 more AP, free grievous wounds, and mana upon a kill which is huge for her.

Orianna isn't about sustainability, she's a pure glass cannon. You're supposed to be shredding enemies and farming, not taking damage. It's why Double Edged Sword is recommended on her in lieu of Battle Trance. If you want a less squishy midlaner try someone like Swain, who highly benefits from RoA.

Played a lot with it after Rilays was nerfed (would do Lost Chapter into RoA into Morello). Now I'm doing Morello into Liandrys. I don't really miss the extra mana or health. But RoA is actually pretty OK if you build it early specially at lower elos since you're very likely to stack it and the max AP on that thing is pretty good.
You shouldn't really be getting hit a lot as Orianna though, since your combo has a pretty good range and for most fights you'll probably have someone to carry ball, no need to jump in before tanks.
