It's kinda odd to hear so badly from VI here, most people I've spoke with (outside of 4chan) said that VI expanded on everything V did well, but still had some issues and rolled back some qualities, like every Civ release (their words)

So it came as a surprise for it to not be seen as even having some sort of potential after some patching.
>>
>>168207306
Potential is a beautiful word, but as of right now they don't even have modding tools, the tech tree is wiped, the progression is generally fucked, the UI is terrible, the quotes are garbage, the AI is not even interested in winning so much as making you fucking miserable, and so on.
>>
>>168207446
>tech tree is wiped
>quotes are garbage
>AI is not even interested in winning so much as making you fucking miserable

Would you care to expand in these points? Especially the first and the last. Never heard of this.
>>
>>168207553
>Never heard of this
Dude, I never played Civ VI, but even I know about the AI settling near your borders and then getting pissy, and when you capture their towns, they're all empty.
>>
>>168207553
>tech tree is wiped
The tech tree progression is just fucked, you'll be researching the A-bomb in 1200, there's techs that are just dead ends (like ARCHERY), the civic tree is a neat idea but 90% of the civics are completely useless so you ignore them, you can research artillery before you research gunpowder iirc, etc.

>AI
The AI, first of all, is almost always at -10000 towards you for no apparent reason. They declare war on the slimmest of pretexts and seem to think that 1000 spearmen are a match for even a single gatling Corps.
They also do shit like settle cities in utterly shit locations right next to your borders, spam missionaries and apostles like nobody's business, and are just generally cunts.

I'm looking at the tech tree right now and Gunpowder is a prerequisite for Ballistics and Steel.
>>
>>168209141
There's some really fucked paths, when it came out everyone was talking about it
I forgot what the completely fucked combos actually were. What about the route to advanced artillery or whatever gives you riflemen / infantry? I remember clearly there was at least one gunpowder unit post-Niter that didn't need you to research gunpowder
Oh yeah speaking of that shit
>research iron working
>look for iron
>there's like three stacks on the entire map
>research coal mining
>there's maybe one deposit on your continent if any exist.
Also the navies are utterly useless which is why Harald-kun is trash, and the maps are too fucking small.
>>
Spiritualists should get a third AI personality that's halfway between Evangelising Zealots and Spiritual Seekers.

>>

>Gunpowder is a prerequisite for ... Steel.
Doesn't this seem kind of off to you
>>
>>168209238
Infantry from Replaceable Parts do not require Rifling, if that's what you mean.
>>
>>168209482
No there's one that doesn't require gunpowder unless they patched it out
It wasn't the only fucked up line either, I just haven't really played it for months so I don't remember it personally anymore.
>STILL no modding tools
Maybe if they released it we'd be able to fix their game for them, as it is I'm back to Civ IV
>>
>>168209585
Things that don't require Gunpowder:
Frigates
Ironclads
Biplanes
Submarines
AT Crew
Fighters
Rocketry
Satellites
Nuclear Submarines
>>
>>168209717
They must've patched it out then, there was a far more glaring one before.
what the fuck are all those things attacking with then, E&M railgun AT crews?
>>
>>168209717
Oh and speaking of units there's also the problem of two few units in general. The advancement feels kind of fucked and the old problem of "by the time I actually make two archers they're obselete".
>>

>I don't really see where the problem is.
The chinks were using blast furnaces by the Tang era. They didn't have gunpowder then.
>>
>>168209987
I didn't mean to imply it was a problem.

>>168210260
>>168210291
>>168210291
The implication is that we are talking about higher grade or more mass produced steel.
>>
>>168210260
>>168210291
No, I mean...
Why do you need gunpowder to make steel? Steel is iron+copper, right? You just need high temperature furnace, right?
>>
>>168210437
>higher grade
Damascus Steel was pretty goddamn high grade anon and Chinese steel wasn't in any way shit-tier either.
>>
>>168210482
Steel is carbonized iron so yes, you need a suitably high-temperature furnace and the ability to purify it and all that
It's not exactly simple but it's not related to gunpowder in any relevant way.
>>
>>168210484
Keep reading.
>>
>>168210437
Nigga what?
Damascus Steel based off of the production practices of Wootz steel was legendary even by today's standards, and people have been trying to replicate it ever since the technique was lost.

Toledo steel was also exceptional. If we're talking about Steel mass production then name the fucking thing something like "Modern Steel Manufacturing" Especially when "Steel" on its own was a medieval tech previously.
>>
>>168210514
Okay, I just said it wrong.
I meant to say I don't see any relation between these two. Ballistic clearly predates gunpowder, but I really don't see the relation between gunpowder and steel.
Maybe if you needed dynamite to mine, but...
>>
>>168210618
Right that's what I'm saying
Neither are related in a relevant manner. Ballistics KIND of makes sense because it suddenly became a lot more important due to the increased range and firing rates of field artillery, but steel...nah.

>>168210606
Yeah it's retarded but then again >Civ VI

>>168210553
>mass production
First off again >China, because China does everything big bigger biggest. Secondly "Steel" obviously refers to, you know, steel. Not the Bessemer Process or something.
>>
>>168210752
Well, ballistics was already relevant before.
Cough cough catapults trebuchet cough cough.
>>
>>168210606
>or

>mass
>produced
>>
>>168210752
>First off again >China, because China does everything big bigger biggest. Secondly "Steel" obviously refers to, you know, steel. Not the Bessemer Process or something.
You're being silly. Steel refers to anything related to steel. The tech tree doesn't mean humanity is supposed to first discover how to make the very first crude bit of steel in the late game.

I'm too tired to argue this right now.
>>
>>168210821
You could've just said onagers and ballistae, Romans literally had people whose sole job was to figure out where shots would land.

>>168210825
You know, for someone who tells a person to keep reading you seem to have a hard time doing so yourself.
Also, the logical "OR" function means that as long as any of the statements are true the entire statement checks out. A statement of [ ... higher grade or more mass produced steel] requires only that steel be higher grade, or mass produced, or both. You don't need both.
>>
>>168210825
>Maybe you should take your own advice and read more.
>>
>>168210895
>The tech tree doesn't mean humanity is supposed to first discover how to make the very first crude bit of steel in the late game.
Except as has been repeatedly pointed out, Wootz, Damascus, Toledo, and Chinese steel was of high quality and Damascus and Chinese steel was produced in massive quantities. In fact Wootz steel was too, to the point India had an entire export trade based on exporting quality Indian steel.
>>
>>168210921
Sorry, I still have the Age of Empires approach where ballistae and just oversized bows and onagres aren't for precision.

They've been doing a somewhat better job of introducing pre-FTL events. The other day, for example, I had a bunch of my observation post staff go rogue and try to bootstrap-uplift a society to keep them safe from my "imperialist influence." I had to actually raise send in a troop transport and land boots on the ground to arrest the staff and complete the event. Pretty cool. I also had an event where a rogue scientist from a completely unrelated event actually pretended to be a prophet and started gathering support to create a rival empire to get revenge on me. I was already in th midst of covertly infiltrating their society, though, and I finished that process before whatever the rogue scientist was doing could be completed. So I don't know how that ends. LASTLY, I had an event that I couldn't really interact with, but was still interesting. I had one of my covert agents in another society I was covertly infiltrating fall in love with a local, so he ran off with her and kept sabotaging the process, so it took way longer than usual.

SO, pre-FTL stuff isn't perfect, but the variety does exist. I'm hopeful that Paradox and modders can truly polish it into something great

BNW is better than 6 as of now but 6 is a LOT better than 5 when it first came out so it has the potential of surpassing BNW.

Why the Ethics in Stellaris are so terrible?
>Xenophile vs Xenophobe
How even licking a alien dick can be ethic? If so it could be Expansive vs Isolationist, which would make much more sense, Xenophile and Xenophobic could be a special zero cost Trait that could be added for flavor
>Pacifism vs Militaristic
This one is not terrible but it sound more like a Species trait that a ethic, especially that pacifist could be and should be well armed and skilled in combat, again its more for a Trait like Warlike or something, Ethics could be Hierarchy vs Egalitarian which actually fits theme as military is usually hierarchical
>Collectivist vs Individualism
Its actually fine but Individualism should be not against slavery, if so Collectivist should be one against one with alien slavery toleration instead(we are one, they are not) and Individualist should be OK with slavery so long he isn't one to be enslaved, but getting pissy when enslaved
>Spiritualist vs Materialism
This one is fine I guess.

Overall there could be more 0 cost traits that are reflection on some social/biological constructs or psychology. Aka Warlike or Predatory or Xenophobic etc, that affect specific questions.
So actually making
>Expansive Individualistic Hierarchy(aka Athenian Democracy) with slavery
or
>Isolationist Egalitarian Collective(aka Spartans) where aliens(helots) are enslaved but citizens are equal
Should be possible.
Please rate my rant.

At the moment, I wouldn't suggest either. If you can get civ V with all the DLC at a bargain price, than go for it, otherwise, just wait until civ VI comes down in price. At the moment, civ VI is about $60 just for the game with no expansions (guaranteed to come though) and civ V is basically the same price, if not more, with all the expansions that make it good. I was lucky enough to get civ V at a decent price, and the expansions later at a really good price during one of Steams weekend deals.

You could always 3.14rate it too.

This is their fuckiest set, which is why they're changing it somewhat, but individualism seems to be clearly about individual rights, which wouldn't generally sit well with slavery. You can practice slavery as an individualist empire if your species is decadent, though.

Yes it is.

Currently producing more military academies and research labs while conducting research in the economic sector. No idea if these are good ideas, but it is my first time playing this game and there is a lot of shit to do.

On the one hand I want to colonize Mars, on the other hand there doesn't seem to be a point to it as the resources there are probably kinda meh and not worth the cost and effort.

I think my next step will be to build harvesters and send them off to harvest shit from gas giants to stockpile fuel. Again, no idea if that is a good idea, but it sounded good to me.

2nd game of Civ 6 so far and I'm liking the Eureka system. It ties the game together and makes it more engaging. You have to be constantly thinking about achieving any one of nearly 10 events while moving your cultural and science research around such that you make full use of anticipated Eurekas.

>>
>>168246250
Just get on wiki and read the getting started guide.

Harvesting fuel from gas giants is for resupplying fleets far away from home and totally not efficient compared to mining/refining. You won't have to worry about fuel for a long time with just the starting stuff you get.

You should be building geo/grav survey ships and looking for planets with minerals.

its a shame in stellaris the galactic core is fully inaccessible
would make for a neat mid to even late game exploration region if say it required advanced technologies to even reach into it but with major rewards like harvesting O-class stars for massive energy output, gaining access to various new resources created in supernova cascades and perhaps even a galaxy wide struggle to be the empire/federation in control of the central singularity
>>
>>168248825

I'm also aware the game already lets you harvest dark matter from regular singularies, has various forms of FTL that would allow dipping into the event horizon and getting back out to be plausible and as of next xpac there's going to be various megastructures

and it would just be badass to have the entire galaxy go to war over who gets to control a supermassive black hole to the point if you control it to long the fallen empires start waking up and even the engame crisises try to reach it with a wide variety of horrifying effects if they do manage to reach it
>>
>>168249317
>has various forms of FTL that would allow dipping into the event horizon and getting back out to be plausible
Except that you have to be outside of any stellar object's gravity well to use FTL
>>

you can emergency FTL within a gravity well

its not safe sure but it would in theory be possible, given the tech levels available to engame stellaris to create a custom ship specifically designed to make a single jump to beyond the event horizon

What would Isolationism consist of mechanically that isn't already covered by Xenophobia? Pure "I just don't expand at all" doesn't really fit in the game, so it sounds like it would mostly refer to not being very open towards your neighbours.
>>
>>168255645
Megastructures should make it pretty viable to stay in your zone without expanding via conquest without any real expanding. You can already kind of do it by pushing your borders and terraforming fucking everything. Steal spess clay without wars.
>>
>>168256225

Yes, but it allows you to do it if you want. How are you going to play zero tolerance fanatic purifying crusaders if you don't have an ethic that reflects that? You can still play xenophobes in a non mass-murdering, isolationist version and it still fits with the theme. So I think renaming it into isolationism would be a net loss for the game, and I don't really see what the change would add in return.
