Just a warning, once you do find Siegmeyer in Blighttown, the next section of his quest becomes EXTREMELY tricky, since there are three ways it could end. Every time I want to make a new build, I remember how much effort it is, and how I'll always be at a disadvantage numbers wise unless I go to NG++ for the max rings. So then I just go back and play my main.

How do you guys find the patience to make an entirely new character? Is it just the inspiration, or desire to play at a different SL range? I've been kind of wanting to play a low level invader, but not sure what would be fun to play.

Its scaling is Aint/Cfth (actual scaling for dark is more like C/C, the A is for magic only). For comparison, Caitha's and Sunless have Aint/Afth scaling. Caitha/Sunless aren't much better though, because they have the opposite problem where all miracles are secretly really weak but the chimes and talismans are really strong to make up for it, which is what allows miracle buffs to be retardedly stronger than sorcery ones.

If you want the hardest run I've ever done, try pure dark magus. Hit Cathedral of the Deep ASAP, make Deep Soul and buy Gnaw + Deep Protection from Irina right away. Only cast dark spells ever, nothing else. You can fist Dancer for an early Caitha's Chime, but that's it. Only use a melee weapon if you can cast Dark Blade on it or infuse it with Dark. If something resists dark, cast Gnaw and pray you hit. You have to use Dead Again to kill something at least once.

I recommend buying Gnaw first so you have something to kill Eygon with when he takes Irina from you.

Black Serpent only works as a pressure to tool to go in. You do it anywhere midrange and you risk a backstab or a traded hit you might not win. Vestiges is a fireball. You can easily react to it and avoid it every time. A "Pyro" only ever worked with a weapon on the other hand. As far as mages, Pyros don't have the projectile capability (slow as shit) so a Sorceror is easily better at that. All other spells besides the ones listed are just plain bad.

Basically that. Spell school rings boost all spells of their category, including dark. There are only three damaging dark spells per school (ignoring smaller versions of the same spells), and dark catalysts are bad at anything that isn't dark.

You either fill up your remaining slots with dark spells from other schools, meaning you'll want rings and another catalyst for those too, or you equip non-dark spells for suboptimal damage and wonder why you're bothering with dark at all.
