Are there any species concepts or government ideas that just *fit* with certain modes of interstellar travel?

Like, I always see the Not!Elves (both creepy blue and hot fuccboi varieties) using hyperlanes because, you know, leylines.

Likewise, Fanatic Spiritualists always feel like they'd use wormholes.
>>
>>169136554
>I just want a comfy start that lets me expand a bit before I have to start fighting wars.

Here's how you do this.

Huge galaxy, 4-armed spiral, 8 starting civilizations, 1 advanced nation, random start.

You'll usually find your first neighbor by the time you fill out your Core Systems, and when you meet your first continued expansion is as easy as going the opposite direction (or just around them.)

Will Robots and genetically-modified versions of your primary race still be treated as xenos in the next update?

I find it kinda' weird that a Xenophobe empire would be okay with using Gene Warriors but not modifying its citizens to be conformists or adapt to different environments and shit.

Both Robots and Gene Warriors are by default made in their creators' image (it's fucking obnoxious that Paracucks couldn't even go through the effort of making unique synthetic models for each species,) therefore they're not xenos, but either the distilled combination of the strengths of the race or creations of that race's technological knowledge, which makes them a point of pride.

>>
>>169157438
Haven't finished it because of a mix of lel crash and the game turning into a massive slog that waiting longer would make me want to kill myself but basically

>find system with size 25 shielded Gaia world
>bringing down shield is nothing special
>planet has a lot of ruins covering it but also a perfect spot for a administration (as in it has 4 FE buildings around it)
>also insanely good planet modifiers and 4 obelisks that provide fucking insane research boosts and production
>get events to activate obelisks and boost research even higher
>after activating 3 (if I recall) obelisks shit happens
>insanely fucking strong ayys take over the system
>drop frontier outposts on steroids in nearby systems because fuck you
>if you have a fleet stationed there it joins the ayys, NEVER station your Doomstack in Arcadia
>after wiping them out and liberating the system get told to raze the obelisks

As I said, never made it to the end it because I underestimated how bad performance can get on a huge galaxy and just couldn't stand it. I started a new game on a smaller galaxy to see it and the other events through.

Mass Relays are not omni-directional. They can launch ships across immense distances almost instantaneously - but only with another Relay they're keyed to.

I do kinda wish there were Hyperlanes that let you travel completely absurd distances, like those ones that show up on the galactic edge sometimes but on the interior instead.

The half-assed explanation was that the Batarians were essentially Space North Korea/Pakistan.

They were a nuisance that many wanted to eradicate, yet weren't worth the effort of going to war with as they could theoretically mobilize a massive number of pirates/slavers/mercs that would cause more political headaches than bringing them to heel was worth.

I'm just starting out with Distant Worlds Universe and there are a couple of things I don't understand. I've gotten my empire up and running twice in different games before being eaten by worms/aliens, but 80% of the time I'm simply stuck right from the start. I built one small spaceport (removed all weapon parts from the design to make it cheaper), one exploration ship and one construction ship, but apparently I'm already bankrupt on resources because I am unable to even build a single mining station.
Is there something fundamental I'm missing here?
Also a secondary question; is there any way to view the total cost in resources of a design?
>>
>>169172990
First one, make sure all your ships (even the civilians one) have warp drive.
Second, don't build stations unless you have a very strong reason to do so (missing ressource, research bonus).
Third, tax your colony only barely enough to not be in the red.
>>
>>169172378
Just you. I play Spiritualists and 8/10 times I'm surrounded by materialists.
>>
>>169173678
>First one, make sure all your ships (even the civilians one) have warp drive.
Yeah I figured the extra speed would be important.

>Second, don't build stations unless you have a very strong reason to do so (missing ressource, research bonus).
I'm starting at pre-warp, in my experience the civil sector ships just loiter around until I build a mining station somewhere. How am I supposed to gather resources otherwise?

>Third, tax your colony only barely enough to not be in the red.
I've set it at about 10% to promote growth, should it be higher/lower?

I think I might have figured it out, the moment my spaceport is up and running the ai spams a ton of civilian ships (freighters, miners etc), that might be the black hole all my resources vanish into. I barely have time to build a single mine and get the early warp tech before I become deadlocked.
>>
>>169174194
Civilians mining ship will gather most of the ressources, but you need mining stations for at least fuel (check in the ship designer), and whatever you need more. You start with a stockpile of ressources, use your colony planner screen to see what ressources are in high demand.

>I've set it at about 10% to promote growth, should it be higher/lower?
Ideally, it should be at 0% for maximum growth, but in early game, you have no choice. Check in your economy screen if the civilian economy strives or don't, and adjust the taxes in consequences.
>>
>>169174283
I'd like to add, redesigning your mining stations to have a couple guns or missiles to defend itself will help fend off pirate escorts, they tend to run after their shields drop and they take hull damage.
>>
Is there a guide or tutorial or something for AOW3? First time playing an AOW game and I have no idea what the fuck I am doing. In game descriptions only provide so much info.

main questions:
What should I be prioritising in my cities?
Should I be building a lot of cities?
Are ranged units OP?
>>
>>169174576
Oh yeah, that too.
But in the very early game, shouldn't it be better to minimize the amount of systems to lower the costs?

>>169174705
Barracks.
No.
Kinda.
>>
>>169174724
Saves on how big your early fleet is, better than losing your first few mines early on as well. Also will help them against the lower tier space critters.Even just 2 weapons goes a long waay i my experience.
Also I got tired of my early escorts getting turned against me by pirates.

Is there any way to 'force' them to mine? It seems they just hang around doing nothing, or is that a result of supply and demand. As in pic related, I can no longer afford to build a mining station, long before my construction ship has reached the closest gas giant, even though there's plenty of resources on the moon right next to me and other planets not too far away.

Also in case you hadn't noticed, everything in Stellaris is environmentally-controlled and sealed off from the native habitat. Food production won't be an issue on an Alpine world for Continentals because the Hydroponics farm is in a bubble.

Its not about knowing that somewhere else is better, its about not having proper diet because all you can grow is some artifical nutrient paste shit because planet lacks suitable soil to grow anything. Its about living in perpetual darkness, jungle teaming with predators etc.

Its not about happiness, its about LIFE and survival. We cant dump 500m people on Mars not because they would be unhappy but because they would all fucking DIE.

>>169191892

>>
>>169192143
Well, it's poorly named.
I have the feeling that "influence" could just be replaced by "authority". Like, instead of using influence to beguile a scientist to join you, you forcefully enlist him.
But it's poorly used anyway. And why use influence to colonize anyway? I can understand when it's about political stuff like building outpost or hiring people, but to colonize?
>>
>>169192392
>And why use influence to colonize anyway?

Because it *is* all about the political stuff.

You need to hire new bureaucrats to handle the logistics of adding a new planet to the empire. You need to map out new shipping lanes, new telecommunications, new deals with neighboring empires to confirm that yes, you landed on that planet and yes, it's sovereign soil.

This is why it costs more influence to settle a planet halfway across the galaxy than one the next sector over.
>>

How long do you have to play in order to get this far?

Adding to this, it costs influence to suppress factions, change governments and enact policies, this is more than enough evidence that Influence is a representation of a nation's Bureaucracy or governmental administration.

>>
>>169193051
>I mean, if you take a neutral planet, there's no need to proclaim to the face of the world that it's yours.

Of course there is, you need to legitimize your claim to the planet and that takes pencil pushers. Colonists to the New World didn't come over and just set up shop without telling anyone, the governments of the day did everything from proclaim papal edicts to simply adding those lands to all their maps and actuarial tables.

And again, the price of colonizing the world next door is a pittance of 30 Influence, that *is* the game equivalent of "just settle that planet, everyone knows you own it anyway."

>>169192143
We can't colonise Mars because it doesn't support life full stop.

Thing is in Stellaris there are planets that support life.
Without the proper infrastructure, technologies or resources planets the same type as yours still aren't as habitable as yours, those of similar type are just about habitable and the other six types are still outright uninhabitable.

Habitability doesn't directly affect happiness. It affects MAX happiness.
It's obviously meant to be representative of the challenges your pops are going through to survive on your colonies.
Pops on works of your homeworld's type won't be as comfortable as they would be on your homeworld until you get the appropriate infrastructure and techs but they should still be fairly alright.
Pops on worlds of similar types will struggle a bit but they're not outright fighting just to live.
And pops on worlds completely different obviously can barely survive if they can even colonise so of course they'll be completely miserable.

>It's obviously meant to be representative of the challenges your pops are going through to survive on your colonies.

Friendly reminder that every tech giving you a bonus to habitability almost always references "eliminating" threats in the local environment.

You're absolutely right, Habitability is not a representation of how much your colonists like the planet so much as it is a representation of how rough the living is. It's why crater-heavy worlds have a habitability minus but "bleak" worlds have a HAPPINESS minus.
>>
>>169191037
What's the advantage of specialized ships? Why not just put a few missiles and a few PD on each ship?
>>
>>169193425
I dunno. It'd make sense if there was some ecosystem research (like on Arrakis when nobody bothered researching the sand trouts) to make vaccines for the local sicknesses, but not with influence. Nothing in the game explains the influence costs.

>>169193587
So it's shit? I'll just skip it, then.
>>
>>169194048

Ecosystem research is represented by the whole "habitability tech" thing, though I agree that there should be techs which reduce the influence cost of colonization.

Wait... Aren't there techs for that? Propaganda broadcasts give you +1 influence, declaring Rivals give you influence, having major government institutions like Planetary Capitals give you Influence.

Well yeah, 90% of people have no balls, call for adventure or something like that but still we are talking about empires that have 10-god knows how much Bn people on them.
Even made worse by the fact that its not a fucking life sentence, you get shore leave, visit planets, paid leave etc.

The way the ship building works any unnecessary weight makes the ship as a whole lot less efficient.

If you set your performance goals as 4 operational missile launchers and 4 operational point defense modules and go 2+2 then both ships need things like fire controls for both of the weapon systems and both ships will need to carry missiles with them etc. etc. So you end up with more total components in the fleet which makes the ships less efficient. Additionally if you separate the point defense and the missile launching you can now control each individually. What if you want the PD next to your short ranged ships without putting your missile launchers on the line of fire. If your mix features this becomes impossible. Maybe you want some armor on your close ranged PD but your long range missile ships don't need any etc. etc.

I don't think that battle reports exist in HOI4, but the data does exist (although mangled because of what happens when more than two fleets are involved). If there were proper modding tools you could just mod it, so instead you should pay $10 for the DLC that does it.

I would rather had to terraform planets to use them.
I would want to THINK about grabbing a planet that is for example mineral rich but you cant grow shit on it and have to import all of the food.
I would want to put my colonists in danger by colonizing valueable but hostile and dangerous planet etc.

You... You don't do this?

>I would want to THINK about grabbing a planet that is for example mineral rich but you cant grow shit on it and have to import all of the food.

You can do that in Banks, food is universal.

>I would want to put my colonists in danger by colonizing valuable but hostile and dangerous planet etc.

This is already a thing, too. Colonizing a low habitability world is literally colonizing a death world.

Hey, does anyone else think there should be some sort of planetary trait that gives an Army Damage bonus to units trained there? Shouldn't the men from a deadly world full of ravenous beasts be more hardy and vicious than men from a lush, comfy paradise?
>>
>>169204062
>You can do that in Banks, food is universal.

Oh, and before you mention planets with exceptional mineral deposits have food tiles.

Those things don't matter, they can get ignored. Want to grow a little bit of food on the planet? Sure, that's great! Want to produce Base+50% minerals on that tile instead? If you've got the food, you can do that too.

YES YOU LIKE THAT BUG COCK YOU SLUT

On the topic of civics

Civics from todays stream (Hiveminds have their own set of civics)
Distinguished Admiralty (militarist) +8% fire rate
Warrior Culture (militarist) + 20% army damage
Cutthroat Politics (no requirement) +1 influence gain
Mining Guilds (no requirement) +10% minerals
Efficient Bureaucracy (no requirement) +2 core systems
Nationalistic Zeal (militarist) +10% border range and +1 max rivals
Aristocratic Elite (not a democracy) -50% governor cost and +4 leader capacity
Functional Architecture (no requirement) -15% building cost

Citizen Service
authority ties citizenship to military service, so that only species with Full Military Service are afforded the right to vote and become leaders.

Civics from a previous stream
Philosopher King : Ruler Skill Levels +2
Slaver Guilds: Slave Food Output +10%, Slave Mineral Output +10%
Police State : Unrest -20
Beacon of Liberty: Monthly Unity +15%
Free Heaven : Migration Attraction +50%

Other Civics that I know of (no idea what they do in detail though)
Agrarian Idyll
Inwards Perfection
Environmentalist
Imperial Cult
Idealistic Foundation
Meritocracy
Free Haven
Shadow Council
Technocracy

These are the "Advanced" Civics
Fanatic Purifiers
Mechanist
Syncretic Evolution

>>
>>169208041

Facing a 41% increased fire rate faction is hell!

How the fuck can you make a rush war with this? Going for maximum greed without the strong trait or being fanatic xenophobe you get like +15% from industrious, 10% mining guilds and 10% from robot workers (25 on space, 35 on planet) without slaves. That assuming both are already militarist. It gets to ~35 vs 41. If the fanatic purifier has industrious also, you get an effective 20 vs 41 (minerals vs military strength).

I agree, fanatic purifier sounds to me like it only really works if you want to play some kind of barely sentient galactic apocalypse type species like the Tyranids. Any empire of sentient species would go about it with more nuance. Even if the standard protocoll is extermination, the point is that it's still a choice.

So the strict ethics requirement isn't really a problem, I don't see how a species like that could be anything other than xenophobic and militaristic, since they basically only live to eat the galaxy.

Hive mind seems to be mutually exclusive with everything else. The hive mind doesn't really have governmental ethics because the hive mind is actually just one "person". It's like asking a guy living by himself in a small apartment if his household is authoritarian or egalitarian or something like that. Whatever you decide to do is what you decide to do, your pops won't disagree with you, because they are you.

desu I don't know why /civ4xg/ doesn't organize any MP, I stopped playing paradox games SP around EU2 and the only time I play SP is when the game has just released and I'm trying the mechanics. Every single paradox game is balanced/designed around MP (their word, not mine), which means that 90% of the complains in these threads are non existant for me since players do gang up on the leaders, diplomacy isn't limited to the system etc.

Because people are all from different time zones and it's hard to find more than 1 or 2 people willing to play with you at any given time. I've tried in the past and never got anybody interested. I think people here are just too shy or unwilling to play MP games.
>>
>>169224832
I used to play Dominions with 4chan, if those autists are able to organize a 12 player MP then I don't see why you can't organize a god damn 4 player game.
>>
>>169225032
Like I said, I've tried organizing a Stellaris MP and got nowhere. I've resigned myself to never getting to play it MP since none of my RL friends have time for vidya anymore since they got girlfriends.
>>

There are currently 93 posters in this thread, of which probably around 80 are stellaris posters. You only need 5% of the people in this thread to get an MP going, so don't give up (even an hour a day is better than no MP, no?)
>>
>>169225309
Thing is, a lot of the people who play stellaris here pirated it so they can't play MP so far as I know. At least that was the excuse a lot of them gave when I asked around a few months ago. The one guy I did get interested couldn't find my hosted games and vice versa, and it turned out he's in Europe, so the game is also region locked ontop of that.
>>

>>
>>169227405
4X has strategy?

The scope is wider and involves lot less micromanagement than rts games. Instead of controlling the battle directly you control the nation that is fighting the fight.

define strategy
>>
>>169227508
I take it you haven't played against human opponents. Strategy, yes. Tactics, no.
>>
>>169227060
4X can be either real-time or turn based. Less focused on controlling individual units, more about larger scope empire management. A key component to 4x is expansion, which does not always require military action. Peacefully settling and pushing your borders is an integral part of the 4x genre, wars typically start after factions fall into competition over limited resources and space on the map. 4X games are also more about conquest/supremacy than simply destroying your enemies. Many 4X games allow you to win without having to go to war against your enemies.
>>
>>169227989
then it's just another flavor of grand-strat. I still can't see any connection to rts, and especially wargame. Wargame doesn't even have resources
>>
>>169228687
It's less simulation-y than GS. And lots of 4X involves training military units, and not just the stacks of soldiers you see in GS games, but actual RTS-like units that have specific strengths and weaknesses you can counter with different types of units. The units require specific research and sometimes buildings and resources to produce. That's where the RTS similarities come in. In terms of objectives though, it's more like a GS game.

DLC does not affect the checksum, because content availability is determined by the host and only the host. So if the host has all the DLC then everybody who joins his game will have access to it in that game, and if he has no DLC then they won't have access to it in his game.

>>

It can get boring after awhile, but MP in Grandstrat/4x is usually a nightmare.

>Have to play on slow-ass speeds/wait for scrubs to finish their turns
>Connection is usually shit and players randomly ragequit, leave, or get disconnected

Only way to really do it is with bros or with the anons in a general.

MP in any kind of strategy has always been hit or miss for me though. Played the shit out of it in AoE, C&C3, and DoW1 and 2, but could never get into it in shit like SC2 or RA. Too much cancer.

4x are very long form, and tend to have very poor netcode

it's difficult to get people together, it's difficult to get people to last several hour long sessions, and it's difficult to keep them together due to network issues

so there just isn't much except pain for those who try

the game really has to be designed for multiplayer, fast to play and stable enough that you won't drop after an hour

It's objectively superior to Civ V vanilla. I'd place it around G&K, but with more innate potential for development than G&K. Civ V was fundamentally flawed from its inception what with the screwed up global happiness and luxury system taking the dual place of what should have been two mechanics, trade and population caps.

currently pre patch the AI is atrociously bad at wars and producing and maintaining an army, and that problem alone almost singlehandedly makes the game not worth playing due to a total lack of challenge. it was something of a focus in the AI changes in the patch so we'll see where the game stands now. i dont have hope this is gonna fix the game in one swoop, but at least the team seems to be honed in on whats wrong.
>>
>>169261597
The first time I met aliens it was nuts. I didn't know what to expect. We just kind of jumped in and out of each others systems. One ship was heading towards Earth and I sent up the only battleship I had and I just let it idle there.
We ignored each other and then eventually made contact and acted neutral towards each other in the end.
My first combat experience was a disaster. That same game with another race I decided I wanted to be hostile towards them and sent up the laser only armed ship (terrible idea by the way) and fought what I guess was their geosurvey ship. I didn't know I needed to train the crew so when I figured out how to make them shoot, it took them 5 minutes to pull the trigger. I had been rammed already by then. Eventually the ship rammed me enough times to strand me by taking out my engines and their ship blew up. My warship was disabled by a science ship. Imagine in Stellaris having a cruiser lose to a science ship.

I fugged up.
I didn't realize that when you sector shit off that it needs it's own power and shit. So how do you guys do it? Do you balance each planet's energy needs on an individual basis? Or do you colonize 3 worlds and make it: one for energy, one for minerals, and one for research?
5 planets seems like an even lower cap now since I pretty much need all 5 to myself to keep going. Like I don't feel good about sectoring any of those off. I have 2 more that I thought were good to go for my first sector until everyone would suffer from unemployment.
>>
>>169264804
There's three main options, I'll list them in order of least to most efficient:
Option 1: make every world you colonize totally self sufficient

Option 2: just throw in a few extra systems that produce energy when you're creating the sector to makeup for the colony's deficiency

Option 3: just dump a bunch of credits into the sector's stockpile every few decades, depending on how imbalanced its energy consumption is
>>
>>169264936
I guess my other question would be, how long until you start doing that?
Because it's 2251 right now and I've never had a massive surplus of energy by this point. Always around +20 or so.
I always see games where people have maxed out minerals and energy and I don't know when that should be happening. Especially since I found out that crisis' happen around 200 years in.

>>
>>169265171
Have you maxed out your power plant upgrades? Do you have power hubs on every single world that has at least 3 power plants? Have you researched the techs that increase credit yield? There's a lot of ways to boost your economy. A simple way is to just have a couple worlds that you devote to spamming power plants. Personally I like to have a nice sized world for that, 16 tiles at least.
>>
>>169266845

Can a moon even be tidally locked to a star?
>>
>>169272027
no
it's parent planet must be having more gravitational influence than it's parent star for obvious reasons, thus if it's to be tidally locked to anything then it must be it's parent planet

though, if the moon had a satellite of it's own, it might be tidally locked to that if the mass ratio's small enough, but such a system isn't likely to be stable to begin with
