The reason Morde has to build essentially full damage is because unlike champs like Darius who gets passsive Armor Pen and his disgustingly strong passive or Illaoi with her W being %Health damage and her tentacles having stupid high base damages, Morde has pretty averages bases and scaling outside of his Q, which is by far one of the hardest abilities to land consistently on competent enemies.

If he stops building damage he's no longer a relevant damage threat, and a champion that literally does NOTHING but damage not doing damage is the definition of useless.

I've been saying for ages he needs some sort of %MR Shred in his kit and some passive that grants him additional damage so that he can actually be built tanky after 1-2 damage items and be a relevant frontline threat instead of the pussyfooting he tends to have to do in teamfights if he's not stupidly ahead

50 armor is very low. that's a lower level character with 0 armor items. you'd buy lethality against that.
