All three of that, in addition to how he's a tragic character not because he's a dindu nuffin but because no one was ever able to recognize him for who he really was, not even himself.

Ouma stands out in the prologue as the only one who's wildly out of character there and who also seems to not recognize the game show at all (People like Miu comment on talent, so she might have seen it before). Now that we know he's the exception to the cast in many ways (The other being Kiibo), we can only speculate on how this discrepancy drives him- For example, if we assume that the audition videos are true and everyone joined this killing game for various reasons, there's a possibility he somehow got caught up in this against his will and ended up being the one with a 'broken' personality, someone sold him out or it's punishment for him as he's the only criminal in the group in the real world.

We don't know how bad his twisted personality is, but perhaps the straitjacket is indication that it was enough to warp him so he becomes willing to commit evil things his normal self wouldn't do, albeit he tries to do so for a good reason to give the mastermind a middle finger. Everyone else is playing their part perfectly since they don't know they're acting in the first place, while Ouma has the unenviable task of winning the game on his own terms without causing undue harm to people just as trapped as he is even if they aren't his friends, all while questioning who he really is.

Where the tragedy really starts is that he's forced to act more and more as the person he's supposed to be but who isn't him, and people believe him when he's been trying to help before. Given the nature of lies and truth, I feel Ouma clings so much to being objective as that's the only way he can remember who he really was: A smart and resourceful boy who likes witticisms and pranks, possibly.

Sadly as we know truth is rarely objective and Ouma's sole frame of reference of who he really is as a person depends on the people who see him as an actor, but the irony here is that he's the only one who knows they're but actors and actresses, unable to differentiate between the two. It's hard to say how much he loves Saihara but he definitely sees potential in Saihara recognizing who he really is given his skill, and even though Ouma knows Saihara isn't a true detective he still gives him a push towards the truth, being extremely analytical himself (Kaito by the way does so too as inspiration, so technically Kaito and Ouma are both deutergonists ala Chiaki and Komaeda).

Miu's motivations finally revealed. She did take the remembering light at the start of chapter 4 very hard, but she still pulled a Kirumi or Sayaka. And the poster goes on to describe how much of a bitch Miu was to pretty much everyone throughout the entire killing game.

Three wrong things about this explanation:

1. I thought it was confirmed that Miu didn't program the entire VR world herself. The VR world was already there, she just modified it to change the walls/warp zones and take out all dangerous objects (except for the hammer).

Which begs the question that if she wanted out so much, then why not encourage him to put his plan into action instead? I find it very strange that the 3 key players in chapter 4 are Miu, Ouma, and Gonta. Ouma was collaborating with both of them. If I didn't know better, I'd say there was some kind of ruse going on behind the scenes. Miu's avatar also had a different setting than the others. I feel like there's going to be a twist where both Ouma and Miu survived somehow and are secretly drinking Champagne on a beach somewhere now that their elaborate keikaku worked.

Yeah, even if Ouma used Gonta and backstabbed him in an excessively cruel way, I don't think his intention was to use Gonta from the beginning (aka from when they started hanging out) to commit murder. He was basically (and I use that loosely, he did have other options) given no choice but to die or use Gonta and chose the latter while committing to the EVIL ruse until the end. It isn't justified, but I don't think he necessarily wanted do this. There's quite a bit of evidence in his pre trial breakdown and post trial speech that he regretted doing what he did to Gonta and truly felt guilt and sadness over him dying.

Again, this does not justify any of what he does, but I do think he saw Gonta as more than just a murder tool.

We wouldn't know because we never get to see inside her head and most of the information about her and her inventions are fed to us by Ouma, but it is possible that was her intention. Of course she wouldn't tell anyone she's doing that because they would maybe object to being murdered in the first place, but we'll never know because no one could know those were her intentions.

It wouldn't be the first time you'd have to look past the wall of the characters not knowing information and into the context of everything that they've done up to that point to understand the motivations of their actions. That's basically Ouma's murder/suicide in a nutshell- Saihara and crew only know so much about why that happened. The player has to piece together his behavior throughout the entire game to actually understand it, and I'm thinking Miu is a similar case.

I am far from being an Ouma fan but I am part of the crowd that believes backstabbing Gonta wasn't part of Ouma's plan at all; through his body language and freak outs I think it was mostly an improvisation when he noticed Gonta wasn't sticking to the plan due to his memory loss, and Ouma was trying to distract the investigation by making himself look as EVUL as possible in order to use his reputation to make himself look as a culprit desperate to throw the blame on someone else.

I like this interpretation solely because I perceive Chapter 4 as Ouma's plans going wrong again and again: First with Miu's betrayal, then with Gonta's 'betrayal' (actually a memory loss), and finally during the trial when he failed to save the mess that the case became.

It's his giant failure and it's all his fault, and a comeuppance of some way. No wonder he snaps.

Yep. You can tell Ouma's desire to end this game as "cleanly" as possible go straight to hell come chapter 4, when his intentional suspiciousness and antagonism come to bite him in the ass. He loses probably the two people that could even remotely be called his friends or allies, and it's entirely his fault.

I do think him selling out Gonta partially an attempt to use his own shitty reputation to make it look like a desperate accusation, but he had to change it to actual betrayal when that shit wasn't working. Regardless, in the end, he's sent the closest thing he could call to a friend to death and no mater how good at acting he is he isn't immune to that level of despair.

Nor the despair of seeing the world in such a fucked up state either, actually. I do think a lot of Ouma's reasons for derailing the ruse train into LMAO I'M THE EVIL MASTERMIND NOW STAY HERE FOREVER ville is because he at least partially lost it after seeing the outside state of the world. Not to the level of Gonta, but if something is that bad to make Gonta of all people want to murder everyone as an act of mercy, it has to be something that at least causes some real despair in Ouma.

And once again, none of this justifies what he did. He still fucked up majorly in chapter 4.

I do think it's a possibility to be added in the future, but in the game proper, as a self-contained work, I don't think it's what's meant to be transmitted. Miu was basically playing by the rules, she was aiming for a graduation fair and square, and I don't think she'd risk breaking a rule and ruining her possibility of graduation, thus rendering her effort completely useless.

In particular, I think Miu was genuinely regretful for what she had to do, but she perceived their lives as a worthy sacrifice when compared to what she could do for the world. Risking ruining her 'graduation' with a trick would be too dangerous for a pragmatical person like her.

Of course, this is only assuming the game as a self-contained universe, I totally believe it's plausible for this to be an option in future material.

The status of the outside world fucked up all three of them.

The 'light and soft' version of the outside world memories made Miu want to get out at all costs to try and put her inventions to good use for the world, at the cost of the rest of the cast.

The 'hardcore' version of the memories that Gonta and Ouma saw drove them to the opposite extreme, and they lost all will to try and escape the school, as they saw in detail how useless it'd be. Gonta chose the euthanasia approach and attempted to help everyone out of the misery the school and the outside world had, while Ouma focused all of his brainwork into trying to fuck the Mastermind's game.

Ouma was definitely affected by the memory, as he lost his will to survive the game and decided that if he was going to die he might as well die ruining the mastermind's goals.

He fucked up badly in Chapter 4, and that's why he tried again in Chapter 5, with a different approach.

It's an entire book that details exactly the way he speaks and accounts for different responses during the trial. In hindsight chapter 5 was a crowning moment of awesome for both of them, by planning things he did Ouma unintentionally got Kiibo's antenna broken and it led to the destruction of the school, while Kaito died finally being able to go to space like he always wanted.

There's finally some explanation as to why Ouma thought Monokuma would care about a false verdict.

He figured out that this game was being shown/broadcast to someone or some group, that monokuma is constantly being supervised and that it would not be an entertaining game if the mastermind broke their own rules. He surmised from his dealings with monokuma to get the remembering light into the VR world that monokuma acts in the interest of making the game "exciting" to the people watching it, and that breaking the rules to brute force an execution would make it the opposite of that. He also figured that the world isn't so fucked enough for them to be the last 16 people, so he figured that putting a stop to the killing game through this rule fuckery and have them just all live there would make the viewers lose interest.

So he basically figured out Junko's rules for her own killing game, except swapping "inducing despair" with "making it exciting".

In the (fake) backstory for the end of the world, it was said that meteors brought down a virus to earth that infected and killed large portion of the population. These 16 students were chosen as part of the project to send them to space to preserve them partially because of their talents but also because they were immune to this virus.

However, as Monokuma reveals, some people have partial immunity and it just takes longer for the symptoms/effects to show up, and the students were chosen based on the fact that they weren't showing symptoms and were just assumed to be immune. Kaito is one of those later-showing people.

So Kaito literally has space AIDS. Or is getting slowly poisoned by TDR somehow for ratings.

I wouldn't say he's horrendously tragic. Yes, his intentions were ultimately noble: he wanted to end the killing game. While part of his justification for it was he hated people taking enjoyment from everyone's despair and pain, the other part was that he hated being in a game where he's controlled and confined. I don't know to what degree empathy for all the other students came into his motivations to end the game but it wasn't at the forefront of his actions. In the end he may have been a principled person, but he wasn't a kind or compassionate one.

He's not entirely tragic. There's still a lot wrong he did to achieve what right he could in the end.
