Each spec has different situations where it shines. That being said, Affliction is probably the safest choice. Destro is very niche because it's best on 2 target cleave situations, and Demo is just a pain in the ass to play really well.

Play Assassination Rogue. It's like Feral, but effective. Boomkin is fine, but they have the worst single target in the entire game. Guardian and Restoration are top tier, and everybody keeps a token Balance druid around as their AOE bitch, but I honestly don't remember the last time I saw a Feral anywhere.

With the way AP and Legendaries work in Legion, it's actually easier to maintain two classes than it is to maintain two specs. And I always DPS for solo anyway, since the queues aren't bad and I can carry the group better in my offspec dps than I can just tanking everything and waiting for shitters to kill it.

I can't really speak from experience, but ilvl is what's going to kill you not class (as a rogue). The content in Legion is all way overtuned which puts a huge burden on the DPS. Good DPS are very much in demand. AotC probably helps, but there are a lot of people out there who won't even give you a second look if you're sub 890.

That said, I'm sure you'll find your way into groups and getting geared isn't as hard as some people would have you believe. Play smart. Get carried as high as possible every week for your mythic cache, do your emissaries, do WQs for titanforge chances, do LFR to help farm up your legendaries, do whatever M+ you can, etc.

Because you're starting so late, AP is going to be a limiting factor for you. But if you play smart, you should be at least in the 870s by the time you're allowed to start the real grind.

Feral has downtime because as long as you aren't wasting combo points or energy, you aren't losing damage and it has to juggle a buff and dots. To clarify a few things before you go on spreading misinformation:
