Flowey only fights Frisk the first time, he skips it every other neutral run. I'm not a fan of Frisk dying, mainly because they don't really have anywhere to hide. The underground is really tiny, and Sans has been stalking them from the start. They can't get away with it.

I headcanon that hybrid monster dust acts as a substitution for the power of a monster soul, just like all the monster souls substitute for the power of a human one. There's no evidence for it, but I like it because hybridization explains both how Frisk exits the barrier and the vector for Chara's survival and ability to take control of Frisk. Being a fan of Charrator also helps.

The original fallen child (fandubbed Chara) is pretty much the biggest plothole in the game. They have this really vague backstory that can interpret them anywhere from being a depressed fuckup to the next Hitler, and their decisions (and death) are what cause the events of Undertale to happen.

If you beat the game by proactively hunting and killing every single monster possible, they'll appear and go full meta, knowing all sorts of shit they shouldn't know if they were an actual character in the game. And that's the plothole. There's Chara the dead kid, and then there's Chara the "demon that comes when called by name" that destroys the universe unless you sell your soul to bring it back. There's no explanation for how they came back to life (only that they did when you fell into the underground), and there's no explanation on why they can break the fourth wall.


As an aside, the second biggest plothole is the Neutral run ending. The only way to escape the underground is to kill a boss monster and take their soul, but you fail to do that and yet apparently escape anyways. We were just talking about it right before you posted.

I can try to hit on it using very basic movie/game logic. No headcanon (Chara can reset and went crazy, Chara was a bullied child, etc) or at least as minimal as possible.

Chara died a horrible death (look up how eating buttercups affects the body. Its pretty fucking awful) and then was reborn only to die again. The game is really big on souls and for a child to have a terrible fate and then to die again is pretty solid grounds to create a cursed spirit. So while he wasn't a demon child when he died, he was certainly an angry spiritual manifestation that might have latched onto every child who fell into the underground. The Chara you meet at the end is demonic to a point, as he's been feeding on the evil energy you're creating by murdering everyone.

I dunno, it comes off as a cut and dry dead child horror cliche to me.

I always liked the idea that destroying the world is Chara bullshitting. At that point they have control over Frisk, so that might include their basic senses, with only the soul as an exception. Afterwards, with a little guilt tripping, they gain your soul and merely perform a regular reset, lifting the veil off Frisk's eyes.

Not to mention, even with minimal theories/headcanons, they were probably pretty assmad at Asriel for what they would believe to be betrayal over Asriel not going through with the plan. Since a lot of folklore deals with how dead people can be corrupted by strong negative emotions during death, that could also be an explanation.

If you skip through the idea that Chara has been 'in' every other child, you could still just roll with the idea that if they hated humanity while alive, they might resent trusting anyone now, so they'd always advocate for more violent approaches.

Funnily enough that is an argument for Charnarrator. Since the characters respond with their own font (Papyrus, sans) and their own grammar (Temmie) it is assumed that "Chara" has the spirit of Chara speaking directly to you. Also, if you type in Asriel, there is just an ellipse. Since "Asriel" doesn't exist (is Flowey now), it is assumed that is why there is no actual response for that name.

Just to nitpick before anything else, Chara's speech implies he only woke up when Frisk fell down. The reason for this might be because Frisk and Chara have the same color soul, it might be because their brother Flowey was crying out their name shortly before Frisk fell down, or maybe because plot convenience.
