The real story behind Nostalrius

Many people questioned Nostalrius after they announced that they would hand their database and core to Valkyrie of all servers. After all there were other more capable servers that can actually script staff and not have AQ not released for 8 years, and there were other servers closer to the Nostalrius ideals that didn't sell characters and gold to its playerbase like Valkyrie did. Giving their database and core to some other trustworthy person/server that had nothing to do with vanilla would also be a valid option. So why Valkyrie?

In fact it was Valkyrie that approached Nostalrius and not the other way around. Valkyrie offered to buy Nostalrius database and core. At this point in time Nostalrius devs had realized that official legacy servers was never going to happen so they might as well cash in. It was a win/win for both parties involved.

Both parties agreed that the price should be relevant to the amount of players that come back since noone could predict that so many people would flood Valkyrie. There was a static part to the price that Valkyrie would pay anyway and a dynamic part that would depend on how many players join Valkyrie. Valkyrie has to pay the static part upfront.

Almost immediately after releasing Anathema, Vitaliy tried to bargain to greatly lower the price of the dynamic part of the deal. Nostalrius staff were furious and after trying to reason with Vitaliy for a couple of days, they decided to close the transfers and to hold the characters as hostages in order to get the agreed sum of money.

That's why Nostalrius didn't immediately say that the old characters would never be back. If it was Blizzard that was hunting them after all, they would have made their announcement immediately after all. After several weeks passed and Valkyrie now had gathered a huge amount of players, it was fairly obvious that Vitaliy would not cave in to their desires so they made that announcement out of spite.

The irony regarding elysium making money under the table (and nost if you remember those old rumors) is that they would make a FORTUNE by being upfront about it and hosting a chinese server with a cash shop for gold/gear/mounts, etc.
The vast majority of gold is bought by chinese players and they have zero issues with it - it's absolutely 100% normal for them to buy virtual currency in video games and even often considered "not cool" to not take advantage of it or at the very least look poor IRL.
I know someone will argue about gold sellers, but again, they mostly sell to other chinks. The western buyers are simply a nice bonus.
Only the faggiest redditor would complain about a chink only realm with a cash shop only for that server.

This of course assumes they wouldn't be doing shady shit on top of the upfront parts which i doubt, but just saying it would make them a lot of money and much more than they're making now in any case.

They were not worried because they had the image of a non-profit. It would be difficult for Blizzard to sue them if they were not profiting off the copyright. Once someone starts profiting off your copyright it gives you a much stronger case.

There are all kinds of emulators available and as long as they are free then they typically don't get taken down. The second someone starts trying to charge money they get legal notices.

Hunters have great base damage compared to other classes but scale less with gear.

So right now with very little gear in the game they're great, as items are updated and more raids are released they start to fall further and further behind
