I'd like to think there is a slight hold back on progress posts because people are focusing more on getting their project ready for DD13 than anything else. Should I be using properties in unity c#? Seems like the easiest way to to go about it is to just expose fields so they show up in the editor. I'm reading that [SerializeField] doesn't call the setter.

Yes, let's fill the OP with even more useless links.
And besides that, how is the OP 'tidy'? Why is Godot and Love on the same line? Are those engines related somehow? What about UE4 and Unity, are they related engines? Why isn't Construct and GameMaker on the same line?

>Old Thread
>Previous Demo Days
>Old Jams
Why is "Old" and "Previous" both being used here? That makes it look messy. Also the OP didn't even update the "Old Thread" link, that thread is from almost 2 weeks ago.

Hey OP why are you using a pedophile picture instead of something game dev related. Oh my we are VERY upset by engines aren't we? Why is that?

Oh are they LITERALLY going to be the FIRST result in google? Let's just not mention them ever then because google already references them as things that exist. Maybe try to get that "if stamina <=0 { stamina = 0;}" before stamina regen.

My train of thought: it checks is stamina is not more than 100 and less than 0, so if it's -1, it's not regenerating. And you make that -1 as 0 after regeneration check.

Actual advice:
Remember dithering and shading aren't mutual exclusive. You don't have to rely on hatching alone.
As for shades, try to tint your color choices. Don't just slight brightness up and down, curve your pallet (just slightly) to whatever your light source is supposed to be. Personally, I move highlights towards yellow, and shadows towards blue. Again, just slightly.

Maybe if your requirements are super clear
But with gamedev so much changes on the fly
>>
>>169536247
Its important to have some semblance of how you're going to set everything up, but projects inevitably grow and change in scope overtime
>>
>>169536247
You should have a plan, but that plan will change as you go along.
>>
>>169536247
It's true in a situation where you know your problem. But in a game you're building something that is iterative thus you can't plan out everything. I tend to jump in and then plan out systems like how items, inventory, containers etc interact with diagrams.
>>
>>169536247
Useful if you know exactly what you're making. Part of the OOP cargo cult, so you can't tell what's really useful. You can't account for every possibility when you start. Industry standard, as >>169536339 notes.

We don't really like OOP here. https://mollyrocket.com/casey/stream_0019.html is a good place to start for a counterargument. The thing is, few programmers in AGDG are competent enough to use this style of programming, and might be served better with OOP.

People work in different ways. Neither is bullshit. School will just teach you how to do it in the way that's
1. Easiest to grade
2. translates to a corporate working environment that is the way it is by necessity

But it is worth noting that people create in different ways. This is especially true for artforms. Find your groove and the way you can create that best suits you and run with that.

you've clearly put some effort in, but there are still some glaring problems.
The whole point of Wave Race was that your jetski interacted with the water in a semi-realistic way. In this it seem like its just a plane with a water shader over it. When you land after a jump, nothing goes underwater.

It's ok so far but jetski games need water physics man

creates a circle of n points
for(int i = 0; i < 360; i+= 360/n)

create_object(r*cos(i), parentY, r*sin(i), "powerupthing");

Take a control or input.
work off that.

originality comes from working from scratch and putting every idea you've ever seen out of your brain.

it's like coming up with a new name for an item that already has a name. You don't modify the existing name that will just look dumb. you start from scratch.

Do that with your game. what does the controls do to the player, what can you do with that? what can you limit, add, control for the players enjoyment.

Making an RTS? imagine how you can get the player involved with precise clicking. locational clicking and how you move a character around the landscape and how to challenge that. you run your characters in a straight line? have an enemy that pierces through enemies in a straight line.

Just like clear your mind bro.

Since this is in the Update loop if you press 'w' for example then it should return true for every frame, you might not actually be catching that with your lastInputY function, wherever it is.

An alternative approach might be to use Input.GetKeyUp(KeyCode.W) or GetKeyDown which only returns true for the single frame and see if that works better for you.

The way I did it is a pretty consistent workflow.
To summarize, I use these steps (and look at the images on the left) for both pixel and drawn
-Find an art style that I like, and practice trying to emulate it. In my case, I studied the art style of Shigenori Soejima.
-Draw a very rough doodle, and feel free to add or remove lines as you need. Essentially, you want to arrive at something that roughly resembles what you're happy with
-Draw over only the lines that you want with a darker shade on a new layer
-Double check that your proportions are right, and try flipping the canvas once. Flipping the canvas gives you a fresh look at your work and you can tell if you drew something fucked up
-Color block. Fuck around until you're happy with shades.
-My shading is really easy but it looks great. Add sharp shadows in solid black and highlights in a very very light white. The sharper the shadows and highlights (and everything in general, the better).

>>169548417
It's a bad cut she has on her nose. It's bandaged. See the image on the right. It's kind of tricky to get it looking right in pixel form, but since the player sees the portrait attached first, I think it should be fine.

The problem with putting magic and item gimmicks (and environmental traps) in shooters is that you need to make sure that there is an actual reason to use magic rather than just shooting dudes in the face, while also making sure that shooting dudes in the face isn't unsatisfying or ineffective.

If you wanted to seriously purse this sort of idea the first step is working out a basic idea of what your gameplay is actually supposed to be.
A game like DOOM is pretty much entirely about running up and shooting dudes in the face with a big gun, so the sort of options you have for abilities are going to be narrowed down into different ways of running up to dudes and shooting them in the face.
Compare this to a semi-steath game like dishonored where abilities span stealth, traps and shooting dudes in the face.

Continuing work for Demo Day 13 build.

Scores and bonuses tally at the end of a stage and you are awarded 1 of 3 different colored fragments that slot into the moon gauge on the side. The combination of gems you have at the end of a full play determines 1) which of the 3 endings you get and 2) if you will get to fight one of the two EX bosses. not that there is more than just the first stage at the moment

Probably going dark again for another few days because there is a lot to do still menu and art wise before the 8th (but I always have the general opened about 16-17 hours a day so I will usually see anything I should respond to or catch anything I can help with.)

this is what i was getting at basically, originality is a big fat myth that was invented by the modern art movement, every idea is just derived from other things so 'creative' people are actually just people who have a lot of unique experiences, and 'talent' in a field is actually just incidental interest in that subject that caused a person to spend more time studying it/have more passion for it

if you don't know where you got an idea that just means you've had so many experiences that you can't remember where you got the idea from, nothing truly has no basis because 100% original thought is pretty much impossible, all you can do is mix and match the things you've seen and heard and improve on it

You're talking more about the work that goes into things.
Creative or not, you're not good at painting, so you're not going to be able to paint a picture. Likewise, regardless of how many stories you may have read, or how creative you may think you are, you still need to be able to write.

Think of creativity like a multiplier for other skills. If that skill is zero, then it doesn't matter how creative you are. Creativity is something that can develop through worldly experience, but you still need to apply it to something

Read up on 'for loops'.

The unity documentation, and learn sections have info on them.

A pseudo-code of it would be something like:
Starting at 0, and set i = 0 (int i = 0)
if i is currently less than 360 (i < 360)
do the following code ( all the operations )
then increase i by 360/n (i += 360/n)
and check to see if i is still less than 360
then do the code again.

You could try putting it in the Start method, so that it will run one time, at the start of the game.

>No magic spell or curse or whatever can ever be original because the concept of magic exists.

Yes it's hard to have an idea that's not based on personal experience like that and yes it's getting even harder. Yes originality is overrated. To deny real originality is possible though, that is to deny a huge swath of human achievement, not just in storytelling and art, but in design and invention.

All this flailing, but you failed to really show anything.

If this helps; the point is that everything is just built up out of past experiences. Nothing you do exists in a vacuum, all things flow from the source.

A counter though, is that you can have original experiences and then share on them. Then you do really 'own' it.

If you are referring to it just as an intellectual pursuit, then sure, maybe. There could be instances.

In the same tutorials section of the Unity website, at the bottom are more sections on all kinds of topics.

If you check the scripting one, the sixth link there covers the different loops.

A loop is just a way to have the computer repeatedly do something but usually with an increment to some value each time.

You could manually place all the pick up objects at X = 0, and 1, and 2, and so on. Or you could have the code place the pick up objects at X = i, and increase the value of i by 1 each time it finishes placing the pick up object.

Anons code that was suggested was using some basic Trigonometry functions to set the X and Z coordinates at positions along the edge of a circle using a certain value of i, then after placing the pick up object, increasing the value of i to determine new X and Z coordinates for the next pick up object to be placed.

That's a negative, ghost rider.

I know the art rules "Don't draw with black lines" and "Use shadows that are any color besides black" but I'm willingly ignoring them for sake of the stylized design I'm going for, and I'm happy with the result.

So just like in that roll a ball tutorial, the effects of the commands in the code only happen when you the player gave input that unity could understand, and if it was looking for it.

Try this, in the Start() method add something like
print("This is when I will do stuff in the start method");

and in the Update() method add
print("This is when I'm doing the stuff in the Update method");

if(Input.GetKeyDown(KeyCode.Space)) {
print("I pressed the space bar and did all the code in these brackets");
}

Where do you think the best and most convenient place to put the pick up object spawning/placing code should go if you only want it to happen one time?
>>
>>169559308
i dont understand the question here.
pixelart animation is more difficult than traditional art animation because you have less space to work with.

>No invented language can ever be original because other languages exist.
exactly
how can any language be original? everyone on earth knows language as a set of rules and sounds, so to make a truly original language you would basically have to make something in one of two ways: observing something that nobody else has ever observed and that breaks the current understanding of language/the universe's laws, and this is pretty much impossible because all vocalization happens by vibrations which is well understood, or creating something random, which can't be original because a human can't actually be random which is part of the inability to produce original things, one of these is never going to happen because of the breadth of our knowledge of the universe's mechanics, and the other is impossible for a human to produce, because we can only produce things based on observations of reality or observations of other's ideas which going far enough back in time, also started as just observations of reality, memetically spread to that person and eventually taking the form of their idea through an evolution-like process where good parts of the idea are kept and bad parts of it are tossed
and this applies to pretty much everything you just said, just following a different path of origin each time, you can't say that any of those things are original as they were all inspired by observations of life that became more remixed with other ideas and thus more removed from the origin over time
you can't point to anything in the world created by human hands and say 'this has no basis in reality whatsoever, none of the concepts or objects herein were produced from nothing'
the closest thing you could do to making an original language is to show a person who has lived in a cave their entire life something slightly esoteric, i.e sounds of whales communicating, the person will hail you as an original person only because they aren't wise enough to know where you got the idea from
>>
>>169559567
I might disagree.
I've personally tried both. Pixel art gives me more wiggle room with abstraction. I have to use space smarter, but ultimately I can get more from less when the pixels aren't taken 'literally' as they are in traditional art. Plus, 6 frame walk cycles in pixels look fluid as fuck, but really damn jerky in traditional.

Not saying you're wrong, I just have experienced differently.

if you can do pixel animation (and you can draw traditionally) i dont see how traditional animation would be something you cant do. pixel animation is more difficult because you're handicapped from using small movements. there's no real difference other than that.

Best of luck anon, keep doing tutorials and remember to check those scripting links underneath the tutorials section.

Also, you can get crafty with the tools within the editor as well to lay things out in a circle.

I added a cube, and used "Shift + D" to duplicate it, moved that one. Set the pivot point to be the center of all the currently selected objected. Selected the other cube, used shift D again to dupe those and rotated them around that pivot point. I believe you can hold control while rotating to snap to increments as well.
>>
Gogem sure is shy when you ask him simple questions!
>>
>>169560596
Didn't say I can't do traditional.

In terms of turning over a final animation, I'll be done with a walk cycle in a couple of hours with pixels, and a couple of days with traditional. It's just an entirely different skillset, and you can get away with more in pixels.

Pixel art isn't handicapped from using small movements either, at least in my experience. And if a movement is so small that it ABSOLUTELY can't be conveyed in pixels, then it's probably not worth wasting time animating.

you need more practice if thats your estimates for a walk cycle.... you're never gonna finish a project at that pace.

youre insane, pixelart is by definition low resolution, if you lower the resolution small movements are no longer visible.

>>169560796
well sure a pokemon walkcycle for example is ~easier~ to create, it's essentially 3 blobs of figure conveying the concept of walking without really making a thing that looks anything like an actual walking person. but that doesnt make it easier to conceptualize in the first place.... someone had to think of the best way to symbolize and bastardize figure and movement into something so small and foreign to the actual subject but still read as the intended subject. that's difficult for at least the first time you do it and alot can go wrong.

I've realized that one of the hardest things in Blender is controlling the camera. It would be so intuitive to occasionally switch to some sort of FPS view where you could navigate with wasd and the mouse to the desired location and angle, and then continue work.

>Adds some actual reason to get better at the game
That's what I was thinking. I know difficulty is the 'go to' measure of longevity for most shmups nowadays but I want the first two difficulties (easy/normal) to be as accessible as possible (normal still having a challenge but not overwhelming odds that you see traditionally).

The third difficulty will be closer to what a hardcore shmup player expect but in the end I want the reason to keep playing and keep getting better to be because you want to get all 3 endings and eventually unlock all of the (currently) 7 extra VN scenes to go through in the archives area to learn more about the characters and world.

>Don't do that. It's not good for your mental health. I know.
I've been a lurker for several years now but I have never brought my prototypes to the general (ARPG and a metroidvania). After taking the leap to start a new project and post here from the very start of it I am kind of anxious of accidentally missing a question or response.

Godus took cues from the classic Populous games to render the world. Whereas Populous used tiles (a small, 9x9 piece of the zoom in of the world was visible at a time), Godus seamlessly cuts through the world mesh. I think seeing it in movement shows it better than I ever could with words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soINYuOgZV8

I'm curious: is Godus' an established technique with a name I could do some research on, or was it something specially crafted for that game and that would require some moderate coding/shader knowledge?

Here's a demo of what I have so far. That's a cube passing through an area. Only pixels within a certain distance of a center point are rendered. You can move that center point with the camera (not yet implemented).

Still unsolved: rendering the sides. If you want more help with this let me know, post your discord or twitter to DM if that's easier.

way to creep everyone out gogem ya fuckin creep
>>
would it be a ton of work to have clothes shred as you play or should it just start naked, when you're powerful enough you get naked right away anyway
>>
>>169559608
I think it gets more difficult as you up the resolution to a point around 128p or so but 32 probably is not too bad. I've been doing 24 and its not been so bad.
>>
>>169567965
I mean yes it would of course, but seems simple too
>>
How much money is it feasible to make of amateur game dev?
>>
>>169568894
a ton, like millions
>>
>>169568894
yesterday somebody told me it's something around 200 dollars if you're lucky
>>
>>169568894
It really runs the whole range from $10 to millions. Depends on your quality, advertising, follow up post release, previous fans, etc.
>>
>>169568894
>feasible
what does this mean?
>>
>>169568894
Most make nothing, some make billions.

Game dev is like buying a lottery ticket.
>>
>>169568894
Right now, there exists a set of actions you can perform well within your skill set... which would make you millions.

You probably won't do the right set of things, though.

So what's /agdg/'s bandwagon genre right now?

Until you realize pixel made cavestory in 5 years.

Pixelated mario clone, like the last 20 years.

Why are writers so shit, it's like they don't really care
>>
>>169569496
It used to be 2D platformers... but now we really do have a wide spread of different things to the point that you can't be an edgy fag about it without being wildly incorrect

He also made both the engine and his own tracker software for it while working a full time job at a Japanese company.

You haven't played my MMO yet though, it's not like the others and it's really cool
>>
>>169569984
It's a simple game but the little details are good, not stopping to talk changing the course of the game stood out the me
>>
>>169569905
This. They are mindless button smashers which gives you the impression of progression of development, but in reality you are just playing a waiting game like any other browser game but with nicer graphics and in 3D. I've missed like a decade of fine games because I've got glued to vanilla WoW. Never again. It's so tempting though, but I have to be strong.
