We've talked about our favorite 'Mechs, our favorite provinces & worlds, our favorite regiments. So now I ask: as a fan of the FWLM, what is your favorite battle they've ever fought? Did you love the goal line stand of the Bolan Defenders during the First Succession War? The jackass buffoonery of the 2nd Regulan Hussars during the events of Ideal War? The knife-fighting between the Knights of the Inner Sphere and the Smoke Jaguars in the Dhuan Swamp on Huntress? What FWLM battle do you enjoy reading about the most?


For me, it has to be the Battle of Xanthe III during the Andurien Secession. The 15th Marik Militia is shattered, the 10th Militia surrounded when hidden Andurien 'Mechs ambush them in the city of Estan. The 10th Militia holds out against all odds for weeks until they find a weak spot in the Andurien lines. Their counter-attack rips a hole in the rebel formations, allowing light forces to sally into the Andurien rear areas and convincing the rebels to pull back enough that the FWLM regiments are saved from annihilation. Reinforcements eventually arrive and drive the Defenders of Andurien off-world, and the 10th Militia's commander is promoted and given command of the entire Marik Militia organization.


A close second is the Phact Finding Mission during the War of 3039. The 2nd Oriente Hussars conduct a string of raids across the Sarna March, kitting Old Kentucky, Chamdo, and Reballa, all of which went off without a hitch. On the final raid target of Phact, however, the Crazy Second run across a full RCT. Stuck on a hostile world and outnumbered five to one, the 2nd Hussars led the Lyran troops on a merry chase for three weeks, keeping the RCT pinned down and unable to contribute to the invasion of the Draconis Combine, before they are able to extract themselves. The 9th Marik Militia, dispatched to help pull the Hussars off-world, divert to Capella upon hearing of the Second Oriente's withdrawal and smash Blandford's Grenadiers for the Hell of it.

It's probably more useful in multiplayer than the campaign to flush out campers clustered together behind terrain. Though it would be good to take out mission objectives and avoid turret defenses, especially if you are using the mekpak version that has the artillery range indicator added that is tied in to torso pitch.

I was thinking about the original JR7-A Jenner which carried only a single large laser for armament and had a full dozen heat sinks. I think some of the early lore even suggested the large laser was mounted on a turret. The -A reminds me of a slower, jump-capable Hussar, the ultra-fast Star League 'Mech armed with a single ER large laser but with only 1.5 tons of armor.

While the heavily armed JR7-D is the quintessential knife in the back, the -F variant, which trades the SRM-4 and volatile ammo for three additional tons or armor, is a much more hardy machine. Of all the light 'Mechs slated to be included, the Jenner I suspect will prove to be among the most deadly.

That said, I let my mind wander across the even faster chassis available to see if I could come up with something equally deadly.

If my understanding of the Hardpoint system proves correct, by removing the jump jets, you could modify a SDR-5K Spider to carry a single chest mounted large laser and put a small laser in each arm. This would allow it to snipe at scouts from range and also rush in for a physical attack, including the two small lasers.

The LCT-3V Locust, armed with a two medium lasers in the center torso and a machine gun in each arm offers some nice possibilities as well. If the "Support" Hardpoint shakes out, the machine guns could be replaced with small lasers and the armor restored to the original 4 tons. While the armament is exactly the same, this is an improvement over the -1E since the -3V houses the medium lasers in the center torso instead of in the lightly armored and vulnerable arms. I affectionately refer to this as the "Crack Zombie."

Last, the CDA-3C Cicada could replace it's leg mounted machine guns with small lasers and add an additional ton of badly needed armor or even two tons of armor if the eleventh heat sink was dropped. No one likes a PPC to the rear, especially given the high probability of it penetrating into the structure with just a single shot. The PPC could also be downgraded to a large laser and the armor increased to a total of 8 tons, giving it close to maximum armor and making it a tough little machine, i.e. the "Swamp" Cicada.

As I looked at these, it occurred to me the ubiquitous machine gun was invariably the first thing to go. Without infantry, the need for a burst-fire weapon is basically gone and if the "Support" Hardpoint system makes it possible to swap small lasers for machine guns, it seems to be a pretty obvious improvement. Same range, increased damage, zero ammunition liability and it weighs less overall to boot. Sure they generate one heat but I don't see that as a major drawback. In addition, if I recall correctly, small lasers, machine guns and flamers are "added" to physical attacks giving them some utility even with their extremely limited range, especially on faster machines that can attack and then withdraw.

Another tangent that occurred to me, this one while I was dreaming up the Cicada.

Maximum armor is probably one of the best ways to maximize profit and minimize expenses. Once a 'Mech starts taking critical damage, the bills start mounting up fast. It will be interesting to see how this works out in the game. I know plenty of people who automatically run for max armor on every 'Mech they play in TT and invariably if forced to play stock reach for the TDR-5S, WHM-6D and CN9-AL.

I think PvE builds might run toward armor, but PvP builds might not. In MW4 and MWO, we routinely shaved armor off locations with low hit chances, legs and heads mostly. Now, the hit spread is going to be more uniform in this, but I still expect to see at least some of that kind of design work.

For your speed demons, I like that Locust idea, its clever.

I think its hard to say yet which are going to be the best without some games to play and see how essential jets are for smalls. In TT smalls without them are basically dog meat unless they are 8/12 or better, something that can really book, even in terrain that costs extra MPs.

Also, now by detaching accel/decel and torso speed from engine rating for weight classes, they're guaranteed to make bad mechs worse. Where an Atlas could previously rely on torso twist quirks and a 350-360 engine rating to give it just enough torso mobility to roll damage, they're most likely now going to be considerably slower even if you fully invest into the upper torso skill tree portion.

I think a variation of a sphere grid system for skills would work out better than linear trees. Skills would be bought in-out or out-in, both would work. Unique things would be stashed along certain paths to encourage building towards those unique qwerknodes, but that would increase the amount of work on the trees to (tree * num_chassis). Top performers will now be even better, as shit mechs with poor engine ratings will be even worse. By removing all mobility quirks, mechs become notably clunkier to move. Unless niggy piggy gives all engines acceleration, deceleration and torso twist speed values equal to having 50%/50%/25% quirks on them, then mechs will not be able to torso twist or move as well as before. A LOT of shit mechs are extremely reliant on their increased mobility from quirks to survive with less firepower than the top performers.

This will enforce nigger faggot ass style firing line gameplay even harder, where the first player to peek their head out will get pounded harder than your mother on a work day.

It will also enforce people to pick mechs with the best values right out the gate even more, as you will no longer have the capability to really influence your mechs mobility profile through this new, bloated skill tree system.

If you find the game in a slower form with less capacity for player input mattering better, then I highly suggest you take up a gambling habit.

How is that an issue? Those are posterchilds for why boating is a problem. Boating is inherently better in every situation by default. It's made even stronger if you can strengthen one type of weapon easier than all weapons at once, like how weapon modules work now, or how divergent weapon skilltrees work in the PTS.

More specialization of damage type, more specialization of range, less weapon groups, all lead to simpler, easier, and more efficient gameplay.

Most mechs in the lore weren't specialists of one weapon, and those that were, were considered incredibly strong. That's fine for the lore, this is a multiplayer game that needs balance outside of point systems.

Out of all the maps in the game Crimson has the LEAST strategic opportunities. Narrow angles make for turtle matches because it's difficult to be aggressive as a team when there's only room for one mech. Extremely long flank routes are useless for anything other than the fastest lights and even then if they are caught they have no way to fall back. A good 60% of the map is never used at all. Honestly it's just not a very enjoyable map at all because every game is just exactly the same game of waiting around until one team pushes the top floor unless the enemy team is on top in which case they push the bottom floor and then it's just more waiting around. Even the old Terra Therma was better.

In my opinion Caustic Valley is the only good map in the game because it's the only one remaining from the original set. It's just a simple layout and simplicity is always better in map design. All of the originals were good maps and I have no idea why they thought that adding four players to both teams would require them to make the maps three times larger.

Mining Collective is also a nice layout but has way too much "detail" that bogs down visual clarity and performance.

It has players on and off but mostly been coordinating drop times and having the most activity on patch days and the weekends to test out the new content and report feedback.

The latest patch did add the AI bots to all gameplay modes so there are consistent targets to go up against in the servers now, which should improve retention as it seems a good number of people didn't want to be the first person in an empty server waiting for other players to show up.

There is an HGA Discord channel that was set up around July or so that usually has about 50 people on at any given time which is probably the fastest way currently to get matches going in an organized fashion.

That's not the only reason, it also gives you longer range on lockons, so you can get scouting cbills, and you get significantly faster target data so you can know which side torso is about to pop, and it lets you lock on shut down mechs nearby.

Range is better than cooldown for the MPLs anyways, and the TBR can always take both and choose not to take seismic if it wants for little loss.

Ultimately though just taking the 10% range is more than fine though, since you don't really need cooldown very much on the MPLs except to overheat yourself faster. TBR is definitely the superior platform between it and the EBJ for virtually every build the two of them can both run.

If it's the difference between using a trial mech or a mech of your own, I'd go with the Hunchie over the Blackjack, but that's me.

And you won't. They don't have the quirks listed in the store, if you want to see them you have to look in game at each mech individually.

I'm seeing the LRM80 build a lot more than the 6 laser build. Though I am seeing a few blow their load of lasers all over a locust they happen to catch in their crosshairs. It ain't pretty.

Soooo i installed this game last night and did the training thing, now i have 5 million credits what is a good robot i should buy first?

you don't buy anything yet. You run trial mechs for your first 25 matches and work up your cadet bonuses then you take your 20ish million and look for a mech to get. Good places to look is youtube, as there's a lot of good mechs out there, it all depends on the weight you want to play. Fastest queues for quickplay, play a light. Most versatility, get a Timber Wolf. Clan mechs are going to cost you more than IS mechs, you could probably 2-3 good IS mechs with what you'll have after your 25 cadet matches, you'll probably only be able to get 1 good Clan mech though.

With the big patch though, it might not be bad to just keep playing trial mechs until the big patch hits to see where things fall. Get a good feel for what you like and what you don't. Some people don't like certain weapons or roles that mechs can play.
