>>169461445
this is a matter of syncing the movement speed to the animation speed. you may also have a problem, where your animation suggests that the turtle moves at an uneven pace (more forward motion with each footfall compared to the passing step), while you move the turtle at a constant pace in code.

The playable area is around 100km x 100km on a 200km x 200km landscape for visibility reasons.

Most of the map is just dead space for level design reasons but it's nice to have flexibility and all the open space for other reasons.

I've still yet to add manmade stuff which is going to be one of the most time consuming stuff for the landscape.

Is that really the best way to go, /agdg/? How long does it take to learn C++ to the point where you can make something that functions?

>well it takes 10 years to become a master at any-

No no no, Im not asking about that. I mean how long until one has enough of a grasp of it to make *a game that runs*

unrelated side question: why isnt there a 3D equivalent of gamemaker? With all the little kids who want to make zombie games/ slenderman games/ COD knockoffs youd think that would sell like hotcakes.

Honestly this looks fucking good, I love it. Nearly jizzed my pants when you flew through that explosion.

>>169461445
Yup, the bobbing up and down is definitely what's missing. It also looks a bit like it just scrapes the floor instead of actually walking on it. Maybe you could try sticking the feet to the floor for a few keyframes.

Pic related, it worked perfectly with the previous patrick, now it fucks up. Probably has to do with me changing the number of frame for the animation. Not sure why it would cause a fuckup, but it seems it does. Time for another FBX export I guess.

How do games like TES and RuneScape handle armour modelling?

For instance if there is helmet slot, torso slot, and leg slot, is there simply a naked head/torso/leg model which gets swapped out with another model representing the armoured head/torso/legs when the player has one of those armours equipped?

I'm not sure if I should make the armor something that is quick to replenish (like enemies drop armor when killed) or something that you need to get from respawn points and other specific locations. Since its bulky it is difficult to protect it but if it were an item or something you could choose when to deploy it.
>>
>>169460276
That is the most stupid "solution" I have read.
>>
>>169478489
replensihed each time you get to a respawn point, like an estus flask perhaps?

>enemies drop armor when killed
if you want a fast-paced game, then this is the better way to go about it, it'll make players think about risking getting out of their safe zone to quickly grab a shield
>>
>>169478489
All comes down to what kind of game it is.

Is it prebuilt levels with a set of objectives and rooms to complete?

Is it randomly generated?

Is death punishable? Is the game difficult? Do you have to restart from far back?

These are all things to consider when giving the player an extra hit.

You can go the "doom approach" where the player gets outfitted with a shitload of gear BECAUSE hes about to be thrown into the meat grinder, or you can have it around checkpoints, which works kinda as a buffer for a player sucking, such as limited Estus Flasks in Dark Souls.

Third is to go Halo and have it regen on enemy death/over time and that encourages a fast gameplay loop that feeds back into itself, promoting going fast and being rewarded/replenished for it.

Game design is hard.

This new style does look a lot more generic though. It also bugs me that I'm using torches to light the dungeons (who keeps them lit? The skeletons?) but it just looks really good having a dungeon lit with torches. Can't argue with what looks best.

>>
>>169485260
What exactly are you talking about? I know there's a visual glitch right now causing issues when the camera is moved, and I'm not sure how to fix it...

But if you're talking about tiles not tiling seamlessly, these are placeholder.
>>
>>169485505
You'd probably need to do some work to make it fit the MonoBehaviour model but converting your code from Java to C# wouldn't be that big of a deal.
>>
>>169485564
<- this
the problem here is that opengl uses floating point numbers for texture coordinates, and sometimes rounds to the wrong texture

The answer here is to add 1 pixel padding to the side of each tile that looks like the opposite side, so when the texture coordinates fuck up you still get good tiling
>>

House Cleaner --[PROGRESS]--

Added a lot of small things to make the shooting feel better
-Enemies flash
-more blood
-Screen flashes on hit
-Bullet screenshake
-Different effects on walls, floors etc
-Camera scrolls with the cursor instead of being set on the player
-Chance for crit damage.

Changed how the slowmotion works
-Instead of it automatically getting triggered when you shoot enemis, you turn it on manually
-A big effect blasts through the arena to show it
-Background turns into a disco
-You can keep it going by shooting enemies but since the gain is small it forces you to go in, shoot and then have a exit plan in mind.

Next up is better sound effects, a music track and a shotgun enemy. Also thinking of making that the enemies have a chance to shoot different (harder) bullet patterns when you are in slow motion.

The only duration effects I've implemented thus far are ones dealing with "energy" (health, mana, stamina). So basically consumables only can add health, mana, or stamina.
More to come later.

I also know that I have to add things like crit chance and stuff.

>>169488131
Most items will have like 5 bonus effects tops; and will probably either have effects on physical or spell ratings, not both. I'm just doing it this way so I can test. Also I haven't decided if I want items to add only to Attributes (strength, vitality, etc) or to things like meele power, health, etc.
What I've mostly been focusing on is getting events in order so I can actually use the items.
I do UI work when I get tired of the nitty-gritty back-end deving.

For anyone interested, pic related is my rudimentary item editor window.
Changes are effective immediately because each item of the same type references the same readonly dataobject (the dataobject reference isn't changed, but the fields within it could be); I don't even have to exit play mode.

I've generated a few levels by setting my generator to act as if the tiles are 31x31 and 30x30, meaning he stick'd them closer together. They should cover each other, but there's the same amount of bleeding.

The thing is - The edges are flickering green, the wall texture, sa,e as before, but the walls aren't even generated under them and in most cases, nowhere near. I double checked.

Would you believe this is why I quit my last project? Unity is instant bullshit for pixelart.

I don't know how you would achieve that in Unity without shaders. Here's some glsl:

>vec2 bleedBlocker = 1/(2*uSpriteSheetWH);
>vTexCoords = aTextCoords + bleedBlocker + (aSheetPos - bleedBlocker)*aVertPos

I left out some window-sheet conversion lines, but the idea is that if you have a 4x4 sprite at {1,1} you read the texture from {1.5,1.5} to {4.5,4.5} instead of {1,1} to {5,5}.

What? Just think about it. "50% of the lowest voted options pass to the next voting round." is the exact same as "50% of options removed".

Therefor, you're removing 50% of options of both highest and lowest. Therefor, it makes no difference where they are in the poll ranking. 50% of the entirety will disappear randomly.

>>169491595
>Therefor, you're removing 50% of options of both highest and lowest.
I think you are misunderstanding how this poll works. All lowest voted options get to the next round. Only the 50% of the highest voted will be removed. Since one is supposed to give votes to the options they don't like, at each round 50% of the most collectively disliked options get removed. Rounds go on and on until only 1 options remains - that is the least disliked option and will become the next jam theme.
>>
>>169491995
According to the poll:

>50% of the highest voted options will be removed when this poll ends. 50% of the lowest voted options pass to the next voting round.

Under these rules, 50% of both top and bottom will be removed. It makes no difference.

>>169492049
Okay, I get it now. Where you wrote "since 50% of the highest voted options will be removed..." it should be "the highest voted 50% will be removed" and "50% of the lowest voted options..." just doesn't need to be there.

As it is, it reads as if 50% of the highest voted options (ie a quarter) are going to be removed and 50% of the lowest voted (ie a quarter) are going to move on, implying that another 50% of the lowest are going to be removed.

>I haven't hosted a single jam up until now.
And it shows, hopefully you learned from your mistake and never do another one again.
>>
>>169492553
I posted earlier concurring with him, but actually it's not quite correct.
It is not statistically the same as "50% of the options will be removed".

Why?

Well because you're separating them into two different pools. That means that only a certain number of options can be removed from any given pool.

It's stupid to say 50% from each pool because there are 3 in each pool, but let's assume for a second that there were 8 options.

This would mean it would be impossible for 1, 3, or 4 of the lowest options to be eliminated, it can only be 2.
For the other pool, the same is true.
On the other hand, if you made it so 50% of all options will be removed, it is POSSIBLE for the 4 lowest to be removed, but not the 4 highest, and vice versa. It's also possible for other combinations.

Is what I'm saying making any sense to you guys?
>>
>>169490878
I have seen all the options getting a vote while voting myself, so yeah, there is someone doing that to fuck with the poll. I agree that the guy making it can bel is annoying as fuck sometimes, but the idea is working well and the themes taking the lead are way better than "lolis" or "milf"

so: would anyone like me to make them some pixel art graphics for their game for a reasonable price? I don't really have time to dedicate myself full-time to a project, but I can contribute on a per-piece basis... I specialize in tilesets and backgrounds but can do sprites

also if you're worried about consistency I can look at the existing art for your game and either modify it to match, or modify my own art to match.

if I get any serious offers I'll post some more of my work

obviously it would depend on the type of art, something like a 1080x720 pixel perfect background that takes weeks is quite different from a simple 8-bit platformer sprite. I'm an amateur so if you're wondering about pricing for hiring professionals sorry, I don't know

Hey, people, who would like to participate in the jam from this poll. http://poal.me/i2d87h

Someone defiantely has decided to shit inside our poll. It seems that we have to go a bit more private. Not entirely private. I will drop an email here. People who are interested in participating in jam and also interested in honest voting will have to send on this address and email and prove that they are real(as in not shitposters and not proxies) somehow. Devs with Tumblr can send me their Tumblr and I will contact them with my Tumblr to confirm identity. However, I am not sure how should I authenticate devs who don't have Tumblrs.

Devs with Tumblrs can contact me on this alias:

a gentle "p-please make your games varied!", which is what you're talking about, can be applied to a loli jam just as well as pong jam
a jam that truly promotes creativity has a theme that doesn't really allow you to make the game fit through just merely slapping a character somewhere
it must be pretty vague and leave you with questions

Concerning this jam:
http://poal.me/i2d87h
http://poal.me/i2d87h
http://poal.me/i2d87h

At this point in time, we have a 3rd option aswell.

Since the themes are not too shabby, the jam's theme will be all of them. More specifically:

>Choose freely between any of those 6 themes. An entry to this jam has to be themed after at least one of those themes. Winner will be the one who can incorporate as many of those themes into one's entry.

>>
>>169500290

>>
>>169500176
I think you have it backwards.

The protagonist would know what the items in their inventory are, so wouldn't struggle with them. You might not be able to spell the name of something, but that doesn't stop you from knowing what it is. However, when it comes to something like a letter from someone, or when talking to an NPC, they would struggle to understand, and this could be reflected by misspellings in in-game conversations and written content.

I've had this idea for a game in the back of my head for a year now so I've decided to get unity and get to work. I already know javascript for my job so its a matter of learning how to get the different global variables from unity into my scripts.

I'm aiming for a single player linear room-clearing FPS.

I have gamemaker pro that I got last year on humble bundle for 1€. How do I get started? Tried some tutorials back then but now I want to do something interesting.

I tried to do something at one point but I'm too retarded on choosing sprite sizes and room size, any standards here where to begin? Also does it matter if for example the placeholders are 32x32 but I would end up changing them to 325x43 or whatever size i want or need.

Whats some easy and short project to make to get started?

I suppose what I was getting at is that while she might struggle to remember what a helmet is called (and that might affect e.g. her trying to buy one from a merchant), I'd think she'd be able to remember things like "this thing goes on my head to protect it". While that's fine when it's a thought on your head, I suspect it makes for a cumbersome user interface, and using "helmet" as shorthand would be better: the player knows what a helmet is used for, the protagonist knows what it is used for too, and displaying "helmet" is an efficient way of conveying that.

On the other hand, the USB stick is a really interesting example, and I think showing her lack of understanding by labeling it incorrectly in the inventory is a cool idea. Perhaps simple things show up with the correct names/spellings, but more complex ones don't? Meh, it's your game anon, good luck!

Why are we spoilering this?

Slightly spoilerish I guess since I don't intend to fully explain it in game. I want players to realize it based on the way other character talk to the player character as well as other little hints like that. I'm going to keep considering going with icons or doing something like correcting the names over time as other characters say the words or explain things.

Only body language and an instrument she picks up. The letter is read by another character who talks to (commands) her over radio. I probably should be displaying the portrait or at least the name of that character in the description box to make it clear.

>with wrong labels and super-pixelated graphics, how is anyone going to know what those things are except by trial and error?
This is a good point. It sounds like even if I go ahead with this labeling system I still need readable icons or to tone down the mistakes.

Honestly, its worth just learning the programming.
With Game Maker you can get by with relatively simplistic code, but drag and drop is like forcing yourself to draw with crayons.

Shit, thanks for your blunt and honest reply. I don't think this stuff is for me at all. I remember back in the day really getting into RPGMaker 2k and 2k3 and that stuff was actually pretty simple and effective though their event/variable system. I stopped when the ruby language was implemented because I felt like not learning it was limiting myself.

Everyone here who's used drag and drop and then moved on shits on drag and drop because of its limited utility and comparatively cumbersome nature (for those who already know what they're doing).

On the other hand, its only purpose is to allow users to dip their toes into something they may have practically zero experience with by making the process more explicit.

I don't know whether I would've ever pushed through the initial difficulty curve of being first introduced to programming if I'd gone directly to GML, it's just too abstract for some beginners.

I dunno where you are in the learning process but I can say from experience that drag and drop served me well enough to start; it's the pacifier you're supposed to use while you cut your teeth for programming, and like a pacifier you're meant to abandon it as soon as you can.

Is it normal to have a majority of no votes on Greenlight? Feels pretty bad.
>>
>>169510937
because your normals are inverted

I've never 3D modeled in my life (not pretty enough) but I'm gonna go ahead and guess surface normals are fucked.

Yeah, the pipeline is really solid. It's no longer XNA for linux and mac. It's superseded XNA

I'm off to the lab.

Why is cross-compiling to Windows such a miserable fucking experience?
>>
>>169510997
I doubt many people browse greenlight casually. I only ever vote for stuff when devs I'm following post a "we're on greenlight please help" post.

So make one of those and I'll help.

Choose any option besides the cross genre option. Check back back in a little while. See that the options that are not the cross genre one have the exact same amount of votes, again. This has been going on for few hours now.

>why does the shitter favor it?
Unknowable. A shitter autistic enough to proxy vote the same poll for several hours clearly indicates that his goal is to just shit up anything good for no particular reason whatever.

But lets not simply whine. We have got this far. Lets find a way to follow this through using some other alternative which the shitter can't shit. I have proposed several, think of something too.

Woops, misread the fuck out of that.

The graphics and the colors especially are fairly bland, in my opinion. That could be a reason not many people vote yes.

I voted yes though because I think your game looks like it could be good.

Change your logo. The combination of pixel-thin borders and your character is offputting. mixels reee

>>169512283 is right, you use the most basic and generic color palette. (grass is green, water blue, trees are ........). Looks like a distillation of rpg graphics, in a bad way. The nice thing here is that recoloring IS possible if you want that. Either use a filter in the game, or go through all your sprites (there might be a tool for this). Films have a single person in charge of colorizing for a reason.

Good luck!

You used to get a few retweets/likes on your twitter, what happened? Maybe ask followers (if you have any left) to leave a comment on the page. Maybe if people see comments, they're more likely to leave one themselves.

You'd probably have gotten a few (you)s if you posted here.

IMO:
Writing looks like it sucks.
Art style isn't that good. Sure, better than anything I can do, but that's irrelevant.

Your youtube page doesn't have any extra videos describing your game systems or anything else, which for the 1 in 100 people mildly interested in finding out more, looks bad.

Then again, according to Googum, the vote ratio is irrelevant and you'll eventually filter through anyway.

* The thumbnail is purple for me
* The difference is huge on my nice main monitor and a lot smaller on my crappy old side monitor
* It was blue in photoshop
* But it appears purple in my software renderer (I somehow hadn't actually noticed)

Conclusion: Probably something to do with colour profiles?

Plus, if rush hour jam or whatever it was called is relatively successful I'll consider organizing regular mechanic focused jams
