Ok so, I'm totally new to Tekken and 3D fighters in every single way, but Tekken 7 looks fuckin' ballin', so I'm trying out Tekken 6 on PPSSPP.

I don't get the usage of sidestepping all that much. Maybe because I'm a dirty 2D player but because of the ability to sidestep i find myself doing it all the fucking time. When I play my friend, no matter what he's doing he always catches me.
My question is: when - GENERALLY - is it acceptable to be sidestepping? Is it only for dodging specific things? Making big reads? Or is it generally better to just backdash all day? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Backdashes are safer than side steps, but you can get bigger damage and better positioning from a sidestep in most 3d games. You do them when you think your opponent is going to do some risky, slow, linear moves. In Virtua Fighter, it's a little easier because you go really far with an offensive move, but in Tekken, you have to time it a little better with most characters. If your opponent is doing a move that has tracking or has fast recovery, side stepping is more risky as they can just hit you again or already hit you with the tracking move.


Also, be sure to read/watch lots of guides since there's so much specific system knowledge you need for 3d games, which is often way more important than actual character knowledge.

Compared to a game like Guilty Gear, where many characters have different movement options and the info on how your specific character and their routes work is far more important than anything else. All SFxT needed was mechanic overhaul. The framework of a good game was there.
just a bit too much going on for its own good. Also, the combo system was deep but once optimal combos were found, it became rare to see anything but those. the balance was great though by 2013

I would remove boost combos, gems, and pandora.
Probably make tag combos cost less/no resources too to make matches faster
