Nothing else in the game seems set up for a long term grind, but upgrading character stars is? It just seems out of place, like whatever the bottom right greyed out thing in the battle menu is there to help take care of it, or like they plan on extending the level cap somewhat early into the game's life cycle.

It's not going to die because of any of that. Gacha games are like this. Honestly the drop rates for 5* are very generous compared to other very popular gacha games. FEH offers 3% drop rate chance for a 5*, while other games has around 0.3% or something like it as drop rate for top drops.

If this is your first gacha game I can imagine understand if it doesn't seem fair, but this is how these games work. There are even games where you can't even updrage certain units to top rank.

The art is completely flat, doesn't draw the viewer in at all and tries to straddle realism and anime too much for the game's style.
It's detailed, but the details don't serve to make the image any more visually pleasing. Simple lines and some shading placed in the right places with confidence can go a long way.

I would argue the OP picture is better drawn, and obviously also more in line with the other art in the game, as well as cuter.

I don't think you get gacha gets. This is not something you're supposed to play for two weeks and be done with your team. These kinds of games are something you invest months into. You have to carefully manage feathers and orbs to eventually get a decent team and continue to collect. Gacha games are not for everyone.
