I honestly don't think there's an enemy in DCSS that scares the fuck out of me more than orbs of fire.

Hunger cobs were pretty awesome.
Also suppression moths.
>>
>>167531334
Orbs of fire are legit nothing compared to ancient liches, I've never been as threatened by OoFs but I've been nearly destroyed by ancient liches multiple times because they can summon tormenters and hellfire mobs AND also do a shit ton of damage on top of that.
>>
>>167533028

>>
Why does corrosion, torment and hellfire exist? How is reducing all the efforts of the player to build up good defenses worthless a good design decision?
>>
>>167533405
Because you can easily defend against that.
>>
>>167533405
Torment and hellfire are only really a thing in post 3-rune games, and any character beyond that point is pretty much impervious to normal damage so you basically have to have attacks that ignore that defence.

Extended is already 90% shit mobs 10% managing torment/hellfire, removing them would make it more of a cakewalk than it is already is.
>>
>>167533676
>muh line of sight
if you were supposed to killhole, lure, or stairdance, they wouldn't go so far out of their way to discourage those maneuvers.
>>

Um, what? Lichform + Yara = immune to torment and can undo corrosion easily. If you take Gozag and use AoE spells you stop caring about hellfire too.

You might as well just play godless/Xom for all your games then, since all gods offer some type of advantage in one way or another that allow you to do things that you would not be able to with a godless char.

>>
>>167534958
a crutch is a thing that helps bad players but harms good players (nobody with two working legs wants to carry that bullshit around), like auto skill training

the word you are looking for is "strong" or maybe "OP", not "crutch"

>>
>>167535225
Makhleb/TSO can easily be worshipped all the way throughout the game, TSO's advantages just show better in extended and really the choosing/switching to him is not any different form choosing Trog, he just confers a massive advantage that increases your chance of winning the game, which is presumably what you're playing to do.
>>
>>167535527
all the cars have at least 1 thing wrong, usually either wheels, engine, or electrical system
maybe the explanation is that the survivors fleeing before you already took all the working ones
but then why are the grocery stores full of food

Two ways:
1) Get Curses support (i.e. when you run ./configure and whatever other options, make sure you have Curses supported and figure out what goes wrong). Arch users will probably want to install ncurses5-compat-libs from the AUR, for instance. This is by far the easiest way, but **you don't get extra terminals**. If you know how to set your terminal's font, then you're done.

2) X11.

You'd want to install some form of xorg-xlsfonts for your system if it's not already there. If your system is smart, it should link your existing fonts to equivalent XLFD versions.

Then, run xlsfonts to see if it's populated with fonts. If it is, then run xlsfonts | grep "[name of font you want]". For instance:

* xlsfonts | grep "ubuntu mono"
* xlsfonts | grep "consolas"

And so on.

You can learn the font name elements here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_Logical_Font_Description

But in a nutshell:
* Pick the fonts that end in "iso10646-1". You can just add another pipe to the above commands and do xlsfonts | grep "consolas" | grep "iso10646-1".

* Bold and medium correspond to bold and regular/unbolded text. If you want it to look like >>167527656's, use bold.

* "i" is for italicized, so use "r", for Roman.

* The first two numbers (usually 0s) that you see correspond to ways to set the font size. The first is by pixels: setting pixel size to 20 makes it 20 pixels high. The second is by tenths of a point size: setting point size to 150 makes it a 15 point font. **ALSO**, if it's not clear, you should just use one of these (probably the point size option). The other font option can be kept at 0, along with anything else in the line that's at 0.

So for instance:
-misc-inconsolata-bold-r-normal--0-180-0-0-m-0-iso10646-1
for Inconsolata 18pt.

After that, you'd want to set that ANGBAND_X11_FONT in your environment (or whenever you run PCB).

I find that Angband font rendering on X11 tends to look like ass no matter what, but bigger font sizes look better.

Last time I checked the only relevant uses of Dex for a spriggan is stabbing damage and EV. That SH """bonus""" from Dex on bucklers is non-existent. Their stealth is already always maxed with just a few stealth points even below 20 Dex. Why would you need more EV when both the spriggan aptitude for Dodging and EV bonus due to being small are already very high? Why would you need more stabbing damage anyway when it's already too high, is that an over the top preparation for postend hell/panlords or what? At any rate I really think more powerful spells/hexes do way better and have way higher utility in any part of the game than mere dodging and stab damage can ever achieve.

demon is intensely fun and replayable at first, but once you've played several variations of all of the viable builds and fucked around with tedious unviable or goofy builds, every game pretty much plays the same
it's similar to DCSS actually in the different phases of play (honeymoon phase were you don't know shit but have the time of your life, playing a cookiecutter build for your first win, doing goofy shit/exotic builds, and then finally winscumming/scorewhoring). the main difference is that Demon has actually fun engaging combat instead of spamming tab or magic macros; also DCSS is actually more replayable because of the wide variety of vaults/layouts/branches/environments, length of the game, ID minigame, and the relatively large, competitive community with detailed game statistics and morgue files available to beat off to
demon environments are pretty fucking bland and untacticool (no shallow/deep water, flammable forests, diggable/beam reflecting/transparent/door walls, traps (actually does DCSS even have traps any more? I miss shadow traps, literally made me shit myself while clenching my anus hard each time I stepped on one), etc.), there's no ID minigame to inject artificial replayability, and a lack of significant milestones that make you feel like you're progressing in a big way. also no ASCII so it's not really a real roguelike

What the... think I just found a weird glitch. Went into the town hall in Telmora, accepted the vault quest, pressed escape to leave and now I'm here? Is this a known glitch?
>>
>>167620469
Your HP is determined by a bunch of things:
there's are multipliers from class, race, and personality, there's a multiplier from your CON score, and last of all there's your "life rating". So if you changed to a high-HP race like half-titan, or you gained points in con, your max HP may have gone up even as your life rating went down.

Confusingly, the hp multipliers from class/race/personality are ALSO called life rating, but they aren't taken into account for the number you get from !selfknowledge. A mighty half-titan-berserker and a shrewd specter sorcerer will both see a number averaging 100 there, even though the former probably has more than double the hp.
>>
>>167621071
Thanks for that, but what does 115/100 actually mean?
>>
>>167617526
At this point, I'm desperate to save everything and anything from removal; I've learned that they use past removals to justify the removal of yet more things, and at the current rate I'm worried they'll remove Charms entirely and replace it with an EXP-tax and the ability to activate [buffs] every n EXP.

Lost a promising character due to obvious faulting, but was getting kind of bored of it anyway. I've gotten two chars to decently high in PCB (balrog warrior and this boilerplate tonberry monk) and every encounter seems to become kind of the same. Quaff speed, earthquake/forest to break los for breaths/etc., maybe cast stoneskin or resists, hit mob until it dies or I get low enough to have to tele and drink a full shelf of CCW. I'm probably a baddie and missing something that would make things more interesting.

Are psions good? That seems pretty different. Steel dragons were also kind of tempting; similar gameplay but somewhat unique equipment slots.

PCB gameplay can get boring when you're not making progress - it feels much slower than DCSS because you can repeat levels and not be pressured to go deeper. But deeper levels means better loot and more experience, and those are what you're after in PCB. If fighting stronger stuff for better stuff repeatedly doesn't interest you (it takes a special kind of autist), then just put the game down and come back some other time.

Psions are great in the endgame, but before psistorm you have to compromise - do you want early convenience for a slightly weaker endgame character, or do you want what amounts to a perfect superhuman but with a painful and difficult and discouraging earlygame? Steel dragons are powerful, much easier, but they're not really a newbie race because of the ring slots.

Wait no, I'm sure, they removed it so they could have an excuse to completely remove charms since there'll be hardly any charms spells left.
>>
>>167647128

That isn't a fix, that would just be redundant to that unrandart amulet
>>
>>167648646
I don't think unrandarts should be considered when designing other parts of the game. That seems like a good penalty to me, and if it makes it too much like the amulet, then I think they should change the amulet.
>>
>>167643814
Can't you !newlife to reroll your psi powers?
>>
>>167648737

Not to mention that it's already redundant to Deflect Missiles. It makes one wonder how it managed to stay in the game for so long.
>>
>>167648987
The spell repel missiles is redundant to the spell deflect missiles? I don't think so. That's like saying that the spell firestorm is redundant to the spell fireball; it's just a more powerful version to keep up with the power progression.
>>
>>167649228

Fireball is way different from Firestorm. Firestorm is smite targeted, has bigger AOE, has irresistible damage, has a chance of expanding 1 tile larger and spawns fire vortices. There isn't anything remotely similar between them except that they deal fire damage.
>>
>>167649387
Fireball and Firstorm are very similar. Both do the majority of their damage in 1-shot, on the turn they are cast(as opposed to poison/freezing cloud/tornado) both are limited AoE centered around the point of the blast(as opposed to glaciate/shatter), and both reduced effectiveness against fire resistant targets.

Firestorm does have a lot of perks that elevate it above fireball, even if they did do similar damage, but I don't think people would spend the XP on firestorm if had the perks of smite/vortices/lingering clouds/partially irresistable damage only. I think they _would_ spend the extra XP if it had the huge AoE and the greatly increased damage only, though. And a firestorm that just had the increased AoE and damage would very clearly be a buffed up fireball. So, I think they are very comparable. More comparable than freezing cloud is to glaciate, or chain lightning is to tornado, or LCS is to shatter.
>>
>>167650064

It is as similar to saying a +0 scimitar of flaming is the same as a flame tongue; they aren't, it's silly.
>>
>>167650064

>freezing cloud is to glaciate, or chain lightning is to tornado, or LCS is to shatter.

how are you even real if your brain isn't real
>>
>>167648931
wizmode it
>>
>>167648987
make deflect missiles cause all of your projectiles/ranged anything (from any source (including non-beam AoEs like fireball/storm)) to fly in a random direction
if that's too "nethacky" then have it massively reduce the damage of the ranged attack
also make you move slower because the vortex of wind around you is fucking up your movement, so that it wouldn't be a nobrainer for speedrunning/rune stealing
also make it cause double irresistible torment/dispel undead so that it wouldn't be a no brainer for standing your ground against a bunch of enemies
>>
>>167650745
the similarities are:
>ranged
>cannot miss
>limited AoE equally distributed around a center point
>majority of damage is on turn of casting
>do primarily fire damage

scimitar of flaming vs flame toungue is a much larger gap.
>flame tongue is ranged, scimitar of flaming is not
There are other differences, but this is the most significant difference. The gap between beam and smite targeting is large, but not as large as the gap between beam targeting and melee.

Even if we don't agree on this point, there's still the sandblast-stone arrow-iron shot-LCS progression. If the repel missiles-deflect missiles progression is redundant, then is that progression redundant?

I would agree that you are clearly just increasing spell damage (some minor changes is spell ranges) to keep up with the power game. However, if you decide that this is unacceptable, then what are your options? Remove low level earth/conj? Remove high level earth/conj? Remove the game mechanic of power progression?
>>
>>167651353
I would say make deflect missiles also deflect zaps from:
>wand of heal wounds
>wand of hasting
>wand of invisibility
>wand of teleportation
>>
>>167651635
Make it deflect all casting buffs too. Your buff runs out, you can't recast until deflect runs out.
>>
>>167653339
>>167651635
I think that's a little problematic with the consistency of some things being treated as projectiles, and therefore checking EV/SH, and some being treated as hexes/magical effects, therefore checking MR
>>
>>167651530

Ranged, AOE and cannot miss are all common elements of not only conjuration but damage spells in general. They are all common elements that cannot be helped like how they all require mana and 10 aut to use.

So in the end the only similarity they have is that they both deal fire damage. Like what I've said earlier, claiming that fireball and firestorm are the same while taking all what I've previously said into account is similar to saying that a +0 scimitar of flaming is the same as a flaming tongue; they aren't.

>sandblast-stone arrow-iron shot-LCS progression

You're wrong about sandblast. Sandblast requiring ammo is the biggest factor forcing Stone Arrow to be a necessary spell to exist or else EE would be very tedious to unplayable. You can't just force a midgame-postend spell Iron Shot to be in the starting spellbook now can you? Iron Shot fulfills the role of a midgame spell that is cheap and great all around for any spellcaster to pick up/branch to (just like Deflect Missiles) while LCS is just the EE focused spell that has a nice drawback of requiring the caster to be almost beside the target.

These are all quirks and traits that Repel Missile <--> Deflect Missile progression doesn't have. They do the same, they don't even need to be recast that often so their mana differences are scrapped and they don't even have the tactical decision of choosing between them when you can already cast both.
>>
Is it just me or are damage spells just immune to the problem of redundancy? There are currently 6 types of bolt spells if you weren't aware, I'm sure that is already saying much.
>>
>>167653979
AoE, cannot miss, ranged, and majority of damage in turn of casting are common characteristics, but the combination of them is not common. Not very many spells have all 4 of those.
The spells that have those characteristics are:
>fireball
>firestorm
>glaciate (a little different, because area is not distributed equally around a center point, and there is damage falloff with increased distance)
>lee's rapid deconstruction (a little different, because can only be aimed at appropriate 'brittle' objects)
>yara's violent unvraveling ( a little different, because can only be aimed at appropriate targets)

So in fact most conjurations or damage magic is ruled out. Fire magic is recognized in DCSS as the most 'blasty' magic because it has the most blasting, the most lobbed fiery explosions that can't be dodged. The similarities between fireball and firestorm are very strong, much stronger than the fire damage.

And ok, let's narrow it down to just stone arrow -> iron shot progression then. Both behave similarly, one just has higher damage numbers. For most EE, a progression from stone arrow to iron shot is anticipated. Does that mean that one of the spells is redundant?

Been trying out City of the Damned recently and it's loads of fun. Sense Good/Evil were really good additions, and the new Military faction is also cool. Humans are OP now, though.
>soldiers/military have the only ranged weapons in the game, which come with infinite ammo and take off 1d2 HP per unit for every turn an enemy is in sight, in a game where Arch-Demons/Angels have 40 HP and only deal ~10 damage per hit in melee and lesser beings have a max of 16 HP and deal up to ~7 damage in melee
>Satanists unbless all blessed humans within sight for free while simultaneously cursing Angels, and can summon demons, and don't even give power to Angels for killing them
>Chaplains can dispel your guise from a distance, in a game where no one else can do that

Currently playing Collaterals Souls; a game with no loot, but "perks," upon level up. It's generally fun, but it gets annoying when you move one square and three melee monsters with a billion health (or else that perk that means they only get hit 25% of the time) realize you exist. Especially since those guys start appearing on every floor after the first.
>>
>>167686524
Alright, some general knowledge I have for starting your DC:SS character:
1. Wait until you're several levels down, then start random-reading your un-id'd scrolls first BEFORE you quaff un-id'd pots, starting with the scroll stack you have the most of- it's good odds that stack is the identify scroll for your game (or the tele scroll, or the remove curse scroll.) Random use of consumables to I.D. them is an inevitable necessity in DC:SS when you start, but potions are generally more valuable than scrolls, and if you get the identify scrolls found you can use them for all your potion identifying. I don't consider it a waste to use them this way; it's far better than using up a might or invis potion that you could've used in a pinch when you found yourself cornered by Sigmund or Urug or some crap you weren't prepared for.
2. If melee, immediately drop training for all skills except (your chosen weapon type) or (your chosen weapon type + Fighting) when you start. If a mage, do the same for either Spellcasting or Spellcasting + (your chosen spell school.) Keep 'em there until min. delay or single-digit spell failure AND zero spell hunger for at least your level 1 spell, preferably your level 2 or 3 ones if you have the patience for it.
3. Vehumet is good for Conjurations, but little else; consider Sif Muna if you absolutely insist on having a spellgod for your religion. Gozag is a fantastic choice for Spriggans and Mummies in general; Dithmenos is pretty much built for stabbers and nothing else, same with Kiku for necromancers; Okawaru gives a wider variety of gifts than Trog, and doesn't even prohibit your spellcasting to get them (though frankly, Heroism doesn't seem quite as powerful as Berserk from what I've seen... but then again, it doesn't leave you slowed when it expires, either, so meh.) Qazlal's a fun choice with excellent benefits, but the increased noise you passively generate will screw you over notably unless you are prepared to manage it.
>>
>>167688321
Woah, thanks a lot, especially on the spellcaster tips. I generally like more to play spellcasters in roguelikes because they start off very weak but become absolute rape machines in the end of most games. My first and only nh ascenscion was a human wizard.
>>
>second time in a row where I've had a Pandemonium entrance in Orc

>>
>>167688321
Why is gozag good for mummies?
>>
>>167691163
Not the other guy, but: all the benefits of Gozag, without any worry about the lack of corpses.

>>167688321
>(though frankly, Heroism doesn't seem quite as powerful as Berserk from what I've seen... but then again, it doesn't leave you slowed when it expires, either, so meh.)

Heroism lasts *much* longer than Berserk with even low levels of Invocation skill (and also doesn't require you to fight every turn). You can also do things like read scrolls and switch weapons under Heroism (for instance, to a ranged weapon and then back to a melee), which you can't do when Berserked.

Another small benefit is the +5 skill to Stealth, which can be oddly useful if your armor's encumberance isn't massive and if you already have a semi-stealth setup. Also useful is the +5 to Armour and Shield, which boost your AC and SH -- Berserk is full-offense, which when combined with its quick runtime, isn't always the best.

IMO, Heroism still has use even in Zot, whereas Berserk is actually really dangerous against Zot-level enemies/groups.
>>
>>167688080
More on this: there are a bunch of different starts, a start being a particular perk that your character begins with that affects your whole game and in my opinion the Scholar start is both the most powerful. and the most fun.

Scholars get to pick two perks per level up as opposed to the one that most players get, but to balance this they get 0 stat growth; whereas all other starts get more HP, more damage, more accuracy as they level, Scholars don't. This is okay because perks are very powerful.

For example: there's a chain that goes Armoured->Radiant Armour->Solar Armor->Phoenix Armour and by Phoenix Armor you have 49% damage reduction, a larger field of vision, and a passive aura that deals 1 damage per turn to everyone within your field of light. It also propagates any on-hit effects you might have.

Combine this with the Pact Pistol line of perks, and you literally cannot take melee damage; you automatically teleport away whenever an enemy moves into melee range. You might worry about ranged enemies since you only have 30 HP, but there are other perks that reduce incoming damage to a fraction of what it could have been; notably Initiative and the Stone Body ritual.

What's more, all of the weapon upgrade lines have radically different powers and uses, so each one plays entirely differently, which gives the game high replayability.

It may be something of a coffeebreak roguelike, but it's definitely fun.

>>
>>167695153
I thought a gimmick was something that professes to be a new mechanic but doesn't actually change anything. Like motion controls.
>>
>>167695679
A supposedly important mechanic that becomes meaningless due to balance issues also turns into a gimmick.
If there are many mechanics in a small game, some of them will necessarily become gimmicks.
>>
>>167695679
I define gimmick as any sort of feature, addition, or change that is intended/advertised as new, game-changing, and very useful and/or interesting, but turns out to be not very useful or interesting.

For example I would say that thumbprint-ID or voice recognition to unlock your smartphone are gimmicks, because they're supposed to be super cool and fun, but become boring and irrelevant after the first couple days of owning the smartphone, but GPS navigation on your smartphone is not a gimmick, because although it may lose it's excitingness, it does not lose it's relevance.

A gimmick is something that seems novel at first but then you realize it's just window dressing for shit game mechanics, like putting lipstick on a pig.

felids getting 3 lives is a gimmick
octopodes wearing only rings is a gimmick
deathswords are a gimmick
i want to say demon's pokemon gimmick is a gimmick but i actually like that game and demon management is fun and interesting
sil smithing is a gimmick because it involves nerfing your entire character and mixmaxing like fuck to maybe get a forge to guarantee decent items when you could just maybe get those items as random drops with an actually good character
halls of mist no-light hallucinations are kinda gimmicky too because they don't really add anything to the game
can't really think of much else at the moment

Today, I learned that, unlike all other Earth Magic, Lehudib's Crystal Spear cannot be resisted by AC. Or anything else.

I had a scroll of silence, but I couldn't use it, because several dragons had me in melee and I didn't trust myself to last reading it because I had blurry vision. And I never found a cure mut pot, anywhere.

I just needed the tele from my wand to proc. I had Haste quaffed and everything.

I had 53 AC on that character, not to mention pretty much every elemental resistance maxed out, across the board. From Fire to Electricity.

AC is more effective against many low-damage attacks than against single high-damage attacks, though. against shit like LCS, EV is much better. which is why you should have a good balance of both instead of going all-out on one

Played a bunch of different Collateral Soul builds, and I've learned that I hate all the gun types except Shotgun and Pact Pistol.

There are four gun types; the aforementioned two, Sniper Rifle, and "Assult (sic) Rifle," and they all have unique specialties. There's also a base gun but it doesn't do anything special.

The Shotgun specializes in AoE and damage; it hits enemies that are immediately adjacent to your target, ignores cover, has a short range and does loads of damage. It has two mutually exclusive upgrades; tentacles, which give HP-for-damage (not much, but still significant considering that HP doesn't regenerate except on entering a new floor), and the other one, which increases the AoE of the hit-adjacent-enemies feature, decreases the amount of time it takes for the gun to fire, and also makes armor increase the damage dealt instead of decrease it.

The Pact Pistol ignores armor and cover, has a middling range, and has enough non-mutually-exclusive upgrades that are really great that I'm not going to list them all. It is overall the best gun type, mostly due to the synergy is has with other perks.

The Sniper Rifle is garbage, pure and simple. It specializes in long-range; this occurs never, since almost every map is a maze and the darkness mechanic prevents you from seeing clearly even when the map is favorable. It's also worse than the basic gun at close-range, to the point of uselessness. It has two mutually exclusive upgrades and both are terrible; one allows you to skip a turn to deal more damage when you finally fire; provided you have a target in your sights. The other allows you to do scratch damage on every enemy between you and your target.

Finally, the "Assult Rifle." It shoots 3 times instead of once, but only the first one deals full damage; the other two deal a max of one. If the extra shots miss they're rerolled to hit a closer enemy. The upgrades aren't worth mentioning. The gun isn't bad, it's just not a Pact Pistol or Shotgun.
>>
>>167721798
That seems really fun, and also way better than most level 7 spells.

Thinking of switching over to 'Ston Sup', as you guys make it sound. I figure since it's most of what gets posted here, it has to be fairly good. Thing is, though, even though you say it's the most fun with the most content, I like my interfaces clean and my information upfront. So just so I know what I'm getting into, would you say that DCSS is the kind of roguelike where you need to pour over spoilers to understand what's going on, or does the game do a good job of telling you stuff in the game/docs?

That is, what should a newcomer expect from it?

No, the examine function is pretty good, and the pastebin should give a short and effective explanation of what the skills do. That said, if you want to minmax you'll have to codedive; their damage calculations are so retarded that they refuse to show them in-game. Also, everything (literally [figuratively] everything except enemy HP) works off of 1d(number), so it can be very swingy.
>>
>>167723307
For enemies, ctrl+x+! is generally all you really need, but you might want to ask or look up uniques or really dangerous stuff.
For player stuff, like damage formula, it's a lot more obtuse with codediving if you want perfect info. it also depends which version you're playing, the newer versions are a lot more informative, roughly telling you the magic resistance of creatures and their armor and evasion. Older versions you have to either look up, guess, or just pop a buff on anything that looks slightly threatening.
>>
>>167723307
s/pour/pore

crawl isn't a game that's as hugely spoiler-dependent as, say nethack, but it still has an annoying habit of hiding info from the player like damage numbers, actual monster AC/EV, etc

it's a good enough game when you're new but it gets kind of boring and samey

The problem with crawl is that being "good early" means literally nothing because early game is free anyway. This also applies to most other roguelikes.

Early game isn't free. Proof of this is the humongous early game deaths from a lot of players regardless of experience. Poison has a leverage on this since it's good early game, labeled as the hardest part of Crawl by many.

Secret tech is to capture summoners' demons and consume them for instant free money. Regular tech is to keep one slot just for cash cows, try to capture relatively low level demons for faster level growth (actually I don't know if that's true); consume in case of emergency, otherwise recycle your main demons when you find a better replacement for them I guess. I forgot but last time I checked the recycle cash maxes out after like 6 levels gained. You can pair consume/recycle/restore saver and a demon with a really low base level for instant cheap full HP/SP heals. It takes a turn to restore the demon again though.

Oh well, I died blindly reading scrolls while having a scroll of summon.

Do I have to load the save game to keep the term windows?

What's easy_id and keep_monster_memory? Should I enable these too?

Do I keep playing vanilla PCB or should I download Pseudowhatever or -R?

Is Human Samurai fine for beginners?

I'm reading the pasta and I think it's a bit outdated(?), also this general is pretty dead so might as well keep it alive.

rip no phase. To be fair they have +10 speed and 40 AC which is a lot early, especially since you just changed weapon types (so are at like -10 or -20 to hit from the untrained weapon, even though that clears up quickly)
>>
>>167752842
easy_id means even regular identify will act as *identify*. I'm not 100% sure on the term windows because I don't play on Windows os, but I know there's an init file in the PCB directory where you can set default starting settings and windows etc.

Human Samurai is fine. Samurai are a bit more complicated than a lot of PCB's many "melee with a twist" ideas simply because it gets 4 books of class-specific spells, but that's okay. Humans level quickly, but are not as strong at max level as some other races (though you can always intentionally or unwillingly polymorph later and get a race change).

I think keep monster memory preserves your character's knowledge from one game to the next as long as you're using the same savefile each time after you die? In any case, there are also monster spoilers at
>mikedebo.ca/files/poschengband-spoilers/mon-info.spo

PCB-R has elliptic's and MPA's quality of life changes which can be nice, and adds some other content, plus makes lategame leveling go faster. My biggest quibble is that it makes teleport immune monsters easier.

>>167756770
well if you want to literally be a dragon you can try pcb. A lot of games (including dcss and pcb) have draconians and kobolds, but DCSS' are stupidly non-scaled. Not sure what exactly you mean by scaly fetish. If you just mean bad dermatitis, I don't know of a game that simulates that.
>>
I'm probably retarded but where the hell are the Orc Caves in PosChengBand?

I don't mean on the overworld, that's easy enough to find, but when I actually enter the area, I can't find how to enter the dungeon - usually I walk around the mountain killing baby dragons until an cyclops ends my life
>>
>>167759468
If you enter the orc cave tile on the overworld moving up then it's somewhere north of you in the normal screen. If you enter east go east. Et cetera. Just keep moving until you see the staircase on the M screen.
>>
>>167759468
sometimes for some weird reason when you go back > to the regular wilderness from the overworld while on the overworld tile for a dungeon, you just spawn near and not on it. Try approaching the overworld dungeon tile from a different direction and then using >. Sometimes you need to use W to look around, but other times it's not even close enough for that
>>
>>167756770
As another anon said, PCB allows you to be a wide range of draconian and dragon characters. If you need your scales some other way, PCB also allows you to play a hydra which grows more heads as it levels up. Finally PCB has a mutation that can give almost any character scales (allowing for a boost to AC), so there's a whole world of scales out there for you in PCB!
>>
>>167752235
>Also what kind of fantasy game has Ewoks, what the fuck's up with this game?
PCB was originally Angband (Tolkien), which forked into ZAngband (adding Zelazny's Amber stuff), which through some more forks and feature grabs acquired damn near everything else, including DooM monsters and I think it went through a Japanese iteration (Furyband, maybe?).

Also I find PCB-R's quality of life changes incredibly welcome, but you may be less impatient than I am.

It's Hengband. I don't know the exact history, whether it was one or several Japanese devs, whether it was a fork or the main line. I know regular English-language Hengband is still developed today (a new version was released a couple months ago) but even now there still is a very active Japanese community that plays Japanese-language Hengband. The guy Deskull who created the horrifying pic-related of The Metal Babble is from the Japanese roguelike IRC channel called Gridbug .

Actually most of the odd stuff (including Ewoks, doom monsters, Cthulhu and Jaws, amongst others) came in with ZAngband, which is why even though it stood for Zelazny it was more commonly known as "Zany Angband".

I believe the Japanese iteration was Hengband (Hentai Angband.....) which is naturally a component of PosChengband. Most monsters from that iteration are missing character descriptions because they haven't been translated.

Even now, most of the stuff in PCB that is additional in comparison to vanilla Angband (such as the different towns, most of the quests, most of the magic realms and most of the extra enemies) originates from ZAngband 2.2.6, which is many years old. However ZAngband had some fairly crazy ideas after that that killed it (like removing hit/dam modifiers in favour of percentiles, and procedurally generated world maps and quests). The main thing that PCB has expanded on over that original ZAngband variant is the race/class options.

Playing PCB for the first time.
Reached the last level of the Stronghold, I'm seriously considering not digging into the main chamber because I fear that I will splat to all those mobs.

Anyways I have a few questions:
What's the difference between Phase Door and Teleportation?
Can staves be destroyed?
The dungeon was extremely erratic, some OOD things called hellbeasts near the surface and then the levels just randomly shrank into a single room or large cave then went back to large mazes, is this normal?

Thanks for your time.
>>

>What's the difference between Phase Door and Teleportation?
teleportation has significantly longer range.

phase door's short range means it's useful for, say, kiting a melee enemy while using ranged attacks, but it's not too useful for actually escaping things

>>167800997
>Can staves be destroyed?
yes, by fire damage, chaos, or toxic waste
resistances help here of course. 2 pips mean it will almost never happen and 3 pips of the relevant resistance make it ACTUALLY never happen

only rods are immune to inventory destruction.

Someone already answered the first two, but as far as erratic dungeon goes, yeah that's normal but uncommon.
The Greater Hellbeast you encountered near the surface is a joke unique enemy - he has a scary name and description, and does annoying things like bore through walls towards you and teleport you around, but he can't actually hurt you. He has ridiculously OOD HP but other than that he's just an irritant.
Also depending on your birth options, you can occasionally get arena levels (whole floor is basically a giant room) or small dungeons (sometimes just a couple of rooms), but large maze is normal. The only thing I'm not sure about is that other dungeons (such as the icky caves) seem to have fuckier mazes with rooms that don't quite join up properly and stuff.

Holy shit:

https://github.com/crawl/crawl/commit/b9e5f3fc1c77b7484e45122498c1692b8fab371f

Crawl just became further mutation-oriented.

>The new !Mutation will strip 2-6 mutations, add 1-3 random mutations, then add one good mutation... in that order. It takes the spawn weights of all three previous potions, and thus is now the third most common potion in the game. (On average, ~17 will spawn in a three-rune victory.) This is subject to further change and balancing.

Very late update to this:

It's actually kind of difficult to test explore_wall_bias in a "reasonable" way. &O performs a test of fully mapping out a level via auto-explore and then printing how long it took in steps. By performing a test, altering your options file, and then resetting the game, you can see different speeds at which the algorithm maps a level.

The central problem is that the &O test completely ignores "greed", or the tendency to go off-course in order to autopickup items. It also ignores/removes monsters from the map, along with doors, but that's less of an issue, since those would affect different wall biases in roughly the same way.

Anyway, some things I've noticed, both from testing and actual gameplay:
* 0, which is the default, is a perfectly fine setting.
* 1, for whatever reason, is one of the worst settings for it.
* The best settings seem to be in the range of 2 to 8.
* Each setting higher than about 12 (sometimes less depending on the size/complexity of the map) made the test finish at exactly the same speed, frequently following exactly the same patterns.
* In general, a 0 setting is best if a given floor doesn't have many nooks and crannies on the edges AND if the floor has fair amounts of open space in the middle areas. Early/mid Dungeon is usually the best for this.
* Conversely, non-zero values work best for Lair and Orc, where you'd expect many little corners. Amongst each other, there's no real guideline to which value does better, although values less than LOS/2 (around 1 to 4) get patterns that "feel" humanlike.

explore_wall_bias = 3 is where I settled on, although I'd love to try more rigorous testing if I could figure out how to get all the things I wanted working.

No, just no. You seem to be unable to differentiate between grinding and playing.
Grinding is a term derived from RPG's where you would have to loiter around an area you've already explored/completed, killing more monsters than necessary, in order to gain levels/items to tackle the next stage of the game.
However there is also forced grind, where the game forces you to participate in repetitive tasks/actions in order to progress. Forced grind would be a game that forced you to kill 10 of a certain monster one after another, when 5 would have been fine. This is usually done to artificially lengthen the lifespan of a game, and is also called "padding".
Contrary to what some might say, the grind of these types in a game like PCB is actually minimal. However there is also subjective grind, which is far more common and what PCB suffers from. Subjective grind is game progression that FEELS like padding because of the repetitive nature of it, but is different. The problem with PCB is that the game has a single objective and everything before that point is essentially just gaining levels and loot, the primary purpose of true grinding. However PCB has a range of quests and dungeons to explore and a wide variety of enemies, and procedural generation means that almost every scenario is different, meaning that you never need to retread old ground, making the grind purely subjective.
DoomRL has different progress markers, but these do not form any type of grind. Challenges force you to play the game in a different way and under different circumstances, and each is like a different game in itself (though naturally similar). Badges and medals are things you can achieve in any one playthrough, or sometimes cumulatively, but they are purely optional and act more like achievements. Aiming for them can be another way to play, but cumulative achievements (build 10,000 assemblies) aren't designed to be grinded and therefore the fault lies with the player, not the design.

>>167837624

There's three of them but they're not any more interesting than otabbing.

Enchanters. SpEn stabbing is the best because the game design of Hexes is to just cast debuffs to stab until it lands and Spriggans can always reroll an encounter. If your mana ran out from recasting, just walk away, press 5, start recasting hexes, stab, rinse and repeat.

Necromancers. Polearm evoking tedium over either unlimited zombies and skeletons from Kiku or varied undead allies from Yred. Fedhas works too for Polearm evoking tedium but Necromancers always need corpses so it's counter-productive.

>where the game forces you to participate in repetitive tasks/actions in order to progress

Sounds like every other game ever made. Playing more is to grind, I really hope you don't limit this arbitrary definition to what's only convenient for you. Content is correlated with grind because a game isn't interesting when a player extracts all of its playable content and entertainment value by just killing one goblin. A grind is an inevitable consequence of having content.
>>
>>167851689

Breathing is very tedious and boring, it forces the irl player to do this repetitive optimal task in order to progress irl. Life is truly the shittiest roguelike, there's not even an option to remove this tedium.
>>
>>167852372
Breathing is relatively well designed, because it happens automatically rather than manually.
It only makes you seek out places where you can breathe.

The only time breathing is done badly is when you overdose on opiates and need to breathe manually.
>>
>>167852576

It's just tedium that is automated. It still adds to the total cognitive load of the optimal player resulting into unnecessary net deficits when removing it is a better rework.
>>
In line with the recent !Mut rework:

I think Corrosion should be changed. From its introduction as a permanent effect, it always seemed unnecessarily cruel. Even now, when it's temporary, there are still cruel things like a) facing strong corrosion-inducers like Entropy Weavers before you have any rCorr and b) the various in-game numbers associated with Corrosion are wrong -- your loss of enchantment is more like -16 instead of -4, even worse for higher numbers.

As is, getting corroded as ostensibly a no-brainer: try not to get corroded, and run away and wait if you do, especially at high corrosion values.

It can be made more interesting by
1) Making corrosion less prohibitively dangerous than it currently is at low values and slightly more dangerous than it currently is at high values.
2) Inverting the corrosion wear-off rate: you lose corrosion at a (very) slow rate at -4 but it's much faster at higher rates.

This adds a truly interesting choice, where although you'll be in more danger with bad corrosion, there will be a higher chance of it passing quickly. Also, because of food/OOD clock, you won't make the no-brainer decision of waiting until you're un-corroded when you're at low values.

Most importantly, it's more in-line with corrosion being a temporary status. It doesn't make much sense for high levels of corrosion to immediately return you to utter normalcy after they've run their course for so long. A "flayed" type of situation -- where it's all in your character's mind -- is more reasonable: at high levels of corrosion, your character recognizes their AC and weapons to be absurdly damaged, so they quickly realize it's all in their minds; on the other hand, at low levels, it takes more time/convincing for the character to realize their weapon and armor aren't actually deformed.
>>
>>167853598

There's nothing cruel about it, you're just bad.

>A grind is an inevitable consequence of having content.
Not really.

It's a consequence of having content you want to acquire and aren't limited in acquiring.

Consider the stereotypical DDA bloat content:
No one really grinds for silk panties, because silk panties give no bonuses.
And then Brogue content:
No one grinds for staves because drops are limited.

Grind happens not because there are things that can be acquired, but because you can trade time for those things and because time is cheaper than those things.

"grind" is specifically doing repetitive, uninteresting shit not because you enjoy the gameplay but because you want the benefits from doing it (like more loot and XP)

replaying a level in a platformer because you want to find 100% of the secrets isn't grinding, you're just playing the game and having fun while also moving towards some goal

In DDA or any other roguelike, grind happens because you are either looking for good loot or farming exp or just plain exploration. This repetitive process of exploration by going to new undiscovered tiles hoping to find good loot or whatever floats your boat and the bloat that you obtain/discover/refuse to obtain are its inevitable consequences. Eating, drinking, killing zombies for exp, gathering materials for your fagtruck, farming and other bloat are also included in this lineup of tedium. A lot of these are completely optional but they're still content that need to be scrutinized; just like how your typical crawldev (resulting in a Hell/Pan roulette) and ircredditavern drones complain about Crawl extended being tedious despite being completely optional is a proof of this.

You can see all the possible runes by pressing "}" in-game.

Runes don't offer anything positive or useful to you. In fact, I *think* the Pan/Hell runes alert enemies to your location. You are right about experience, although you'll tend to avoid enemies as much as you can in the extended game.

You can get most runes by searching the bottom floor of the branch where the rune is found. The Abyssal rune is different, as it can be found on floors 3 to 5 of the Abyss, being easier to find on the deeper floors but more dangerous as well. The Pandemonium runes are also different, since 1) the demonic rune can be found on any floor with a special vault pattern and 2) you are specially alerted when on floors with the other Pan runes.

If you're new and using a melee-oriented setup, you should stick to the non-Slime Lair branch runes and the Vaults' rune.
>>
>>167870913
>what are they?
Tokens, keys that open certain parts of the game. Type does not matter, only number. To open the final zone you need any 3 of them.

Taking a rune disables -CTele in the versions where it's still a thing.
>>
>>167870913
>>167871872
>Runes don't offer anything positive or useful to you.

I should add:

They offer nothing besides access to certain places, which is only based on the number of runes, not having any specific one.

Entrance to The Vaults require 1 rune; Ziggurats require 2; Zot requires 3.
>>
>>167870913
pro players don't get them to grind
getting the runes is just the objective of the game

it's not like "if you get 15 runes the orbrun will be easier", it's just that a win with 15 runes is more important than one with 3

You'll be killing about 10,000 monsters or more in a typical game of PCB. You can reduce that total by killing more powerful monsters (for better loot and experience) or increase that total by "grinding" weaker monsters for inferior loot and experience.

A few thousand of those will be pack monsters like orcs/ogres/bloodletters of Khorne who are just popcorn to a midgame character.
>>
>>167877708
Sure, but what about the specifics? In DCSS, for example, you might kill 5 ogres before that monster becomes easy enough to be treated like walking food. You're never really grinding. If I have to kill 1000 hounds, there are at least different kinds of hounds, right?

>Potions of Cure Mutation and Beneficial Mutation have been removed. Most vaults containing Cure/Beneficial potions have been converted to Mutation, or another suitably good item.

>The goal is to increase player control and interaction with the mutation mechanic, and to generate more relevant and interesting decisions that will differ on a character-by-character (or even mutation-by-mutation) basis.
>>
>>167878017
I'd say if you're playing conservatively, you'll be killing about 20 of a certain mundane nonpack enemy (ancient red dragon, frost giant, etc) before you happen to reach a point on the power curve where they're no longer any real threat. You could avoid this danger entirely by spending hours grinding easier enemies.

For instance, for an average buffed melee character with the right resistances, killing an ancient dragon at level 30 is doable. But killing an ancient dragon at level 33 is probably going to be very easy. I'm guesstimating that you'll be killing 20ish ancient (color) dragons between levels 30 and 33 before they become absolutely no threat alone.
>>
>>167878976
OK, thanks. I think that's a good measure of how grindy a game is, since doing the same thing repetitively is what makes grinding unpleasant.

What roguelikes are extremely user-friendly and provide lots of info to the player about controls and what he can or can't do? I tried playing nethack but most of the time I was struggling with the commands to do anything that wasn't hitting stuff, and when I managed to do them I would get killed by some bullshit I could have not predicted.
>>
>>167882093
Yep. Even Hepl explosions got removed. They were really fun...
>>
>>167882189
Probably DCSS. It has a tutorial, plus various help screens via "?" (the most useful being via "??").
>>
>>167882189
DCSS is probably the most user-friendly roguelike, and once you get the 'winning formula' down, it becomes super easy to win. At which point you start playing challenge runs or meme combos to entertain yourself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFXhkJJNUGo

this is a good tutorial series, by a really good player, MiBe is also the easiest combo in the game so you should have no trouble winning after mastering the basics.

I already played loads of DCSS, got something like 3 or 4 wins and one 15 rune win that was boring as hell by the end. I also played brogue and loved it, even if I never managed to win since the draggens are way too strong. I also played shiren the wanderer without exploiting the storage mechanic.

I kind of like a roguelike as accessible as those, but wihout being too braindead or filled with grinding.

Just got my first win in Brogue. A somewhat bothersome early game, but relatively few hiccups later on. Some highlights of the run:
>Carelessly equipping two cursed rings early on.
>First potion of Detect Magic on floor 16(!).
>+4 plate armor saves the day! Accidentally got it corroded once by not noticing an acid mound. Still annoyed with myself over that, but no big deal in the long run.
>Throwing two cursed rings into the lava.
>Late game tentacle horror pet!
>Only one dragon spawned, and managed to avoid it. Had consumables to deal with them, but still rather lucky.

Still, though, I can scarcely imagine doing a melee build without a ring of transference to back it up. Just seems like too many too dangerous enemies to not have a method of attritioning them. Traps are good and all, but it's hard to maneuver to them when dealing with certain types of enemies.

I wish to cheese the fuck out of early PCB. I've vaguely heard of hydra farming, but is that a thing that's doable with melee classes?
>>
>>167892517
Yeah, just use devices.
>>

Do 2d6 magic missile wands even have enough charges to kill hydras or lizard kings

that seems like a massive waste of time
>>

In PCB you get EXP just for doing damage.
>>
>>167893007
It's just go to a swamp, shoot hydras, teleport to safety, right?
>>
>>167893284
Yeah. Don't try to take on hydras with lots of heads though; they can deal fire damage from a distance, so you might get one-shot.
>>
>>167893418
5-headed hydras are the lowest-level ones with a ranged attack but it's only stinking cloud
think 7-headed are the first ones with a breath attack.

The swamp south of Outpost is all 2 and 4-headed. Very rarely you'll see an OOD 5hydra

Anyway, mariliths seem pretty strong once you get some good weapons, provided you don't do dumb things like decide to slap a wyrm of power and get forty dragons dumped on your head. I just smashed my way through the quest uniques on the way to d:98, though the worst one was only shub-niggurath and not like nodens or something.

Ah, so you can! Didn't know that. I thought I had done a fairly good job of scouring the documentation, but it looks like there are still some finer points I had missed. Thanks for the tip.

Just when I think I have a fairly good handle on the game, there's still something new to learn, like using tunneling to destroy turrets, or reflecting bolts off of crystal.

>add newer files that define targeter_los

I think I'm going to have to replace the whole source so I can try again, since ctrl+z is incapable of undoing all the merges and edits I did.

There are several roguelikes that don't really have bump combat, but they ultimately come down to cycling through your abilities in order so it ends up not terribly different.

Frozen Depths
Gearhead
Incursion, Halls of the Goblin King
Forray into Norrendin

was there stasis in .18? or is my only option appropriation?
>>
>>167906391
It's pretty good, but you don't have a high enough level for it.

Items in Crawl are like in Diablo. You have to meet the requirements, except here the game just kills you instead of disallowing you from equipping the item.

>>167907090
That's what you get for not being an ant.
>>
>>167906391
Str+4 and SeeInv are pretty good additions. +Blink is a bit overrated, but you might find it useful.

Otherwise, its main weakness is that it can't be enchanted. So, besides pumping your Armor skill, it'll never be better than it is right now.

DoomRL strays from the formula and more towards ranged combat and explosions and a more active feel, so I'd recommend that. On the other hand, for everything it does different, it can certainly have periods of, as you put it, "you shoot the demon! you shoot the demon! you shoot the demon! the demon dies!" But I find the non-regenerating health really cuts down on the mindless mowing-down, lest you be chipped to death.

Coupled with being 70% base speed instead of 90, Zombies should have more HP than slimes.
