The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):

>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths

>>169048094
Its litterally like having an NPC in your world that can talk back with actual responses. Zero integration beyond that and you have to compete for resources. Some sort of race to the centre might be interesting, but little else.

The network will also only support a small number of players. 10-12-ish if memory serves. It might be improved at later dates, but I doubt it.

Lets not even talk about collision and combat, those are predictably bad.

Classifying ships can be handy if you are dealing with an armada, or have a big enough group of people to actually make use of such terms.

Otherwise it's pure autism, and using an already existing system is simpler than developing your own. Look at sci-fi/fantasy languages that are just English with a coat of paint.

turnaround point.png
2MB, 1280x720px
So I'm trying to learn trains.

The system I'm planning out is supposed to accomodate 2-3 trains. This is the turnaround point I designed. Is there anything I could do to improve this design? After taking this screenshot, I changed the chain signals on the left and right rides of the loop to normal ones. This allows trains to begin entering the loop as soon as a train has cleared the entry point on the outside, which works decently from what I can tell. A single 2-3 train will take up about half of the loop.
>>
>>169050698
You are needlessly complicating things. Just like, run trains man.
>>
>>169050673
Classifying ships can be handy if you are dealing with an armada, or have a big enough group of people to actually make use of such terms.

Maybe in games where you have to make use of different ships.
But in abortion you have one superfucking heavy main ship and that's it.
It's super early and stupid to start naming things, but that isn't the worst thing, that ponyfaggot wants to standardize his own vision of ship classes as a gold standard for the game,
I wouldn't be surprised if he was still in elementary.

It's a single-player only spinoff of FtD focusing on industry and civilization stuff
It's also being used as a test bed for stuff that can -eventually- be ported back to FtD. Since it doesn't have multiplayer, it's easier to develop for
Of course, that leaves FtD mostly dead in the water until then

That looks like a good recipe for jams, desu. I found it easier to just lay tracks where they need to go and cover junctions as necessary.

Are you planning on having a single "unloading port" at your base?
>>
>>169050698
>>169062167
The way to completely avoid jams with a roundabout like that is to just have the entire circle portion be a single signal block. So don't put any signals on the circle. Once one train goes in, no others can enter until it leaves. It can slow things down of course, but you won't have to deal with deadlock. And at max it could take a train like, 4 seconds to get through? Really not a big deal.

Best to keep them to a minimum, as said. Only use one if you have a very busy place and absolutely need trains to be able to turn around there (usually better to just have them be able to enter the network from either direction), or you have to have a split in the tracks.

And honestly you'd probably be fine with only two tracks each way. 2-3 trains is a lot less than you think, and they're just fine driving behind eachother.

How does Factorio multiplayer play out?

I installed a few mods after beating the game, and one of them is the Factorissimo mod. I redid some of my supply lines, and now I'm juggling an iron deficiency, a copper deficiency, a power shortage at night, and the need to expand.

So I wonder, in a multiplayer setting, do people sort of just go for one task (iron supply, copper supply, power upkeep), or does it become one big clusterfuck?

This general is actually in a pretty good state considering the slow rate of posting
Even though we get spells of no conversation, we have enough regulars in here all the time to bump it away from death when needed, unlike other generals I know that die pretty regularly even though they get more posts than us.

I guess that's what happens when even the games being posted are undead

It's babbages design for the printing unit of the difference engine. Unfortunately, we don't know how to read it, because it's written in Babbage's special mechanical notation, which Babbage didn't explain well. This what enabled babbage to design the difference engine with a gorillion moving parts, without any CAD tools.(CAD tools today would struggle with it)

Supposedly this diagram represents the geometric/functional/phasing relationships between parts without any dimensions.

All of the plans for babbages analytical engine are in this format

>Two way rails are for people that really really know that they are doing with their lives.
Really? I dunno, it seemed easier than trying to fit a loop in a spaghetti factory.

Anyway, landmines are neat if you've already got a cannon shell factory, because then you've got half the recipe there. And really, each mine costs a quarter of a steel beam, half a piece of surfer, and half a piece of coal. It's really not all that much.

I've also yet to have biters attack empty rails. I don't know if they ever will, but so far they've just waltzed on past to the firing line. I imagine they might attack a train if it's stationary, but every planned waiting spot at every junction is under the cover of turrets, so I'm not too worried.

Sulphur is most important and most scarce resource of the ones used in landmine, and if you run out of oil you gonna have bad time.

Granted, since each outpost only gets visited by one train. I've worked around this by just having several outposts for each resource, so that one train is always unloading at main base.

My refineries are stuck because I have too much Petroleum. While it goes without saying that YMMV, sometimes sulfur ends up not really being that valuable.

Will keep that in mind. I don't have many areas yet where rails are far from turrets, but I'm planning a fairly long-distance base here soon.

I'm literally ~10 hours in, and RTGs straight up feel like cheating, plus engineering cool ships/planes etc is what I'm in for, I just have a serious fetish for rail guns so had to explore them first.

Kind of, asteroid real estate is an easier market though.

Make sure to sell the cheap shit, unbrand the expensive shit and sell that elsewhere for max profit to effort.

And as far as piracy is concerned, for me, the hardest part was finding the cargo ships to loot, I'd find around three or four loot-able ones in a sector, but after they're looted or shown to be uncooperative, that sector is pretty much useless forever unless you literally just AFK in there for like an hour.
Really depends on luck how much you earn though, sometimes you get 50 water and earn nothing, sometimes you get 50 war robots and earn 500k+.
But again, selling asteroids does that even easier and more reliably.

Also, Alestorm and running wild are some top tier pirate metal bands if you're looking for that sort of shit.

Too late to bump the thread, oh well.

Ground stuffs in REM goes well. I'm working on the first test map and fine tuning of the wheels while REMdev works on getting the wheels into the builder. He's got everything going pretty good, but because the unity wheel colliders were intended for generic maymay mobile racing games and not building games, you can't flip them without doing some more fuckery. We've elected to have discrete left/right wheel modules for now. Placing wheels with mirror mode on will place down the correct version opposite to the one you place. Eventually we'll probably need to use custom wheel scripts, but for now they function well enough.

Dicking with some post-processing in the meantime.

This is an extremely overdone example with all the settings cranked up to 11. Motion Blur, Color grading, chromatic aberration, temporal anti aliasing, ambient occlusion, screenspace reflections and some other nonsense. Uses 100% of a GTX 980 at a framerate of 100fps-ish while recording. Fortunately made it so that shit can be turned off with a hotkey, which is nice, and leaves the 980 only at 30% at 140 fps. Some of the effect is of course lost at lot bitrate ant-vision webms.

Some of it glitches out a bit. The wheels are at a point I'm pretty happy with, being powerful enough to get you where you need to be, while also allowing enough slip to allow DEJAVU. Currently, they all have steering and power for testing purposes but in the future you'll have access to drive-only and steering-only wheels, along with drivin steering wheels.

Probably going to leave this in as an optional thing until we get an options menu in properly. Should also mention its BLOO because it was an exercise in overdoing it. In actuality, it should be way the hell more subtle to convey the scene is supposed to be 'cold.'

Can't resist the jab, can you? I'll always love you, floatyshipsanon. Glad you like it though, it would have been pretty heartbreaking to finally put it in and have you hate it.

>that terrain looks nice for something amateur

Its a geographic topology heightmap of somewhere in the north canadian archipelago with a 7k snow texture slathered over it, along with some minor tweaking/smoothing and lighting fuckery. Took about a half hour to do. The walls were put in in litterally twenty seconds. I plan to work on a desert map next, then an urban map. Eventually, I'll gitgud and stop relying so hard on real-world topographical maps.

>,I can dig bouncy ground because you can just bullshit with low gravity or suspension

What do you mean by this? Those wheels can of course be tweaked to one's liking in the future, but I have them set to offer a smooth-ish ride over rough terrain. Otherwise its pretty close to real physics. Closer than most, anyway.

How you guys can just manipulate suspension of gravity and the bounciness of the chassis seen in the video. In space there's no bounciness just inertia which doesn't go away which makes turning look gay.

Same everything, just a different setting with wheel colliders and the global Y acceleration set to -27.

Incidentally, multiplayer shouldn't be too hard to add onto ground stuff, but that requires more testing. Works brettygud in 6dof at 300m/s avg, so I'm not too worried.

>>169158102
>if you can add armor plates and guns this would easily be good warthunder/worldoftanks/crossout

But you can.

Sleds are also completely feasible, as they're just wheels clipped into a model-thing without power and low slip settings. Sure, why not. Some thruster un-re-fucking will be required, so that'll take a bit longer to do. We plan to put in tracks next anyway.

I did this once, me and a few guys built a killbox where we could shoot peoples feet. We were at the top penthouse of that hotel building by the fountain, SWAT had come by due to gunshots from fending off a previous raid and were standing by the stairs just low enough to shoot back. Still managed to fight them off by having a medic with us. Some double nigger kept walking outside our barricaded window and we kept shooting him through it, which made him pissed so he called an admin every time apparently oblivious to the fact that he was walking into a gunfight.

-Your vehicles weigh a fuckton more than that dragon, ram it to oblivion

I actually find it much easier to use linux, specially for work
I have a windows PC just for gaming of course
But my linux laptop runs 130 games on my steam library, and factorio runs extremely smooth, at 15% cpu max.
I'm gonna dual boot eventually to play less autistic games with the gf that don't have dual-controller/shared screen support.

The only bullshit you can encounter on linux is lack of drivers for certain videocards, but this is a laptop so it doesn't matter, I only play 2D stuff

Decide what pitch angle you want. Place two ACBs next to the pitch rotor. Set one to spin the dediblade whichever way tilts you down when you're more than a degree too high. Vice versa for the other ACB. Use range limits to make sure they don't fuck your main rotor.
>>
>>169212780
You'll basically need one of the following:
Jets
Forwards/backwards facing propellers
An extreme (45 degrees or more) pitch angle

what i would like to see for fighters is blueprints. fighters, now another part of your inventory rather than something tied to your hangar, could be turned into blueprints at a research station, put a factory block on your ship and your ship can now consume advanced goods (the same kind that you turn into turrets at a turret factory, meaning you also need cargo space) to automatically produce fighters according to a blueprint that you equip in an upgrade slot. having multiple blueprints equipped would let you manufacture several types of fighters in parallel.

of course, factory blocks would need to be huge to spit out more than a fighter every minute or so, and would need loads of engineers and mechanics

maybe in the same vein make it so that there's some way to manufacture turrets and upgrades on your own, maybe by transforming turret factories into "blueprint factories" and letting you do all blueprinting research there. maybe there could be a system like
>put 5 identical items in, get blueprint of said item
>put 5 of same rarity, get a blueprint of the same rarity/material
>put less, and it's a % chance to get the same rarity/material, else you get the rarity below

>>

Here's a hint: filter inserters.
There are some good designs out there on how to do it, but you know, you should at least experiment yourself first.

Also, later on you get the option to turn heavy fuel into a wood substitute I'm fairly sure, so I've even heard of people just cutting down wood and inserting it into their systems completely manually.
As filthy and plebian as it is, it is somewhat viable if overall slightly more expensive, considering once set up, greenhouses are practically free.

religion just provides an easy set of axioms that people can base their beliefs on without having to question them too much and also gives them various sets of rituals they can perform to make themselves feel better
useful when you simply don't have the time or desire to sit around and philosophize all day to come up with these things yourself
>>
>>169248242
Christianity is a Theistic religion.

"Christian Agnostics practice a distinct form of agnosticism that applies only to the properties of God. They hold that it is difficult or impossible to be sure of anything beyond the basic tenets of the Christian faith. They believe that God exists, that Jesus has a special relationship with him and is in some way divine, and that God should be worshipped. This belief system has deep roots in Judaism and the early days of the Church."

" [A] person who is immensely attracted by Christ and who seeks to show his spirit, to meet the challenges, hardships and sorrows of life in the light of that spirit, but who, though he is sure of many Christian truths, feels that he cannot honestly and conscientiously 'sign on the dotted line' that he believes certain theological ideas about which some branches of the church dogmatize...His intellectual integrity makes him say about many things, 'It may be so. I do not know'. " - Methodist minister Dr. Leslie Weatherhead

i hesitate to go full *tip*ping, but kind of
people generally want to have some sort of meaning and goal and purpose to their existence
religion provides these things in a very clear and concrete manner, in that "things are this way because god said so and had it written down in this book", and if one ever has any concerns they can just read the book or go to the local priest who is very familiar with said book and also the only person in the village who can read, or for a more modern setting, one of the few people in town who are willing to read a book that long and full of abstract metaphors and antiquated phrases, and rather easily get the clear and concrete answers they want
if one is to reject religion, they'll eventually have to come to the conclusion that any beliefs they come up with are, at the most fundamental levels, based on something inherently illogical and meaningless
understandably, a lot of people have difficulties trying to make themselves believe in something that they know to be meaningless, and some simply may not be able to do so, but without religion one simply has no choice
but for, say, a peasant farmer in the middle ages, religion is a fairly easy solution to this problem, and so religion has been created many times in many cultures and persisted to the current day
>>169249751
thing is, the kind of people who do those things would likely have done it anyway with or without religion
there are people who kill senselessly and meddle in other people's business with or without religious justification, and i doubt they'd be any less common without it
>>
>>169252548
>thing is, the kind of people who do those things would likely have done it anyway with or without religion
I somewhat agree, but at least they don't have the shield of religion to hide behind, and we can retaliate against them.

That being said, I do think there's alot less of these kinds of people when there isn't some grand ideology that permeates in a society (IE communism, religion, natsoc), for example, we don't have any Inquisition or secret police in most civilized countries. (or at least, it's far less prevalent)

You bet bby.

>If you are, are swivel mounts going to be made so tanks can have turrets?
Already multigrid confirmed. You'll buy a gun system off the shelf, then how you feed/armor it is entirely up to you. You can go into battle with a fully stabilized gun with a 300mm mantlet, or you can weld an open breach to the side of your car with only a single round jammed inside of it.

The current turrets are and always have been placeholder.

>Also, is the LP cap going to stay the same forever? Right now it seems like it's just keeping me a bit away from building the things I really want.

Within reason. We'll do balance changes as required, but nothing like changing a module that costs 50 to cost 5000. Most modules you see in the game won't survive the next few updates anyway, with the possible exception of the thrusters.

There really isn't a situation where you'll be wanting for LP if you're building reasonably. Anything over that cap will just land you with a laggy piece of shit. Funnily enough though, this becomes less of an issue in multiplayer.

Anyone curious how ground is going?

The wheels are set up to behave like a trophy truck's suspension, and the panels are RHA, 30-200 mm thick for COM balance.

Unity3d WheelCollider is what you probably mean.

As much as I hate it, REMdev wasn't willing to program a system from scratch until I could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt it was useless. Almost got my way, but he pulled some spooky shit and suddenly it started working again.

>Did you have to deal with the car not staying level by half a degree or so?
No, we had to deal with the vehicles being flung at 5000m/s straight upwards, leaving a cloud a debris. Some amazing things are possible with default unity shit. Most of them are failing in such a spectacular way.

Worth noting we'll have different types of suspensions and wheels for different jobs. Rock crawling, drifting, racing, and trophy...trucking like webm related.

>Mod introduces a jump drive to reach other planets
>Warp drive just moves the ship and any players in it to the appropriate server for that planet.
Presumably, you could get a lot of people on the "server" as long as not everyone goes to the same planet at once.
>>
>>169278953
GMOD did this. Really clunky, usually better to join through the server list.

Ultima online sort of has this. There are invisible "Server lines" on the map that relatively seamlessly transfer players from one machine to another.

People used to exploit them in PVP if they were losing , run pararellel to a server line and keep hopping from on side to the other.

Then i'd suppose a link to a pastebin for the various sim in the OP might be ideal if they are too many

After all there is still a good 700 characters left in the OP

As soon as anyone actually starts posting about it or their work in it, we can do that, but for now it's just a circuit sim that we can recommend to anyone that asks about it.

A link to sim pastebin would be perfect indeed.

Not to stir up the shitstorm, but there are a number of games in the OP that are rarely discussed here.
Like it was suggested, a link in the OP to "recommended" games, sims, programs and etc. pastebin would do us all good.

The analog signal slider controls in skywanderers gave me an idea

What if you could link a generator to logic, with a digital input turning the generator off or on and an analog input scaling the generator down from 100%. What if then, generators worked so that more power generates more heat which causes electronics and stuff around the ship to work more slowly the smaller the ship is in relation to the heat generated, and at certain threshholds the heat generated would be lethal to players and eventually damage the ship?

so for example, a small generator throttled down a little would never cause any major overheating no matter how tiny your ship is, whereas shoving the slider all the way to max for two small generators would slowly overheat a tiny ship and cause it to blow up.

maybe even toss in a way to read an analog value from a thermometer so you can setup automatic power generator throttling

I agree but I do think we can minimize them, or at the very least, no create an system where such behaviours are leaglly enforced or justified.

I'm tired of engineering games for the moment.
What non engineering games will have the most transferable skill to engineering games?
