Ninjas are not good to fight against during enemy phase, and your ninjas don't work as well during enemy phase.

Generally though in past games it was the case because it meant an OP unit could steamroll multiple enemies on a single turn, reducing the number of necessary turns. In the case of bosses, it means taking less hits if you only attack on retaliation.

It depends on the game. A game like Conquest is more player-phase oriented due to the lack of strong 1-2 range, strong enemy skills, and generally low HP for your units.

A game like the GBA FEs and Tellius games are very enemy phase heavy due to the sheer amount of units and your ability to use strong 1-2 range as well as snowball. You generally hear that it's better to fight more during enemy phase because on enemy phase you can get a very high number of kills if you can ORKO everyone that attacks you, thereby letting you clear the chapter more efficiently. On player phase, each of your units can only ever kill one enemy (unless danced).

For Conquest specifically?

Make use of switch and transfer shenanigans, especially in the early game. On harder difficulties it's obviously harder to one round the enemies, which should be your goal. You can move a paired unit up to attack someone, pass the secondary unit to an adjacent unit, and then dual strike, with the adjacent unit getting stat boosts from the unit you just passed them to help with their damage. This might come in handy in situations where the enemy you're fighting is either too fast/too bulky for you to take out on your own.

Also make use of tonics, especially on your key units. Speed and defense tonics always help. They stack with your mess hall boosts as well, so you can get some decent bonuses.

Obviously you ideally don't want a non-paired unit exposed to the enemy on enemy phase, or they'll dual strike the shit out of them.

Use supports and don't be afraid to make stat backpacks for your frontline units.

Also, back to the switch/transfer shenanigans, if you move as a pair and at the end of movement switch and drop the high mov unit one space ahead, you get an extra movement point from that turn essentially. So you can do that if you're going long distances with no combat.

Normal Mode Conquest is significantly easier than Hard Mode Conquest, from what I've heard (haven't played Normal Conquest myself).

Hard Birthright even with no grinding is not very hard, especially if you make use of Ryoma and decent pairups. The maps are very open so any strong 1-2 range you can get is godlike (Ryoma, one of the ninjas with a good backpack, etc.)

Whether or not it's harder than Normal Conquest, I'm not sure. But if it is, it's probably not by much.

Don't bw a retard with Attack and Guard stance. Guard Stance seems much better but Attack stance is some really dank shit. You'll have to find out on your own but keep this in mind:

Use mounted units to rescue someone near them who can't move very far, then use the remaining movement from the mounted unit to move far away. If you position mounted units correctly, you can use this to "rescue chain" units with low mov very far very quickly. It helps you get across maps much faster so you're not waiting around for your slow units at the back all the time. This also lets you throw in chip damage with foot units and get out safely with a rescue since you can rescue and retreat with your extra movement (when you're using a mounted unit to rescue of course).

So yeah, it's super useful. It seems clunky compared to pair up, but that's because pair-up gives you literally no disadvantage to stacking two units on the same tile; it only gives you free boosts.
