Every engine needs specific adaptations and tweaks for what you're going to do with it. Bioware seems to have stuck with their DA:I version of Frostbite, made slight improvements and moved onto making the actual game. Once you're into doing the level design, scripting quests, adding model assets and so on, it's much harder to tweak and improve the core engine.

But another reason that isn't "Bioware sux at it" is that they're using the engine for a greater scope than anything else it's been used for. There are PVP shooters, singleplayer linear FPS, sports games and driving simulations using it, but they're the first to use it for games as large as RPGs.

For example Battlefield 4 is almost as old as ME3 but looks better than Andromeda today generally... but it's focus is completely different. It has something like maybe four hours of content, and it's all based around linear, high detail set pieces where you can run in straight lines and watch animation sequences. Not something that people will be playing for 60 hours.

Unlike a lot of people, I've actually enjoyed the past few Bioware games. I thought DA:I, though flawed, had a lot going for it and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it. But the one thing thats bothered me about the last slew of Bioware games is that your RP options are pretty limited. It seems like with each new game, the protagonist becomes less and less of your own character and more of a pre determined one.

For example, in Inquisition there weren't really all that many "evil" options that you could take. There were a few dickish ones, like banning the Grey Wardens and stuff, but compared to the kind of shit you could do in Origins or even KOTOR thats nothing.

I don't even really like playing edgy characters, I tend to go for a good guy most of the time, but I like having the option. I like knowing that if I ever replay the game I'll be able to play it as a very different character.

So, my question is how do ya'll think Andromeda is going to handle this? Will Ryder be able to played as a true Bad Boi or will it just be another case of heroic dialogue option or slightly annoyed heroic dialogue option? Are you hopeful or cynical? SInce this is /meg/ the answer is almost certainly cynical, but I'll ask anyway.

Back in my cycle, there were no generals. If you wanted to discuss this "Mass Effect" videogame, you would need to paint it on the corpses of your enemies. If ME:A is gonna be proper open world, then I can't trust BIOWARE not to fuck up the map with a million markers and bullshit side quests, collectible hunts, leveled enemies in 'elite zones' and further 100% cheevo hunting bullshit.

Without a doubt the best thing saving the Mass Effect series from that is that when they let you off rails, it was in the form of a hub to explore and little else.

And I'm not saying that open world sandbox games are shit (they are), but just that some devs understand how to do them and others really don't, and as the gaming community becomes more aware of and annoyed by the cheap stalling tactics that open world games pull to infest their bland biomes with "content". And Bioware isn't skilled at that. They were, WERE excellent at dialogue. But as is it seems they have completed the selling of all their writers for action coders. Andromeda is fucked.

Am I the only one who thought the Suicide Mission was awesome? Only problems were the Spoopy Baby Reaper being the final boss instead of a Harbingerd Collector General, and you really only need three squadmates: One for the vent, one for the first fireteam, one for the bubble, and some loyal combo of them for the Baby. Something like GTA5's Heists would be cool.
