Demul or nulldc? Is there a clear winner?
>>
Now that I've got Dragon Quest VIII running at a firm 60fps for game logic, I want to see if I can't bump up my actual fps. No clue if it's still going to be largely CPU bound, or if my GPU can actually do something for a change. Cranked up the EE Cyclerate to 2 and honestly didn't notice an improvement, but I also wasn't running my GPU OC since it never helped before

Specs: AMD FX-4200, AMD R9 280 3GB, 8GB 2033mhz DDR3. All overclocked because free performance. 2033 isn't a typo btw

>>167547484
Haven't touched DC emulation in like 6 years, but null was the champion back in the day if that helps any
>>
>>167547484
I believe Demul is more accurate / compatible, while nulldc has better performance.

it was revolutionary for the time, but treat it like you would OoT: respect it and enjoy it for what it did, but don't expect it to change your world

also, very slight spoilers, when you get a job in game, you should probably find something to do while playing. Not sure if the devs decided to emulate the utter displeasure of having to work for the players, or if that's just how it happened. Thank god that doesn't last very long

You know what the emulation scene is to me? Or at least the 4chan emulation scene?

It's Kyle's Cousin Kyle from South Park.

Turns up outta nowhere, at first we figure sure, okay, it's another place to discuss emulation related things, won't be that big of an inconvenience. Then the complaints start. "Oh we don't emulate on modern sysssstems because they don't output at 240p. Pack them away, we need Wii consoles." "Oh we can't use regular screens because there's input lehhhhhg. Can you hook up some heavy CRTs for us?" "Oh that developer is a Jew, so we just shitpost about him and everything he does. Why don't we talk about Squarepusher and RetroArch?" "Oh we can't eat anything with beef in it, it gives us bag gehhhhs. Do you mind if we have fish?" All these little niggling things that compound into major headaches, and it gets to the point where you can't help but feel resentment for it, and you'd rather not see it come back. Then comes the guilt trip. "Oh why do they hate us? They never gave us a chance, they're all a bunch of fucking bigots."

What's the deal with that gba-colors shader? it looks NOTHING like a backlit sp. Afaik only the micro had dull colors, but it's still nothing like that shader makes it to be. And the fact that people blindly accept this as accurate is just sad.
>>
>>167588830
It looks pretty close to an OG GBA. I know because I have one right next to me.

I don't think it's intended to be super accurate though. It's just an approximation of the desaturation that the GBA screen definitely had, and they developers clearly compensated for.

fair enough. #x64dbg has a lot of people like that, people that even now work for AV companies. no doubt some Denuvo employees in there. Rockstar Games even had some job openings advertised that specified experience in x64dbg as a job requirement (i think it was for their anticheat and DRM).

I read in a reddit AMA about a cracker who got busted during Fastlink and stroke a deal with Securom to work for them. Might be a different person though. From what I read Securom got really good around that time - version 5 was a joke, then suddenly they release version 7 (omitting number 6) which was a whole other beast
>>
>>167599215
Anyway, I think these days experience in cracking is seen as a negative thing, unless you're insanely good I suppose. Especially considering the AAA game protection cracking scene is almost dead so most people start clean instead of gaining experience releasing game cracks. Though game protections have always been the toughest targets, second to dongles, but these employ hardware so if you can prove you can do these then you must be really skilled
>>
>>167599696
I know the person that writes ProtectionID did some cracking on Securom and Starforce back in the day..

>Anyway, I think these days experience in cracking is seen as a negative thing, unless you're insanely good I suppose.

Yeah, that's why I tried to get jobs that completely unrelated to programming and things. Though I did some work for a particular DRM doing some compression stuff.

>Especially considering the AAA game protection cracking scene is almost dead so most people start clean instead of gaining experience releasing game cracks.

Yes, I know of that guy as well, he's kind of a dick sometimes (not surprising given how many third world retards visit RE boards asking for tools these days) but he seems to know his stuff. I'd really like to read some sort of an article on the history of game protections with an emphasis on the technical stuff, how they evolved, how complex they are compared to each other (really would like to read a Denuvo vs. Starforce), etc., I know there are docs about SR, SF and Safedisc (none for Tages though) but they're for old versions and probably incomplete. What I really don't like about the game scene is that they kept their knowledge private, except for RLD. Nowadays if you wanted to read about how this stuff works, you won't find anything except ancient shit and you pretty much have to spend months learning and reversing these yourself, no wonder there's no new blood in the scene.
>>
>>167600563
Yeah but when is RLD gonna start cracking Denuvo

I mean sure, their releases are better than pretty much any group, aside from CPY, but I haven't seen them do anything really important like, well, again, CPY.

>>
>>167601532
These days, groups are as good as their crackers and testers are (I assume they have people doing menial work like playing through the game, catching hidden triggers, etc), it's entirely possible RLD's superstar crackers are long retired. The only non-standard protection they cracked recently is Arxan which doesn't seem to be on the same level as Denuvo (even that Voksi guy on cs.rin cracked it and he doesn't seem super skilled to me) and someone even claimed they still left a lot of stuff in Mafia 3 so it wasn't even a clean crack like they claimed, it doesn't even look like the scene has people who bother nuking such releases, this and stolen Skidrow cracks, such a sorry state it's in. Now, CPY's method isn't complete removal either but it's more of a keygen - from what I understand by google translating the russian board and reading the patent, Denuvo executables come with empty spaces for some game constants, the license server sends you those pre-encrypted awith your hardware info in the license file, the loader fills them in and they get decrypted during gameplay. CPY probably wrote some logger for those to grab them unencrypted and discover encryption scheme or key for each such constant (still it requires to play though the game and catch them all) and made the dll that grabs your hardware info, encrypts them, generates the license file and feeds it to the game.

Just focus on two skill trees for each character, most can get by with just a weapon and their personal skill.
Hero can be whatever weapon you want (I chose spears) and his personal
Yangus should be axes and 42 points in fists, maybe enough points in his personal for Heal
Jessica is staves and either whips for Twin Dragon Whatever or Sex Appeal
Angelo is Bows and Staves

I don't mind some of the features. The bar at the right to jump from the beginning to anywhere in the thread. The stats on bottom of the OP is nice too.

BUt it overall looks very bad. It's clearly designed with mobile in mind. So 3/4 of the page is god damn blank, and the actual forum is incredibly narrow. It has that simplified Win10/mobile look that I despise. Looks like it's designed for kids. I half-expect it to start teaching me how to count. Just looks childish.

Is THIS the future we chose? Because I can't stand it.
>>
>>167640207
That would be interesting, but using the libretro API would require that he make his work open source.

Another reason I don't see DraStic making its way to libretro is the mobile version is still payware. If it were ported to libretro, people could simply get the core and load it through RetroArch, completely bypassing the paywall.

Unless DraStic is reverse engineered and ported, or the developer decides to get his head out of his ass, the RetroPi port is likely the only free version to ever be available.
>>
>>167641838
>but using the libretro API would require that he make his work open source.

Nope. libretro is MIT.

And if someone wanted to load a closed source DLL into a GPL process, they would be doing it completely voluntarily, eliminating responsibility from the author of the process, though that gets shady depending on which side of the GPL fence you are and how much of a raging GPL zealot you are too.

Gotta love the FSF and how certain people view the GPL....

I just ran into Death and got my fucking ass beat.
How much grinding do I need to do and where's a better weapon.

Also, why the hell did I never play this game until now, it's fucking great. Are the DS Castlevanias just as good?

Also I'm pissed. I got a lucky Valkyre Soul (which was the only reason I even made it to the second part of Death's fight) but of course I died and lost it, and there's only the one Valkyre in the Clocktower.
I don't even fully remember how I got here, so I can't really just leave.
>>
>>167644949

Death is the hardest boss, and will destroy you if you're not careful. Just learn to avoid.

It's the best handheld Castlemania, so check out the others. The NDS ones are worth checking. Dawn is Aria but bigger, but not as good. Charlotte/jonathan is interesting but I never beat. I liked Order of Ecclessia the most since it felt newer.
>>
>>167645174
Yeah I have absolutely no idea how to avoid some of his attacks. I only have double jump, and his phase 2 scythe is fucking massive.
Partizan is my strongest weapon, the spear, and I also have the poisoned sword, but I like the reach and downward attack the spear has.

But yeah, I got fucking raped outright, I think I need better items. I haven't actually bought anything from Hammer except potions so I'm only using an Iron Plate that dropped, my next best gear is the Ninja Armor I found.
>>
>>167645341
>Yeah I have absolutely no idea how to avoid some of his attacks. I only have double jump, and his phase 2 scythe is fucking massive.

Just look up videos. There's people doing no hit runs. I believe you have to slide for some of them.

Don't feel bad about losing. I got stuck on him too. Then I over leveled and breezed through the rest of the game.
>>
>>167645928
Ah I got a Medusa head.
I can see how this would make the fight a lot easier. The timing you need to dodge the scythe legit is uh, well frankly I'm just not good enough to do that without it taking me a long ass time.

>>
>>167662121
You can easily tell it's non-integer by looking at the pipe's outline and letters on the hud. But yea the scanline effect looks alright
>>
>>167662178
The worst thing with uneven scanlines is when the screen moves vertically and there's shimmering going on, but it doesn't happen at all here. I wonder if that was intentional.
>>
>>167662292
That and the fact that most of the times, while applying a crt shader on a non-integer scaled image you get those nasty uneven scanlines

The letters are actually like that, so that's not an artifact from non-integer scaling. The pipe looks fine.

Yeah, I'm impressed by how easymode handles it. You can mess with the settings and it does a pretty good job on non-integer. You can have it with 0 scanlines and supersharp like pixelate for example.

You are like a little baby. With my mastery over time, I would drop a save state as soon as possible in my life, then live out unlimited lifetimes, amassing a skill and knowledge set that would make me above humanity. Then, I would create the ultimate emulator.
>>
>>167702453
>Then, I would create the ultimate emulator.
Wouldn't you need an emulator to begin with? Since life doesn't support save states, you'd either have to use some kind of cheat module (like the Nakitek SNES Game saver) or an emulator. If you are able to build and program such a cheat module, you wouldn't need to create an emulator then.

so it'll work? I'm honestly not sure why it's not working. I have cheats enabled in PCSX2 and I'm pretty sure I formatted it correctly. Changed the file extention to .pnach and everything, but still no dice. Put it in the PCSX2 cheats folder in my documents and everything
>>
>>167708763
Oh I see. Now that I think about it, I never figured out how to do cheats with PCSX2. Couldn't even find the cheats online, so I had to make them myself by figuring it out in-game, for the game I am playing.

I'm pretty sure you can just add those addresses in Cheat Engine. Those numbers don't look too far off from the addresses I added in Cheat Engine for a diff game.

I guess you'll want to freeze those values and perhaps lower the freeze interval too, so that it's more effective. If the code you're trying to use is changing the game's CPU code, then I can't guarantee it will work in PCSX2 though. Not sure how well their recompiler detects changes in CPU code.
>>
>>167710674
I actually can't run the Cheat Engine. It crashes every time I go to use it, no matter what I do. No clue why, but that's why I was asking someone else to do it. No clue if that would work, since it sounds like the Cheat Engine does a lot more than just converting files into a proper cheat file

Systems are more complex in reality than in nice "theories" so the programming needs to be that complex to serve the end user's needs. Programming like on the right is done to serve the end user and make their life easier, which is why you get paid for it. If it was done to have fun then you wouldn't get paid for it and can make it as 'simple' to code as possible.

What the fuck man? Actraiser 2 is completely balls to the wall unfairly hard.

The very first fucking boss takes half your health each hit and is in the air so impossible to hit unless you jump but if you jump and attack, it's impossible to dodge him moving if he happens to move. Then you have to jump and glide to dodge another move which does a 1/3 of your hp which puts you in danger of running into him and talking half your hp. All the while, you do 1 damage and you can't even use any of your good spells against him.

I don't mind hard games but this game is bullshit. The hitboxes for getting hit aren't even consistent.

What a garbage sequel to Actraiser.

You are forced to do digital input.

You can set up a pretend dual-stick setup by assigning the other half of turning and movement to the face buttons instead of the shoulder buttons. I've found that even though it's not analogue, having that arrangement helps over putting strafing and looking into shoulder buttons.

Or, since you're emulating, just remap whatever to your sticks. It's still digital input but maybe it'll feel a LITTLE more natural if you do that, I don't know.

SC3 works really well, apart from the odd glitch:

DX11 works better than OGL. You also need to turn align sprite and wild arms hacks on to remove vertical lines at more than 2x native and to remove the awful motion blur.

Generally in emulation the more accurate something is the more resources it needs, I'm guessing the PSP emulator is simply more accurate then the PS2 emulator.

Snes9x can be run on a computer with a sub 1ghz cpu, but the more accurate bsnes requires a CPU of at least 3ghz

Yes that is if you're intelligent enough to realize that you should move the facebutton function to other places, which most people don't actually do.
If your tweaked AC control scheme requires you to claw grip then it's shit since there's never enough functions to require that on the PS1 and 2 games so why would you bring that up at all?

Use the wiki. You will need to get the bios, from the wiki. You will need to download the mednafen core. That is in the options under online updater.

understand that devs like ryphecha (and the rets of the mednafen team), byuu and the dolphin devs if the dolphin core actually amounts to anything really really hate the fact that their emulators are more (or could be because it's not like we know download count) popular through retroarch than standalone. not a coincidence that all the devs who have made negative comments over RA have bad blood with the RA team (guess the RA dev in particular that caused this)

the mednafen team in particular really hated the fact that people only went to their forums to ask for help not for their standalone emulator but for the RA cores. they consider the mednafen port of psx a broken sub par port based on old code and get pissed at the fact that people prefer over the ones they make.

byuu really hates the fact that bsnes mercury exist and that people would use it over higan, again he also considers it a broken sub par port based on old code.

so yeah they really are insecure over RA, it does bother them that people use RA over standalone, maybe its because they feel retroarch is stealing their thunder and they are jealous of the fact, maybe it's because of the patreon and the fact that they get money to take their shit and modify it as they please while they do it for free.

if they could stop RA from porting their emulators i'm sure they would, but they can't so they just throw passive aggressive shade on reddit and hope they convince people to drop libretro

This is literally the point of open source though, nobody forced them to make their code open. Everyone is an open source advocate until it stops benefitting them directly apparently.

And of course RetroArch is stealing thunder, any program that does the function of 12 different programs tends to do that, people like convenience.
>>
>>167823147
basically annoyed for lack of a better word with the fact that beetle psx is outdated and has bugs that they've fixed in the newer version. she get annoyed with the fact that the RA unofficial/unsupported/arguably outdated (despite the features it has over regular version) builds of mednafen are usually the one people are talking about

SP also mentions that they had a falling out, they used to get along just fine but now they don't. of course those are just SP's word, for all we know he acted like a cunt like he normally does and alienated ryphecha. we don't really know what caused it, only that mednafen doesn't really care about supporting libretro anymore despite being interested in the idea before

Is setting 500 500 TC offset the only way to fix the minimap in Persona 3? That works, but causes issues with portrait animations. Which can be fixed by double tapping F9 in the dorms or a few other locations, but this will in turn glitch some other stuff, like the moon in some cutscenes, or the background during battle cut-in comments. Those can be fixed once again by double tapping F9, but then the portraits will revert to being glitched... Without the offset it appears that neither of these issues happen, so it seems like I'm forced to choose between glitched minimap, glitched portraits, or other random stuff being glitched.

so I lost my save files for pretty much every ps2 game I was playing and I had just started dds2. my save file from 1 was half complete with some of the optional bosses cleared but not demifiend.
it feels kind of like cheating but there's a save file
https://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/920605-shin-megami-tensei-digital-devil-saga/saves
with everything but can those even be used on an emulator? if not does anyone have a save they could help me out with?
>>
>>167876285
Yes, you need to use mymc to edit the memory card file.

His hour long half-monologue about superiority of Japanese video game industry is normal thing on #retroarch... I guess he also finds time to play games he talks about...

Sell-out.

22:47 <@Twinaphex> I lost a bit of respect for Carmack too
22:47 <@Twinaphex> for selling himself out to Facebook like that
22:47 <@Twinaphex> and for working with that guy Palmer Luckey

so I found some backups for some saves I lost ages ago but I'm getting
(pxActionEvent) Savestate uses an unknown savestate version.
(PCSX2 ver=9a0b0000, state ver=9a0a0000)(VM_UnzipFromDisk)

as errors

now if I read right, the savestates don't work between some versions of the emulator so is there a way to find which version of the emulator it was so I can just load that up and save everything onto a memory card?

alternatively am I just fucked.
>>
>>167882759
Were you likely to have been using a stable?
>>
>>167882961
from what I remember yes, but it's been a few years considering the files were created in 2014/15. I'm looking to see if I have one of the pcsx installers from then on my computer somewhere
>>
>>167883095
It could be the 1.2.1 stable then.
>>
>>167883140
worth a shot, looking for it now
>>
>>167883140
>>167883314
Some of the files seem to be loading but i cant get any controls to work to look around and make sure everything is as it should be. more progress than I've had in a few years though so thanks anon.
>>
>>167884296
Well, you'll have to bind your controls.
Make a real in game save and then you can go back to using a newer version.
>>
>>167884640
thats what I'm saying, it's not letting me bind them so I'm probably just doing something stupid wrong.
>>
Why does MAME speed up stuff? It has always been like this, too. I mean like... dialogue before a fight on fighting games and stuff like that. It's as if it recognizes that this isn't actual gameplay so it speed it up.

How anyone can enjoy this grindfest for more than an hour is beyond me
>>
>>167888960
So many cool mechanics to lose yourself into.Like the concept of the item world alone beats most roguelikes, everythings has near limitless replayability, it's insane.
>>
>>167888960
It's not even a grindfest until you've beaten the game. And even then it doesn't take long to reach 9999.
>>
What the hell is iNES mapper 190? It's not listed on the NESdev wiki.
>>
>>167889245
I prefer grindfest roguelikes, like PCB, Elona and *bands in general

I tried playing Disgaea but it didn't catch me
>>
>>167890239
Probably unassigned. Nintedulator, Nestopia, FCEUX, Mesen and punes don't emulate it.
>>
>>167890638
Mednafen apparently does now.

byuu refuses to allow higan to display without integer scale, so you can fill your screen while using a scaling shader.

I'll take one when I find a game that does it, then. It's fairly common but I can't remember any specific one right now.
>>
I don't understand integer scaling. I mean, I get it only does it on x1,x2,x3 and so on, rather than x3.7, but how does that mess the aspect ratio up (which I believe is the problem with it)? You augment 300x600 by 3.7, you're maintaining the relation between both numbers at the same level of augmenting by 3, so why would this create duplicate pixels and such?
>>
This is amusing.

70% of the pixels will be 4 pixels, the other 30% will be 3 pixels.

Why the absolute FUCK does MAME on RA move the player 2 with DFGR instead of the inputs I've selected as following: http://pastebin.com/F9jZVJYN ? I even search for "d" and it isn't even listed as in input key!! Where the fuck are these keys coming from...

Trying to play Metroid Prime. Can't figure out how to hide Samus's arm or get the VIve controllers to work. Neither are in the guide, because it doesn't go into specifics for each game.

Would appreciate spoonfeeding.
>>
>>167898558
Because MAME has it's own keyboard mappings. Toggle Game Focus mode on with scroll lock to block RA's keyboard input and use the internal MAME UI to set controls.
