Try not to use everyone at once, and select a set of units you want to use and use them consistently. If you manage to screw yourself over by letting too many die don't be afraid to use pre-premotes you get later in the game (Pent)

You need Sophia alive to nab a Guiding Ring at the end of the desert she starts in, and to unlock the extra chapter for the special weapon needed for the good endings. Same extra chapter stuff goes for Sue if you decided to level her up and Shin up a bunch to take the Sacae route. The snow route requires using the pegasus girls a bunch and keeping them (and probably Zealot) alive instead.
