I am doing this as the layout for the mess hall, however I just realized I have tiny fridges (1x1, 1x2) from some mod, would it be a good idea to put the fridges right inside this room so people can take meals from them directly? Kitchen will be north, and the actual big fridge attached to it somewhere up there too. So maybe I should try to make room for little fridges with meals too?

Are you playing HCSK? Getting to the high tech tier is a massive undertaking, but possible.
You don't actually need nano metallurgy, you need the metals in thermodynamics which you can research with the initial research table. You can smelt them in the arc furnace and then make advanced mechanisms.

One problem is that the rare ore mine is actually locked behind the high tech bench, and you need Nickel for all of the alloys that can make adv mechanisms. So either pray that you have Nickel somewhere on your map (use the mineral radar to look inside hills), or you'll have to travel or trade for it.

I always preferred assault rifles, but if I get a decent charge-rifle off a dead raider, I'm not going to go out of my way to replace it.

It's nice keeping a few good sniper rifles lying around on an equipment rack for if a raid comes with a doomsday launcher or something, but usually I just prefer multiple assault rifles. More bullets flying means more chance for hits. Even if they don't kill them, a shot to the arm or similar is going to impair their ability to shoot back severely.

Kill-box removes a lot of the fun, but it's definitely effective.

said, build firebreaks but don't go crazy sending people into burning buildings to try and fight fires, it's likely to get them killed. Worst case you lose most of your base and have to rebuild, but you can do so if you can save enough food to keep people alive.

I played DF from 2010, played vanilla and lately masterwork. I ended up switching to Rimworld and I like it more now. The only downside is lack of Z levels, it's flat like old DF.
Combat more than makes up for it. You can actually control your units and utilize tactics (there is the concept of cover, plenty of weapon types, explosives and so on).

Crafting and production used to be fairly bare bones, but recently it got fleshed out and it stands up to DF in my opinion. And if you want more, there are lots of mods you can install, it probably has a more colorful modding community than DF. If you liked Masterwork's everything and the kitchen sink approach there's Hardcore SK which adds a ton of autism and a tech tree that can literally take a week in real life to complete and build everything. Of course there are hundreds of more lightweight mods that you can install one by one if you want to stay closer to the vanilla experience.

Fair enough. You can also find small specialized mods you like and add them individually if you prefer a less bloated experience. Modding here is more like Elder Scrolls/Fallout modding where you add 50 smaller mods than DF modding where usually just use a single big one.

Sex-crazed breakdowns is a good idea, but only with prisoners as the victims. The problem with letting colonists rape each other is that then you need to program in all kinds of fallout from the rape, like for example bystanders trying to stop it, and that gets complicated quickly.

Also yeah I'd like to add S&M gear at some point, such as an armbinder that reduces manip to 0%, or a gag that prevents talking, or a chastity belt that prevents sex.

If no animals on map, another creative method would be to build a single wall tile, roof over around it a bit (make sure roof isn't connected to any walls nearby), then destroy wall with the pawn you don't want around anymore. Roof collapses, pawn takes damage.

It's like a powerline that's connected when on, and not connected when off. By the way, seeing how fast it is to build a powerline segment, a switch is a waste of component. Just remove the line segment when you want to disconnect something past that, or build a single unconnected powerline near the actual appliances/turrets. Use the reconnect to turn them on/off at will, no need to have a pawn go "flick" anything.

Tried with 4 of them and literally nothing, then I switched them to heat the ROOM they're in, and cut off the pipe and put an intake on it so it takes the air from the heated room, and that works just fine.

It's explained on the mod page. The network needs airflow. One smart outlet puts out 4 units of air, one intake provides 16. So for every 4 outputs you need 1 intake. It's not that complicated. If the network is hot but the room isn't you need more outputs/inputs, if the network is cold you need more industrial heaters.

Alright, I downloaded Prepare Carefully and it turns out it's not that mysterious. is_nympho accesses the pawn's StoryTracker to check for the trait and that was crashing because PC creates pawns without an attached StoryTracker. The method I'm currently using to inject the changes into existing saves won't work because it checks for the existence of a MapComponent to know that it needs to perform the injection. Only if the component doesn't exist then the injection fires, and it will already exist if the player loads a save that was created with the mod active. Most are high damage low hp. Big herbivores (muffs) are low damage mid hp, but they take all the ranged hits aimed at them.

Mostly the star vampires since they're sanic fast and invisible until they're like three tiles away. They also hit like a scyther.
Everything else usually doesn't show up until you can deal with them.
Exception being maybe young ones on maps without game if you're short on weapons, but since they behave like hungry predators you can just wall yourself/them off and ignore them.
Also it's modular. Monster pack is separated from the rest.

Not sure what unharmed means. May be just no unpatched damage, may possibly allow harvesting lung+kidney and still count as unharmed.

I have a mod that adds nerve staples. They instantly recruit a prisoner and let them do any work but they lose all passions, 25% of every skill, and are vulnerable to dementia-style bouts of confusion. The staples themselves are also rare and have to be researched, but the mod also lets you manufacture joywires and painstoppers.

I used a nerve stapled prisoner as a soldier, cleaner and hauler because she only retained her shooting skill when I stapled her. Figured it was a just punishment for her killing my previous top soldier in the raid I captured her from.

Happened to me in my last run. Malaria infected 3/5 of my colonists 10 or so days into the run. The 31 year old survived, the 51 and 59 year old didn't have a hope, keeled over. Conventional Medicine from the standard 3 man start was used, but nobody had high medicine.

Disease after and before 50 are two very different things in this game.

Unless it just takes forever to go away, I'm pretty sure it's just not disappearing. I had a second person get warts when the original person was at 99% immunity. That second person has now gotten all the way to 100% immunity, and then went from major warts down to minor, but the original person is still sitting at minor.

And you can't tend to them once their immunity hits 100% even though it says "Needs tending now".

I used them a fair bit in the early-mid game of my last base. I think I had 4 or 5 up by the time I swapped over to renewable. I was in a boreal forest so wood wasn't hard to come by.

They're solid. Meant I never had issues with eclipses, etc. I also kept them around, so if I was ever using too much energy or my batteries were going to run out, I could just go flick the switch, and there would be no more issue.

Dunno if I'd keep them around forever (in terms of actively using them), but they're a nice contingency. If they made it so you could fuel them with chemfuel (I'm sure there'd be a mod for this), I could see them keeping a good place in the late-game too, when you get all that deep-drilling tech. By that point, the land is usually pretty barren of trees.

You control 1-20ish (hard maximum, realistically) pawns that do their own thing, using them to work, build, and fight just like in DF. A main difference between the two is that you can take direct control of your pawns and force them to do any single job you want as long as they're not on fire or dying.

It'll slow to a crawl if you have like 30 pawns, but the game is generally about fewer, more efficient and effective agents rather than 100+. Enemies don't really affect my FPS too much, but your mileage may vary.

No, but you can launch caravans and death squads from your base and roam the world while simultaneously still taking care of your base. Or have multiple bases if you hate your FPS. Even DF doesn't have that!

Oh, also, agents can outright refuse to do a lot of different jobs, and they can REALLY like doing certain jobs. It generally makes it so that you want to only assign your pawns jobs they have a passion for. Even a low skill worker can be insanely valuable if he shows up with a Burning Passion for crafting or growing, because the skill builds so quickly. There isn't really FPS death, but time acceleration can become choppy once you get ~15 units. Normal speed is fine, but 2x or 3x speed can get laggy later.
(you micromanage units a lot more in this game, and 15 people is a fairly large population here).

On my machine DF goes down to sub-10 fps, but Rimworld is playable in a game that I started about a week ago.

No adventure mode here, the developer focuses on fortress building fully. I'm a bit partial because in my opinion adv mode is by far the biggest problem with DF, it takes years until fortress mode improvements happen.

You can steal shit and murder entire settlements with your death squads, but yes, in general if you reach the point where you have everything you need, you'll run out of things to do just like in DF. It depends on where you start, you craft your own difficulty depending on where you start. Unlike in DF, you can't just dig down into soil and grow shit in any biome.

And again, there are difficulty settings. You will likely get wrecked on the hardest one.

Vanilla Rimworld has about as much content as vanilla DF, maybe a bit more.

It has a very good modding community, and mods usually play nicely with each other (there are exceptions), you can install a lot of small mods (20-30+) and customize your experience.
There is also an autistic everything and the kitchen sink mod called Hardcore SK which is the equivalent of Masterwork DF. It can easily take a week of real life time to research and build everything there.

But vanilla Rimworld has a lot of content too. You can take prisoners and try to convert them to your faction, sell them to slavers or harvest their organs. You can turn your people into cyborgs, replacing their limbs and organs with superior bionic parts. There is farming, weapon and armor crafting, tailoring and so on, pretty much everything that DF has.

I switched from long years of DF and didn't look back, especially after I got into modding.

Buy all of the components. Start near an outlander town and trade with them.
Starting in a flat map makes for easy base building, but you have to spread out defenses all around if you don't put up a killbox.
On the other hand, building inside a mountain makes raids trivial. You need to mine it out, though. Also insects, no spoilers but do think twice before doing it.
On that topic, roofs collapse if they're too far away from a wall. Take a guess at what happens if you mine out a mountain without leaving support columns.
All in all, most things are explained in the tutorial and with the helper.

I did the lone explorer start in Boreal and gathered like 1000 berries for the winter. I thought it was overkill but then a flash storm hit and burned half the map down so I couldn't get anymore. After the flash storm alphabeavers showed up like 3 times and raped the remainder of the forest so the map is barren and looks shit. Also there was toxic fallout so now the map is covered in animal skeletons.

It never gets to full suffering level because you've got pretty good wood supplies and animals, but you've still got to deal with ~1 real consistent growing season, and constant cold.

At first, it's pretty easy with all the berries lying around, but after while, flash-storms will cull the entire map down. Once that's happened, it doesn't regrow due to the cold.

while the latter is partially true, what it fails to understand is that you DO control your units. You set up your squads and move them as a single coherent unit, a system that can be expanded to only move single dwarves much like you can in Rimworld. You can still engage in tactics that aren't total bullshit like setting up marksdwarves at the end of a 1x50 tile corridor. For example, build an archery tower and move your dwarves there, or use a line of fortifications to protect marksdwarves and have squads of melee dwarves protect the sides etc

Let's NOT pretend like the combat in Rimworld is any more complex or engaging than DF, it's really roughly the same except there's more micromanagement. The tactics are just more oriented towards squads and a larger scale, which is really true of pretty much everything when it comes to DF vs Rimworld

And then you have 9 dwarves of the squad chasing one guy, and the remaining 1 dwarf rushes 2 groups of 20 enemies and dies. And there's NOTHING YOU CAN DO because Toady thinks it's so rewarding to remove all control from the player once combat starts.
Oh wait, you can turn him into civilian, then there is a slight chance that he will randomly run to a useful direction.

Meanwhile in Rimworld you have cover to think about, you can flank the enemy, you can retreat, regroup, lure the enemy into your defenses, you can outrange and kite. You can pull back a wounded unit and have another haul him to safety to save him. You have artillery that can actually be bloody aimed instead of fixed to NSEW directions only like in DF (okay, dfhack gives proper controls at least). You can use a guy with melee weapons and shield to draw the enemy fire while the unshielded people are safe.

All of this is impossible in DF.

I used to be a DFriend but over the years I grew bitter and frustrated with fucking Toady as he kept adding world and adv mode content and kept completely shitting on fortress mode for the entire last 5 years, while we still can't at least tell a fucking dwarf to retreat or hold position. with an ambitious plan to reclaim the western waters into life giving soil, we build several sacrificial turrets to protect our moisture pumps
