In the upper left of the battle window is an indicator of whether or not you are allowed to retreat yet. It's a white flag, with a skip/crossed circle over it if you can't.
In terms of bait armies, it's exactly as you'd expect. Put a small army on defensive terrain, wait for the enemy to march toward it, and as soon as they are locked (there will be a grey lock icon meaning they can't cancel the movement) send in your reinforcing larger army.
Also, something you may not know if you're new is that if someone is sieging your fort and your general has more maneuver, you become the defender if you attack them. So build forts in defensive terrain, like hills, forests, and mountains for the best bonus.

Ideally you want equal or greater forcelimit than the enemy, but in an emergency, or to take a big chunk out of a big for before they can fuck you, don't be afraid to merc up and run on loans. Especially since manpower is a big limiter as a small nation without quantity ideas. Also you ideally want to pick every battle. Don't get caught in neutral terrain as the defender, and don't attack into mountains or across a river unless you know you have them beaten. It's just a -1 or 2 to rolls but you can get FUCKED by RNG, especially since the AI gets more army tradition from battles so they always have god generals.

Wow this game has turned out quite differently than I expected. Previously when I played EUIV years ago and in EU3 when I played England>Great Britain I stayed off the continent because France was always unstoppable and I could never get any good allies to fight against them. However from the very start all of Iberia, Burgundy, and Austria were ready to gang up and fuck up France. For awhile Castile was allied to them but they got wrecked pretty hard. My plan is to annex the rest of France and go for some Angevin-like borders. Portugal and myself are the only colonizers (myself in Canada/New England and Portugal in Brazil) so far with Castile focused on Aragon/Italy/African coast.
Short term goals are to continue colonizing down the NA coast, grab South Africa and Ascension/Falklands.
Medium goals - Start conquering India OR change things up and Conquer Korea+Japan and anglofy them.
Long term goals - Not sure, I want to continue this game in Vicky 2 so try to help shape things in the continent to go interesting. Austria's about to pass their third reform and Muscovy is going balls to the walls.
My plan isn't to keep hold of the French lands but once they're all converted to English I'm gonna release either the whole thing as a vassal or split it into two and release both as vassals. When I convert it to Victoria 2 I might make up some different culture or something for them other than british/french. What do you guys think? Is that plan retarded?
Also when the HRE forms (Austria's been wrecking everyone it's inevitable) do I side with them or Burgundy? Half of burgundy's lands are in the HRE but their capital isn't and I've been allied to them both since the beginning of the game, both have helped me greatly.

Everytime you develop a province it adds to the earliest institution in that province that you haven't embraced.
The amount you get is based on the development of the province, best institutions yield per mana is from dev 16.
Either way it's around 2000 mana into a province and you'll get renaissance in india, china or japan or whatever.

The only thing I know is that when I build buildings I have seen that it gives me a lot of profit to build it. Optimal? I doubt it, I haven't thought it through that thoroughly. I bought a lot of factories, I've never had enough money to just fill everything with factories before, that was really fun. I'll just buy a lot of universities then. Workshops and Manufactories have synergies with eachother.
So it is possible that you looked at a province with a good trade goods, and compared workshop vs temple, then build a temple, and then built a manufactory.
While if you had a manufactory in the province, the workshop would beat the temple.
It's not that important to play optimally though, but my autism forces me to keep it in mind.

Yeah I'd only use it if I was ahead in mil tech and I was near max mana, and I was gonna fight a somewhat tough war so I could put 500 sword mana into it.
Otherwise I'd develop with it in a low dev province with a university in it over time until it is worth to tech again. Or develop with the intention of getting another build slot in a province.

The temples are probably blocking off some manu+workshop combos.
After you've buitl universities everywhere you can see if you have some provinces that are close to dev 10, and bring them up to 10, so you have another build slot.
Or if they're at 3 dev with a good trade good you may want to destroy the temple to build manufactory+workshop.

You cannot deny, EU4 is he best gsg ever created. You cannot argue that it is just relying on your allies anymore after the new update and all new institutions spawn in Europe rather than Asia or Africa which makes sense. It has the most in depth economic system and some of the most satisfying war mechanics. There's nothing like being dug into the mountains alongside a great general with a severely outnumbered force and still coming out on top or being forced to plan the perfect campaign as your allies do not owe you any favours, but still triumphing regardless. And don't even get me started on the multiplayer gameplay. The complex trade, alliances, coalitions, etc. It's just great. A great well rounded gsg.

Should I only annex Pattani, or should I force my overextension and annex those territories I gain from Pasai as well? It would ammount to 55% overextension if I did the latter, which means a lot of admin points, which in turn I need to unlock my first Idea.

Especially the invite to court now showing you potential people in the character browser, instead of having to click for 30 minutes on each individual to have a good council, only to have them die 10 years later and force you to repeat it again

Yes, betrayed Castille when they were attacked by Aragon + France, then Castile made Aragon its bitch in a personal union.
I only took 1 province in Granada and 1 in Morocco at the start of the game.
I didn't focus on diplomacy at all and instead focused on trying to explore and colonize since I had no income and was in debt for a while so I gave up on war. I thought this would give me a lead but somehow Castille and England are already colonizing next to my colonies.

Well I download the mods, put them in the proper folders. The mods then show up on the startup menu of the game, I can select them, see if they are out of date, all of that. But, when I try to load up the game with a mod activated, it simply loads up the game as if there were no mods at all.

I've always liked establishing rule over an area with a decent bit of micro-states as an unequal federation (that is to say, vassals). I haven't touched EU4 in a while so I can't say which would be a good area (but I'd imagine there's enough releasable states in the middle east to do it) and I can't say how much you'd have to mod it to make that work well.

Actually, what I was thinking is that if I had not dismantled the HRE earlier (to get the achievement), I could've just used that interface as the emperor and made those released balkan states vassals in it, along with netherlands. But too late for that.

What's my second idea group after Exploration?
I'm indecisive between Innovative (yes, really), Economic, Expansion or Humanist. Or maybe a military idea group but I'm always indecisive about those period.
