We don't have an official steam or discord group. If anyone posts in the thread about any "official" or not steam or discord groups, promising MP or not, be sure it's a shitposter group known for organizing raids and shitposting in the thread. They are known for false-flagging.

How fares your empire, /gsg/?

This day in history, February 19th:

Initial operations are highly successful, with minimal losses for the Guomin Geming Jun and major defeats for Japanese forces. Although Jiang does nothing to quell the sense among the men that victory is inevitable, he knows better than to draw any great conclusions based off of this: the soldiers encountered so far by the Second Juntuan are mere scouts, a few brigades of soldiers prodding at the extreme ends of the lands which fell under their control when Taiyuan fell.

Although the early victories earn rousing cheers and keep the spirits of the soldiers high, he knows that the true test is to come. Only more Japanese will be encountered as they march forward.

Well anon, the first trick is to be an incurable autist.

I don't know, I enjoy it quite a lot. But I also actually have fun with the OOB; even if I find it a little tedious, I usually do really like doing it. That's where most people trip up.

As for everything else, you just need to know how the different command levels work, how supply is likely to fuck you, and other things like that (to be successful, anyway). Oh, and having garrisons to put down revolts, of course.

So long as you play smart and play aware it's actually really fun, until it gets too simple. The one major downside of HoI3 is that there really is a "proper" way to play, so long as you have the IC to pull it off, and it gets quite boring because of that. All the best divisional types for pretty much any situation are all mostly identical.

By the evening of December 5th, Taiyuan has been retaken by the Japanese, and forces under Yan who had defected to Mao in the region north of Taiyuan have been cut off by a Japanese armored push to the south. Isolated and with the only major city in the region captured by their enemies, their destruction is certain; even if it wished to, the Guomin Geming Jun cannot reach them in time. Yet there is hope that it will be able to retake Taiyuan, at least, and do justice to their fallen leader.

The first major Japanese force is encountered the following evening at Hejian: a group of elite infantry, two tank divisions, and three infantry divisions, all grouped south of Tianjin. The surprising amount of armor is both worrying and frustrating for Jiang, who had hopes to capture Beijing before the Kwantung could reorient.

Nevertheless, it appears that the Imperial Japanese promise of reinforcements to the Kwantung were at least somewhat facetious; the highest-ranking officer that Jiang's subordinate General, Xu Yongchang, can identify is a Captain. It appears the Kwantung is operating largely without Imperial support, despite last year's proclamation.

Even so, two tank divisions are nothing to trifle with. Jiang orders reinforcements to Hejian, although the ultimate goals of Operation Yanqiu are maintained.

Typically what I do is play long enough to take a couple screenshots, write, and go back to playing. The way that I like doing it is to play at night and get 5-10 screenshots ahead of where I am during the day, then gradually post and play during the day until I catch up to myself, then put posting on hold again for that night.

For this AAR though, because I had limited time, I played the whole AAR through ahead-of-time and am just now writing it. Right now I'm about 25 written posts ahead of where the posting is at right now, and I have probably somewhere around 125 posts left to write up.

Because, for some completely unknowable reason, I actually like /gsg/

Also I just like doing AARs. I've gotten to that point where just playing Paradox games isn't fun anymore, so I have to construct a narrative to have real fun with it. It also challenges me to put rules on myself and how I play, like in the CK2 AAR where I had house rules I had to follow.

It does get ridiculously tedious by the end of an AAR though--by that point I'm always happy that it's over.

Cont from last night
>The afternoon of March 11, 1936

Reactionary elements within the government made their moves before President Zapata had given up the ghost. Quickly securing key installations within Mexico City the counter-revolutionaries marched into the Chamber of Deputies and announced the end of the Socialist Republic of Mexico. Generals Garza and Treviño took control of the situation and a military junta convened by sunset.

Resistance to the Junta is light and scattered as the leftists struggle to form a coherent command structure.

In the meantime the northern pocket of Shanxi troops has been isolated and destroyed, but there is hope yet for Taiyuan: under the operational command of the excellent General Fu Zuoyi, the Japanese mobile forces in Fenyang are broken, and the First Jun moves into position, alongside communist forces, to exploit the breach. Although the tank division which served to pocket Mao's north group is still at the edge of Taiyuan, it's hoped that forces of the Second and Third Armies, rushing from the east, will be able to capture mountain positions in time to engage and pin it until Taiyuan can be secured.

Yet this hope is becoming more and more illusory, as masses of Kwantung forces, many with tanks to support them, roll into the fields south of Beijing. Although the Armies fight well for now, they are already becoming exhausted and tied down. Whether or not the full extent of the defensive line called for in Stage 2 of Operation Yanqiu can be achieved is uncertain, much less the capture of Beijing, or the launching of Case Bai Qi.

Unfortunately, the Japanese predicted the movement of the First Jun. An entire corps of soldiers has arrived in Taiyuan, far too many for the First Jun to shake without additional support. For the time being, it digs in and waits for better news from the east, if it is forthcoming.

With the exception of the First Cavalry Division, that is, the only cavalry group in the entire Guomin Geming Jun. Its commander, Feng Yuxian, takes the initiative and launches an assault on Japanese positions in Fangshan, in the hopes that surrounding the Japanese forces in Taiyuan on multiple sides will allow the First Jun, with support from communist forces, to capture Taiyuan on their own. It is a dim hope, but with little else to do, Feng makes the decision to do whatever he might to push the Japanese back.

It depends, sometimes I do but most of the time I just try to complete a strategic objective, or go until the point where the AAR gets boring to the audience. I finished the Napoleon AAR, but the CK2 AAR I stopped after it got too easy, and this AAR I just had a strategic goal in mind.

Despite being a god sent blessing for the Reactionaries the murder of President Zapata is still a crime that cannot go unpunished. Working on information from witnesses and anonymous informants we have received intelligence that leads us to believe the assassin is hiding in Coyoacan, ten kilometres south of Zocalo Square.

The interim President made his first official announcement today. As the citizens of Mexico stood on edge crowded around radios nation wide General Garza confirmed that the 1936 General Election was suspended indefinitely. Mexicans whisper in the streets of middle of the night raids against suspected socialists and of so called "death flights" being flown by the Mexican Air Force.

For his rapid thinking in encircling the enemy and keeping Xu Yongchang's forces in the fight, Yang Aiyuan is granted the Order of the Sacred Tripod, Red Grand Cordon and Medal of the Brilliant Light, A-2 in a special ceremony on the grounds of the fighting two days later, after Jiang was flown in especially to present them to him. He is the first officer decorated for action in the Second Sino-Japanese war, ahead of even Jiang himself.

The assassin of President Zapata was captured in the early morning after police kicked in the door of 23 year old immigrant Ramón Mercader. Mercader, a radical socialist, was disillusioned with Zapata's policies and believed that the Presidents death would spark a second revolution - or so he claims. The police have been searching his home for hours but it appears he expected to be captures and set about burning any documents that tie him to foreign governments. The singed remains of British and French stationary were found in his fireplace and the murder weapon, an ice pick, was found stuffed in the back corner of a crawl space.

Yang Aiyuan wastes no time proving to the Premier that he is a man of determination and action, worthy of the awards with which he has been decorated. On the morning of the 27th of December, just a day after the ceremony, elements of Aiyuan's Eighth Jun ford the Yongding and seize Tianjin from a skeleton force of Japanese defenders. A message is sent to the Premier, who had already flown back to the Second Juntuan after a brief inspection of the troops: "I have crossed the river and seized the gates. Beijing awaits the coming of our arms."

The First of January, one-thousand nine-hundred and thirty-eight years since the birth of Christ. Thirty-one days yet remain until the Year of the Tiger, yet this is nevertheless an especially auspicious day.

The unexpected victories of the Guomin Geming Jun, especially in the fording of the Yongding and capture of Tianjin, has galvanized support for Jiang. The peasants are now silent on his decision to delay while the war engulfed Shanxi, politicians smile and obey, and his Generals nod approvingly.

And so the first of the many days unlooked-for have arrived: the day when the Kuomintang is unified behind a single man. In this time, in this day, there is no room for traitors. Chen Guofu is seized in his small home in Nanjing, paraded before a sham council of the judiciary, and hanged as a traitor for stealing money from the peasantry.

In his place arrive two men loyal to Jiang, and the new Kuomintang: Bai Chongxi, a man with many production connections able to gather resources to slow China's mounting rare materials problem, becomes Minister of Armaments, while Kong Xiangxi, a born leader, is chosen to chair the Ministry of Internal Security. Not only does this assure that the Republic is well-led, it breaks the last dangerous power-bloc within the Kuomintang.

I've noticed something in EU4 that might be helpful if you want to move from Europe to colonial regions. If you just move there and colonize you'll not get tordesillas claim (assuming you are catholic nation) and later some other country can get it and slow down your colonisation and destroy your realations with papacy. So better way to move to colonial region is to first create colonial nation/nations there and later after you move conquer them - this way you will have tordesillas claim on those colonial regions.

More good news arrives in the early hours of the following morning: beset on three sides by divisions under the First Jun, a Japanese tank division in Taigu has retreated with heavy losses. This bypasses the river to the south of Taiyuan, potentially opening the city for an assault by members of the First Jun alone, without support from the rest of the Second Juntuan.

Jiang gives orders to reorganize, resupply, and prepare to attempt an assault without support as soon as is possible. He still hopes to secure the body of Xishan for burial in Beijing as a symbol for the Guomin Geming Jun.

News of two more critical victories arrive shortly thereafter. Later on the same day, news that Yongqing, just south of Beijing, had been seized with heavy Kwantung losses is met with elation in Nanjing, as all that remains to begin Phase 3 of Operation Yanqiu is the securing of the ford to the northwest of the city.

Two days later, equally good news--if of a more muted nature--arrives: although suffering heavy losses, Chinese forces from the Second Juntuan seize the highly-defensible mountain passes at Laiyuan. This not only shortens the front, but will make it easier to hold and free up forces for the eventual launching of Case Bai Qi--provided, of course, the fords at Beijing can be secured, and the city can be properly encircled.
>>
>>168840847
Forcing that from 1444 makes more sense, doesn't it? Why is it easier in 1492? I've always made it whenever I wanted.
>>
>>168840587
Lucky nations makes the countries whose power waned over the game's timeframe powerful all the way from 1444-1821. It can lead to ridiculousness like France and England being absolute powerhouses in the 15th century and the Ottomans having a continent-spanning and technologically-advanced empire right into the 19th century.

Although it technically makes historically-significant countries perform well it does this at the expense of game balance and by giving the AI retarded bonuses. It's basically a crutch for poor coding.

My ideal solution for the issue would be to replace lucky nations with game mechanics or events that allow for countries which follow the same criteria and techniques as the great powers to fulfil their historic ambitions, instead of just tying it down to specific tags.

>November 9, 1936

The United States of America is shattered. It began with Douglas MacArthur and his men crossing the Potomac River and announcing that the 1936 Election would not go ahead as planned. The western states quickly met in Sacramento and announced their secession from the Union. Within hours Huey Long declared the United States a dead nation and Louisiana seceded from the nation, bringing most states south of the Mason-Dixon line with them. Seeing their chance the Combined Syndicates of America declared an open revolt against Washington and sought to ally themselves with the American Union State to no avail. Canada, Japan, Cuba, and others have taken this opportunity to seize American possessions abroad including Alaska, Guam, Panama, and the Pacific Islands. New England itself has been occupied by Canada.

Now is our chance for revenge. For decades the Gringo have oppressed us and kept us under their foot. Now with their nation in disarray they cannot possibly prevent us from restoring that which is rightfully ours. From San Francisco bay to the Gulf Coast, Mexico will rise once more.

Disaster! Although garrisons were prepared to defend the coast, it appears they are so undermanned, and the Japanese marines so well-trained, that they are simply being cut through as a scythe cuts through grain. The beleaguered Qingdao Zhubingshi desperately attempts to hold, but they are slowly but surely being thrown back from the coast.

He Yingqin orders three emergency divisions held in reserve to Qingdao immediately to hold off the Japanese and secure the port--should it fall before they arrive--but he and Jiang are both nervous. Should the Japanese land significant forces to the south, a full Jun or more might need to be diverted from the assault, and Case Bai Qi, and the critical encirclement of Kwantung forces that it represents, might fail.

Yet Jiang will receive worse news before the night is over: the Republic has run through its entire rare materials stockpiles. It will now be forced to survive on its own production alone. Before the end of the week factories grind to a halt, and tens of thousands of workers are out of work, requiring government compensation.

With hostile landings in Qingdao and a worsening supply situation, an infuriated Jiang orders Yang Aiyuan, the "Marshal of the East," to attempt to encircle Beijing on his own, using just the position of Tianjin which he has secured, without further support. The order is borderline suicidal, but Aiyuan understands how dire the situation is and agrees to proceed with the operation.

To everyone's surprise, he is successful: despite a major supply shortage and simultaneous assault in Tianjin, Aiyuan's Eighth Jun breaks the Japanese defensive position at Jixian, inflicting almost two-to-one casualties in the process. Although his men have suffered major losses and are disorganized, he reassures Jiang that they will be ready to proceed in attempting to close the pocket within a matter of days. Although the Premier is still distressed, if Beijing can be encircled and the Qingdao assault repelled, the Republic will be in a much stronger position.

Yet the situation in Qingdao is rapidly falling apart. The city itself, with its critical port, has fallen to a large invasion force of Japanese marines, who are now being supplied by the IJN. The emergency divisions which were being routed from He are still distant, and Jiang is pressingly concerned about the status of the front and the potential necessity of recalling divisions to deal with the breach.

He constantly reassures the Premier that the situation is well under control and that Qingdao will return to Chinese control before the end of the month, but even if he is correct he cannot efface the obvious: the Republic's garrison divisions are insufficient, and if the coast is to be struck again, at least one Jun will need to be rerouted south to protect the critical ports surrounding Nanjing. It is a bitter cup to drink, especially with Case Bai Qi so close to potential execution.

Not really technological decay either. Weak political forces moving in and the inability for the government to administer an empire caused the collapse of empire-wide infrastructure projects which supported large cities.

Rome could not survive a population of hundreds of thousands without extensive supply networks to ship grains from the breadbasket of the empires. So people left the cities, because no government existed that could wield that level of political strength. Its why few cities in Europe acquired that size until after a thousand years of centralization.

With supreme reluctance and regret, Jiang is forced to admit the strategic infeasibility of Yanqiu. The front line must be immediately shortened to free up a Jun to travel south, not lengthened further. And the strategic resource stockpiles of Beijing must be seized as soon as possible to put as many factories in the Republic to work as they might, not after long delay.

Although Aiyuan worked a miracle in assaulting from the besieged and devastated Tianjin, the city behind him has not gotten any chance to repair, and his forces sit in the hilly terrain north of Beijing frequently out of supply from Nanjing. Aiyuan continues to reassure Jiang that his forces will be able to move with but a little more delay, but the Premier realizes these are merely the words of a General who does not wish to disappoint his commander, especially after being entrusted with so many critical operations; the Eighth Jun is effectively immobile.

Therefore, reluctantly, Jiang orders Xue Yue of the Third Jun to assault Beijing from the south, at Yongqing. After a full and furious week of fighting, it is done: Beijing, the city of the Manchu Emperors, has been captured, and the Yongding forded again.

Although He would much rather keep the situation in Qingdao as far from Jiang's ears as possible, Jiang's Juntuan HQ is directly in the path of the traincars of troops rattling by, and his friend at the Guomin Geming Jun HQ cannot hide that even further emergency divisions have been routed to Qingdao in an attempt to keep control of the situation.

Although the Qingdao Zhubingshi has been entirely encircled and cut down to a man by the Japanese marines, however, the emergency divisions have arrived in time to prevent the Japanese forces from spilling out from the peninsula, which would have been the greatest threat. The generals move toward Qingdao, and unless significant Japanese reinforcements arrive the city should not only be retaken, but tens of thousands of Japanese troops will be taken prisoner.

News arrives on the final day of January that Tianyuan has been captured by a combined army of communists and the First Jun... and turned over to the Maoist forces.

Jiang is beside himself with fury, until he hears the conditions of the city's surrender: the remains of Xishan will be turned over to the Guomin Geming Jun for burial in Beijing, as per Jiang's initial intentions. Although he still silently fumes that the communists have gained yet another stronghold, the terms are at least reasonable; his Generals have saved him from being embarrassed, as he would have been had Xishan's remains not been taken to Beijing per his orders.

With Taiyuan captured, the Premier allows himself time to reflect upon the status of the advance. Although Yanqiu has been deviated from, save for Phase 3 it has largely been accomplished. Beijing is in Republican hands, Taiyuan has been secured, and although the Japanese yet hold the mountains, the Yongding is largely held in force by the Guomin Geming Jun, providing a strong defensive position for the armies.

Yet the front is still long, and must be shortened if there is any hope of pulling even just a single Jun south to defend the coast. Much of Jiang's time is invested in thinking on one key matter: how to remove the Japanese forces from the mountains.

The solution Jiang hits upon is a modification of Case Bai Qi. The initial Case was, he now acknowledges, over-optimistic. Its execution is simply untenable while the Kwantung is able to mobilize the amount of forces against him that it clearly is, and while one of his own Jun must be placed on coastal defense. But if the mountainous region to the northwest of Beijing were captured to secure the flank, then the Guomin Geming Jun could launch from Taiyuan and the southwest of Beijing to encircle the Japanese defenders in the mountains. If they moved rapidly, they might even be able to encircle one of the Kwantung's tank divisions--a mighty prize indeed.

This would shorten the front, capture tens of thousands of Kwantung forces that they cannot afford to lose, and fully and finally free a Jun for operations on the coast. And, perhaps more importantly, since the prior version of Case Bai Qi was never announced to the public, it will not make Jiang appear foolish to revise it in such a manner.

As such, the Premier announces the effective success of Operation Yanqiu, officially closing that operation, and informs his generals of the immediate execution of Case Bai Qi.

The two main Jun operating in the revised Case Bai Qi are the First Jun and the Sixth Jun.

The First Jun were the operational group which stabilized east Shanxi under the Maoist forces, and are under the command of German general von Falkenhausen. When HAPRO was recalled from the Republic, the one concession that Hitler's state permitted was von Falkenhausen's staying behind as an "adviser." In reality, Falkenhausen is very fond of the Chinese, and he refused to sit back and permit the Japanese to attack wantonly, so long as his government did not formally support them. While Jiang was initially uncertain about him, his expert leading of the First Jun has transformed them into one of the Guomin Geming Jun's ace formations. For his contributions to the war and his capture of Taiyuan, von Falkenhausen is indeed one of the first foreigners to be awarded an Order of the Republic of China: in his case, the Order of the Sacred Tripod, Special Cravat.

The Sixth Jun under Liao Lei has been more quiet, but in some ways even more efficient. Liao is an expert General, although he has yet to gain much respect for his operations. He took part in several major assaults into the mountains already performed, and his men are well on their way to becoming experts at assaulting rough terrain. Although his selection was made largely because of his Jun's position rather than his own prestige, it would have been difficult for Jiang to select a more competent man to execute the northern pincer.

Over a week later troops are still moving into position and accumulating supply stockpiles for the execution of the revised Case Bai Qi, and Jiang is left with no recourse but to gnash his teeth. Even with the surveys of land he ordered, movement through the mountainous territory west of Beijing has been tortuously slow, and supply routes are virtually nonexistent. Even along the coast, where infrastructure is high and towns and cities abound, the movement of supply to centers such as Tianjin and Beijing is agonizingly slow.

As such, Jiang orders the Kuomintang National Congress to centralize the industry of China even further, instituting full production order and seizing any trucks and transports available if necessary. What little industrial power the Republic is able to manage despite its shortages must be used to the utmost effect, and, most importantly, any civilian materials which can be used to speed the transport of supply to the army are now considered state property.

The revised Case Bai Qi is proving just as frustrating to implement as its prior vision, however. After Cheng Qi's Jun in Tianjin operated independently and attempted to press forward against what it believed were undermanned Japanese divisions, they were thrown back forcibly by the rapid arrival of Kwantung tanks, leaving Tianjin under-defended. This forced Yang Aiyuan and the Eighth Jun remaining in place to guard the north, which has stalled the assault everywhere but Huailai.

And Huailai is not going well.

Although guarded only by poor garrisons, Huailai is violently mountainous, overwhelmingly defensible, and commanded by a proper General, Tatsumi Amamiya. Although Yu Jishi does his best to break the defensive stranglehold, the overwhelming number of Republican forces sent into Huailai--necessitated by the poor supply that means that some of them are likely to simply be forced to stop attacking now and then; the Guomin Geming Jun has rapidly learned that overwhelming numbers that ensure a continued assault are superior to risking an assault's failure due to lack of supply--prevent effective use of the narrow mountain passes. The encirclement of Japanese forces to the south cannot begin until the mountains are held, but when they shall fall--and how many Republican soldiers it will cost to take them--is the great question.

So in EU4, colonial flags are dynamically generated by taking the left half of the colonial master's flag, and the colour of the colonial territory for the right half.

Are there any mods which exist, or which could be made, to slightly change this process? To instead make it so that the dynamically-generated flag is produced by putting the whole of the colonial master's flag in the top left, and having the remaining three-quarters be the colonial territory's colour, like on the right side of this pic?

I think I'd like something like that a lot better.

The following day, however, some good news finally arrives: Qingdao, one of the largest ports in China, has been retaken for the Republic. It is unlikely the Japanese will risk sending additional reinforcements into Weihai, a relatively small port; while another Jun still needs to be diverted south so the strength of the individual garrisons might be augmented, it appears that no serious threat will come from the Qingdao assault.

Although the situation initially seemed hopeless, it appears the Japanese garrisons are no more well-prepared for sustained defense than the Chinese. They fall with surprising rapidity, and despite the difficulties of assaulting the position, Huailai, the great thorn in the side of the Guomin Geming Jun, is finally under Republican control. While more territory in the north must still be captured to prevent a flank, with a position across the Yongding under control it will be much easier to force the Japanese out of the highlands elsewhere.

It was only after he was proving so fucking wrong that its kind of hilarious and sad that people like Lenin showed up thinking that the proper way to go about bringing communism is making sure every state in the world is a "Marxist" dictatorship (of the """"""""""""""""""""""""""masses"""""""""""""""")

And what a prize it is: five divisions encircled, including three of the Kwantung's preciously rare tank groups.

A few days later, after careful consideration, Jiang decides to give his Generals the instructions for the original Case Bai Qi, and to label it as an expansion of the successful operation rather than the initial operation that was scaled down. Not only does this give Jiang the appearance of being a military genius, but it also makes him appear much more tactically flexible than he actually was; in reality, most of the positions necessary to launch the original Bai Qi had been taken already before the revised proposal was executed.

Even with this omission, however, Jiang has so far led the war excellently; a few unspoken words to protect his reputation might be excused.

One Jun must still be assigned to port defense, but Jiang believes sufficient forces will still be available to execute the operation, provided the front line is shortened. Jiang orders that portion of the operation to begin immediately, with the encirclement on temporary hold while the remainder of the Guomin Geming Jun's forces reposition, regroup, and reorganize.

I think it was about 30,000; that sounds right for 5 divisions, three tank, that had taken significant losses. I'm estimating though. Either way it was a major victory, though, especially because of the loss of the tanks. I don't have enough anti-tank capabilities to really fight them without isolating them, so their destruction was huge.

Meanwhile, with the front line shortened, it is finally possible to send a Jun south to take over the defense of the many ports around Nanjing from the undermanned garrisons currently holding them. The overwhelmingly average 5th Jun is selected for the job, and is sped south at once.

Simultaneously, the recently commissioned 50th Infantry Division is redeployed to Qingdao, which was only just recaptured fully from the last Japanese holdouts on the peninsula. It's hoped that the fully outfitted 50th, along with its artillery support, will be able to hold the port better against sustained assaults.

In a prior version it might have been good, but by 1.32 it's just awful. Scripted invasions (with horrible conditions, as will be seen later in the AAR), nations with only a handful of generals assigned, shit like that. Parts of it are good, but because of the scripted invasions and because some of the work for some tags are half-done, it's just flatly worse than vanilla.

Eight artillery brigades finish around the same time, and are routed to the front lines for distribution among the armed units which still lack them. Their integration will allow for the creation of three emergency divisions' worth of troops, which can be used to plug a defensive hole elsewhere on the line, or perhaps placed on coastal defense duties if necessary.

Nah, as China you need to have an entire army on every province, that's the whole point of Chinese manpower. You can afford a full corps of infantry for the IC of one armour division, plus then there's the fuel to consider.
>>
>>168860034
I'm not making armored, anon. I'm just making artillery. The KWANTUNG have armor--the Japanese army in China. The Kuomintang--me--utilize INF/INF/INF/ART.

And if that's not what you mean, largely I do have a full corps on every province already. That's why I need the artillery, to cut my frontage. Otherwise stacking penalty will be a worse enemy for me than the Japanese will.

Yet disaster strikes again at the worst possible time. Before Yan Xishan's 5th Jun can arrive in the area around Nanjing, the Japanese strike. The marines have learned the lesson of Qingdao well, and their landings are now simultaneous strikes on either side of Shanghai; if the Shanghai Zhubingshi moves to halt the landing of one, the other will land behind it and capture the port. The Zhubingshi therefore cannot resist their landing, although its commander swears to Jiang that he will defend Shanghai for as long as possible, so the 5th Jun will have time to push them out before they are able to push inland.

Thankfully, although they are still several days distant, the 5th Jun is close enough to be in operational range within a week. The only true threat comes from the landing of additional forces, which Japan did not risk in Qingdao. Jiang doubts they will risk it here either, especially if, as he suspects, spies were the ones who informed the IJN that there was a Jun en route to Shanghai.

Soon enough it becomes disturbingly evident that the 5th Jun will not be able to put down the invasion on its own. The Japanese marines move with astonishing speed, and after easily dispatching the Shanghai Zhubingshi, have already secured multiple ports. One group has taken up a defensive position with fortifications near Shanghai and have pinned the 5th Jun, while another rampages on the coast, securing additional ports and supply depots for the IJA. There are rumors among the few spies Jiang has available in Japan--and what little news he receives from occupied Shanghai--that a full invasion will soon be underway.

In a rage born of impotence, Jiang places Case Bai Qi on hold for the third time. The 2nd Jun, under Zhang Xueliang, is ordered south to assist in pushing the Japanese back into the sea.

With the port of Hangzhou already fallen to the Japanese and Ningbo about to fall, Jiang orders partisans within the captured territory to sabotage the infrastructure to slow the Japanese advance. With the armies heading from the north still weeks away, the only hope for the Chinese is to slow Japanese access to the interior until their defensive forces arrive. It is a bare hope, but it is what Jiang has. It is carried out, but unfortunately not without grim reprisals from the Japanese--thousands die in the Shanghai massacre.

After the continued impotence of Xishan's 5th Jun, an increasingly paranoid and furious Jiang worries that this is but the precursor of a full-scale assault on China by the entire IJA. He orders all three of the recently-commissioned emergency divisions in the north--China's last available reinforcements if she is to hold the northern line at its current extent--to rush south to "absolutely ensure that the Japanese dogs do not breach the interior."

Politicians in Nanjing sweat, but surely the Japanese cannot find success, not with two full Jun and three support divisions assigned to the fight? Truly the entire IJA would need to be sent against such odds. Surely?

After significant losses on both offense and defense and major destruction of the countryside, Xishan and the 5th Jun were able to recapture Changshu and reach the outskirts of Shanghai. What they find is not pleasant: the presence of a full corps of Japanese troops, and possibly the promise of still more. And the 5th is disorganized after suffering heavy losses, and truly in no state to go on an offensive.

With the fortifications of Changshu both largely demolished and facing the wrong direction, the warlord Long Yun, who is personally in command of the forward forces of the 5th Jun, begs Jiang for permission to hold position rather than assault. Jiang, already contemptuous of Yun, believes him but a coward and dismisses his advice; the three emergency divisions have arrived to threaten Hangzhou, and Jiang asserts that they will pin the marine group in Suzhou while Shanghai is retaken. Xishan is given the order to strike as soon as possible, and he meekly passes the order on to Yun.

In more hopeful news, the following day the 2nd Jun arrives in the mountainous terrain to the southeast of Ningbo. There are few Japanese troops here, and provided Ningbo can be secured quickly their isolation and capture should be a matter of ease. Although the terrain here is extremely poor, Jiang and He at the Guomin Geming Jun HQ anticipate that these troops might be able to return to the front line within a month, provided ideal conditions and the capture of Shanghai by the 5th Jun.

Not really much interesting to tell honestly, I declared war on Tibet because I wanted the bare bit of leadership you get from them, but the infrastructure to Lhasa literally didn't exist and none of my planes but transports could get there, so I got cocky and dropped a whole paratrooper division in there. After they don't take it within a few weeks I get nervous and drop another half-division in (I was worried about combat width so no more).

After two months both generals were up at least 3 ranks apiece, and even though the paratroopers were all down to something like 30 strength they took Lhasa and conquered Tibet in the end. They were all fucking heroes and they were used in every major engagement after that.

See, that's better than I can do. I can encircle, but I'm not brilliant or anything. Largely I just react. I could PLAN something like that, but executing it I'd probably cock it up or get cold feet and try something more standard.

>>168864186
No, but it's really not hard to learn. Just watch an OOB video, that's what trips everybody up. If you understand how the OOB works, how to organize it, and how the different levels work (like a general in an Army Group will do something different than a general in an Army) you'll be able to organize forces, and that's half the trouble. The rest is just trial-and-error with division comps and learning to properly garrison things. And obviously learning when supply is going to fuck you, which is... well, trial-and-error.

At the end of May, Germany announces the Anshluss of Austria. While this greatly increases tensions within Europe, it's a matter very distant from the minds of the Chinese people. von Falkenhausen spends a few hours in quiet consideration, but still accomplishes his job competently. For now, what concerns the Westerners is not what concerns China; she has her own matters to attend to.

I've done stuff like that before to learn, but I wouldn't do that in the course of a normal game. It would take the difficulty out of it, and that'd just make the game boring.

>>168864731
No, they don't, but I actually somewhat like that system in DH. It's to represent that they're getting more and more physically distant from the front, focusing more on strategy and less on tactics. They can command more people, certainly, but they must do it from a point of abstraction now, whereas before they were closer to the front lines and able to operate under their own authority much more rapidly and decisively.

Of course HoI3 resolves that by making the OOB an actual physical on-map system, where leaders in the chain are physically further away from the front, but that still has it's problems. Your best generals shouldn't be in your theater HQ, for example, because it doesn't really "do" that much for them to be.

Both systems have problems, but I think DH's came closer to representing the reality of things than HoI3's did, just because it feels like they were so interested in making the OOB a fully physical construct that they forgot to mechanically design it around how an armed force operates.

>>168865392
I haven't, but I've heard a friend who was really into HoI3 complain about it, and I watched a different friend play. IMO it doesn't look good at all, and it seems like they really went for abstraction and simplification of the mechanics. It's more like a blobbing simulator than a wargame based on what I saw of it. Although they did make some improvements to the factory system and the like, that doesn't trade well with the damage they did with nixing supply, changing naval transport, implementing the focus trees, etc.

Jiang is forced to swallow yet another bitter pill when he realizes that Long Yun's on-the-ground analysis of the situation was more accurate than his own. The forces of the 5th Jun were not only pushed out of Changshu after their disastrous assault, but indeed were pushed all the way out of Wuxi, their fall-back point, shortly after. Jiang realizes he has appointed a yes-man in the form of Xishan, and, with supreme reluctance, gives Yun operational--if not formal--control of the 5th Jun for the duration of several months; a tacit, if not total, admission of Jiang's failure.

Yun does not lord it over him, however, and instead merely sets to pushing the Japanese back. He splits his force to strike at Wuxi from both the north and west, and, seeing his plan, the Japanese marines beat a hasty retreat to Changshu, with the 5th Jun in rapid pursuit.

Meanwhile, after a series of battles lasting almost three weeks, the emergency divisions which were routed to the combat zone finally secure Hangzhou, and in so doing isolate the two portions of the IJA on the mainland. Although the IJA has unfortunately landed additional forces in Ningbo, they are happily only being supplied by that port, and Zhang Xueliang, commander of the 2nd Jun, anticipates supply difficulties for the Japanese.

The Japanese prove to be made of sterner stuff than was anticipated, and even with Long Yun's divided attack in the north, the Japanese marines manage to hold. It is in this situation of dire need that Lt. General Tonge Linge carries out a gambit, to strike at Shanghai from the rear. If he can reach it and capture it, the lack of supply will surely force the marines to retreat to a position where they can be surrounded and destroyed.

Due to continued force production and losses on the front, China's officers have gradually been spread more and more thinly over the front. Although the problem is as yet far from acute, the falling numbers do worry Jiang. Previously he had preferred to keep those literate Chinese in reserve to study and prepare new technologies for the army, but with their training largely having been under fire, new doctrines are rapidly being developed without intellectual support. Therefore, to stem the tide of loss (and perhaps put a uniform on some of those who would dare to criticize the valor of the men who fight, and yet fear to do so themselves), Jiang announces the reopening of several officer training schools in Nanjing and Beijing, with mandatory drafting for certain classes of citizens.

Although Tonge Linge's surprise strike on Shanghai failed, and indeed though he was even pushed back to Hangzhou, the attempt he made forced the Japanese division in Wuxi to retreat in order to intercept him. The 5th Jun, finally free from its pinning, managed to rush forward with all speed and recapture Changshu before the marines that had forced Linge to retreat could reposition. Shanghai was under threat once again.

With the aide of the emergency divisions in Hangzhou (augmented by another recently produced thanks to the continued attachment of artillery to the front-line divisions) pinning the marines in Suzhou, Long Yun and the 5th are finally able to recapture Shanghai, restoring the city to the Republic after exactly two months of enemy occupation. The people appear haggard, and many thousands are dead--a fact the enemy commander, one "Imamura," will pay for with blood--but they cheer when the forces of the Guomin Geming Jun march proudly back into their city.

Jiang flies into Shanghai the next day and personally presents Long Yun, in a ceremony before thousands of cheering Shanghai citizens, with the Order of National Glory--the highest award that the Republic of China can grant--and the Order of the Sacred Tripod, Sacred Grand Cordon for repelling the Japanese invasion of the heartland. Yun and Jiang embrace, and from that moment on the feud between the warlord and the Premier ends.

Meanwhile, in the south, the circumstances for General Nishio's forces have been much less pleasant than the fortunes of Imamura were (before he was encircled, of course). Forced to rely on the port of Ningbo alone for supplies over the course of weeks, and with many soldiers in need of resources, Nishio had to stave off mutiny, cannibalism, and desertion by the end. Yet, no matter how much he tried, he could not resist the crack 2nd Jun; his starving troops fold within just 4 days, leading to the recapture of Ningbo and the taking prisoner of almost 70,000 Japanese troops, by far the single greatest Japanese defeat in the war so far.

For their efforts, General Zhang Xueliang, commander of the 2nd Jun, also receives the Order of National Glory. The commander on the ground, General Wang Lingji, is awarded with the lesser honors of the Order of the Sacred Tripod, Red Grand Cordon, and Order of the Cloud and Banner, Special Cravat.

In the late evening of August 8th, it finally ends. Almost 25,000 elite Japanese marines surrender in Suzhou, among them their General, Imamura. Although he attempts to disguise himself as a colonel (no doubt in the hopes of being traded back to Japan in a prisoner transfer), men from Shanghai who had been forced to serve at his table personally identified him. After a brief period of being ran through the streets, the dog was taken to the top of his headquarters in the city, tied to a rope, and kicked off the roof unceremoniously. He died gasping for air, hanging above the cheering masses of people in the streets whom he had called vermin.

"I trust," Long Yun wrote to Jiang, "that our methods of dealing with violent beasts are acceptable to you, Premier."

They most assuredly were. The international community balked and condemned, but there were dead lying in the cemeteries of Shanghai from the gentle touch of the man now hanging above its streets, and no Chinese shed a tear.

Despite his success in the assault, Jiang must be pragmatic: the 5th Jun is a militia unit behaving as infantry. They are disorganized, slow, and less effective by far than the 2nd Jun's infantry were. Although Yun should be rewarded for his gallantry with a place at the front, for the time being it cannot be so. Thankfully Yun is understanding of being placed as a garrison force for Shanghai and Nanjing, so long as he is named acting governor of the city. Not all corruption is yet dead, it seems.

The 2nd Jun and the several emergency divisions which operated in the south have long since begun their move back to the north. Provided no more catastrophes come, the execution of Case Bai Qi is finally on the horizon.

Done for tonight, nailed almost 11 hours straight of content. Won't be able to do anywhere near that much tomorrow; I'll probably start late and try finishing around this same time. I don't know what Tuesday will look like but it should be more active..

If you want I can come with suggestions for you.

How much have you been playing in italy before? If you haven't then it's highly recommended. Forming Italy is extremely fun and it's a comfy region too.

If you've been playing eu4 a lot and already done italy then perhaps you can try to start as an american native and protect yourself toward europeans? Or perhaps you can play as Moldova and form Romania, have you done that?
>>

>>
>>168882354
Its better to play than vanilla, but the AI is fucking retarded, it is also stupidly buggy, half the time my auto saves refuse to save so I need to restart the game from the earliest not fucked save.
>>
>>168882572
A couple of thing i really do like about it are the limits to the number of alliances you can have and the way development work.
>>
>>168882441
How about playing as HRE-OPM? Have you done that a lot? If not then it can be fun and rewarding when you get big.

How about playing as France, have you done that? I figure that most people don't play as France because they are the big blue blob, what can possibly be the challenge in that? But France is actually not as easy as you'd might think. You never need to fear for your independence, but taking the surrounding lands aren't exactly a breeze. They have flavour too.

How about playing as Scotland, have you tried that? How about playing as Ireland, have you tried that?

How about playing in Asia, are you interested in that? (I usuall aren't)

How about playing as Mali? I've always wanted to try, but I always pick some kind of european nation instead.

Oh, and have you tried playing as Norway? Challenging start, really awarding when you get big and safe. They have more flavour now after Denmark patch. Nice colour on them too (for blobbing).

Well, if you are playing as papal states, the proper thing to do is to take jerusalem and have Livonian and Teutonic and the knights as marches. So it's not quite the same. Challenging I bet. I haven't tried it myself. (it's an achievement too if you like ironman)

>Haven't tried the Dutch yet.

In the year of 1945, after the amazingly successful term of a thin Industrialist majority with support on various issues from other factions, the time has come for a new session of the Indian National Congress.

This leadership election is also the first in the newly, nearly all reunited India. Our new regions have input too, and the first issue is taking the nightmarishly messy array of laws and law systems and making out of it, one. Which faction will emerge triumphant?

Brazil is fun because

1) You can make a south american empire
2) You can make an alternate history in which south americans aren't poor and uncultured monkeys
3) You can invade the USA by land

All unique experiences
>>
>>168899937
Is it so difficult? As far as I know that's the only way you'll see it. Maybe I'm wrong. I guess I never cared because I know pretty much all provinces and their locations (in europe at least)
>>
>>168900549
That in itself is not really my concern. I'm bothered that the state you select in that mapmode isn't highlighted, so you can quickly see which provinces compose it.
Still, thanks for the reply.

“Yeah, yeah." Austria muttered. "I should have expected this by now", he thought. Over the last two weeks, Bohemia had seemingly become quite obsessed with gorging on whatever country she could get her hands on. As she finished her meal and walked off, Austria noticed that all that land seemed to be having an effect on her borders. Formerly rail-skinny, as befitting a young nation, Bohemia's borders had grown in size recently. Though it was a small gain, with Austria estimating it to be about 12 provinces, her short, near-revealing tapestries clearly illustrated its effect— as she walked away from him, he noticed that her incredibly short flags now seemed to finally prove inadequate to fully cover her armies, as her swaying cavalry caused them to ride up the tiniest bit, displaying just a hint of her forces. Her border also seemed to display the smallest fraction of a duchy of her slightly swollen diameter.
