One of my dwarves was possessed

help what do
>>
>>167753195
Give them what they want, also read http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Strange_mood
>>
>>167753492
Alright, so he wants to make something although im not sure what
Also my keep losing goblets which somehow are found right after in the hospital, im not sure if thats related
>>
>>167753819
It's rarely possible to predict what he will make (though it will likely be something useless). But that's not important, what's more important is that he gets all his materials. If he doesn't get them, better wall him off, just in case.

Are they just lying around in the hospital or are they in a stockpile there? Do you have any patients?
>>
>>167754153
Nobody was a patient, and they were on one of the beds, as well as a spilled pool of the wine that was in them
right now hes just chilling out in the temple
>>
>>167754324
So the possessed dwarf hasn't claimed a workshop yet? That's not good... what are his highest profession skills? Do you have the relevant workshops?

I don't know how that could have happened. I don't recall ever having problems with goblets not being stored properly.
>>
>>167754557
He's a leather worker, but I dont have a leather workshop or leather to use in one, so this may go badly
>>
>>167754661
Okay built a leather works, http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Leather_works, he may not need leather per se, you don't know what he needs till he claims a workshop.
>>
So, a female human poet went into my tavern and I wanted to catch her, so I got some unarmed dwarf assigned to attack her so she runs into a cage. But does anyone know why this doesnt work? Even though she never saw the traps (placed them after her arrival) she never activates the traps when she is fleeing and she is not even considered an enemy once she falls unconcsious from all the beating.

Anyone knowing how you can achieve this?
>>
>>167754661
Also forgot to tell you this, but you have about 40 days from the start of the mood untill he goes insane.
>>
>>167754758
Ok done, and now hes claimed it, hopefully I dont have to murder him soon, thanks for the help

Oh god yeah, I'm gonna do a full rebuild once the artifact stuff comes out anyways, but I figured I'd get as much of the bugs as I can out of the way now.

Does anyone happen to know how to make regional resurrection reactions work?

I've got the demon renaming and such going fine, found an art of cutting slab in the fort I started in, ha ha, yay, still having trouble getting the demiurges to secure a position in a civ reliably though.

Haven't picked a fight with an angel yet, though I found two of them beating up Incubus, poor fucker is running and dodging, then I run in and start hacking at them.

Did some more research on world map sizes.

In particular I looked up the size of human towns. Most of the time, it seems like they stick to 17x17 embark tiles. In some cases they get "squeezed" between other sites, in which case their size will vary, but 17x17 seems to be their "default" size.

This should translate to 1.632x1.632 kilometers.

Out of sheer interest, I decided to compare it with the size of the world map in GTA III. I failed to find any clear answer on the internet (there were many conflicting accounts), so I had to start the game up and take some measurements myself. In the end I got the map size data from GTA III, and I made a small infographic where I compared it to a town in DF.

Here's what I ended up with. Really makes you think huh.
>>
>>167762856
What does that map assume each in-game grid square is? 2m x 2m or 1m x 1m?
>>
>>167763374
2x2 meters per tile, as Toady confirmed.

It does sound a bit arbitrary (especially since two people can't share a tile while standing), but it's what we have to go by. It also makes sense since a bed fits in one tile.

A collossus fitting in a 2x2 meter space doesn't sound that weird, to be honest (although imagining it fitting in a building with a 3 meter high roof does sound weird).

In any case, creatures can't really be compared to furniture, since the way in which they exist in and interact with the world is fundamentally different.

A large map is 257 world tiles wide. That means 197376 in-game tiles. If we accept the notion that one tile is two meters, we end up with about 395 kilometers.

The circumference of the Earth, however is more than 40 000 kilometers long. It's quite a bit more than the large DF world.
>>
>>167771408
What? A large map is 257x257 world tiles
>>
>>167771939
Yeah, so? It doesn't contradict my post. For simplicity's sake, I just used the width.

If one of the axes of the game world is less than 1% of Earth's circumference, then how in the world do you imagine the game world could be as large as Earth?

Where can I find the raws for mud? I've looked around everywhere but I can't find it. I've looked in material_template_default and all the inorganic materials, but still nothing. I need to change the color token of it because I thought I would be able to create verdant green underground pastures but apparently that's impossible without soil, as muddy stone just makes your moss shit brown.

Hang on.

tile: 2x2x1 m
embark tile (1x1 fort @15 z sky): 48x48 tiles, 96x96x~15 m
world tile (left most screen on embark), 16x16 embark tiles, 768x768 tiles, 1536x1536x~15 m

The campsite I'm in the middle of here covers 3x3 embark tiles, 144x144 tiles, 288x288x15 m

The bottom left patch of brown in your town map should be a 2x2 embark tile chunk, roughly 192x192 m, the central tower in the keep should be right around 15 or 18 tiles I think, the walls should be right about 50 tiles square, each one is at least three tiles thick, just for trivia purposes.

The travel map coordinates on a small world run from 0x0 in the top left corner to 815x815 at the bottom right, a large world extends down to 12335x12335 at the bottom right, and that should work out to ~394 km^2 I think?

I think it's just one embark tile, friendo.

I measured the towns on the embark screen, and there they showed up as being 17x17 embark tiles (one embark tile wider than a world tile) wide. The "squares" of brown dirt on the map seem to coincide perfectly with those tiles. I mean, it looks like 16 or 17 of them would fit sideways on the map.

Yeah, I've been screwing around in the arena and overjudged the keep size quite a bit, it's right at 50x50 tiles or 1x1 embark tile for the keep, so that chunk of dirt is right about the same size.

They actually can climb up to that fortification quite easily, as you can climb diagonally upwards. What you want is either of these. The first stops climbing because creature's can't climb on floors, as only tree branches can be held from underneath. The second one is how I usually make my walls since it gives archers immunity to non-elite enemy archers.

There are no town invasions or battles you can participate in. They just stay in camps forever until you leave and then you come back and the entire town is dead.

[NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:5] or higher on all the races, give some of them [ETHIC:SLAVERY:ACCEPTABLE] and some of them [ETHIC:SLAVERY:UNTHINKABLE] then enjoy the hugely inflated armies, the higher skilled bandits/soldiers, and the much more regular wars.

One of you fuckers wrote a script to find wars but it's not in my ksbd mod folder so I'll have to dig it up later, but it goes through and stops world-gen when it detects relevant wars, and another one of you noticed that when the screen starts updating the calendar you can run:
gui/gm-editor scr

This pulls up the year/year_tick fields and you can change year_tick to end the update now, or you can make it end at like almost the next year if you want!

>>167800104
That block of soldiers there?

First time I bumped into the * on the map I thought the game had froze.

It took me several tries to figure out I had to wait until they loaded on the screen out of travel mode instead of bumping into them.

Ram use on that world sat at like .9 GB usually... that army loading pushes it up to like 2.1~2.2 GB.

I killed the process and watched where they went, which ended up being a town.

I stood in the town and waited, and then everything freezes for like ten minutes, and KABAM! 4000 elves load on the screen and start fucking shit up.

I mean I know one can increase the amount of wars that happen, but I have never seen an actual attack on a town happen when I was in it. The invading armor just stays in camps forever and nothing happens.

Yeah, this world was with the discipline and ethics fuckery, but it didn't have the slavery trick, as that seems to be the most consistent trigger I've seen outside of the endless slog between babysnatcher/item thief/utterances groups.

With slavery acceptable/unthinkable it goes into wars over values and causes and shit so people hold the grudges for decades and build up goddamn massive armies.

Doing this I've seen multiple times looking through legends where there are three/four thousand strong armies just running around buttfucking everyone, and you always kinda expect them to be abstracted, but no, they aren't always.

Scroll up a couple posts: there's a reason you can set a cap on invader numbers now, and that's without fucking around with modding anything to get kilosoldier armies running around.

Memes are memes, giant animals are still nasty if they're bitchy, doubly so when they're rotting soulless horrors scraping at the doors of your home.

those memes as you put it were fun, Carp dragging dwarves to a watery death. An elephant taking 5 dwarves to take down, Forgotten beasts made out of adamantine that you couldnt kill without collapsing a tunnel on them.

god dammit it i want the economy back, AND guilds and the various other noble positions that were taken out.

Swim to the surface to drink? I've never actually tried to drink anything underwater.
As for sleeping, even if you can't go to sleep on purpose underwater, you probably can't die from sleep deprivation, so worst case scenario is that you end up a narcoleptic horseshoe crab man who passes out from exhaustion every few steps. Which sounds like a hilarious story that I want to read.
>>
>>167805518

>>
>>167808842
That... does sound amusing, though I'm getting flashbacks of a stint I had playing FFXI.

I was camping a notorious monster up across a glacier that was once leading up to the end-boss and all that jazz, there are these creepy fomor dudes running around, look like the elvaan dudes except pitch black skin, I'm waiting for a certain one to spawn to try and get the knuckles I want for leveling monk, but the spawn was like 11 or 16 hours or some shit?

So my sleep schedule keeps getting more and more fucked and I finally ended up spending a couple of days straight just kinda chatting with my friends and murdering fomors right?

Then I look up and notice that the guy I've been talking to is a fomor, I fell asleep at some point in the past hour, and I've got several rather concerned messages from my friends who ended up coming up there, getting me into a party with them, and warping me back to my homepoint when I fell asleep finally after they learned I was talking to fomors by myself all night.

Yeah, I was assuming you would have a container with something potable (which you could probably drink underwater anyway). In retrospect that isn't a very good assumption. I suppose you could just mod your chosen species to be [NO_DRINK] if you're playing a saltwater dweller. It wouldn't be cheating in that case, right? You'd just be fixing an oversight.
>>
>>167809595

>>
>>167809648
Yeah, all the aquatic creatures have little hacky stopgaps like that anyways.

Fuck the economy, I want people to need food and drink, I want to break a siege by running down their supplies until they make a desperate charge and get slaughtered by my well-fed and rested axe lords and miners.

>>
>>167810154
With the saltwater critters, animal men are just a creature variation now that points at the animal raw and changes stuff over so it has hands and is closer to human sized.
>>
>>167810154
I forget the exact names of the files, but I'm thinking creatures_aquatic.txt and creatures_aquatic_new.txt? They'll be something like that. In raw/objects folder of DF, or the same in your region folder if you've already made your world. Ctrl+f BIOME:OCEAN and/or ANY_OCEAN. There are a lot of aquatic creatures with no man variants, so you'll find a bunch you can't play as. There will be plenty of playable choices in there, though.

How can I change my adventure mode character into a necromancer? Some anon last thread suggested save editing with dfhack but I'm not quite sure how to
>>
>>167812951
If they're an elf, you don't, if you REALLY want to do it without a new world you'll need to edit an interaction or pick a plant that won't get eaten or something.

Add this to an interaction or plant:

[INTERACTION:DEFAG_AN_ELF]
[I_TARGET:A:CREATURE]
[IT_LOCATION:CONTEXT_CREATURE]
[IT_MANUAL_INPUT:faggoty elf]
[I_EFFECT:ADD_SYNDROME]
[IE_TARGET:A]
[IE_IMMEDIATE]
[SYNDROME]
[CE_BODY_TRANSFORMATION:START:0]
[CE:CREATURE:DWARF:FEMALE]

Then find a slab and read it, or use dfhack to make one, open it with gm-editor, change the type to 6 secrets, change the line above it (info I think?) to like 5 or 6 and one of them should teach you necromancy, save beforehand of course in case it makes you a fagmummy or something.

Toady said he wants to have them going along, he doesn't have it in so you can have them lead you but you can totally accompany them or get them to join you and take them.

The armies are directly stated, that's the point of the spies and information transfer, plus one of the main purposes of fort mode squads is if you lose an artifact to a thief or to bargain your way through a siege by giving in to a demand you can try to recover it.

Similarly groups can send out squads to do this covertly, or they can use this as a cause for war.

I went to the top of a goblin dark fortress tower and found a goblin lord, and slew him. I have only been to a few dark fortresses but shouldn't a demon be there too? Or are they somewhere else? Also I killed about 300 or so of them, but I assume there is probably about 10k in there (9.7k now). How long will it take for them to replenish their numbers through births? Just one year?
>>
>>167846502
Only the first dark fortress of a goblin civ is connected to the underworld. This is usually also the only one which has a demon.

You can tell whether they are conected to the underworld or not by looking at their colours: those which are connected to the underworld are light purple, while those which aren't are dark gray.

1 to 400 in worldgen, and you can cover 100 z per layer for a total of 600 with a 100 z sky but I've yet to find an embark that exceeds 500 depth in prospect all, I can find stuff like -210 to 289 and whatnot but no luck on a full 600 depth, though I didn't use a worldgen that would drop mountains on top of oceans.

Don't autoattack.
Pick your foe, pick your target, very square and easy if you got it, unless there's a cyan ! which indicates what is basically a critical hit opportunity.
Multiattack, choose your weapon/whatnot, dodge a tile away to keep from being surrounded.
If you can afford to have a hand free so you can grab at a weapon you can dodge away and keep it, then drop it, use it, or throw it at another enemy.

Look up Kisat Dur, too much to explain here, but it's basically about abusing quirks of the combat system that makes stuff like Mamgozumid (Dragonfall) possible: start out sprinting into a foe > aim a grab at their weapon > aim a jump through them > aim another grab so they can't dodge easily > laugh and laugh and laugh.

Still have around 50 drawings to give them. sure I can hide a couple of Urists in the pictures.

The main reason for the drastic change in style is to distance myself from the project. personally feeling that it may be the ugliest drawings I have ever done, but the guy in charge thinks it is my best work yet (wonder what that means?) a lot of foul (but funny as hell) things in book. I think it for the best to make sure that my dean never catches wind that I worked on something like that.

Rate the personality of my elf I made in the Oldgenesis mod. He currently lives in a snakeman town in the center of a mountain valley. There is a pack of tree-dwelling goblins to the west, kobolds to the north, and dwarves to the east. To the south is a small desert that contains so many giant sandworms that any fool who ventures into it is certain to die.

Bogeymen are the most gamey aspect of Dwarf Fortress. Unlike anything else in the world, there is no history to them. They're just sorta there to act as an artificial barrier of difficulty and incentive to recruit companions. I don't see the problem with disabling them until more depth is added to the concept.
>>
This might be a dumb question. This is my first time playing DF, and I downloaded the Lazy Newb Pack. Is there a difference between starting up DF through the DF.exe and starting it up via the "Play Dwarf Fortress!" button on the LNP.exe?

people getting into the game while using LNP tend to stay lazy noobs for years.

my advice is that you start by learning the vanilla game. after that, you can choose whether you find it more convenient to use stuff like LNP (most experienced players find that it's more handy do change the settings in the vanilla init files, rather than using LNP).
>>
>>167887885
I usually disable them too. I don't really feel like killing them is very interesting story wise because there are unlimited boogeymen and they aren't really historical figures and don't affect anyone other than the player it seems.
>>
>>167887997
Launching through the LNP will launch dfhack as well, and any other utilities that are set to automatically launch with DF.

>>167888347
Many experienced players (myself included) think that LNP trains new players to have bad habits and retards their development as DF players. Everything that the LNP does regarding the vanilla can be done without it, and knowing how to will be useful for those periods where the LNP isn't up to date (like right now). The rest of it is just a bundle of utilities that, as a new player, you don't even know why you might want, and each of those is available for download individually anyway. Lazy Newb Pack is a misnomer, new players are the least likely people to get any use out of it.
>>
>>167888705
you do realise that as soon as we get the myths, bogeys will be history, right? like all generated creatures, they were merely a placeholder for more sophisticated mechanics.

it's not a matter of gitting gud, since that would assume that DF aimed to be a challenging or balanced game. Toady even explicitly said that balancing is not a part of his creative process.

it's all about the inner dynamics of the world. Toady wants it all to interact in an almost infinite number of interrelations. in this vision, the current bogeys hold no place, since they're completely detached from all other game mechanics.
>>
>>167888705
>Often crashes due to nothing inherent to DF itself.
It's not LNP that's crashing DF. LNP is just a launcher and bunch of utilities and tilesets. It's usually TWBT, which is enabled automatically in LNP.

Do you guys recommend any small mods while I play DF for the first time? I keep hearing Dwarf Therapist. Is that any good? Should I look into a tileset or should I git gus at ASCII?
>>
>>167890212
asskii is the way to go, friend. Also, I recommend you add in your own mods, once you learn how to edit the raws. It makes this already very fun game even more diverse, and adds a shitton to replayability, if you ever get bored of regular df.
>>
>>167890212
Dwarf therapist can be useful, but it's not really necessary. You should learn the game without it before you try it. I don't use it (or its dfhack analogue) personally. Knowing how to manage your dwarves' labors through the vanilla interface is important, and you won't if you start out using the rapist. Also, it's not up to date either.

As for tilesets, play however you like. It's just cosmetic. Vanilla isn't true ASCII anyway, it's an ASCII-like tileset based on CP347. Be advised that diagrams on the wiki and half or more screenshots you'll ever see use ASCII-like tilesets. If you learn vanilla first it's a lot easier to interpret those and translate that to interpretting a graphical tileset than the other way around.
>>

I'll probably add a tileset. I saw a few good ones that look pretty easy on the eyes.

In a big town?

Two possibilities:

1. There is a library there, possibly glitched with no exit, yet it probably contains several scholars from a goblin civ who are now determined to bite everyone to death.

2. The really bad news is if there is a market with glitched zombie merchants, they respawn, and the lagfuckery from a huge open area with everyone simultaneously trying to get in and battle/run away/etc is a nightmare.

Interestingly, the number of embark tiles for each world seems to coincide with the number of pixels on detailed maps of those worlds. If you take the amount of pixels on one axis of the detailed map, and divide it by the number of world map tiles, you end up with the number of embark tiles.

It seems like 1 pixel on the detailed map = 1 embark tile.

To test what I found out about town sizes yesterday a bit further, I tried applying a 17x17 grid on one of the exported maps.

Note how the grid coincides perfectly with the brown patches (which are actually the beach).

Also note how both the keep and the open-air marketplace are PERFECTLY enclosed within their own embark tiles. The marketplace is the square where each "building" has a dark brown outline. I didn't know they had such a clearly defined spatial extent.
>>
>>167926291
Also note how every building accounts for these tiles, and that no one is placed between two tiles. While some wall segments strech over tile boundaries, the watchtowers don't.

Here's a version of the map with a grid showing the site travel tiles.

Now someof the ordinary buildings are broken by the tiles.

HOWEVER, note that every single watchtower takes up one of these tiles, and that every site travel tile on the wall has one watchtower.

Also note that in the 3x3 tile keep, there's a clear division into the surrounding wall, and the courtyard, which takes up its own tile.

Fuck, this is interesting stuff. I didn't know about any of this until I started fucking with grids.

I tried it on a second town. It's pretty obvious now that the walls do indeed follow the site travel tiles.

It's pretty understandable too. I mean, they block your path on the site travel map, so it's understandable that Toady wants them to take site travel into account.

It's very possible that the roads also follow these tiles, but it's not as obvious as the walls.

Try using Isoworld, you'll see the grid (and other grids at bigger dimenisons) much clearer.

Check ou a large embark map (or travel around as adventurer) in Isoworld and note the way trees don't cross the grid and how landscape formations appear very blocky sometimes.
The shore in pic related for example.
>>
>>167934317
Also, a grid overlay can be toggled in Isoworld. It clearly reveals that waterfalls (i.e. changes in river elevation) are exclusively in between regional tiles - you can't embark on a waterfall - except two rivers joining, that's an exception.

Bogeys are pretty boring yeah, when I fight them it always ends in two ways, either I get my ass handed to me and I don't even manage to kill a single one, or I wipe the floor with them.

Fighting them isn't even a good way of getting experience, I still leave them on but still, they're not interesting.

Yeah, I figured I'd play a while with just a tileset. Are there any mods that are universally accepted as "everyone must have this"? Or are most mods kind of situational? Does dfhack have mostly gameplay mods or performance mods?

Well, dfhack isn't a mod and has nothing to do with them except enabling certain features of them.

It's a memory/game structures/data access/editing tool with various plugins and scripts that make use of this.

Everyone uses a tileset except the two people who play in a terminal window with ncurses mode.

Graphics sets (as df calls them for whatever reason) are the things that make the different creatures/units show up as different tiles with their own dedicated folder (in df/raw/graphics) from the tilesets the game uses to draw everything which isn't creatures with unique graphics (in df/data/art) and it's worth it to learn how to read ascii screenshots and whatnot, but icon guides help.

You can pull these: >>167944246
up by typing ? and scrolling down to the icons entries.

A different tileset is installed by doing stuff like saving this image in your df/data/art folder and changing the lines in df/data/init/init.txt which end in FONT:blahblah.png] (there's four, two font/fullfont, and two graphics_font/graphics_fullfont) so the blahblah.png is replaced with whatever you saved the tileset as, [FONT:vector_square24x36.png] as an example with this one, which is basically the default curses_640x300.png set without causing eye bleeding due to being larger and crisper for a native 1920x1080 screen.

That weirdness with rivers at embark tile borders where elevation changes that you're talking about has been around for as long as the z axis, it's just a relatively unusual thing to see and is probably a bug. You guys know how to make someone pull a lever with an alert going on? I'm new and trying to get my drawbridge up but all the civilians will waltz their stupid asses out the front door if I take them all off the alert for one of them to do it, and I can't find a way to get the military to do it. The wiki is little help.
>>
>>167754758
>he may not need leather per se
A little late with this correction, but that's wrong. A moody dwarf will always require a material appropriate to the profession they're mooding as the base for the artifact they create. So a moody leatherworker will always need at least one piece of leather, a mason will always need at least one boulder, a woodcrafter will always need at least one log, etc.
>>
>>167957582
If they're confined to a burrow they won't leave it to perform any jobs (including eating and drinking). So either let them out, or add the lever to your burrow. A burrow needn't be contiguous, you can drop one tile of the appropriate burrow onto the lever. I don't use civ alert burrows, so I'm not sure if they'll walk through disconnected burrow sections to do it. You might have to paint a path for them. In the future consider putting your panic button in your panic room to avoid this problem.

The adventurer camp sites thing, this shot is from the arena world which is limited to a single world tile but if it wasn't I could move over past the east edge and make a full campsite which overlaps onto this world tile from the one to the east, which I did with the campsite I dropped on that river-waterfall, but the fort only covered the 2x3 section in the eastern part of the campsite, so there's some weirdness going on there I meant.

Also, there's always the chance that agents in the ranks will be able to turn on their compatriots to try to claim an artifact after successfully retrieving one. Toady hasn't said specifically that this will be possible, but it seems like the new mechanics will support it.

>>167968876
Oldgenesis. Greatly expands crafting interactions and adds a dozen or so new races. Its pretty great in my opinion. A nice compromise between the cohesiveness of vanilla and all the crazy addons of Masterwork.

Conjure firebolt is my absolute favorite reaction though. They tried to add some rudimentary magic stuff. You can make firebolts and if you forget to throw them, you burst into flame.

>>167969538
Its muddy or something apparently. Maybe its only that cave. Either way my adventurer wusses out and says its disgusting. its fine though because I just drink mole blood instead. make sure to use the mole's skin to form a backback you can use to carry a long lasting supply of the stuff.

Fill something from a muddy pool and dump it out/refill and you can drink that water.

If you have an axe, find a tunnel tube, climb up in it and look for one of the pentagon tiles: ⌂

Move over onto it then lay down and stand up on that tile, then cut the tree down, it'll shoomp you up to the surface.

I don't know about underground trees (I've never cut one down) but I do know that aboveground trees are quite variable in yield. If you cut one down right after it stops being a sapling it'll yield only 2 logs in most cases I can recall. Also some species are higher yield than others, for example date palms yield exactly one log per Z level of height iirc, so I don't think I've ever gotten more than about 5 logs from one date palm tree.

Palm trees have another somewhat annoying limitation in that dwarves can't harvest fruit from them unless they can reach the top, and the fruit never falls to the ground. So you'll have to either construct a harvesting platform adjacent to the tree or get all your dates and coconuts from trees that are fairly young. And then to make it even more annoying, date palms have two types of fruit, date palm flower stalks, and dates, and if you harvest the flower stalks there won't be any dates that year. So you have to be careful to not have them pick fruit in the spring, but only the summer if you want actual dates.

While it seemed like that was ostensibly the goal with .42, you still only get migrants of your civ's default race. You can only get citizens of other races through visitor petitions. There is an exception in the case of a monarch of another race, but that's always been the case. At least they can properly settle in your fort now.

This is my crew.

>still no explanation for why this is happening.
That, in my opinion is one of the biggest problems in adventure mode. It's so very difficult/impossible to tell why in the world people are or are not fighting each other, and you can't really talk to them about it. You certainly can't ask what's going on and the most they ever say is saying that they hate someone or that they're upset about someone dying, often that someone being whomever they just killed. I wish Toady would add a "please explain your actions" dialog option or something. As it is, it's like our adventurers are autistic or something, having only the vaguest understanding of other people, similar to that of wildlife.

They're just bigger, better Dralthas in every way. Have you never opened up the 3rd cavern layer or something? They're fairly common.

>Have you never opened up the 3rd cavern layer or something?
Yeah. I've actually never breached the caverns at all aside from one time when I was checking out a disconnected section bug in a worldgen fort. All the rest of my experience with caverns is in adventure mode. I started playing in .38c/.40d so I got in the habit of thinking that I can't dig more than 15 levels down. The times that I've consciously tried to dig down to them I've been too careful about it and never reached them before I stop playing on that fort for whatever reason (usually version change, I play slowly). I'm hoping to breach the caverns soon in my current fort, but I'm not really sure how close I am.

Talk to them > express emotions > change menu > talk to them.
>>
>>167796925
Wait a second, is all this stuff actually possible?
>>
>>168011042
Express emotions just provokes them to say something random like "I have awoken to the nuances of friendship" or a rumor about a megabeast. There's no way to ask them "Why are you killing that guy?" or even "Where are you going?". You can ask why they're travelling, but half the time they just say "I'm on an important mission" and won't tell you anything beyond that, like who gave them the mission, where the mission will take them etc. I don't think you can ask about group membership either, except for whether or not they're part of the local government, indirectly. You can ask if they like the local government or not, but the answer doesn't seem to be connected to anything other than always being positive if they're a member, but it's often also positive if they're a criminal. So you just have to guess as to why anyone's doing or not doing anything, which seems to currently be governed by a few fairly simple variables, but we have no means of measuring the value of those variables.

well guys, work is tough but I am slowly progressing

There are a couple new races, one of them intelligent, and the others live in the caverns, substituteting animal tribes

Now we have computers for anons, they are quite expensive to make and need energy to work, just to make you suffer
They let anons shitpost, which gives them a happyness bonus, and depending the board, I'd like them to be able to do different things on it, for example, if /int/ existed, shitposting would be replaced with banter, and the user could get btfo by other hipothetical users while on the computer, probably ending in suicide, etc.
Using a computer to shitpost has a little chance of making a mod appear, ban/permaban you, and dissapear. If multiple computers are set near, the mod might ban a fellow anon for your crimes, just like in real life
With computers you are supposed to be able to browse other boards and produce OC, which is the main buff used by anons in combat, cumulative and powerful

Im having a little trouble setting these different abilites for different castes, so If multiple castes live in your fort, I might set a way for you to convert them all to the same caste, or, have different 'computers' with different reactions on them
If anyone has advice on setting different buildings and reactions usable for different castes, you would solve my main trouble with this mod, and everything would flow perfectly

Computers are made with one iron, one glass, one copper and two plastic btw
In my head, in every anon's flat there would be a bed, a computer(includes desk), a toilet, and a chair

Im giving thoughts to making /dfg/ a separte civ, but I dunno if that's a good idea either

Those are the only problems for now, going strong and acepting ideas

Its not about the ammount of degeneracy, its about the flavour of it
Right now the mod consists about self-deprecating humor (The way the mod treates humans and anons)
Sexual mechanics that are hilarious and disturbing (we talked about nipple stabbing before)
And hidden and not so hidden references to /dfg/, 4chan and DF culture as a whole (for example, shitposting on /vg/ in the game might spawn a dumb, cubic like nasty creature next to you called a 'square tileset user' that dies in the matter of seconds because existence doesnt like it)

Adding that kind of racist stuff changes the tone of humor of the game, and people might not like that

Tell you what, that'll more than probably come on the
D(ark) Fortressâ„¢ free expansion pack
That way people can play it if they want to or never even think of it

The mod doesn't exist. Until it does, he's just a tripfag posting about memes and fetishes. Last thread he posted in there was a stretch of a couple hundred posts where the discussion was primarily about chads and stacies and traps and lolis and how to hit a dude with titties, etc. It's off topic and derails the thread.

Contrast with the guy doing the demon mod. He's not tripping, he posting screenshots of his tests and the interactions to achieve desired results, he's not soliciting off-topic discussion, and the few posts that have been about the thing he's basing his mod on (instead of the mod itself) have been prompted by other people (apparently).

Nightbowling/drilling holes in your walls/kicking the shit out of the radiator etc. between 10pm-6am are very popular hobbies in apartment buildings and the biggest repercussion is usually an angry note or something similar, rarely you will get stabbed hundreds of times and your body sliced up to small pieces and dumped at the nearest swamp/lake/other damp place.

>>168049819
If you call the police and tell them that someone is banging on the radiator a few apartments up they will tell you to fuck off and send you a bill for the trouble afterwards.
You have to take matters into your own hands.

Unfortunately no, but night-noises are a big topic in Finland since we have a lot of old apartment buildings.
Especially in the tabloids.
I remember reading about a huge brouhaha surrounding a man taking huge shits late at night since his neighbours complained his turds splashing into the toilet bowl were like depth charges.
Not much of note happens in Finland.
>>
>>168049529
There has to be at least a few dozen finns who play df, didnt Toady have an interview with one Finnish site
>>
>>168052028
Well, you see
>>
Yo, I kinda think the current version (40.1 - now) of the game is a little too dull, in terms of fun shit happening. From what I've seen it's mostly because the goofy shit you hear about the old versions like tantrums always being on a hairtrigger and animals being much more of a threat than not at all has since been fixed, which means the game is a lot less challenging since all you need to do to steamroll it is have your 3x3 farm and brewery on repeat and have a single squad training all the time. I don't think I've ever seen a dwarf trantrum/go insane outside of failed moods despite actively trying my damndest to make it happen, so I figure it might be a good idea to try a version where that stuff is a lot more commonplace.

The problem I come to you guys with is choice. I have no idea which version of the game would be most suitable for maximizing the goofy shit that happens, but I don't want to go through hundreds of hours of forts trying out every legacy version of the game only to find that oh, sieges are broken in that version and simply don't happen or something like that, you know?

So what version do you guys think I should go for? My first thought was that Boatmurdered was of course in the 2d version of the game, and lots of crazy shit happened there so that should be obvious choice, right? But looking at it, it seems incredibly bare-bones compared to later versions, but later version than that all I hear about is the bugs that cripple parts of the game to some degree. Is there perhaps a handy guide, in image form or not, for referral on what version suffers from what bugs/features and the like?

Well unless they live in the poorest neighborhood of some of the slightly bigger cities, then Finland is probably the least violent place to live on earth where there are still shops and other people etc.
But if they want to live some sort metropolitan life then they will be sorely disappointed.
You should tell them to make the most of the every man's rights in Finland.

Toady makes DF with a non-square tileset in mind, thus using a square one is fundamentally against the creator's vision.
Do you wish to see as Toady designs or do you wish to pollute your eyes with square speckles of poo on your screen?
It is my opinion that visual representation is a large part of a video game and I will follow Toady's vision as he has not strayed from the true path towards a great game, in my opinion.

But >>168073927 just talks about the developer's vision, which I couldn't care less about. Developer's may have a vision for their game, and it can be a good one, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon in some way. For example, STALKER: CS is a fairly decent game, but the Factions mod improved it while straying from the developer's vision.
