In the beginning there was an endless expanse of grey, stone crags, stone archtrees and stone dragons. Then the flame appeared and created light and dark, dualistic aspects of itself, think of the flame as the center of the universe, the light it casts off a bubble around it as the world we know and everything outside that the dark. the hollows which were literally just empty stone things, essentially the same as the archtrees took their souls, the essence of the flame's light from it, and the pygmy took the dark soul the essence of dark. This is why souls and humanity are two separate things. With the lord souls Gwyn and his buddies did all the things they did in the intro to das, building a kingdom inside the light around the flame and linking it to the bonfires to extend the kingdom, physically extending the bubble of light into the dark, he also gave the pygmies the ringed city, which I'm gonna take to be the literal ring of twilight at the edge of his realm, pygmy descended humans populated his kingdom as well and have both humanity and souls, we can assume the pygmies would have much less souls and much more humanity than humans in Londor, if any souls at all.
With the cycle every time the flame is linked its like adding a fresh layer of kindling to the bed of ashes in a fire, but less and less every time. The light and the world of it slowly shrank back and weakened as layer and layer of fresh ashes were added to the base of the world, ash lake and the primordial dragon landscape. The ringed city if its then literally the ring of twilight around the light has been growing into the layers of ash and detritus of civilization as the dark advances.
The deep, the dark and the abyss are all more or less the same thing, the opposite substance of light, if this were a sci fi universe it'd be anti matter, the abyss is Manus' (a primordial human, a pygmy) sorcerous attempts to bring the dark in gone viral.

Magic is viable but not fun.
Int is stuck with shit spells for a long time and their first real vendor is too late, forcing you to use boring shit for a while.
Even then, you don't get proper nuking spells until very late, and none of the unique spells are actually any decent at doing damage. As a result, you're stuck going pewpew for slow damage for most of the game. Your final scroll and crystal spells are locked behind the Grand Archives, meaning you access them only after finishing 90% of the game.

The fucky way that scaling interacts with upgrade level for casting tools also means that it's difficult to balance your leveling for most of the game.

Pyro has it a little better since they get their first vendor 2 areas earlier and most of the earlygame is weak to fire anyways. You also get your endgame spells in the Smouldering Lake, less than halfway through the game. This causes your damage and power to spike so sharply that the rest of the game is effectively trivialized while you blow up bosses in like 5 shots of vestiges.

Don't bother with miracles or dark. They're just that fucking bad.

DaS3 made the faith-based infusions worse and locked faith-based weapon buffs even deeper into the game.

Lightning spears are faster but much weaker and do like 30% damage at range, forcing you to melee with them. Even at point-blank, they only do about as much damage as a single R1 from a raw weapon, but take the time and stamina of 3 attacks while also consuming FP. Their FP cost is also obscenely high, as high for the basic lightning spear as for end-tier nukes from other casting schools. It's not possible to have enough FP earlygame to rely heavily on casting offensive miracles, and they're straight inferior to just swinging a weapon anyways. There's no benefit to leveling faith except to access some basic healing spells and Tears of Denial.

Great Lightning Spear is a covenant reward locked behind Lothric Castle, and Sunlight Spear is made from the soul of the final boss. Your only upgrade to the base lightning spear is Lightning Stake, which is a slow melee spell that only does like 10% damage if you don't hit it dead-on

Also they slowed down WoG so much it takes about 4 seconds of channeling to cast. Every other offensive miracle is similarly gimped, taking both longer to cast, more FP and doing less damage than any non-faith equivalent.

Remember you can go throughout Dark Souls 3 without a Darksign and still come back to life. You're Undead without the Darksign, but a slave to the Gods. Miracles aren't bad as a whole. The support miracles are very convenient and will save you from using too much estus early on in the game where it's scarce. Then, later on, you can use regen miracles with the chime WA to save even more estus. There are also plenty of decent buffs you can use (Although some are locked behind covenants, unfortunately.), so the school as a whole is fine for providing survivability. The problem with miracles comes from their offensive variants-- most of which are pretty underwhelming. It also doesn't help that the stronger miracles have to be either cast point-blank (The Spear family, Lightning Stake...) or have excruciatingly long cast times (Wrath of the Gods, Divine Pillars of Light...) that aren't really made up for with raw damage. Then there's the fact that you have to invest in a LOT of Faith in order for these miracles to do any semblance of damage that couldn't just be done by a few R1s from a weapon. To make matters worse, there aren't even many weapons that make use of the FAI stat, and many, despite being heavily related to Lightning or divinity, hardly even have FAI scaling and are practically quality weapons. It's just horribly balanced and needs some heavy reworking.

If you want to use greataxes, you're better off pumping STR and grabbing the greataxe off one of the high wall hollows, killing dancer and DSA and using the DSGA.

If your mag adjust is very high (~50 fth with top tier talisman) then you'll want to level up your DMB. SLB is the same as +0 DMB, only lightning damge. CMW might be good too if you cast it with TCC, haven't used it though.

He was a notorious noob stomper when the game was still new, even with summons. A lot of people just skipped him and came back later when they outleveled the area.
