It is mentioned in the opening that the Pilgrims of Londor are traveling north specifically to Lothric, where all of the lands of the Lords converge because of the legend of the Ash that will arise when the Lords abandon their thrones. Lothric knows all about the legend. So Londor is implied to be south of Lothric, exists on the same plane, which would also mean it's not at the Dreg Heap. It's clear their purpose there is simply to die, which will cause them to turn either into Pilgrim Butterflies, or into Angels. Why would Londor send Pilgrim Butterflies and Angels to Londor? Why do the Pilgrims seek to help the Ashen One, only for their transformed state to want to kill the Ashen One? What the hell do the Butterflies and Angels even DO?

At 45/45 (the actual softcap for IS) it gets 50 more damage on dark spells than a Court Sorcerer Staff with 60int. And that's without considering that dark spells are inherently weaker than anything else sorcery gets. There is no dark equivalent of Crystal Soul Spear. GDS is a GSA, but sorcery has GHSA too.

Dark needs a buff because normal sorcery and miracles are strictly better than the dark ones, and pyromancy uses the same stat spread and just outright obviates it.

As long as dark is stuck juggling casting tools they'll never be good.
>>
>>167886396
That statement is based on the assumption that a dark caster necessarily needs to cast from more than one school.

If a dark sorcerer uses Great Deep Soul, Dark Edge, Affinity, and that new spell in the webm, that's four different spells with different uses. That'd be four slots (or five if GSD uses two slots) devoted to dark sorceries. There isn't room for another catalyst in that spell list, nor is there need for one.

Dark Edge would be too much with hyperarmor. It has almost three times the range of Black Flame and can be free aimed during its casting animation. It's perfect as is.

GDS doesn't need to be faster, it's already the second top spam spell in the game after BS. Some pure Int builds even use it to pressure people and force rolls. It needs a buff even less than Dark Edge does.

Affinity is the one with all the problems, and causing all the problems. It's supposed to be dark's pressure and setup spell, but the homing is utter shite to the point that people can walk around it. Lacking a good setup/pressure spell, dark can't do anything else with the two other decent spells it does have. Affinity needs homing on par with Black Serpent, or at least as good as it was in DaS1/2. The slow flight speed is fine, and combined with homing would make it even more effective.

The new spell looks like it's supposed to be Soul Spear, which would at least patch up dark's biggest problem: their lack of nukes. If the spell is just dark Soul Spear, that plus an Affinity homing buff is literally all they need.

Honestly though, the dark miracles are way worse and need more than just a buff. Dead Again is literally unusable, despite clearly being meant to fill the same role as Affinity.

Don't give dark edge HA, that's silly. No sorcery should have HA, period. Especially not when the only gimmick miracles have is poisecasting. Innate poisecasting for free on a sorcery would be a slap in the face.

Here are the changes Dark needs:

Dark Blade - properly scale with both int and faith

Deep Soul/Great Deep Soul - Greatly improve tracking, especially in close range.

Affinity - increase damage and projectile lifetime

Dark Edge - increase damage

Gnaw/Dorhys' Gnawing - boost casting speed and add real tracking

Dead Again - allow invaders to use it on corpses without requiring a seed

And I'm leaving Lifehunt Scythe for last because it needs literally fucking everything: More damage, more reach, more cast speed, more lifesteal, less recovery, less FP cost, etc.
If you notice, there's a recurring theme among dark spells in-concept that doesn't quite pan out in reality. Most dark spells have long casting times and claim to have some degree of aggressive tracking (or other gimmick to make them difficult to avoid) on top of being powerful. This gives them a sort of on-paper identity as the ranged danger that's a big threat as long as they can get their spells off, but vulnerable under pressure where they don't have enough breathing room. In reality, Gnaw and Dorhys' Gnawing have NO tracking when cast by a player, not even a little. They're straight-line spells that miss against a slowly strafing enemy and thus useless against anything other than cheesing large, slow and bleed-vulnerable bosses like Dancer. Deep Soul and GDS describe their tracking as being a defining feature of their spell tree, but they use the exact same tracking behaviour as soul arrows. In fact, they cost about the same stamina and FP as soul arrows and have the same casting animation. Their only real difference is that the projectile moves slower initially (and builds up speed over distance) and deals dark damage. That "seeking" property of their identity is missing.

>Deep Soul/Great Deep Soul - Greatly improve tracking, especially in close range
It doesn't need to be a better affinity, that's what affinity is for. It's a spam spell that also forces a roll.

>Affinity - increase damage and projectile lifetime
Projectile lifetime doesn't matter if its homing is so bad people don't even need to dodge. It needs a homing buff more than anything else.

>Gnaw/Dorhys' Gnawing - boost casting speed and add real tracking
For a spell that can be poisecast and racks up 210 bleed per hit, it really doesn't need a casting speed increase. It could use a slower flight speed and better homing, though. Side note, they aren't straight line spells and do have minor homing on par with soul arrows, they just fly so fast you hardly notice it.

Everything else is about right, though.

I have more money than time. I buy a game, play if for a bit to make sure it works, then add it to the backlog.

I am also not an achievement whore, so I don't really care about getting them unless there are tangible benefits, like a theme or avatar tied to them.

That's also why I only have a few DaS1 trophies. I got 100% in the 360 then just focused on recreating my PvP character on the PS3 version. I beat the game once on PS3 so I could get two copies each of black flame and great combustion.

>It's a spam spell that also forces a roll.
If anybody ever unironically rolls through a shot of deep soul, they're a living joke.
You can WALK around it. The tracking is so weak that you can consistently dodge it while approaching the caster without rolling and without slowing your approach. Casting it puts you at a frame disadvantage, even at a distance. Your target will just sprint slightly to the side for a fraction of a second to walk around it and continue their B-line to you.

Deep soul is one of the worst pvp spells available because of this. It forces no reaction from your target and doesn't generate any threat unless they just don't know any better.

You're right that Affinity needs better homing, but one of its issues in 3 is that it expires so quickly that you can just roll through it like a slow soulmass and never worry about a second pass because it dies off right away. The long projectile lifetime (long enough that it could make a second or third pass if you rolled through it) was one of its most threatening features in both 1 and 2. That was the thing that made it difficult to consistently avoid, and being difficult to avoid is the entire point of a slow homing spell with a long setup time.

And the cast time of Gnaw is fucking long. It takes as long to cast as lightning stake, which is unforgivable for a linear ranged nuke that does middling damage. If there was ANY synergy between bleed and dark, it might not be so bad, but there's practically none, which means the bleed effect of Gnaw only factors against the aforementioned slow boss targets. The poisecasting is irrelevant since it suffers the same issue as most other poisecast spells, namely that the windup is so long someone can attack into your startup and still have time to dodge the spell.

once you figure out what's probably happening, it's actually crazy climactic.

The Pilgrims are traveling to Lothric as part of a religious tenet of the sable church, which was founded by followers of kaathe. The religion dictates that Lothric is the only place where the undead can truly die, and followers of the church are enticed to go on a pilgrimage to Lothric, to finally die and enter into the afterlife. Once their pilgrimage ends, they "die", and await the end of the world, where the angels come to usher them into death and ascend them into the afterlife.

It's the final plan Kaathe devised before his death, a duality of Gwyn's dark soul destroying lie of the chosen undead. Kaathe is using a religion to shepherd undead to a singular location, where they finally "die", and with the help of the angelic beings, "ascend" into the next life. The angels defend the pilgrims as their essence is split; as their consciousness ascends into the "Afterlife" as a butterfly, their souls (their humanity) are finally disjointed from them and can descend into the deep, to rejoin with the collective soul.

The pilgrims, and the deep, are kaathe rebuilding the dark soul.

So, it's more like Londor is deploying living superweapons around.

I have a feeling that Dark Souls didn't originally start out as a "spiritual successor" to Demon's Souls.

The Crystal Lizards originally looked like updated versions of the ones from DeS, and Young Witch Beatrice uses a wand, which were used in DeS, and aren't in DaS at all.

they're pilgrim BUTTERFLIES

the pilgrims are cocoons, and in the DLC they are hatching.

the angels, whether they are a projection of the pilgrims or a being sent by whatever the fuck is in the deep, is protecting them while they are vulnurable.

the DLC is probably going to end on a note we absolutely do not expect, like a trip directly into an underground lake comprised entire of "the deep" as the dark soul slowly reforms and congeals.

we're applying the skills used for every single piece of accepted lore in these games.

difference is that I've read a lot of books and taken university level writing classes, and I can kinda see where the FROM team are going with this, even if my ability to explain it might not be fully clear.

kaathe, through the sable church of londor, is shepherding undead to the location of the ringed city, to harvest their humanity and finally reunite the dark soul. This reunited dark soul is what sulyvahn and aldritch called the deep.

If I'm already using witch's+swamp, which addition should give more pyro damage in pvp: scholar and priestess, or fire clutch and rosp? Does your absorption with clutch + rosp come out positive in pvp, or do the numbers get funked up?

For reference, it seems like going from 20/20 to 25/25 gives around 13% more mag adj, from 25/25 to 30/30 gives 10% more, and from 30/30 to 35/35 gives 9% more. If the effects of the fire clutch ring really are halved in pvp (which would mean fire clutch adds only 7.5%), and you don't get a significant net-gain on physical absorption with rosp, can you safely say that they aren't worth the slots? Not to say +5 rings are either, just that they're less-bad for comparison's sake. Obviously in PvE clutch and RoSP are good though

You realize that Fromsoft are intentionally making them similar because they love the designs they've created since King's Field and Shadow Tower?

Partially it's also asset and animation usage. You can see old DaS1 animations in Bloodborne and Bloodborne assets and animations then put back into DS3.

And them creating a new setting despite making sequels suggests that Dark Souls was planned to play out like it did.

Well, actually, From indeed wanted to make a DeS 2 and have it be a multiplatform title but Sony owned the I.P and they made DaS.

There's a problem with this idea: Nowhere is it said that Londor has anywhere near enough a share of the world's population to recreate the Dark Souls.
If nothing else, Carim, Vinheim and Catarina still exist, and most certainly have meaningful human populations as well, and all those humans still have their own shards of the Dark Soul. It's not like the entire world population is converging in Lothric, or at least the game never gives off that impression.

I always thought humans/giants turn into arch trees after they hollow the fuck out, save for a select few who join the Dragon covenant and turn into Archdragons instead.

Would complete the cycle nicely. Age of Fire -> Age of Dark -> Age of Everlasting Dragons.

Like, in this sense, the games themselves are always set in the Age of Dark. People always look forward to it but the irony is that once the fire completely fades, it just leaves a grey land behind.

So lemme get this straight
Lothric is a kingdom where the royal family's bloodline is divine and traces back to the Great Lord of Sunlight and Cinder, first among all Gods.
Where their Scholars are a school founded by Aldia, a man who tamed drakes, created dragons, genocided giants, peered into the essence of the soul, transcended life and death, and pioneered sorceries which surpass seath's crystals.

Their knights are sunbros who worship the God of War, Cooperation, Sunlight and Dragons and are blessed by his favour with tamed Wyverns

And who's borders are guarded by a roving nomadic legion of Artorias fanboys who channel his sword skills by drinking the blood of wolves.

But anon, pilgrim butterflies don't have flesh. They're wood and fire, except when they aren't on fire. And you're only assuming the pilgrims are cocoons, the description on the cleric's set calls them seedbeds of darkness. So, they'd be more like plants than cocoons.

You really shouldn't be acting like a condescending ass about it, though. You don't understand any better than anyone else. For instance, the angels literally die when the pilgrim tree is killed. They don't just run off, they scream and die just like all the other times they die, except without coming back. Also, they constantly respawn when killed without touching the tree, even though they visibly die every time. They aren't a separate creature, they're projections of the pilgrim tree. Considering we haven't seen any angels around with the butterflies, it's probably safe to say the angel trees and butterflies are separate creatures.

Aldia probably got Oceiros into the whole furry biz with his artificial dragons (like the wyverns outside of Lothric castle who have Pus of Man growing out of them, which can only affect humans) and got really upset when his employer kept pestering him to make a real life fursuit when he should have been ruling the kingdom instead. He helps him anyway since that's what he's getting paid for, which makes the Queen pack her shit and leave in disgust and once he sees what Oceiros has become, he realizes he just fucked everything up again because now Prince Lothric has nobody to watch over him and train him to go on a magical crown seeking journey to become a TRUE MONARCH (tm). So there's nothing he can do anymore and leaves.

TLDR: blame furries

Originally hunters of dragons, later tamed them. Not stated to worship them, but considering the kingdom produced and issued rings for knights looking to become dragons it's probably not that far fetched. Also helps that the Firstborn (sunbro covenant god) was in with the dragons.

That's because everything is heavily implied to be from the original Archtrees. The Splitleaf greatsword specifically goes out of the way to mention that it has veins going through it like a leaf. >>
>>167893708
The "Wyverns" are just ascended humans, man.
It's obvious that there was some coordinated experiment going on to turn humans into dragons, as evidenced by the fact that dozens of them are locked up in the Irithyll Dungeon and Oceiros himself being all dragon-loopy.

Plus you get the Dragon Head Stone, an artifact that humans use to transform themselves into dragonoids, by literally cutting it out of a Wyvern's head.

Wyverns are just humans that successfully took on a dragon-like shape. They just aren't true dragons, so despite their size and power, are still as vulnerable to abyss corruption (Pus of Man) as anyone else. That's also why killing the Pus kills them.

It's yet more proof that the Lothric Knights have the support of NK (who they worship), since Wyverns hang around Archdragon Peak, a place where dragon-worshipping humans seek to transform into dragons. The Sneks are the failures; the Wyverns are the successes. Both are still human deep down inside.

Aldia was never linked to Crystal Magic, that was all Seath. The fact that Seath's archives existed right there next to Anor Londo is reason enough to explain the existence of both crystal magic and the king turning into a crystal dragon.

The rumor that Soul Stream was mistranslated and originally referred to Aldia is itself based on a bad translation of the original text. A capital S scholar doesn't necessarily imply Aldia, and the profile depicted on the Scholar's Ring looks nothing at all like him anyways.

Okay, so making into a text post:

Pilgrims are sent out from Londor with Atonement, sent to Lothric from the south (opening scene) where they are told they will finally die permanently. Londor is a place where many unsavory characters live (Dead Again). Their deaths are in fact facilitated by Atonement and their exile is less than kind. Upon dying, their Human Dregs break away from the body, sinking to the lowest depths imaginable (as how they lived their lives as deplorable people figuratively and literally) where they form the bedrock, or foundation, of this world (Great Deep Soul). Once at the bottom they become one with the liquid-like Deep, a once peaceful and sacred place (Deep Protection). However, the sinful nature of those releasing Dregs en masse in such a concentrated area have thrown the Deep underneath Lothric into turmoil. Knowing the nature of the Dregs, the bridge to Lothric was destroyed in an attempt to keep the Pilgrims away (in-game they are separated at the bridge), preventing an "Abyss" from forming undernear the kingdom.

Angels are known herbingers of the Deep, either being summoned or created by the same Pilgrims. It is possible that the Pilgrims release Pilgrim Butterflies, while their remains are able to sustain Angels (as killing their remains destroys as corresponding Angel). It may even be possible that before the Pilgrim Butterflies are released they release projections of Angels that are able to communicate and move freely before releasing the Pilgrim Butterflies, as the Angels existed in the past, while the Pilgrim Butterflies are a more recent event.

We know their names and descriptions, and the description of the spell hints that it might be the giant humanity ghost cast by the murkmen. It looks big and strong, but we don't know how strong because the player's HUD was turned off. At the worst, it's probably a dark GHSA.

We don't know for sure if the staff is better than Izalith Staff. Considering it's DLC it'll need something to distinguish itself in some way, shape, or form, so at the very least it'd be the parting flame to the IS's normal pyro flame.

Hopefully there's more, like a dark miracle nuke to go with this sorcery one.

Also as you know the Dark pages were added to the Deep Divine Braille Tome. Now we know that the wet nurse of the Prince, Emma, was a Londor agent, and likely was the one who slipped those in. >>167896105
it could also be that the Abyss infections that the Pilgrims suffer from is the specific cause of the corruption of the Deep -- that's why they got booted from Londor to start with, so that they wouldn't transform into monsters in the middle of the Sable Church and start shitting Abyss everywhere.

After all, the Deep has been coalescing since the first human died. Since the dawn of the Age of Fire, the Dark Soul has been quietly re-coalescing in the depths of wherever the fuck, and occasionally Abyss-infected humanity makes its' way down there too and fucks everything up.

Also, it seems that people have learned how to dig holes and reach it from the surface: see the huge pool of Deep outside the CotD. It also seems possible to channel your humanity to cast Deep sorceries even while still alive, because after all, until your humanity runs wild it's just a little nugget of Deep that's been cut off from the rest, and isn't quite as deliciously stagnant yet.

An actual cairan boss battle would be like the shaded woods of DS2, except each backstab gave you toxic.

The reason Ciaran is so easy is because she's and assassin who has no intention of hurting you until you force it on her. I kinda wish they did the whole "if you don't give her the soul, she invades your game at various points when most inconvenient" thing that DS2 did, but obviously their priorities with DS1 were on the artorias boss battle.

Apparently not? If Gwyn knew Humanity for what it truly was, he might've freaked out a long time ago. To the best of his knowledge, he was ruling an age of light and the neighboring kingdom was full of cute little mini people who could cast light. Then a snake comes along and everything goes to hell, so you call up another snake and try to figure out how to change it back and tell your lastborn son to shepherd the little people so they stay calm and don't go apeshit like that again.

I'm not sure if it'd really conflict, to be honest. Gwyn's light is actually lightning, which is supposed to represent the rays of the sun. Angel light is just straight up pure light with rainbow effects around the edges, and is kind of harsh at that. Golden sorceries don't look like the same kind of light, but golden sorceries have properties often associated with the dark and abyss (time fuckery and space warping being chief among them).

I could just be overthinking this, though.

Well yeah more accurate would be Light Souls and Dark Souls (humanity) the point is we know that light and dark and humanity and the descendants of the other lord souls have mingled and interbred and the two substances can be contained in different amounts within the same being, so the whole "humans inventing light magic it must be the good aspect of humanity" is ignoring that it probably has nothing to do with humanity itself.

Might be different types of Angels. For all we know he was either a more mature Angel or a different species of it. The Angels in the DLC clearly use Light spells, while Darklurker created Darksigns in the air and used Fire and Dark spells and had 4 arms. His Souls was also Light, strangely enough. Perhaps those that weren't bad people become Angels?

Humans have both light and dark in them, see: you level up with light souls, grafting them to the surface of your own (which has a lump of Humanity at it's core). Human souls, or at least the souls of powerful undead, are a core of humanity surrounded by a shell of "normal" light souls.

Normal sorceries and Oolacile sorceries channel this shell. Dark sorceries take advantage of the unique properties of the Humanity at the souls' core, either driving the humanity wild before casting it (making Abyss sorceries like pursuers) or not driving it wild before casting it (making Deep sorceries like Deep soul)
>>
>>167899167
Darklurker sure does look like an angel. It's not like he looks like anything else, at least.

Maybe he didn't actually die. Maybe he was just testing us. Or maybe we're his pilgrim.

>>167899184
Counterpoint: said light sorceries originate in that human kingdom, and the light being used doesn't resemble Gwyn's sunlight in any way. This is in addition to the similarities it does have with dark magic, the time and space twisting. There aren't many other things it could be.

Angels being so heavily connected to the dark and yet casting light spells of their own seems like solid evidence, too.

No, you're missing the point.

Humanity is 100% dark. It casts dark shit, that's all it does. It is the Dark Soul, it is Darkness.

Eh. Ultimately, I'm assuming angels are closely related to and use the dark, and not that they're composed of other, non-dark souls. The reason for this assumption is that they're in the Deep to begin with, which is supposed to be the final point where humanity sinks to.

That said, if the Deep is like an ocean, the comparison falls apart. Fish aren't made of water, they only swim in it. This could imply the angels are made of something separate from the dark, with one possible case being that "shell" of souls you mentioned, separated and cast off in the process of the pilgrim's Humanity sinking. A being literally composed of light. The light miracles deal physical damage, so they might even be physical, hard light.

I guess the wings look awfully fin-like, too.

This is actually true but just starting out. Average incomes of philosophy majors is higher than expected but that's because there are a lot of really bright people who majored in that because they had nothing else they wanted to study. There are very few of these people though but they bring up the average significantly.

It's a boon for me now that I have experience and proven results in my field but it wasn't a springboard to dat green.

Also there are a lot of out of work engineers because universities churn them out so quickly and most are worthless.

There was no separation of philosophy and religion until well into the modern period, religion as the base understanding of how the world works was the operating base level assumption for a long time and we sholdn't throw out their work because of it, most of the important work done in the west between the Greeks and the 17th century was done by clerics working within the confines of the church, it's still important.

quality opens up so many options, that I can recommend just one. I'm this >>167885029 fag, and I personally switch out weapons A LOT. I use lothric knight sword, claymore, astora's greatsword, twin princes greatsword, crows quills, just a ton of different stuff.

But if you want unique fun weapons then I think twin princes greatsword is my all time favorite in that department. It's weapon art never gets old. Problem is you need to make it out of 2 boss weapons on NG+. Close seconds would be lothric knight sword (it just feels right) and onikiri and ubadachi or crows quills. Valorheart I personally don't use, but it could be fun for you as well. Really though, with quality, the game is your oyster.

Causality is not up for debate here. It was not necessary for all of the elemental shit to come about. All paths of reasoning are like the branches of a tree. Some branches lead to dead ends. And by definition those dead ends are useless, only serving as reminders of what path not to take.

Yeah, but lies are part of reality in that sense. That doesn't make them true, and you shouldn't conflate truth/falsity with existence. I can call my textbook old, heavy, useful, etc, and those claims themselves might be true or false, but it the textbook itself isn't either one. You could say that the claims which the writing within the text represents is true or false, but the book itself simply either "is" or "is not," to put it bluntly.

From there on out it depends on who you ask though. Some people are going to say that claims themselves are things that "are," other people are going to deny that. Applies to things like properties as well.

>>167900941
It's not a great call to look at all failures and consider them wastes of time like that. If I wanted, I could try and argue that even dumb shit like Thales's claim that everything is made out of water even has merit (it was the earliest known conception of atomic theory, and from biological perspective it's at least a good starting point for study), but I think even that would be extraneous of me. I'd rather not even make excuses, and instead just say that complete and utter failures are still redeemed by future success. I mean, look at empirical study for example. If your objective is to simply avoid being wrong, you'll end up just making flexible explanations of data and talking people around in Freudian circles. Ultimately you want to present falsifiable things to test. Even if you learn that you essentially learned nothing, you at least learned that thing.

and if Greek philosophers had done just that, none of us would be here today because the world as we know it right now is the one where they didn't and instead argued their own theory for centuries. but we can't quantify anything about this hypothetical world either because it doesn't exist - the world that does exist is the world where Greeks thought Earth was Dry & Cold and passed that on to the philosophers that followed them. it might be a factually incorrect system but it is one that has inherent value because it existed in a world that still exists.

I agree with you entirely, and as you said, you could continue to argue for Thales' claim using more modern information, but it would be a waste of time.

there isn't anything inherently wrong with a side story, but what DaS2 tried to do was introduce a lot of new ideas/twists on core components of the setting like the nature of the Dark, the nature of the Cycle, etc., but then it really didn't put forth a good effort at integrating them with what we already knew about how the setting worked, so it seemed rather awkward.

so you're time-traveling back into the past using memory bullshit when you access Drangleic, right? that was the point of the memory fireflies around that tree? because I thought that there was a time limit on how long you could stay in the past using this method, but you're obviously stuck in Drangleic's past forever

It's where kingdoms fall to when they ruin. It's like the end of the world, as a moment in time, also as a physical place that exists concurrent with every moment of time.

When cycles end and kingdoms fall to ruin, they sink into the Dreg Heap.

bullshit, all that happens when you link the fire is that the lights turn back on, the Undead all spontaneously die, and everything else proceeds as normal, but with a lot less Undeath around. Case in point: when Ludleth linked the flame, nothing changed and Lothric kept puttering on as it had done before Guntyr showed up late to the party

the Dreg Heap is something new, anon, a product of all the world collapsing into a single point in space, and the Deep arising from the depths because of this to mix in with the garbage scattered all over the place. It didn't always exist in the background, there was just the Deep and the "normal" world
>>
>>167904246

Jumps into the Deep, and wakes up in a water-filled area somewhat like the Abyss in a different point in time/place. Even seems like there's Archtrees. Drangleic had fallen to the Dark, where time froze it at the point it fell.

Dark Firelink proves that Lothric also fell to Dark, and what we visit is simply a frozen point in time within the Deep.

We were in the Deep all along. Everything has already been consumed. We were never free. It was all just illusions to help those trapped in here cope with the reality.

So, now that the game is finally coming to a close, can we establish in a coherent fashion who exactly the big players of the conflict are and what exactly they want?

DSI had Gwyndolin orchestrating the Undead prophecy and following Gwyn's will to renew the Age of Fire, and Kaathe attempting to disrupt the process and make you forsake the Flame.

DSII had Queen Nashandra's machinations to get her hands on a soul strong enough to satiate the Fire due to her desire for power, King Vendrick trying to cut her off from the Kiln, and Aldia trying to convince you it is all screwed either way so you might as well get the hell out while you can.

Meanwhile, DSIII has:
>Sulyvahn spreading the Cult of the Deep while feeding Best Boys to his pet blob monstrosity, whose goals are to generally be as gigantic a cunt as possible
>Kaathe again, who realized that just waiting for the Flame to die naturally wouldn't work well and has devised a method to have it contaminated by Dark, while simultaneously trying to rebuild the Dark Soul the Pygmy shattered by gathering its particles of Humanity.
And I'd also say
>Ludleth, who threw a spanner in the machinations of the other two by linking the Fire when the world was literally seconds away from being undone [as seen in the Untended Graves] but has no bigger plan other than guiding Unkindled to link the Fire even though it is no longer feasible

So, what did I get wrong?

You're getting there.

You go down from the active world, the world of fire, to reach the Dreg Heap. You "sink" down to it, because the Dreg Heap is the "Deep" layer of the world.

Descending deeper, and deeper, and deeper until you're at the deepest part of the Dreg Heap and that;s where it ceases to simply be Deep anymore, and becomes Abyssal.

Go high enough in the Dreg Heap and you enter the world of Fire. Go deep enough, and you enter the Abyss. The bottom of the Abyss is fuck knows where. It probably doesn't have a bottom, just like the sky doesn't have a top. The bottom of the Dreg Heap is the top of the Abyss.
>>
>>167905680

Firelink Shrine can traverse time itself, which we know. The only time anything can do that is by utilizing the Abyss, which is known to distort time. We've already seen Firelink in Lothric was consumed. Abyss is like the space between worlds. Each world that gets consumed gets spit out somewhere else.

Abyss is a term with an explicitly oceanic etymology and connotation. Look at the visual design of DaS1, the Abyss is very clearly water-themed. There's even fucking coral growing up from the ground.

It goes like this:
Current Age
|
|
Dreg Heap
|
|
Abyss

Everything below the current age is "Deep." The Depth refers to its place in this structural hierarchy of space and time. As you sink deeper into it, you eventually reach a depth where it's no longer simply "Deep" and becomes "Abyss" because abyss is the absolute deepest reaches of the ocean.

Deep in general is a more placid version of the Abyss because it's the transitory state, the calm, downward motion of stagnant dark as it sinks towards the depths. That's why Deep isn't just a thing, it's prophecy. It's a process of being drawn downwards towards an inevitability. The ultimate fate of each sinking dreg is implied in its nature as a dreg.

Clearly not, since they explicitly told us that the Ringed City is suspended over the Abyss at the very deepest level of the Dreg Heap.

Manus is the Father of the Abyss in that he brought it into this world and set it loose, mad, on humankind. The Abyss itself is Humanity. It's the Age of Dark looking to begin, the Dark equivalent to the First Flame. It flares up wherever there's a collection of humanity with a will, but it's largest piece remains at its home, in the deepest depths of the world. The Ringed City is literally the home of the Dark Soul, so naturally it's largest mass of Abyss.

Actually it goes like this:

Current world
I
I
Linked to First Flame therefore Abyss denied
I
I
Dreg Heap/First Flame _ _ _ Not Linked therefore Abyss sends it to Dreg Heap _ _ Failed World

In other words, a world Linked to the First Flame will live a bit longer, however it will eventually be consumed by Dark, which will send it to the Dreg Heap to be sent into the Abyss and fuck knows what happens then.

Or you can paint a new one and live in that. However, that painting will rot, especially if the Deep takes over the world the painting is in, allowing Deep insects to eat away at the painting. Best to set that world on Fire, unlike those fools on the outside.

That said, Ludleth said "So I will'd myself Lord, to link the fire, to paint a new vision."

We see only a bit of Lothric in the lit Firelink Shrine, not all of it. It might just be a world that was painted of the original.

No, the Abyss is not "natural" humanity, it is artificially created by mutating the Dark Soul with sorcery. It did not even exist until the Oolacile sorcerers fucked with Manus' humanity and drove it mad, before then there was just "natural" humanity aka the Deep. It's creation is an exact mirror to how the Witch of Izalith created the Chaos Flame.

The Age of Dark is the Deep, not the Abyss. This is further reinforced by how DaS2 and DaS3 both state that the Age of Dark is peaceful, gentle, and embraces like a lover. Like how the Deep is stated to be in the description of Deep Protection. Not like the Abyss, which is caustic and kills everything it touches.

You have the relationship between the Deep and the Abyss totally backwards with respect to how they represent humanity. the Deep is humanity in it's natural form, and the Abyss is the corruption. It's not some fundamental SUPER-DEEP DEEP layer of reality, it is an aberration that should not exist.

The Chosen Undead has nowhere near the level of power of the Champion of Ash. The Chosen rung two bells. The Champion was blessed by the power of five different Lords [six if you count Lorian who went along for the ride], which granted by the time it happens is not really anywhere near as much as a normal full-power Lord but is still a lot more than what the Chosen Undead gets.

Yeah, he was probably having a real nice sleep until some fucks woke him up.

What drove Manus mad is a story the player is never privy to. All we know is that it involves his obsession with that broken pendant. The Abyss motif in the DLC is all about humanity being driven by some emotion or will to seek contact with others, which is an obvious and deliberate reflection of Manus' will for that Pendant (and for Dusk, who he kidnapped for some reason).

Going from that to "evil majicks" is just hilarious.

The story of 3 is basically the apocalypse is nigh on the Souls universe since the fire is dying so dead guys who fucked up linking the fire previously are brought back to life since they're that desperate for people to link it. The people who should link the fire have all fucked off and you have to kill them to gain the fire inside them to power the teleportation ritual to the Kiln of the First Flame. In the beginning there was an endless expanse of grey stone crags, stone dragons and stone archtrees. Then the Fire appeared and created light, and with it dark and the hollows, who were essentially small stone trees took their souls from the flame, and the Furtive Pygmy the Dark Soul. Gwyn, one of those with the Lord Souls from the flame lead a rebellion against the dragons, using his lightning and Nito's miasma of death and disease to strip them of their scales that gives them immortality. Also Seath, a bitch dragon no one liked helped. Then Gwyn linked the Fire to the bonfires and used it to spread the light, his kingdom and the age of fire. Eventually the flame started to fade and the Witch of Izalith, another one of the lord souls tried to use sorcery on her own soul to create a new first flame, this backfired and created Chaos, Demons and Pyromancy and true fire sorcery was lost. Also somewhere in here in the kingdom of Oolacile some sorcerers awaken a Primeval Human and cause his soul to run amok, creating the abyss. cont

PERISH THE THOUGHT

The world is kept running by a big deific fire

That fire is going out

The world is ending

This isn't the first time this has happened. When the fire starts to go out, some great God or hero sacrifices themselves, casting their body into the flame to become its new source of fuel. This restores the flame and sets the clock back on the world, starting a new cycle.

These heroes who sacrifice themselves are called Lords of Cinder.

This time, however, no hero has stepped forward to make that sacrifice. In desperation, they revived some Lords of Cinder from the past to offer what little power they have left and re-sacrifice themselves, hoping it will be enough to save the flame.

The Lords all unanimously decline this.

With no other options, the player character, and various other "Unkindled" are brought back from the dead to chase down these Lords and force them to save the flame. They have to bring random dead losers back to do this because they're basically nobody else left. The Apocalypse is nigh and the world is just that far gone.

As the world ends, it collapses in on itself, sort of like how the illuminated area of a fire recedes as it dies. The world now basically just consists of the capital of the current civilization, Lothric, and the ruined realms of the revived Lords, all jammed together in this mess of geographic cavitation.

There's several factions and interests who all want to do something different about the dying flame and they compete to sway you for their own goals and beliefs. There's also a lot of shit regarding the deeper metaphysics of the world and it's creation mythos which gradually becomes relevant to the DLCs, but that's not anything you'd have to worry about for now. Play the first game to get that side of the story.

also somewhere in here Humans start to be afflicted by an undead curse, Gwyn realizes the fire is dying and sets out to rekindle the flame using his own soul, this prolongs the age of fire for a while but by DaS1 it's just about over.

DaS2 is canon and important despite what people will tell you but it's not directly relevant to the overarching lore.

By the time of DaS3 countless civilizations have risen and fallen into semi ages of dark as the descendents of Gwyn's gods and the lords of human kingdoms kindle the flame, but every time they do it the souls they're kindling it with get a little more burnt out, by DaS3 they're merely embers and even if you link the fire there's simply not enough fuel for it to live for very long, as well the abyss, the undead curse and like 3 or 4 other separate, possibly related possibly not apocalypses are happening at once.

>>
>>167909635
Were all the lords always evil or do they fight you because "fuck that I ain't going back?" Also, how are they alive if they sacrificed themselves?
>>
>>167910006
The abyss is a viral sorcery that harnesses the power of the Dark, the Dark soul is the essence of the Dark taken from the flame, since without light there is no darkness and the flame created both. It's also known as Humanity and is deeply routed in the fundamental nature of mankind. The Deep is the mass of Dark sitting at the edge of the bubble of light around the flame.

It's an action RPG you need things to fight.
>>
>>167910141
Well yeah come on but from a story perspective. The abyss is creating these monsters or it's a natural occurrence as the light dims? Each lord is an asshole who controls an army and is using them to take over what's left of the world?
>>
>>167909994
Where does this information come from? He seems very willing as far as his in-game dialogue is concerned
>>
>>167910129
One of the lords is ambiguously evil and has other plans. You learn about him fairly quickly so there's no need to really explain it here.

The other two have their own reasons for abandoning their duty and you'll learn about that as you go. They aren't evil, but we're talking godlike beings that cast themselves into fire and burned for an eternity to keep the world going, then got brought back when they were burned out to do it all again. It's a different perspective.

As for "how," the game just says "a bell tolled." Bells have ambiguous magical significance in souls games that's never fully explained, but they have a tendency to bridge worlds, awaken the dead and do other crazy stuff on behalf of the first flame. Here you can think of it just like the dead Lords being brought back by whatever power of flame was left in them.

Note that dead things coming back to life, or being unable to stay dead is a consequence of the apocalypse itself. The flame is the source of both life and death, so as it weakens, the boundaries between the two come down.
>>
>>167910129
Yhorm just wanted to be left alone, the Abyss Watchers were too busy killing each other, Aldrich was taking a nap, and Lothric didn't want to link the fire.
For Yhorm Aldrich, and the Watchers, there might have been an element of not wanting to return, seeing as they would vividly remember being roasted alive, and not wanting to do that again. Like us, they were brought back to life after sacrificing themselves with the tolling of the bell, except for Lothric who was sitting around in his throne room and waiting for the fire to die
>>
>>167910129
They fight you cause they don't want to die, they all their own specific motivations and plans but the big one is you're literally just hunting them.

>>167910006
>things trying to kill me

A big part of the atmosphere and aesthetic is that the world is indifferent to your presence and is full of cosmically significant processes and people that you just watch happen and maybe play your part in. Most boss fights you literally just walk into their house, stab them and take their soul cause its really big and would make good kindling for the fire.

>>167910240
In DaS1 you're given the vague goal by the Primordial Serpents Kaathe and Frampt to (for different reasons) kill the bearers of the lord souls because those souls are very powerful, Frampt wants you to use them as kindling for the fire Kaathe wants you to use them to get strong and become the dark lord. In DaS3 the lords of cinder collectively decide that linking the fire won't fix anything because the world is doomed, and they bet on an age of dark and maybe a new fire rising, you're the Ashen One, spawned by the bonfire from the ashen remnants of a failed undead as a last ditch fail safe to hunt down the lords of cinder and do what they won't.

The abyss is more like a zombie plague than truly evil, it causes people to mutate into thriving violent masses of humanity and act unpredictably.
>>

He must have made some sort of deal with a trickster god, a lifetime of treasure hunting and stabbing people in the back in exchange for something. It's possible he made a deal with Amygdala in BB; he's had a track record of hating clerics and religion, is now serving a god in a mutated form, and is relatively unfazed to find that the god has been killed. The deal fell through in his favor, so he had a free reign
>>
>>167911897
>she hates sinners
More like she chronicles all sins and make sure they are properly organized, so that the proper parties can mete out judgement and retribution when necessary. I don't particularly recall Velka being stated as ever directly punishing someone for their sins. On the contrary, her pardoners are the only way to expunge said sins from the annals of the gods, and to attain redemption.

Which is why I particularly like the theory that Velka is the narrator of the series. That would mean that the Intro of Dark Souls I is essentially the Goddess of Sin chronicling the original sin carried on by the Lords themselves.

Chaos is less damage than fire but it scales with humanity, crystal is very high damage and no reduced scaling but massively reduced durability and you lose the ability to repair it.

What are your stats? Honestly elemental weapons are kind of shitty end game compared to normal +15 upgrades with scaling. For what its worth though you only have one enemy left, he's resistant to lightning and weak to fire.

I guess elemental would work since your scaling stats aren't great, generally you want 40 (50 for magic) in at least one dominant stat and then swing around a weapon that scales well with it, or in the case of quality builds where you go 40/40 dex/str decent scaling with both.

Chaos is probably your best bet, with lightning for fire resistant enemies on the way

Should I make it fire +10 or chaos? You said chaos does less damage than fire?

The mushroom babies run around aimlessly and the parents want you to stay the fuck away from their babies

Fire has higher base damage but chaos scales with soft humanity and balances out to be stronger when you have the max on you (only 10).
Assuming you havn't been doing crazy amounts of pvp I'm assuming you have enough of a stock of humanities to easily just pop 10 before the boss, and if you ever lose your bloodstain pop some more.
