Previous autism: >>169296774

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Starcraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Notch scam artist one.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

stand THE FUCK bakc
I got an idea for the premise
>humanity finds a nebulae shitting out tons of energy for some reason
>colonize it for free energy
>turns out it's actually another universe with slightly different laws of physics bleeding in to our own
>everyone evacuates the zone as soon as their ships start CLANGing
>everyone migrates outside other than STALKERS looking for extrauniversal anomalies, people stuck on planets (because planetary gravity negates the fissure), people who were too poor to escape, scientists, and the /egg/men
>/egg/ somehow creates a portable anomaly negation device out of annoyance
>they don't understand how they built it so they can only accidentally reproduce it
>they refuse to leave because they're getting loads of money selling platinum from the asteroids in the nebulae

more /egg/ tv:

>On one season the /egg/men become divided by the very accomplishments they've made:
>The planeters who have built huge cars and battery arrays for extended CLANG with trees
>The rockmen who have developed their own esoteric language due to CLANG PTSD; have a unique word and gesture for >implying
>The stationguys who have seen pistons, rotors and grid clipping beyond human comprehension

>Plot follows these factions arguing over trivialities and such
>The bigger conspiracy and mystery is a minor group consisting of members of all factions, who are going to build a station out of many asteroids, but also with pistons and rotors, and cars. Maybe even a tree or two.
>The planeters want to stop this as the station starts to resemble a planet, both in physical but also in cultural form
>A ragtag team also consisting of all factions is loosely formed and their mission is to blow up all struts that connect the asteroids into a single grid
>The mission goes south due to autism related, shit opinions, and not all struts are completely destroyed
>Asteroid station unfolds itself into a tree graph and a need for space trains moving using the struts is conceived inside some madman's helmet
>The season ends with promises of more autism with the announcement of the "Space Train faction" coming to live in the next season

It's a road-tripping game aboard a broken-ass Eastern European car, that you constantly have to tinker and fix up. I guess it could count as a very Mechanic-lite game?

If it isn't, is there a general more suited to it? Because I really love the fucking thing

Limited replay value.
After learning how to play it's not that interesting setting up another initial science potion factory.
Later, with blueprints, laser crawling, and solar power, the game becomes too simple.
Aliens are very dumb and easy to hold off and beat.
I would pirate it and see how much you can get out of it before dropping 25 steambucks.
>>
>>169510798
Factorio is very gud, it is what it is, and there isn't much bas to say about it.
It's pretty solid, though updates are oddly slow at times.
The fact that they're simplifying nuclear reactors from their original design docs for the retards is the only bad thing they've ever done I can think of off the top of my head.

Modding community is bigish, and the game has full documentation, so modders basically have the same capabilities as the devs.

They've got a free demo, and it's easy enough to pirate.

It just has a low replayability without mods or ramping up the difficulty to insane levels

quality boarding craft of the nature you're after would require both better damage and deformation sims, as well as a better variety of structure/material designs, i.e. smaller voxels and more durable materials.

In these days where demos are for the most part absent, it's perfectly acceptable to use piracy as a preview.

Adding that smug attitude makes you all the more deplorable.

>logistics bots for transport
Like, player transport or item transport?
>>
>>169558474
Logistics bots are item transport that basically makes conveyors and if you're a shitter of shitters, trains, redundent because they can handle everything, and they just work.
They're not even that endgame.

Things that just work are terrible in games like this, defeats the entire point of them, stuff that you need to make work is better.
>>
>>169558474
Item transport. Logistics bots carry items between logistics chests/the player, and construction bots build things.

Everyone's got their own way they like to play, by "cheating" they mean "it's more fun for me to use only belts." Just do what you think is fun. At least play around with them to get a feel for how it works, then decide if you want to use them or stick with belts. Belts will always be faster though, much higher throughput, bots are mainly convenient and good for transporting small amounts of rarely used materials.
>>
>>169558665
>>169558838
Oh, I thought they meant they could use them to fly around. I only use logibots inside my base(s) to transport end materials between factory clumps and to resupply/rebuild walls/turrets. I feel it's a reasonable compromise.

Trains are fun as fuck, though, why would people not want to use them?
>>
>>169558665

Going technically faster than light is possible, though.

That's not how it works.

I remember reading a story about exactly this, except it wasn't so retarded to assume time would go backwards. Basically it was that funny old equation, where every step you take is half as large as your last, but time travelled normally as viewed by those on the ship. They all went event-horizon on eachother and never emerged from the warp, if memory serves.

That's exactly what I said.
If you're on a ship that isn't distorting space to get round c, you'll still perceive time normally.
You will just arrive before you started.
It doesn't go backwards, it goes so slow that compared to other frames of reference the direction of the flow of your time is reversed.
It does this because c must be c, from all frames of refernce.

This is part of relativity, spatial fuckery accompanies it, but I don't remember the specifics of it.

A good boarding ship needs equal parts good design and good piloting skills.

I would suggest having hull breaching prongs that'll depressurise the ship with landing gear flush with the hull so you can securely hook on and cut through using a shaft in between the prongs.

The key is to not force your way through the ship like a horse in heat and just hit hard enough to puncture and lock onto it.

You could simulate an orbit by attaching a rotor to a planet, then a massive arm extending off the surface all the way out to your ship and set it to rotate so that your ship moves at orbital velocity.

Not this shit again. When will you physicians learn that it's just a natural result of gravity being a thing?
If you want to orbit planets in spergies, then you need only increase the speed limit.
Alternatively, use thrusters or a gravity drive to reduce the effective acceleration towards the planet.

How does a merge block malfunction?
When I last touched spergies, merge blocks were only risky when merging or unmerging.

>You might think that living north or south of the circles where the dark cone first intersects the world would merely result in a curious phenomenon where the light vanished around noon, with this odd midday blackout growing longer the farther north or south you went. But this is where the geometry starts to bite. Near the sun’s dark cone, the distance from the surface of the world to the surface of the sun comes ever closer to zero, and the intensity of solar radiation striking the ground becomes extremely large. Standing in a place where this happens, even briefly, twice a day, would be fatal. So these circles mark the boundary of what is known in the novel as absolute summer: those regions where the distance to the sun is sometimes zero, and there is no possibility of surviving.

I can sort of have an idea of 4 or more spatial dimensions. You know, if 3d space is an infinite amount of 2d planes stacked on a third axis, then a 4-space could very well be 3-spaces stacked on a fourth axis, and so on.

But having more than one time dimension? That shit fucks with my mind.

No. Entanglement is not some kind of connection that pierces space. It is evidence of the common history two particles had before. And you "manufacture" them by literally filtering out all the other pairs, that do not correlate with each other.

>Couldn't you basically just manufacture hardwired units with mutually entangled particles in each one
Sure, you could do that easily.

But that still won't get information faster than light, since you can't get meaning out of measuring the results of entanglement without knowing the states of both particles. Which you'd have to transmit at or below C.

it's important to note that there's a hollow cylinder running through the entirety of the station where ships dock, with the entrance being the mail slot on the left side

the space inside is about the width of the outermost circle around the mail slot

but yeah that design is nonsensical for a space station and was only put in because of nostalgia purposes

You mean fusion boost fuel? Extremely worth it, it not only directly adds energy to the explosion, but it releases loads of neutrons that more efficiently detonate the rest of your fission fuel. I'm not entirely sure what difference there is between normal and nano, I think nanothermite has smaller granules and burns faster because of that.

Hey guys, I'm new to Factorio.

After completing the tutorial, I went on to start the New Hope campaign. However, the layout of the first base sort of baffled me, Did they make it that weird and inefficient on purpose? It just confused the hell out of me, at the end it looked like a Frankenstein monster with how many patches and fixes I had to apply on top of it to get what I wanted done

I managed to get the first mission done in like 2 hours 30, which I'm aware is probably a fuckton more time than what was actually needed

I'm wondering if I should continue this campaign or just jump straight to free world

All the rod logic itself for this thing should be complete now.

Things to add

I constructed all the rod logic for this thing without actually testing all the moving parts. I just used mental manipulation to shift stuff around to see if it should work, so if I construct the cams and find out I've made any significant mistakes they're gonna be a real cunt to fox.

Okay, all the rod logic is complete... so I'm scrapping the entire thing and starting again.

Now that I've got this new memory system the old one is pissing me off and it's really irking me.

Pic related has basically just been a weeks long exercise in theorycrafting.

Now the only significant technical hurdle is how to cycle and read out through the 8 different bit positions in the registers, but hopefully the new bistable latches should simplify that.

I'm not too mad though because I learnt a fair bit from this which I can apply to the next version. It's like I'm progressing up an infinite tech tree but all the techs are hidden until you have a problem that needs them.

New design of memory latch refined.

Blue horizontal rods are the input
Green vertical rods are pushed upwards. Depending on whether the input is 0 or 1, the red squares flip the latch 180 degrees to the left or right.
The latch is attached by a hinged bar to another rod above. If the latch the flipped to left, then the rods above move 8cm upwards, unblocking a gate where the memory is read out.

New layout so far. New memory latches seem like a much more hassle free way of handling things, but they take up about twice as much horizontal space. I don't mind too much, I'm not going for compactness.

There. Rebuilt using the new memory in a fraction of the time it took to make it originally.

4 main parts
Register 1 and 2 store the two numbers to be added or subtracted. The input is 8 bits at a time, but the output is addressable, only reading one bit at a time depending on a 3 bit code.
The adder subtractor reads from registers 1/2 one bit at a time, adding/subtracting each bit and storing the carry/borrow after each operation, then moving onto the next bit. My original prototypes had multiple adder/subtractors lined in sequence which could input the two 8 bit registers at once. This however was way more space and CPU intensive. Using this method means one adder/subtractor can do the work of 8, with the only extra geoms coming from the addressing system, memory latch and whatever control architecture I need to cycle through the addresses.

Register 3 is the results register. Instead of a bulk input and addressable output, it has an addressable input and bulk output. Reg 3 takes in 1 bit at a time (the result from the adder), stores it in it's first memory slot (000) and then cycles to the next address (001).

Register 3 can also input back into register 1 or 2 if you need to keep the results via a 1-way pulling rod.

I haven't put any of the control systems or cams in for this yet, but this is a solid starting point.

Fuck, that's enough for now. Good night /egg/

The accumulators weren't filling up.

As it turns out, someone hit an electricity pole somewhere, disconnecting the networks, and now we have an enormous overkill of panels and accumulators because we didn't realize that THAT was the problem and instead built more power production.

Sad!
Just build projector and a welder, then hook it up to your cargo.
Come back ten minutes later when the thing is finished.

Alternatively, just use a tugship, and pull the blueprint through a wall of welders.
Of course, either solution will bring simspeed to its knees, but that's a different problem entirely.

You haven't been playing for long enough to deal with that bullshit.
Just so you can have an idea, just imagine that tomorrow, after months of inactivity, suddenly FtD has an update that nerfs railguns. Now they can't shoot more than twice a minute, their range disminishes to 1.5km, can only fire special railgun bullets and consume three times as much power than before. Because balance :^). Oh, and CRAMs get buffed because those are not powerful enough

But you get used to the changes, you make new designs, and keep having fun to the game. And then the same thing happens again

>"ok we're sorry we're going back to our original vision for the game" update
Please tell me this will be a thing one day. I've been gone a long time, it might give me reason to go back.

I managed to scrape some fun if not much out of each terrible stage, from the 'lasers have limited range but plasma has unlimited range! Ha-ha, you can't shoot bombers!' to the 'Lol, thrustersticks' to the 'lol, more thrustersticks' to the 'Okay, medics. You need medics.' to the 'Everything depends on your mega not being a literal toilet.' to the 'Okay, it's megas, but we make the megas out of paper and medics support them now.' to the 'Expecting some cute robot? Too bad, it's thrustersticks again!' to the 'Also brickbots' to the 'Okay, If you lose.. You lose all of your money.' to the 'Okay, we have boss battles, except you'll never win.' to the 'Okay, we have boss battles, except it's 1 tier 10 against 10 tier 10s.' to the 'We just released crystal tower shoot things! Annnnd you lost a match in literally under two minutes to a single person because nobody defended.' to the 'Also, mega parts that are fucking useless' to the 'Remember medics? Now everyone regens to full instantly.' to the 'Okay, let's nerf glass.' to the 'What if we made a block with the same armour and costs... But lighter because it's a triangle???' to the 'So we made a new anti-air weapon but the fliers are wrecking the ground bots with it' to the 'We nerfed tesla again, lol' to the 'Also, thrustersticks.'

The clock is actually a pretty simple concept. See, in computing you generally want things to progress in a known manner. One great way to do that is to set up synchronicity, such that everything happens at once.
The clock is a tool to achieve that. You build a memory component so it can only change its stored value when the clock transitions from a 0 to a 1, and you therefore get all your memory updating at once with no worries about "will this register update before this other register and thus pollute the input" or "is this register going to be listening when this other register is sending valid data".

Look up the RISC pipeline for basically the most important application of clocks. In these diagrams you usually see a series of dividing lines, which represent 'planes' of latches tied to the same clock signal. The combinatorial circuits in between the planes gets new inputs on every clock pulse, and have until the next clock pulse to stabilize their output so that the next plane can read it. Barring heat/power concerns, you'd run the clock just slowly enough that the combinatorial circuits have time to work.

But I need 4 rod movements to add 2 numbers and store the carry. If one rod movement = 1 second, would I make the clock cycle 4 seconds or 1? And if it's 1 second, how do I make it so the correct rod is moved on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th second?

The feeling of riding a bike is nothing compared to a car, both regular bicicles, or a motorbike (have a 150cc enduro now)
On heavy traffic you go like nothing, if there is shit in the way, you can find another way.
With a car you are stuck, and cant do shit because soccer moms with their SUV are too retarded to drive properly.
Then doing DH or jumping or that kind of suff is good.
But doing route biking is kinda boring, asides from dangerous, and you spend lots of money into carbon fiber bikes that breaks just by using them and homo spandex to gain 0.01% of speed to to then joing another bunch of fags and go and bike for 50 miles, without saying anyhing because muh breathing rithm, avoiding the most littile shit on the road because almost no tire and because induced prostate cancer, to grow hate for everything else on the road because imma special carbonflake and muh bike cost more than your daily drive econoshitbox and i dont have ensurance for it.
They are the worst of all bikers.
If i buy a street bike, will be a CBR or something that can pass cars like they are standing, and die in it, maybe this year ill get the money and feel actual speed.

Already got the latches set up in 2 registers that feed into the adder, so I don't have to worry about that at least.

I think I see. So the minimum clock cycle I can use is the time of the longest component in the chain.

Thanks anon

It'd be a 4 second clock. A clock cycle is measured as a complete cycle. For digital clocks, that's from 0 to 1 to 0 again. For your clock, it'd likely be revolutions of a gear or something.

You'd have just one cog somewhere that was spinning however fast, and you'd get every single clock signal off that one cog. In your case, you'd need to have the movement of the clock trigger each successive rod movement at the right time.
>>
>>169766735

Exactly. Or if you have multiple components that feed to each other before getting stored in a latch, the sum of those delays.

Also for anyone who plays ChoDE, just got my hands on the new capacitor system for rail/coil guns, and here's my best offering as of tonight. Has anyone done better, if so how? So far this outpreforms the in-game sniper coilgun, and while it's slug is only a fifth the weight more of them land on target from further away with greater frequency.

Capacitors are more or less required now, Hafnia seems to be the best option overall. For small capacitors 100 nanometer seperation seems to be best, with the ideal seperation growing larger with the capacitor.

I've yet to see a railgun exceed 50% efficiency, I've gotten coilguns to go up to ~95% but only with very low power and high projectile mass.

Alpha 6.0 will be focused on gameplay improvements and the survival aspects of the game. We will introduce oxygenated rooms, different player armors (each with its own characteristics and upgrade possibilities), environmental hazards (heat / cold, radiation, acid rain, etc), AI controlled vessels on planets, more diversity in AI enemies and much more.

>Given the content and scale of the Alpha 6.0 update, we decided to have a longer development cycle as usual. Thus, please do not expect the Alpha 6.0 release before 4-6 weeks (we are aiming for a release in the 2nd week of April - but this may be subject to change). >this is his ONLY (one(1)) question
>tfw anons don't even care if its a good game anymore, as long as you have to deal with some buggy, laggy, poorly thrown together netcode its all good

Can /egg/ out engineer nazis to make a more complicated killing machine?

>shit that never happened: the paragraph

Jesus christ they could have at least made it a little believable than TEN GORILLION VOLTS BURNING ENTIRE BODIES TO LITTERALLY NOTHING BUT A FEW ASHES THAT WERE RELALY SMALL NO REALLY!!! THEY KILLED THEM BEFORE BURNING THEM TO ASH BECUSE REASONS GOOD GOY!@!!!!11

Say, for example, the batch was submerged in kerosene and lit on fire, but that would have taken too much fuel for the ailing wehrmacht.

Perhaps some function of an oversized oven, where gouts of flame were shot into a room using furnace burners, but this would have taken quite some time to cause a perfect charring to ash.

Hell, I'm not even a /pol/tard and that whole page seems like bullshit.

Can make more efficient.
>make jid load stuff into glorious Antonov
>load jid too
>when flying lower loading ramp
>throw jid off the plane
>arrive at destination
>make new jid unload the plane
>repeating of procedure
Remove jid and deliver cargo, same time. Is very efficient!
>>
>>169776536
But you have to kill them first or else you'll end up with living ashes. You wouldn't want that, would you?

It's a lot harder to kill the ashes because they become so many and all are alive so you have to kill them all one by one and it takes forever. Easier to just do it all at once before.

I swear to fucking god I've had to deal with this in dwarf fortress before.

Can we at least shitpost related things?
Like what do we know about Skywanderers so far?
Crossout going OBT when?
Did Skubmade update really improved performance?
Where is Ced?
Is /egg/station host alive?
Will we have another SS13 serb anytime soon?
Why Mark, Marek and Nick aren't gassed yet?
>>
>>169788405
>know about Skywanderers so far?
The Dev is a frog. Good luck with that.
>>
>>169788405
We had a SS13 serb?
shit, would've liked to have been there
even though I've still barely played it

Also seconding the Skywanderers thing, shit looks pretty dope.
>>
CHODE is fun like doing homework is fun.
>>
>>169789158
Indeed we had a /egg/station serb that was running for... six months, I think. And it had singulo up and running the whole time. Absolutely and perfectly stable. Now that's fucking engineering.
>>169789254
Masochism is an acquired taste.
>>
>>169789320
I feel like on /egg/station every round would be that one round where the engineers decide to do some horrifying experiment

And it would actually work
>>
>>169789320
Oh, I'm an engineer, I enjoyed doing homework.

I just find the interface problematic. It's just minimalist enough that I want more plane detail. It's difficult to be precise.
>>
>been looking for a flowchart software

>already have it installed

>>
>>169789665
That's pretty much how it was, at least from the screens and greens.
Autism is one hell of a drug.
>>
>>169790103
>tfw you were looking for a software that you already had installed

At least you know how it's called, i had a program like paint installed, but that let you paint with hexagons, traingles and other stuff, and i don't remember it's name, or where i installed.
And google searching hasn't aided me
>>
>>169790772
Something with custom brushes maybe?
I'll take a wild guess and suggest SAI, Photoshop, Gimp(?) and/or any other drawing software that supports custom brushes.
>>
>>169791234
No, it wasn't one of those three, although i've been using Gimp as a substitute.
>>
>>169789254
CHODE is fun like using an advanced calculator to build superweapons is fun.
>>
>>169791510
That /does/ sound pretty fun. At least for a while.
>>
>>169790194
How long ago was the serb up? Any interest in reviving it?
>>
>>169791632
~6 month give or take. Single round.

I want you to take a step back and let it sink in.

Single. Round. For half a year. With singulo powering everything.

>Any interest in reviving it?
You bet your sweet plat there is interest in reviving it.
But who's gonna be the madman that would host the new serb?
>>
>>169775220
egg games have only real competitive gameplay nowadays. You must be efficient, elegant and smart to be really good in engineering, not just good at tapping button challenge for monkeys.
>>
>>169791936
who would want to put up with all your ss13 circlejerking when it has its own general?
>>
>>169790772
That is like the worst sequence of keywords for search.

This shit did come by after a while
http://grid-paint.com/
>>
>>169791936
Oh, to my knowledge SS13 serbs gain momentum until they achieve some sort of catastrophic server failure singularity if you let them go that long.

What brought it down?
>>
>>169792973
People stopped playing after a few days.
It was basically a passing craze, just like (eg)gmod, eggmade or the more recent empyrion affair.
>>
>>169792361
>This shit did come by after a while
It was very similar to that, thanks

Unless somebody let a plasma miner stay linked to H/E space pipes for a week before filling the plasma tanks, it'd have been out of plasma fuel within the first week of being unmaintained. We also had a bunch of solars, pretty sure they were the things doing the labor.

>>169792973
It started out as a tiny ass thing, just a shuttle in the void, and didn't grow a huge amount. As a result, there wasn't much overhead to start with and few if any players doing things that'd increase overhead.
>>
>>169772763
why did egg quit eggpyrion again?
