Let's take a moment to really take in the deep lore and understanding in the Aksis encounter.

The entire room is in the shape of the Destiny symbol (Tricorn). The back, left and right areas make up the "Y" and Aksis' platform is the "0"

If you look at the environment of the area, you can see Fallen technology on the left and Warmind (Human) tech on the right. Aksis being in the middle symbolizes that he is the centerpiece or culmination of Fallen and Human technology being used together.

When you start the Phase 2 fight, Aksis and the structure holding him extends outward from a hole. This is similar to the Archon you fight after being raised by your Ghost, and it's similar to the Archon Rising you can find in the vanilla Cosmodrome when you choose a VIP Patrol mission; both Fallen bosses climb out of a hole in the wall.

If you spell Aksis backwards, you get Siska, which sounds awfully similar to Shiska, one of the first Bungie.net moderators.

Another direct quote from Marathon comes from Rasputin's grimoire cards. "It's just like my cousin said," is said by Durandal when mentioning his past as a door-opening AI.

So, just got the game and advanced to level 40, what are some of the things I can do to obtain unique equipment and what sort of quest chain should I find/follow

Jut do strikes, best way to level up your light level. if you have strange coins go to Xur on fridays and saturdays and either buy exotic equipment from him or buy strange coins which can make exotic engrams drop from bosses. As for quests do all of the Rise of Iron quests and try do so as many of The Taken King quests. Loot from the taken king quests will be lower in light level but you can infuse them to a higher light plus they give out a lot of legendary marks. Make sure you do the taken king quest that unlocks your third subclass too

If you have finished the Rise of Iron and Taken King quests, they will give you special pieces of Exotic gear or quests leading to them, speak to Lord Shaxx and Eris Morn after doing Regicide in Taken King to start a quest for a sword that can evolve into one of three Exotic versions. Rise of Iron completed gives you an Exotic sword called Young Wolf's Howl. You can do raids, cout of oryx/prison of elders/archons forge and pvp to get better weapons along with buying weapons from vendors for better rolls and even buying exotics from Xur who comes every Friday-Saturday, do your Rise of Iron book for exclusive gear and cosmetics.
