is it possible to make a MMO with unity or game maker as a indie dev? Or are we just cucked to doing simple RPGs with small multiplayer elements?
>>
>>169053986
Did it really end up so shit? I remember the trailer showed a very clear style and vision, hard to imagine them fucking up.

>>169054149
You can network a simple game to a server (think RotMG), you can't make WoW.
>>
>>169054149
Just why the fuck are there so many retards here who think an indie MMO is even remotely viable?
>>
>>169053802
Fable has three ability paths: Strength, skill and will.
Strength focuse on melee, physical power and endurance.
Skill focuses on ranged, agility and mobility.
Will focuses on magic.

In combat you get experiance based on what you use.
eg. use only melee and you get three general experience to use in any path and seven strength experience that can only be spent in that path.
>>
>>169054265
I watched someone play through it and it's exactly what I expected it to be based on the trailer: all style, no substance. Shitty boring characters, shitty boring story that ends with a giant fucking expository dump at the end just to explain something, and there's next-to-no gameplay.

Grimrock 2 gave each character a few skills depending on the class. Stuff like acrobatics, light weapons mastery, fire magic, etc.
Each skill went from 0 to 5, and every time you levelled up you'd get a skill point to spend.
For example, let's say heavy weapon mastery. Each point you spent on that, gives you +X% chance to hit with heavy weapons. On top of that, there were some "special rewards". At level 2 mastery you could attack from the back of the party with a heavy weapon, and at mastery level 5 you could wield a 2 handed weapon in one hand.
Then there were weapons with special requirements (2 h weapon mastery needed to wield), and weapons with special attacks, like, for example, earthquake bash, that also had skill requirements.

Mix that with a bunch of different skills for each class, different weapons and magic with a lot of requirements, and you get a really customizable upgrade system.

I really, really liked it, and I'm not a huge fan of rpgs

Viable/possible is not the same thing as practical. Indie MMO is possible and viable, but not practical. You need atleast a small team for a MMO to actually take off.

Minecraft is actually a MMO in the sense that a server can actually hold thousands of players at one time, mojang is just too retarded to optimize for such a player capacity so you only get servers with a few hundred at a time instead.

Grimrock 1 had a system with a similar idea, but worse. It's not even worth explaining.
I like grimrock 1 more than 2, because it feels more like a dungeon crawler compared to the open world-ness of the second one. But the skill system in 2 is top notch.

You can give it a try without having played the first one, for research. they don't really connect story wise [ACTUAL SPOILER]until the ending.

>SquareDev wants to code
Made me think of something.

Why do artists still want to code in collab? Isn't the point of a collab to split the work?

He's not the first, I've met plenty of artists who wished they could find someone to work with because 'coding is a pain' but yet they still want to do coding for the game. I don't get it.

Why does everyone like to pretend that handedness doesn't matter? It's true that you can convert between them in a fairly trivial way, but if you have an engine of any significant size it's very important to pick one and stick with it, or things get very confusing. Even more so if you support both OGL and D3D.

Also, why is right-handedness the standard outside of D3D? The screen (ignoring stereoscopy) looks like a window into another world; things don't pop out of it, they sink into it. Z = increasing depth makes way more sense.

So after three days of brain storming and prototyping of a way to generate high quality random maps, I'm wondering if the idea is even worth it.

Are random maps a good feature? Is consistency better for a player than the possible replayability he might have?

I'm getting the feeling this is a waste of time and I should design levels by hand.
>>
Ok, you give me money, and I'll make a game for you, deal?

Depends entirely on whether randomly placed elements in your environment have a reasonable likelihood of interacting in novel, interesting, or surprising ways. Procgen is at its best when the elements that comprise it make something greater than the sum of their parts.

I wouldn't mind contracting your services for my game if you're not busy. The audience I'm aiming for is big in to classic-sounding game soundtracks (Betrayal at Krondor, etc) so this sort of style could go pretty nice with what I'm putting together.

If you're unfamiliar, here's a YT link to BaK's soundtrack.

>>
>>169058659
>brain storming and prototyping
Or, you could research into games that have already done it succesfully like Spelunky.
Although it depends on what type of game you have.
>>
>>169058659
Procedural generation works well if and only if the entire game is designed around it. It works spectacularly in Spelunky, for instance. That game would quickly get boring as hell without it. Same for most roguelikes; random levels means the sense of exploration never runs out.

They make less sense in a story based game or one that's otherwise supposed to be cinematic/guided.
>>
>>169058659
random maps are good

and custom maps are good

personally i think nothing can beat by hand but its time consuming

for instance black rock depths from warcraft is infinitely more interesting compared to any randomly generated map

however it might suffer from repeated play through which make randomly generated better
for things such as rogue likes or something of that nature

>realise that my attempt at making a generic enemy system has a whole bunch of problems making weirder enemy systems and I might need to make custom enemy types as well

>>169058382
Because if your coordinate system is X,Y,Zup, it is right handed, as 1,0,0 x 0,1,0 = 0,0,1. And it is what mathematicians have been doing for decades and is most natural, since it allows to easily draw things like f(x,y)=z.
When these faggots came out and said "ah but what if we imagine X as the bottom border of the screen and Y as up and Z as going into the screen" anyone who did math wanted to kill them.
>>
>>169058659
Random maps can be good if you need a lot of content with not much manpower. However, you need to make them well, obviously.

My random map generator is decent in my opinion, but being random occasionally makes maps that are really bad, as well as maps that are very good.

Last week's record was broken with a new all-time high of 46 entries. Good work. I had to do quite a bit of hacking to get it all to fit, so expect next week's theme to be much more compact. Also, I have decided to shelve the tripcode idea, so I removed those details from the readme.

I don't know, anon. I would like it, but so far not much people digged my idea of a programmer art, placeholder art jam. Maybe if it's specifically ascii, people will vote for it.

I'm not even sure, by the way, what the next jam will be. I see Cops winning the polls, yet loli fans are louder and keep on pushing their idea in the threads.

It's not like you're missing out anything.

>can't post screenshot

Did Hiro fuck up 4chan again?
>>
>>169068551
That's the problem with jam's polls here in my opinion. Good or interesting ideas always get buried under more visually appealing ideas, even if they have been done before, because lets face it lolijam is basically the same thing as waifujam but with flat chests.

>>169068571
>Did Hiro fuck up 4chan again?
Yup
>>
>>169068551
>programmer art, placeholder art jam
Because nobody cares.

Don't get me wrong I'm a programmer too and I'd participate in something like that but let's be honest, people just don't care about something that doesn't look good. Even more here in agdg.
Also if you look at the previous jams, mech jam excluded they're pretty much all targeted at artists.
>>
>>169068903
>Good or interesting ideas always get buried under more visually appealing ideas
I don't understand this, by the way. You see 2-3 people always lamenting on how they can not get into art, which makes me believe that there are even more of them, yet still visually challenging ideas keep on winning these things.
>>
>>169069165
Pretty much what >>169069162 said. People voting are only interested on cute looking games.
Again, that's why I think we should have 2 simultaneos jams. One art oriented and one mechanics oriented.

>>169059697
From a bunch of research I've done on procgen it seems that many developers actually try to figure out a way to recognize these bad generated maps in code and discard them to make a good one instead.

Or you could make a simulator that "runs" the generated map and helps you gather data to see what works and help refine the generation algorithm.

>>169069495
Totally agree with this. MMOs are following the same approach too close to the point most games are feeling like the same game reskined over and over. Seems it is succesfull since people keep playing them, but are they fun?
I always feel that way when trying a new one "Is exactly the same as x but looks different" and when the novelty wears off I go back to playing x.

So don't make loli porn games?
>>
Let's say I'm sick of tile maps and want to try something different.

For example:
- Platforms are basically lines defined by two points (so if the player's detector has an itersection with this line, he can walk on it)
- Other, bigger shapes are defined by a rectangle (AABB detection for example)
- Allow objects which have a circle/ellipse shape (depends on how I define the player's collision box or detectors, but doable)

I would just place these wherever I want them to be.

The question is, with knowing the math to how to check if the player is in touch with these objects, what would be the most efficient way to do the actual math? If I have like 30 of these per map, would iterating trough all of them be too much for the CPU? Or it depends on the rest of the logic?

Story time.
Today I attended a lecture at my uni on game design of the Dark Souls series. It was hosted by my school's game design club. The lecturer was an undergrad of game design who just received funding for her design team company, and the lecture consisted of her going over what it means to be a student of game design and why not to write an undergrad thesis.
She then talked about her new company, the rough design of the game they are developing, and her relation to the gaming industry as having connections that stemmed from her being an ex girlfriend of one of the Blizzard coders who worked on Overwatch. The room than began asking her many questions on the few designs she showed off for her game in development, only to be met with "I'm not sure, I'm not the coder." for many of the answers. She also didn't seem to do art or music, so I was led to believe she was either the "story developer", or the "ideas gal".
Needless to say, what I learned if I were a member of this industry, my primary objective would be to shag someone who's involved in the industry and worm my way up from there.

She also said when she was dating the Bliz guy she got to go to E3 with him in 2015. She said she intends to take her company and set up a booth promoting her game there. She made it sound so easy, I just couldn't believe it.

I don't think they had a title. It was based around a hybrid of Shadow of the Colossus sized enemies with Deamon Souls skills, controls, and level design. So far it looks like they only had a few levels drawn out on paper and a model for a skill tree, yet (as someone pointed out) many of the skills created seemed supplementary and lacking a core focus. It was quite funny to see the club try and one by one give her advice on the project. To be genuine here, I don't know if that is gauche and presumptuous to try and help bring random ideas to a project you've seen for about 2 minutes as an outsider to someone who didn't even ask, or if it's just courteous and even if they were bad ideas still nice to entertain.
>>169081904
>>169082035
Will he though? I can see some sort of investor version of the friend zone taking place.
If you want another laugh, the lecturer was a big Souls fan, apparently part the reason she wanted to to do this hybrid design was because SotC and DeS were 2 of her first games, which her father got her into playing. Well as reference to both her game and thesis paper (which was the focus of it), she created a binder that had almost a manuscript for the Dark Souls series, including but not limited to character dialogue script, items list with flavor text, location maps, and other text information, all ripped manually because she wasn't aware all this information was available on Wikipedia.

Don't be put out. You pretty much can't 1MA a game with AAA visuals unless you already have experience in that field and are letting everything else, including gameplay, go by the wayside.
Those games are made by literally hundreds of people with multiple lifetimes of combined experience.
Doesn't mean you can't make a great game with a defined artstyle but you'll need to manage your expectations.
Photo realism is pretty much out. Go look up some 3d games by 1 person or small team to get an idea of what's possible.
>>
>>169083761
Well she said thier coder has coding for 10 years, and knows 3 languages (even though he's never had any professional experience working projects). I can't say you're wrong, but I only met her, the others never really talked, and from what I understand the faces of companies and reams like this usually don't do much actual programming.

definitely art. you can learn programming by yourself easily, but art is incredibly hard to learn plus you have to be born with a talent for it othewise you are fucked
but don't be sad if you can't art, you don't need any talent for coding and games need more programmers than artists so just colab with some artist, but be ready to fork over at leat 70% of proficts, since art is what selles the game, not the code, the costumers don't see nor care about the code, all they see and look at while playing is the art

Currently working on the mid boss for stage 02. The twin butterfly princesses (far left and far right) are the actual end stage boss (they take off after you beat mid boss). I would post a pre mid boss dialogue screen with them but currently the background is literally a splash of two shades of green which I will try to turn into the tops of trees later. I just needed to have something to start with.

Leading up to this point small sprites where carrying smaller stumps that shot at you and those pink winged fairy butterflies were popping up to take shots and then running away.

I don' think I will make demo day (technically stage 01 is' good to go' for testing but 1) i don't have keyboard support coded in yet, only gamepad, 2) I dont have any music yet but a kind anon showed some free assets I might temporarily use and 3) I don't think I deserve to enter this demo day. Maybe next one, but a really cool anon is making me a fan art and it is reigniting the fire I thought had sputtered out after I slammed art for almost a week. How is your game going?

>backwards voting process to try to trick voters
there is no tricking involved
Everywhere where I have written about voting, I have always written that we are voting to vote options out.
I am not responsible for anons, who lack reading comprehension.

>taking nominations during the backward voting so newly spammed submissions push out older ones
in the first poll, I explicitly told people to check back once in a while to make sure that newborn submissions get voted on properly.

>after "freezing" the poll keeping it up only a short amount of time while most of /agdg/ is asleep
the "most of the" /agdg/ got to vote yesterday. However, I intended to keep the poll up till aroundish 24h, but I saw the fake poll and jumped into action. But I suppose that any future poll could be constrained to at least 24h uptime.

-------------------------------------

Also, another thing. I cannot be entirely sure if I will be able to post tomorrow, since range bans don't warn when they come. So, if I haven't shown my face tomorrow(when the poll has passed 24h mark), some other good Samaritan can go ahead and process the poll results and post the next round of the poll.

If I am range banned, I can still use the itch.io account that I used as authentication earlier. So, I will confirm the legit poll in its comments when the time comes to it.
>>
>>169093619
One thing I've always thought about random gen was you could cheat.
Have it generate a bunch then go through and save the good ones, then instead of generating at playtime the game just cycles through those.

Then you'd have randomized maps/terrain but consistent quality.
>>
Is anyone actually interested in making a ero game for the jam?
>>
>>169093697
You should have had different rounds for submitting themes and for voting on them. Your system favours the themes entered late in the poll and is not fair to the early ones.
Please, if you want to pretend you're trying to be democratic, start over with this considerations in mind, otherwise this poll is not valid.

>>169093697
There is no point to using vote downs if there are unlimited votes because every user can effect the poll in all the exact same ways (just invert all your votes). However the vote down system is less intuitive as the least favorite ideas are pushed to the top.

The way you are trying to handle the submission window also relies on users to
>return to the same poll over and over again
>check against another sheet for which entries are actually valid
>hunt for new entries that they dont like
which is not going to work.

If your intention was to get users to think about what games they would rather not work on then just tell them to be more liberal with their votes as its a multi staged poll, or use an alternative voting system that are actually using in actual elections and polling like IRV or thumbs up/down system. It would be best if nominations were their own stage entirely but failing that at least make it part of a positive vote system.
>>

>>
>>169094019
>start over with this considerations in mind
no need to start over. This poll wasn't a complete shitfest and produced acceptable results. However, do learn from the mistakes of this polling and use what you have learned when conducting a poll for the jam that will come after this jam.

>You should have had different rounds for submitting themes and for voting on them.
I actually thought about doing that for this poll, but I figured that /agdg/ anons have become a bit too cynical about polling to make the process even longer. So, I opted to have submissions of themes and first voting round at the same time.

>Your system favours the themes entered late in the poll and is not fair to the early ones.
I specifically added a lot of themes to the poll (taking them from previous polls and making other up) to make the negative effect of newborn submission as negligible as possible.

>otherwise this poll is not valid
its more valid than anything else that has been done so far, so its fine

>if you want to pretend you're trying to be democratic
democracy is not my goal. Consensus is my goal. We certainly can't agree on the best theme, but we can perhaps reach an agreement on which of these themes causes the least amount of butthurt for everyone.

The problem with most themes people suggest is artwork. And how gameplay is influenced by artwork. And how little the theme influences gameplay.
Like, for example, let's say waifujam.
In whatever you do, you're forced to have a female character around. Which means games like an abstract puzzle (think spacechem) wouldn't work. Or they could work, but only if you add the waifu as decoration/giving tips. Then the jam theme is worthless, because you could just have a mecha, or a loli, or a cop as decoration.

>>169097517

How is a jam based on the idea of combining two different gameplay mechanics into something that works dumb shit or a meme? Following your logic seems pretty good to me, theme is as broad as WaifuJam and the condition of mixing mechanics would mean putting a little bit of thought on its making, and could result in fresh and fun things to play. Nobody is stopping you from having a female MC on it either.

You do. that's the whole point of it. Granted, the organizer then switched it to "anything cute works" (making it more in a "cute jam" than a "waifu jam") but it would mean that if you don't have a cute character it doesn't follow the jam's theme anyway.

I have already decided that I don't really need their services. If anyone likes my game, those people would probably be an ultra niche. Thus, I think that BSM would not be able to do anything useful for me.

When my game eventually gets ready enough to market, I would probably get better results by doing some surgical marketing on my own.
>>
>>169098536
It looks better because the perspective (well, orthographic) matches. If you want automatic shadow generation then do it the modern way where you use 3D models and a lighting system but use low resolution textures/renduring and still snap everything on a 1x1 pixel grid.

>>169098631
It might have been convenient for authoring but that doesn't mean shit if it cannot give good results in the end. There simply is not enough information that the shader could get from just the 2D sprites themselves unless he wrote a different shader for every possible shape of object in his game.

Fuck. I'm really stuck on this part, and it probably counts for half of the gameplay.

I found the actual note hitting really easy to do though, I just made a timer that counts the beat, an array of beats which should be hit and a "is the player on the beat" bool. So for unevenly spaced beats you just run the metronome (timer) twice as fast so that instead of counting in 4th beats, it counts 8th beats.

the length was not the only thing wrong, it was also the shape which is the real problem for auto generation because the 3d information is not contained in a 2d sprite shape.

Hey /agdg/, I'm making an RTS game and when I move a bunch of selected units they need to correctly position around clicked point. How do I approach this?

It's easy with one unit, he just stops once he reaches the point. But since they all have collisions with each other, they go wild in a group; all trying to reach the same point.

How can I make it that they just pile around that point? I tried bunch of complicated shitty logic, like them trying to find a spot around the point, or checking if point is already taken and then finding an empty space around. But that all seems unnecessarily complicated and dirty.

Then I tried formations. Basic one being they assemble a square formation. But I got stuck with what seemed to be a very easy straightforward way to implement it. I know how to get points within a square using a nested for loop, but what stopped me was having to using a 3rd for loop in order to know how many units are selected and how big the formation needs to be. This below is just some shitty code that doesn't work, but I don't understand how to make it work. The loops are really getting to me.

if mouse_check_button_pressed(mb_right){
for (i=0; i<ds_list_size(selected_units); i+=1)
{
for (k=mouse_x; k<mouse_x+(ds_list_size(selected_units)*32); k+=32)
{
for (j=mouse_y; j<mouse_y+(ds_list_size(selected_units)*32); j+=32)
{
selected_units[| i].mx = k
selected_units[| i].my = j
}
}
}
}

Can anyone please assist me with these for loops? What am I not getting? Or should I approach formations, or units correctly positioning, differently?

It's very hard to define but in my opinion that doesn't matter for a jam. In fact I think it's good because we get to see different interpretations of the theme. I think the key point is that it has to have a character be it explicit or implicit, concrete or abstract.

Japanpowered defines waifu as
>Waifu refers to a fictional character an anime fan considers a wife or husband.
Ideally a waifu or husband would be cute, but that's not always the case. I think that explains a bit of the nature of the jam.
>>
>>169100312

You're gonna need way more sadly.
Just practice whenever you get bored of coding.

Sounds like a lot of work for not much. DMC is impressive because you need to be tight, not because you can spam the shit out of a huge list of combos.

I didn't really follow the whole debacle, is it rush hour jam after all ?

>is it rush hour jam after all ?
I created the jam page trying to curb the shitposting, but I don't plan to push it or shill it. I just thought it was a good theme that would let everyone who wants to have loli/cops/mecha/whatever join, while having some challenge for people who want a mechanic-based jam.
I'll post it next thread, and I'll be glad if people repost it/hype it and if it kills the pollposting a bit, but if not it's fine, I tried.
>>
>>169103375
Well, I'm not a combo video connoisseur but I don't think people will care about combos in a game that is solely about combos.
You could take the exact same concept, gamify it, and your potential audience increases 100x.

this is my target market, as you can see is a niche idea.
>>
>>169103746
nope
every solution I tried gets fucked one way or another because Unity doesnt support serializing abstract classes, interfaces, or anything with inheritance or polymorphism, can't serialize most generic types e.g. lists, has memory troubles with large arrays, can't add or remove fields from the editor, etc etc etc

the only other way is to go component based, which is ridiculously shitty to implement because I'm going to have SO MUCH repeat code and going to have to individually code each event anyway for interaction and things like choice branching
>>
>>169103736
They're all 2 years old. That's when he had his IRC chatroom circlejerk going and was forcing his "YESDEV" youtube channel into every OP of agdg (even with everyone telling him to stop). It was all just his toadies (like rotate at the time) with a smattering of innocent anons who didn't know better

They certainly know now
>>
>>169103997
You -are- doing something wrong.
Post some example contents of one of your savefiles
>>
>>169104074
its not serialization for save files, did you even read?

its serialization so that unity can go from Inspector => Editor => Serialize objects in Scene => Play => Deserialize objects in Scene => Runtime

Checking out past jams and demo days I couldn't help but notice the frequency of games with completely non-descriptive descriptions and screenshots.

I understand that you are probably going for a self-deprecating "whatever" humor but your game's description is not really the place for that.

This also goes for intentionally bad dialogue in games, please try to improve instead of hiding behind irony.

Just my two cents.
>>
>>169104231
ohohoh fuck
>>
>>169104206
shit, I'm sorry, I skimmed trough your post and thought you were the guy asking for help on /v/ gamedev threads.
>>
>>169103978
I don't think your original statement is true, anon. That's why I prefer indie games. They usually have heart and love in them. Not all. You can clearly feel that some was made by a bunch of hipsters who are far up in their own asses and act like misunderstood artists. I always search for the exceptions.
>>
>>169104304
yeah, its just a ridiculous mess and Unity basically forces their shitty built-in UnityObject - GameObject - Component - Scene
>>
>>169104231

>expected release date: 2053
>>
>>169104263
I agree with this. I always try to make my jam pages look nice and have decent screenshots, even if the game isn't great. At the very least it helps me learn how to make a good looking page, so when I do make a good game I can apply it to that.

I admittedly don't know much about it but the webm I saw was pretty amusing, just don't overdo the humor or it gets really tiresome.
