Finally got round to getting a copy of Splatoon now that the sequel's coming out this year. It's way more fun that I thought it was gonna be!

Any tips for a newcomer? Which weapon should I use? The roller seems good for turf control but I keep getting blasted by the opposing team.
Also is the campaign worth doing or is it just something to get you into the gameplay? And special rewards for doing it? And how long is it, roughly?

Just for the record, your level in this game is meaningless. Their weapons and abilities won't be better because they're level 50, all it means is they've played the game longer than you. I've played with/against some levels 50's who were absolutely shocking. When I bought the game last year, I lost about 20 matches before I finally matched with a team who carried my squib ass to my first victory. Don't be discouraged!

Inklings' wide beak is more like a scalpel, it effortlessly slices through everything, leaving a clean and easily treatable wound. Those shark teeth on octos? They rip, exposing huge surface area for infection to settle, requiring a ton of stitches to fix and, in case of them actually biting the arm off, ruling out reattachment.

It's a little strange at first, but since the jump button was changed to B, it's not much of a stretch for your fingers and you can quickly adjust.

The splattershot felt pretty much the same, aside from the special. The new specials are something I think people need to experience for themselves, as a lot of people are going to have mixed opinions on them.

Motion controls do feel different, they feel heavier in a way, as if the sensitivity was turned way down. Despite this, the joycon grip controller and pro controller are lighter, so you can over aim to first. I imagine with a bit of tweaking the settings and just general playing, you'd get used to it.

Honestly didn't notice it all that much in Splatoon. There's rumble, but feels just like any other game. The 1, 2 switch games I played didn't feature the rumble either so I can't say much for it.

The only stage we could play was the reef. I don't know if it's just that stage, but it felt awfully small when actually playing. As in it takes 0 effort to get to the other base. It's as if you took ancho-v games, flattened the majority of it out and took away the fans, and gave it some urchin underpass decor. And made it smaller.

Joycon grip is fine, although it's a very light controller (joycons are very light and then it's just hollow plastic) so it'll probably feel weird at first. If you have huge hands, your hands might cramp a bit playing it, but otherwise I'd say it's definitely doable.

Procon is a lot more comfortable and I'd definitely recommend it. I wasn't planning on getting one at first, but after playing with it, I prefer it.

I didn't get to mess with the roll much with the dualies since I only got to play one match with them. I played my best with them though, but I'd like to test them out more maybe during the testfire.

Holding charged shots is neat. But since I'm so used to peeking, I didn't do it all too much. Maybe got two kills while holding a charged shot. It depletes fairly quickly too, so I can see a lot of people still peeking shots in the first few months of the game until people get used to it.

Roller feels almost like an inkzooka while jump flicking. You definitely need to aim, but then again I'm terrible with rollers in general so...


Specials feel underpowered. I know a lot of people wanted specials to be nerfed, but I feel like they got carried away.

Stingray special feels like a pain in the ass to use. It's slow and needs setting up before popping it. Many others have said it's kinda like the killer wail, and it is, just tinier and moves. It's extremely easy to avoid one.

The missiles would be great if you could get two or three players at once in the same area, since it'd be 8 - 12 missiles. On their own, they're difficult to kill a player imo, and a lot of amateurs who had never picked up splatoon were playing. If that doesn't say anything, I don't know what will. They do double as a sort of pseudo echolocator though, although players aren't tagged after you fire the missiles. They're also not tagged for the rest of your team.

Splashdown is hands down my favourite special so far. It's simple, yet packs a punch. A great defensive ability (or offensive) that isn't a total invincibility.

Jetpack is okay. It's slow, has a lot of limitations, but does ohko if you hit them directly like a blaster. You're extremely vulnerable though. I shot a lot of them out of the sky.

Hopefully that is just a settings thing. The wii u controller was really first class with the triple sensor combination, but I wonder if the size of the controller helped too with being able to have sensors spread over the width.
