Some would ask, how could a perfect Dev create a game filled with so much that is evil. They have missed a greater conundrum: why would a perfect Dev create a game at all?

None of you probably remember me from a year back, but I worked on this project with Unity for a while and got fed up how even basic stuff took ages to make. Got more time on my hands again and decided to give GMS a try and got this after just a few hours of work.

Changing how audio is stored so sound events (like hovering over a button, which sound it triggers, whether theres pitch variation) is read from a google drive sheet, so I can blaze through all the sfx I downloaded. Buttons will play a random sound each time, and if I like it I click a button and that match of sound event to specific sound effect file gets uploaded and saved. its maybe over engineered but typign shit out into notepad++ to keep track of which things sound good is for lamers

I've made it three times. I don't keep a detailed log on what I've done - or much of a log at all. Whenever I do make a log, it's made in the subversion repository I'm pushing to.

This present game I've worked on for about 2 months RE: Unity version. I started work on it more technically about 1.6 years ago.

Which is cuter, with or without eye outline?
>>
>>169158504
For the animation I have in mind, forward facing is probably fine. Originally the bugs had a much more dynamic posture, closer to a three quarter view, but I want them to be approachable from either side without the player having to potentially wait for them to turn around.

LOVE dev here, I'm going to used fused mode (what you're talking about) for testing
for the final release, if I can be bothered to do it and make it work, I'm going to get the LOVE source and add my source to it and compile the whole shebang into one program and however many DLLs I need
someone on the LOVE IRC reminded me though that people will always break into these things, which is true assuming they want to and know how
you can do whatever you want; unless someone knows what they're looking for it probably won't be that easy to extract the code, and the assets... they could always use screenshots and sound and video recorders and completely bypass any in-game protections

Got the first person view in. It's not perfect as the zoom in goes a bit wonky just before its full zoomed in, and the zoom out isn't perfect either. I wanted to also have it so you could only have a small viewing area when you go into first person view, like in Zelda, but when you fire a projectile like that it wasn't centered for some reason, but if I let the player have a 360 degree view, it works fine...So, I don't know. Maybe I'll just leave it like that, it's kinda nice being able to look around everywhere like that at once anyway.

Heh I just thought up a way a way to fix that zoom in/zoom out weirdness while writing this post. I'll do that tomorrow though.

I couldn't really manage to add any dithering that didn't look retarded to his body because I'm using an NES color palette and red pandas have a near pitch place body, only their backs, heads, and tails are brown/red.

I'm a musician and sound designer for small indie devteams, and I usually work for a small upfront payment and a cut of the profits.
It's hard to make devs value the job of sound design, usually. Most hobbyst devs don't even need/use/value it. They just care about music.
If you can make good sfx you're already above 60% of other music guys.

What is this called which is on pic related?

When you want to go to some direction and you sort of lean in into that direction?

I would like to implement something similar, but I lack the english vocabulary in this department (and in physics in general) so I don't know how to look up equations for this thing.

I guess this amount and the direction of the leaning will be calculated by the object's heading vector and the target's position vector. The greater the angle between them, the greater the leaning will be, I suppose.

>Where would you recommend seeking out teams in need of a sound guy
Anywhere where devs gather. I've had luck in rebbit, tigsource, and tumblr.
My first portfolio was grabbing random videos of video games, muting them, and making new sfx and music for them. That helps people know your skills.
Also, very important, most devs won't give you anything but "do kinda this" or "i kinda like this song". Ideally you should be able to pick the right music to game for a game without the dev input. Very important part. If you let them think of you as a tool they just give strict guidelines that you turn into music, you're not going to go anywhere. You need to be part of the team.

I'm actually taking a thee week trip to glorious Nippon. So I wont be around. But I will for sure submit to DD14. Then I'm going to a local indie event, the Sacramento Indie Arcade again. So I'm working to polish the first section of the game for that. So for DD14 there will be a more playable game where you can get a sense of what the whole game will actually be like.

I too thought that kenney' stuff was good, but when you start to really get into props and stuff you see how bland it can looks on a game.

I think his stuff looks good on single screen game or showcases but for a complete game it's just not enough.

I'm pretty happy with where I am now. It looks a bit like a coconut crab, but I can live with that.
The blacks are still crushed, but I don't want too much contrast on the shell or it'll obfuscate the horn.
And I'm not too worried about animation, as it only really requires one. Once I have the look down I can sort of just churn out keyframes.

There are some neat tricks that can only be done with realistic physics.

However, if you do decide to go down that route, you better couple it with an in universe explanation.

Use the following techno babble if you want:
>New generation of spaceship drives no longer use the primitive reaction-mass techniques to propel a ship. Rather, they circumvent the limitations of inertia and mass by bending bending the effects of mass in a very local space-time. The mass-nullifier generator, in essence, reduces the mass of stuff in its near vicinity. In space vessels, everything, but the engines themselves have reduced local mass. Engines have to mostly propel only themselves, since the mass-nullifier generators make the rest of the million ton hull weigh no more than a car. However, the generators require constant energy input to maintain the nullifing effect. If the energy input is reduced, the ship's hull gains back its mass proportinately. Since the amount of kinetic energy remains the same while the mass increases, the ship slows down as that same amount of kinetic energy is dispersed among more and more of mass.

There you go.
>>

Wow, thanks, anon!

To be more clear: here's a pic of the Millennium Falcon, which basically steers and leans with cycle physics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_and_motorcycle_dynamics). It's the usual way how we assume things move. As I understand this still applies if the object floats/flies withing the planet's gravitational reach, but it does not when we are in outer space. So if I stay "on the surface", it's supposed to be fine, right? And use different dynamics when the object goes into space?
>>
I'm making a game that parodies video games.

>>
>>169176012
WHICH ONE ANON
>>
>>169176852
To quote some guys from a previous thread:
Mock the fact that the demon lord you kill in the beginning (because he attacked your village or something) is a weaker creature than the kobolds you'll face 10 levels later.
>>
>>169176601
There is actually a much better explanation why a Millennium Falcon might want to lean like that.

If a ship makes a turn, people inside are pushed towards the side that is at the outside of the curve. To migitate the effect of being squished against a wall, the ship tilts a little in the opposite direction to make the outwards force go more towards the floor of the ship. Regular passenger airplanes do this all the time for passenger comfort.

The same could be done in and outside of gravity. In a strong field of gravity, a small tilt is good enough, since the gravity of the planet also affects the inertia vector.

However, in space, those "passanger comfort" tilts would need to be much bigger - like 90 degree big, since there is no help from gravity.

As a 1MA you really need to maximize your content to work ratio. Unless you want an extremely small but polished experience you'll probably want to look into procedural generation so you only have to worry about polishing the gameplay.

Enemy combat systems are coming along nicely.

The master enemy AI system simply tells enemies to do a few things ("Pursue and Attack", "Act while waiting to Attack", and pretty soon probably "Position for and do Ranged Attack"), and each individual enemy class interprets that command to do a number of things.

The Little Skull, for instance, can do a single, heavily-telegraphed melee attack which changes based on the weapon he spawned with. But while waiting to attack, he will also randomly hop in place, or strafe left or right. Right now his actions can't be interrupted (I haven't made any hit reaction animations for him yet so nothing overrides his attacks) which actually makes him more dangerous than he ought to be, but that change is coming later today, hopefully.

Also, Dixie can take damage, and can now die from melee damage with a separate animation. Mostly, taking damage is recycling the effects of dealing it, though the nuts-and-bolts are changed to Dixie's shards and the impact colors are different.

Hey, I resent the implication that Dixie's combat will be as boring as Nier Automata's.

More to the point, Automata is a cuhrayzee RPG, this is a cuhrayzee N64 collectathon. The core gameplay is very different.

Two years ago he had a phase where he would constantly post pictures of himself to try an become a local e-celeb. He's done it multiple times before. No one gives much of a fuck about anyone else here unless it's annoying them. No one does free publicity for someone else either. I'm 100% sure it's him trying to look like an importan agdg member for the new anons that might be browsing.

Progress:
>Added a new class "map_overlay", which will take over some of the tasks of the dreaded GodObject
I have never needed inheritance, but it seems that haveing to make multiple kinds of map_overlays will benefit from inheriting from a base map_overlay class. Fun times are ahead.

>Streamlined clicking on stuff in respect to map overlays
At least one polity is selected at all times. It defaults to player polity.
When clicking on an owned star, its governing polity is chosen first. If clicked again, the specific star gets selected. If an unowned star is clicked, the star is selected right away. When user right-clicks, the same thing is done in reverse. Enough right clicks will deselect everything and selecting player's polity.

It should come useful when I start conveying information through map overlays, since different polities can have different perspectives on things. And player should be able to analyse the map from other perspectives. At least I hope it turns out like that.

-------------------

Pic related is how the map_overlay handles clicks. I feel like I implemented it in the dumbest way possible. Any suggestions on how to improve it. It is a single function from start to end without the "def mouse_click(args)" part, since it didn't fit on screen.

Do any 'tycoon' games handle save files in a nice way?

Or do I just do the 'Enter a filename' for saving and then present a massive list of slots when loading.

Added diagonal shooting to the humanoid enemies.
They also take aim before shooting to give a hint.

I think I will update the player to also have 8 direction shooting even though I really wanted to avoid it because i have to make running animations for every direction.

There are some blind spots in these enemies though so I probably have to update it to 16 direction but I don't want to make the sprites so maybe I'll do something like flip between the two nearest sprites and have the bullet stream just go back and forth a bit there sort of like what happens in metal slug when the player aims upwards.

Adds some level of fun sure - but it's not the sole determiner like you've put it in your original argument ('prevents it from being fun').

If you want proof that some people just want 'the same thing, but different' over and over again just look to Hollywood or the 4X genre. Or the FPS genre these days.

Removed the hardcoded resolution and tried HD for a laugh. Turns out 1080p software rast performance leaves something to be desired; who would've thought.

Something is /still/ slightly wrong with the projection; I'm multiplying the fov by a magic number which seems to "fix" it in that it matches Blender, but there's still something I'm missing.

GLFloat == float on everything ever and realistically always will do. I would just use float for readability's sake. The only exceptions would be if you are programming for really strange environments (J2ME dumbphones?) and in those scenarios you would already know what you need/have bigger issues to contend with.

Plus sometimes problems you're having during your dev process are best solved by stepping away from them to let your brain digest that shit.

Progress part deux: Major combat system advancements

+Enemies now play a reaction animation on hit; this has the added advantage of allowing their attacks and other actions to be interrupted by player attacks.

+"Smash" attacks now work. Normally, these send an enemy flying and make his rotation match his velocity (and have a special landing recovery animation). Also when an enemy "wants to die" (meaning it has 0HP; as in Mayhem League, enemies can be comboed even once dead), if hit with an attack specified as a Smash then you get a much more exaggerated hit effect and the enemy goes flying, bouncing off surfaces and other enemies, doing damage to itself and them. Technically the damage dealt to itself doesn't matter much since the enemy is dead, though I could see a use for it.

I'll probably make enemies drop their weapon immediately on being brought to HP 0 (rather than on the actual death animation) to avoid this sending weapons careening across the map.

+Air juggling now implemented; knocked-back enemies lerp to Dixie's vertical position when a series of parameters that ought to indicate "air combo" are all true. It works pretty well, though as with the similar system in Mayhem League it will take a LOT of testing to make sure it works as intended always (I can already foresee an issue with one enemy being juggled while another airborne enemy is nearby)

get involved in a project with really REALLY desperate individuals.

keep drawing more and more and these people will love you. they'll offer a ton of obvious advice *that is actually useful to you because you can't see how bad you are at that time* then you'll get better over time fairly quickly with a nice following. that and you will get experience working with a team and have something under your belt.

you would be amazed how fast you can get good at something for it to be mod worthy and then beyond.

sorry ill go into more detail for (You)

draw from life
draw from your imagination
if you are working digitally practice doing quick sketches and medium duration sketches of real life things

ie
30 second drawings
2 minute drawings
5 minute drawings
10 minute drawings

practice different shapes and objects. the quick sketches are very important because its less of a test of how fast you can go but more of how efficient you are with each line you create. and this will smooth you out and get you scratching less.

and go on /ic/ and make sure people criticize your daily practice.

if you dont bullshit yourself on what i just posted above you should see yourself improving daily

most people never improve in years

That's more a Patreon issue than a KS one.

With patreon it could literally be a financially bad decision to finish a game, whereas at least with KS you have a fixed amount of dosh which doesn't get bigger the more you draw out development.

Never doubted that for a second. Just trying to gauge the market, so to speak. Making sure I don't do a carbon-copy with my thing. There's just no comprehensive source for "games of category X" that includes indies spread across the bigger stores.

But I did post progress. You don't have to read to see it.

A related anecdote: I'm replaying Banjo Tooie (I just finished Kazooie) and several other N64 collectathons I loved for art and game design inspiration for Dixie and I wonder: why, as a kid, did I ever tolerate a game that forced me to sit through an ENTIRE opening cutscene with no skip option, that was like 15 minutes long, before I ever got to play?

As an adult I won't tolerate that shit, I'm surprised it's not something I remember hating about those games.

Progress time:
>new pilot sprites
>pilot can climb up ladders (needs a bit more work)
>changed the way pilot shooting works
>rewrote most of the pilot code because of spaghetti
>pilot is so big now that mecha is more like power suit
>HUD now differs too much from UI. Need to do something about it (it's boring anyways)
>working on new title screen.
>added new sfx
