so /gsg/ do you take provinces that you don't have a claim on in eu 4? its seems like having claims is important but it is difficult to get a bunch of claims at once and it can be slow going only eating a layer of provinces at a time.

Usually I try to get claims on everything I plan to take, but that's not always possible, and not always necessary. If they're berber/hungarian/whatever that increases coring costs, it's basically essential.

Early game it can be good to take more just to cripple someone that might otherwise get more allies in time for a second war. Late game if you are planning to make a client state you obviously don't care about coring. Likewise if you plan to release and feed a vassal you don't need to worry about it.

Also if your monarch is giving you good admin points per month, the little bit it saves you isn't as necessary. However, keep in mind that if you use the Conquest CB and take non-claim provinces it will cost you paper mana, as those provinces are outside the CB. Lategame it doesn't matter much since you can use the Imperialism CB to take any province as part of the war and just use claims to reduce coring cost.

It's easy.
First of all, you need all of your diplo points on lockdown in Germany and Italy, abandon anything else. N°1 priority until you form SGF is to keep Saxony in your sphere to prevent NGF from forming
Keep up to date with diplo tech.
Puppet CB S-P in 1836 and ally Two Sicillies. If you keep a good eye on revolts, this should prevent Italy from unifying till the 1900's when 200M Garibaldini deathstacks start to appear.
If you want you can take release nation CB and release Sardinia first, to cuck Savoy even further.
In Germany, your priority is to form SGF, be ready to take Sigmarien when Prussia is weak, usually in the 1860's when they go to war with France or Russia over various bullshit. If you have enough warscore releasing Silesia is also a good strategy.
Once SGF forms, there are chances they'll go GP and stop being your puppet, which is kind of regrettable, but good in the long since now south and north Germany are matched.
If you feel like Silesia-less Prussia is too vulnerable to the SGF (if any other GP shits on them, it can happen), just unsphere Saxony and let NGF form.
Keep a close alliance with SGF and you shouldn't have much of a problem repeatedly BTFOing the NGF.
Otherwise bully the Ottomans whenever you can and get several Bulgaria and Albania as puppets.
You have several options with Serbia, from conquest to letting them form Yugoslavia and puppeting them.
Get secret ballots and universal voting ASAP so you can become Danubian Federation and get a load of accepted pops.

How would Rome have any advantage if some crazy as fuck emperor decided to try to invade China? They would need to move hundreds of thousands of troops (if not a million or more!), almost certainly over land, which would take so much fucking time that the Chinese would have plenty of advance warning. Just keeping that army alive would consume half the food in central asia. If they ever even got to lands controlled by the Qin they would be approaching from the west, where China's natural defenses against invasion are strongest.

Now, if you put the entire Roman military in the right place at the right time, sure, they could probably take over China just like the mongols did. But that would just never happen unless Rome had already conquered everything between the Med. and India first, at which point they would probably be unstoppable if they didn't immediately collapse.

If you're going to craft a Rome vs. China scenario, you can't begin the with assumption that X is invading Y or vice versa. Given the logistics of the time, whoever is defending will have the decisive advantage given the logistics of the period.

Events that show the evolution of knowledge and thinking beyond just teching up? Decisions to embrace different concepts like the abandonment of Jerusalem at the world's center? Or an actually evolving map because of Terra Incognita, that fills in in broad strokes based on rumors that may or may not be true? That might be cool for early EU and CK at longer distances sure.

All of those ideas are good, yeah, especially the evolving map for longer timespans. Even if it were broken up into different, discrete map types for various "eras." Basically I'd like any sort of experimentation in the projection of maps in historically based games that more accurately portrayed the way people of the time period actually saw and viewed the world at large.

It'd be cool if the further away from your borders, and less so from your capital, a land was, the less concrete info you have. So for example, news in CK2 of the Crusader States collapsing might take half a year to get to, say, Morocco, and before that you'd just see a hazy blur on the map with a rough chunk labelled Crusader States. Obviously though this stops being Paradox-style and hits the autism limit of things like Aurora.

Anyone know how to watch some good historical documentaries not made by murifats? Murifat ones always seem to have bias, and try to make history 'exciting' for its dumb viewers by adding in backing music, action and unnecessary voiceovers. Already watched all the good BBC ones on their online viewer, is there a BBC documentary database or other credible sources anyone knows of?

Different cartographic styles in different cultures would mean this is basically always true, but that doesn't mean their maps were actually any better.
