Why do special moves in fighting games require complex button combinations?
I recently started playing Guilty Gear, and it's made me frustrated for this reason.
I still intend to practice and get the combos down, but I can't help but ask why such a thing is necessary.
Each character has a unique arsenal of special moves, but how is the game improved by locking those abilities behind difficult timing challenges? Surely this artificially raises the skill requirement, and has you practicing the same moves over and over, rather than being able to focus on practicing strategy.
My main competitive game is Overwatch, and I just can't imagine the frustration if I had to worry about failing to activate my abilities, on top of having to worry about using them correctly.
It just seems so unnecessary, why does this happen from a design standpoint? What does it add to the game? What do you think about it? Would these games be better/more popular without this sort of design?

Soul Calibur died because they slowed the gameplay way down, may as well have removed ringouts with how unlikely they had become, introduced damn near unplayable online, upped the tits to unlikeable levels (as well as made all the girls ugly, especially Ivy), and because the only gameplay difference casuals noticed was the introduction of that instant kill non-sense.

I honestly don't care what ANY of you Reddit fags say. Street Fighter V is currently the best fighting game ever made. The things it does right, are amazing. And the flaws, like netcode, censorship, and lack of features at launch, cannot be excused. However if you play only with people who have 5 bars, your matches should be flawless. Mine always are.

This game is going to become godlike whenever it gets the massive E3 update they're talking about. The only thing that could possibly ruin this game is if the new season 2 characters are cheesy poorly designed pandering trash like Rashid.

Thus A big part of Dva's game paly is deciding which part of the mech cycle she is on, her confidence in being able to progress through it at the right moments or deciding to stick in one to make the most of the benefits for a period when a scenario in matchup calls for it.

It partly depends on the game. Switching characters makes you more familiar with everyone's tools and their weaknesses (because let's be honest: you're probably losing a lot). The flipside is that you never get really in-depth knowledge of any one characters and all the match-ups.

This matters less in games where match-ups are super specific. Like if you're skating through characters in SFV you might not miss much, but if you do it in Guilty Gear you'll never get that "I'm just gonna improvise now" expertise.

I like having multiple characters, but I try not to get character-ADD too often. If you do it too much it just seems like you're giving up as soon as you hit a road block. I especially like having a braindead character and a more nuanced/technical character in my pocket.

But they are very different in Tekken, the point I'm making is that the game encourages you to switch a lot and it feels natural. The concept of stances is so rooted in the game that there really is no "stance character", and this is something I really appreciate in the series. Lars is pretty much the Ryu-ish well-rounded beginner character and he has two stances aside from regular. Of course there's characters with heavier stance use such as Zafina, Ling and the ultimate fighting game stance master Lei Wulong, for those who really enjoy them (and are up to the challenge)
