Crates are pretty much pointless, yes.
You can still make okay-ish money with them but cars are a much more efficient use of your time and offer a much quicker return on your investment, as well as being more engaging to run missions for.

There's almost a straight road from everywhere to Davis. The location is in center and there's very little RDM in that area because Ballas will aggro if you do anything like that near them. They're literally just your bodyguards in that area.
