the tonfa questline is pretty long and requires doing a lot of very mixed objectives. the hardest part is chapter 7 where you're put up against something WAY out of your league for early g rank(we're talking him stepping on your toe oneshots you), and you have to kill it twice to boot.

the cats are bad just like mainline, but the AI partner (the one you can customize) is almost as good as a real player.
they'll get KO's if you give them an impact weapon, save you from snowman/paralysis, etc. it's amazing how much better they are than mainline partners.

the auto-fill AI hunters aren't as good for damage, but are still pretty smart.
depending on how much help you want, set the number from 2-4, lesser AI will fill in any empty slots.

you should take your partner at least, though.

if you're in the starter set and feeling like you're getting hit hard, you can make the gogomoa set and upgrade it a bit.

at HR5 (i think) you will be gifted a set along with some other things, talk to the purple lady at the town entrance to receive any gifted stuff you might have. it's one of the lower options on her menu.
the set is pretty good but it also looks pretty bad

one tip i'll give for the partner process is don't pick HH, they will play songs obsessively and end up corner-horning a lot. you can unlock more weapons for them later so your initial choice isn't final, though.

HH only has two attacks that send people flying, the superpound being the more common. This is executed with forward+x+a, or x+a after another x+a. Just make sure you don't do two consecutive x+as when people are close to you and that you also don't hold forward when pressing x+a in a combo and you'll be fine. The other is the backward encore, hold left while encoring for the shortest and least disruptive encore animation.

When you don't have a song to play, just alternate standing x and a if you're online, or x+a over and over if you're offline or safely able. But unless you have a horn with the melody extender song (which refreshes all active songs) and maestro you're not gonna have a whole lot of downtime probably.

As for not corner horning, it's pretty self explanatory. Attack the monster with your notes, encore on the monster or as close to it as you can safely be (or, if you want to be clever, on top of a pitfall so when it comes to you because playing a song increases your aggro drastically it falls in).

Which game? SnS is pretty good in 4U, and #10 out of 15 weapons but still very solid in Gen (Gen only has one bad weapon, 4U has like four or five), and also even more fun and versatile in Gen because of repeat offender, good arts and oils. In either game it shouldn't struggle with a rathian, but especially not in 4U.

You're mostly safe between her legs, though her charge can still get you; to be safe, when she turns, roll behind her, and if she does something other than charge do x+a to get back under her. Sometimes she doesn't telegraph it at all though because she's a cunt. Anyway, hit her legs enough and she'll trip.

Her head is INCREDIBLY weak and she has a little less than average health for a medium sized monster. Whenever it's safe to do so (especially when she trips) go for her head and just wail on it.

You can also detonate a flashbomb in front of her while she's in the air to make her smack down into the ground and stay there for a bit, stagger her wings while she's in the air for the same effect if you can find a way to do so, mount her or paralyze her, all of these leave the head wide open. And when she uses her fire you can sometimes safely attack the head, but be wary has the fire hitbox is a bit weird and can hit you from behind her head if you're actually touching her neck.

You probably don't want to use the first two much online though (TA only reflects solo play), DB and bow are excellent both online and solo. HBG is more effective online than solo, same goes for LBG though. The bottom weapon is HH, which is one of the best online weapons but the worst solo one, followed by GL (trash everywhere), prowler (better online) and hammer (which kind of got left behind the other weapons, with no good new shit from styles, no mv buffs, no significant moveset changes and fairly shitty HAs; Still, it's another that's better online).

So best weapon overall is probably DB, and worst overall is GL.
