Discussion Topic: How the fuck did Gaara keep doing the insane, incredibly powerful jutsu that he did AFTER Shukaku was extracted? It was shown that the Absolute Defence was because of his mother's love, not because of the Tailed Beast, so I don't have an issue with that continuing to work. I have an issue with the ridiculously powerful jutsu and sand movements that he ONLY could've created with the assistance of Tailed Beast-levels of chakra.

Shukaku was removed from Gaara, and never put back in, but his power never dropped, even after the removal of a being that provided about 98% of his incredible chakra capacity.

Well yeah, the Falls of Truth reveal the darkness in your heart, which is Step 1 to taming the Tailed Beast, since at the time, almost all of the Beasts were universally pissed off at humans, and would capitalise on any evil in a person's subconscious in an attempt to subvert their will - Kurama does it in the fight against Pain, where he uses Naruto's rage at Hinata's injury to go "Hey Naruto, wanna fuck this guy up? Let me do it", and Naruto just sorta goes "Yeah alright".

Like yeah, it IS possible to make peace with a Tailed Beast without the Waterfall of Truth, but you need to have Izanami-levels of introspection to recognise and come to grips with the evil within yourself. Without the Waterfall of Truth, you'd need to actively recognise and accept part of your own weakness, and acknowledge that it doesn't control you. That might make the subconscious fight against the Tailed Beast harder, since you haven't 'defeated' your evil, but you know it exists and won't allow the Beast to use it against you.

I know I said I wasn't going to do the summary, but psyche you thought wrong. Just was super lethargic yesterday.

We picked up where we left off, with the team, and Naruto, on the way to Kirigakure. After walking for about half a day - and passing the border into the Land of Noodles - the group passed through a clearing, and three men step out of the woods. Their weapons looked pretty beat up, and their clothes were sketchy as fuck, but they appeared to know what they were doing. One of them got right to the point and demanded their gear. Naruto looked rather surprised, and genuinely asked if they didn't know who he was. The bandits seemed a little thrown, but admitted that they did not. Renya decided to dick around, pulled out a kunai, and demanded the bandits money and valuable. The group had a bit of a chuckle, but the bandits were a bit thrown that nobody seemed to be taking them seriously. Naruto asked if they lived under a rock, and one of the bandits did admit that they lived in a cave. They slowly put the pieces together, and realise they're facing a bunch of ninja. Naruto says it's time for him to see what the team can do when there's no rules, like in the Chuunin Exams or War Games.

I'm not going to go into the details of the fight, because they seem to be the most boring summaries, and get the least responses. Needless to say, the bandits get the shit kicked out of them - no maiming, since I changed the HP system - and the last one ran away, leaving his friends unconscious in the middle of the forest. Renya half-jokingly said that the group should loot the bodies for money, but nobody really seemed to find it funny. Classic autistic Shimura humour. Because everyone's a bitch in this game, there were no deaths. Sasuke would be disappointed. Naruto, however, quietly spoke to Waniko, and said he was proud of her for understanding what he said so quickly and reining herself in, even in live combat like that.

After another few hours walk - and a short ferry ride - the group arrived in the Land of Water, and shortly after, Kirigakure itself. The group was met at the gates by a few Jounin, who explained they were to be the group's escort through the Village to the Mizukage's office. A couple of them nod to Fugetsu, who they recognise - or at least recognise the headband - and the group move off. The three out-of-towners rolled History checks, and since they all pass, noticed that what they learned in history class in the Academy isn't exactly indicative of how Kirigakure looks now - there's more security, people seem more upbeat, more safe. Renya, who rolled a nat 20, knew all about Yagura's reign, and that he was being controlled (although he thought it was by OG Madara, not Obito), and was able to more or less mentally plot the entire Kirigakure timeline from Yagura through to Chojuro.

The team eventually get to the Mizukage's building, which is less lavish than Naruto's, and are shown to the Mizukage's office. Inside is Chojuro (of course), but also Fugetsu's mother and father (Fuuko and Mugetsu), and his eldest sister and brother (Ungetsu and Sangetsu). The mum, dad and brother pretty much just nod in Fugetsu's direction, but Ungetsu breaks rank - and protocol - and moves over to give Fugetsu a big hug, welcoming him home. The parents are mortified at this informality in front of the Mizukage, and Mugetsu started to try to bring her back into line. Chojuro waved it off, though, and told him to leave her be. Fugetsu chided Ungetsu, saying that she might want to hold off while in the Mizukage's office.

Chojuro dove right in, saying that this was the 'dream team' he had heard so much about, saying that didn't look like much - apart from Fugetsu - but admitting that he did see them in the Exams, so he guess they earned their rank. He did take a dig at Arata, asking if he enjoyed his flight.

Chojuro then formally introduces himself as the Sixth Mizukage, and welcoming the group to Nami no Kuni and Kirigakure. The team introduce themselves as well, and Chojuro moves on, assuming that Fugetsu would like to know why he had been recalled to Kiri. He glanced at Naruto, who said that Chojuro should be the one to tell him. Chojuro stood up and grabbed a bundle wrapped in cloth that had been leaning up against the wall behind him. He put it on his desk and said he'd been thinking for quite a while, and considering that Fugetsu helped retrieve it, alongside the exemplary reports he had been hearing, Chojuro offered to induct Fugetsu into the Seven Shinobi Swordsmen. Ungetsu made a small sound of surprise, but covered her mouth.

Fugetsu seemed surprised himself, saying that he was kind of young, only just turning 14, and he didn't know if he could be a Swordsman. Chojuro shrugged and said Yagura became Mizukage at age 12 or something, and Kakashi because a Genin at 5, Chuunin at 8 and Jounin at 13, so age meant little in matters of skill. He also pointed out that Naruto saved that world at age 17. Fugetsu said that if that's what Chojuro decided, Fugetsu would do what he can to make sure he didn't regret it. Chojuro shrugged and said the decision wasn't his to make, but Fugetsu's - at the moment, it was more or less just a job offer.

He explained that Kiri has lost swords in the past, or they've been buried with their owners, and the sword Fugetsu and the team recovered was to be the first in a line of replacement swords. It was a bit on the heavy side, but he assumed Fugetsu would grow into it, and explained he was to wield Nenryōbō, or Fuel Rod, the Meltsword, if he accepted.

Waniko put her two cents in, and asked why Fugetsu WOULDN'T take it, since it's a cool sword and all. Chojuro agreed. Fugetsu said that he did sort of want to take the sword, and with another push from Chojuro, accepted the position. Chojuro seemed relieved, saying that he didn't actually have any backup in case Fugetsu turned down the role. Fugetsu suggested his brother Sangetsu, who was a better swordsman than him, but all that earned was a glare from Sangetsu. Guess he didn't like the thought that he was only a backup plan in case Fugetsu turned down the role. Makes sense, since he's been in Fugetsu's shadow his whole life.

Chojuro then lets them know that there's a ceremony that night, with the usual formality that would go along with it, and unfortunately for Fugetsu, it's not optional. He then asks if the rest of the Hozuki family could leave, as he would like to talk to the team in private. They acquiesce, with Mugetsu saying he'd like Fugetsu to come home sometime today, and to bring his team so they can meet them. Fugesu says he will, and the family heads out. Chojuro immediately sighs in relief and says he was glad that was over, and that he didn't select Fugetsu based on his family influence or lineage, but rather on his abilities and skill. Fugetsu said he knew, and was honoured that he had been chosen.

Chojuro chuckled and said he was on Fugetsu's parent's shit-list anyway, saying that the had kept trying to butt into his meetings about the potential candidate, seeing what was going on and trying to influence the outcome. He eventually snapped and basically (politely) told them to fuck off, because they weren't on the Kirigakure Council, nor part of Tokubetsu Jounin advisors. This got them to back down for a while, but Fugetsu said it likely won't keep them away for long.

I'm going to see if I can get Bink or E to do up like a decent sketch of it, but basically it's a greatsword - not as large as Zabuza's, but still wider than an average katana or western broadsword. It's gunmetal grey, got a Kirigakure symbol above the hilt, and have several lines running up the sword that appear to be transparent, allowing you to see, for lack of a better term, inside the sword. Currently, there was a slow-flowing, dark red liquid running through the lines. The hilt is silver and black, two and a half hands long, and there appeared to be two small cylinders attached to the back of the blade, just above the hilt as well, with bundled wires running from the cylinders to the transparent sections of the blade.

Fugetsu said it looked pretty awesome, and asked if it could give Chojuro's sword a run for it's money. Chojuro said it probably could, and that the people who worked on it figured out a way to safely cycle chakra through the blade, and keep it cycling. One of the cylinders converted natureless chakra to Fire Release, and then the second converted any light and sound from the Release into extra heat. It goes up the blade, chakra keeps going in, and in a few seconds, you have a blade that's hot enough to cut through rock, metal, buildings, trees, anything, like it's butter.

• Fire Release: Sunlight Lance – The user gathers Fire Release chakra in their fist, before applying Shape Transformation to mould it into a spear. The user then launches this at an enemy at blistering speed, either piercing them with scorching flames, or having the spear detonate on impact. This jutsu can be used in two forms. Both are rolled at -2 to the DC, and have a 50ft range:

Dawn Lance: The target takes 3d10 Fire damage and is launched back 20ft. If there are enemies directly behind the target, they can roll a DC15 DEX check to get out of the way. If they fail, they take 2d10 damage and are carried along with the main target. This only works with one enemy. If the target impacts with a wall, rock, or other sufficiently large object, the target or targets are pinned there and Restrained for the next two rounds, taking 2d6 burning damage each turn.

Dusk Lance: The target takes 2d10 damage, and any enemies in the eight surrounding squares all take 2d6 damage. The primary target is knocked prone and Stunned for its next turn; all surrounding enemies are knocked away from the blast 10ft in their respective directions and knocked prone.

• Fire Release: Scorched Sword – The user applies Fire Release to their weapon, increasing its damage and giving it a chance to set their enemy alight. The user’s weapon causes an extra 1d8 damage for the next three rounds. If the target fails a DC13 DEX check, they burn for 2 damage for the next 3 turns. Note that this cannot be applied to all weaponry – i.e. Nenryōbō, for example. The user can apply this jutsu to an ally’s weapon, if they are within 5ft. If this is done, the effect only last two rounds.

No, not that. By variety I mean that I would love to see some different approach than increasing powerlevels and all the cliches that we normally see in the genre. I know it is aimed mainly for teenagers who probably enjoy that, but I think it can be done differently. For example (and I know some people might disagree) FMA is an example of a nice middle ground, mild on powerlevels while still telling a compelling story.

No, FMA is globally recognized as a well-done battle shonen, but gimmick shonen tend to be harder to write, Jojo included. Fate is a good example of a gimmick battle series (technically seinen), but unfortunately Nasu has seemingly lost control and decided Bobmiya is the way forward. The fanfiction wars for it can still be good, even with absurd powerlevels.

It's actually aimed at preteens and early teens. Shonen (boys) refers to an age group from roughly 7-18, with more emphasis on the first half from 7-14. Seinen (youth / young adults) is teenager and young adult stuff, and generally implies 15-28 as its target audience (sometimes it also means for old farts, for whatever reason). The thing about Shonen is that it isn't literally a genre, all it refers to is a target demographic which is mainly determined these days by what it runs in. NGE is technically a shonen like DBZ, despite feeling like a seinen, while Crayon Shin-chan and Elfen Leid are both Seinen.
