you need to see your health/mana with peripheral vision.
even seeing the silhouette give you vital(lul) information.

skills only need ocassional "referencing" on how long is left on cd or do you have mana for it.

The old design that placed bars above abilities was actually making a beginners mistake by assuming that putting something closer to where people usually have their eyes on is better, which is simply not true, you either put things of importance in the very middle of the UI or you put them on the corners, since it's where it's easier for the eyes to go.
